Title: Mordheim Quest Campaign: Battle Reports (pic heavy) - Updated July 7
Post by: Maniacus on May 14, 2010, 04:56:31 PM
A while back my gaming group (including LAF forum member m4jumbo) wanted to recapture the feel of our old Dungeons & Dragons role playing days and bring that into our current miniatures gaming.  So we came up with what we have dubbed "Mordheim Quest", based off of Mordheim with a few additions thrown in from GW's LOTR (i.e. Might and Fate).

Each player runs from 2-4 characters chosen from the various Mordhiem warband lists and together these make up the adventuring party.  They play as a group through a campaign of ongoing linked scenarios in which the game master sets up the scenarios and controls the enemies and NPCs.  Experience, loot, skills, and purchasing equipment are done in the same way as Mordheim.

We’ve been having a lot of fun with this so I thought I’d start a thread to share some of our ongoing adventures.

Battle Report 1:  ORC AMBUSH

A band of adventurers gathered in the foothills of the Dutchy of Geoff, having resolved to assist the warrior priest Erasmus Voltoc, one of their comrades, to deliver a holy relic to the Sigmarite temple in the town of Ostgate.  The band consisted of three dwarves, an elf, and 8 humans:

Dargor Ironhelm - Dwarf Noble
Grungi Headsplitter - Dwarf Slayer
Erol Otis - Wizard at Large
Erasmus Voltoc - Warrior Priest
Hazkal Okri - Dwarf Engineer
Maximus - Pit Figher King
Elrond - Elf Shadow Walker
Rupert von Hasselhoff - Middenheim Champion
Jade the Bitter - Amazon Champion
Gabby the Wraith - Amazon Scout
Hagar the Merciless - Norse Berserker
"Unlucky" Eddie - Norse Marauder

The group set off on their journey through the countryside and approached what appeared to be a seemingly peaceful river crossing.

When they approached the footbridge over the river they noticed a number of dead or injured villagers lying in the road ahead.  At the urging of the priest they rushed forward to assist, only to be set upon by a gang of ambushing orcs.

The orcs were blocking passage over the footbridge so "Unlucky" Eddie sprinted ahead and attempted to leap over the river.  He tripped, made a spectacular face plant into the water and, becoming stunned, began to be swept downstream.

Being more sure-footed than Eddie, Jade the Amazon successfully jumped over the river and prepared to attack the orcs from behind.

With the enemy distracted by Jade, Hagar and Grungi Headsplitter launched their own assault across the bridge.  Flying into a berserker rage, Hagar began to cut down orc after orc.

Arrows began to rain in from a group of orc and goblin archers off to the party's left.  Maximus and Rupert charged across the farm field to engage these new targets while Hazkal, Elrond, and Erol Otis provided missile support from a distance.  All the while Eddie continued to float further downstream, struggling to regain his footing in the fast-moving water.

After easily dispatching their foes, Maximus and Rupert prepared to wade across the river to rejoin the main fight back by the bridge.

The main body of the orc raiding party was then quickly cut down and the remainder turned and fled with the loot taken from the local villagers.  The party pursued them and attempted to take them down with long-range missile fire.  Unfortunately this effort failed and the orcs fled into the woods with their ill-gotten gain.

The adventurers spread out and ensured that the area was secure before continuing on their journey to Ostgate.  This kept them occupied while they waited for Eddie to dry off and pour all the river water out of his equipment.

Battle Report 2:  TRACKING THE ORCS

After successfully fending off the orc ambush on the road to Ostgate, the party safely arrived at their destination.  While Erasmus was occupied delivering the holy relic to the temple, the rest of the group learned that their encounter with the orcs during their journey was unfortunately all too common in the area recently.

The farms and villages surrounding Ostgate had been severely plagued by increasing orc raids over the last several months.  The situation had gotten so severe that the flow of trade caravans and food supplies into the area were dwindling dangerously low.  The party was asked by the town elders if they could lend assistance.  Specifically, if they could help locate the location from which the orcs were launching their raids and stop them.

The party decided to split in two to cover more area.  One half, consisting of those below, staked out their own ambush at a nearby farm with the intent to capture one or more orcs and force them to reveal the location of their camp.  The town elders sent along two of the local militia to assist since they knew the area and could act as guides.

Grungi Headsplitter - Dwarf Slayer
Erol Otis - Wizard at Large
Hazkal Okri - Dwarf Engineer
Maximus - Pit Figher King
Jade the Bitter - Amazon Champion
Gabby the Wraith - Amazon Scout
“Squinty” Mackay – Militia Archer
Johan – Militia Swordsman

An overview of the farm where the party decided to set up their ambush.

Gabby decided to climb a tree and use it as a crafty camouflaged observation area.  After spotting an orc raiding party approaching through the woods near her position, she let out a bird call in an attempt to alert her fellow amazon fighter and hopefuly the rest of the group.

Unfortunately, her bird call also alerted the two orcs moving below her tree and they quickly grabbed the trunk and began to shake it violently.  Gabby wasn’t able to retain her grip on her perch and promptly fell onto the ground at their feet, being knocked unconscious and out of action before they could even land a blow.

With the element of surprise gone, the adventurers launched a straight-out assault on the orcs.  Maximus, Hazkal, and Johan charged into the enemies closest to the farmhouse.

Grungi desired a more challenging opponent to test his slayer vow, but had to content himself with starting the battle against a goblin archer.

“Squinty” and Erol Otis the wizard provided long range support from the upper level of the farm house. (http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%202007%2006-21-07/06-21-07MordQuest07.jpg)

A second group of orcs burst into the farmhouse after sneaking around the back.  Luckily, Erol heard a commotion on the stairs just in time to turn and make a hasty defense while shouting out the window that orcs were in the house.

The rest of the party rushed to help defend their comrades in the house.  Maximus and Johan were the first to arrive.

The fight continued in the interior of the farm house.  The wizard held his own in close combat, fending off the orc’s savage blows one after another with his staff.

After dispatching his first foe, Johan rushed over the help the mage.

Flames began to leap from the back room after the greenskins set the walls alight.

The orc leader grabbed the farmer’s wife and fled from the house with his captive in tow.

The party pursued him and successfully rescued the captive, although Johan was taken out of action before the orc was killed.

The party succeeded in capturing some of the raiding party and planned to interrogate them about the location of the orcs’ base camp.  The only friendly casualty of the fight was the farmer’s house, which continued to burn out of control.

Battle Report 3:  COME INTO MY PARLOR

After successfully capturing one of the marauding orcs during the attack on the local farm, the adventurers were able to gain information about the general location of the orcs’ base camp.  Acting upon this information they split the party into two groups and set out to search for the best route that will allow them to approach the orc camp unseen.

The first group departed to scout out a path which led them through Grunwald Forest.  The party consisted of the following:

Grungi Headsplitter - Dwarf Slayer
Erasmus Voltoc - Warrior Priest
Elrond - Elf Shadow Walker
Rupert von Hasselhoff - Middenheim Champion
Hagar the Merciless - Norse Berserker
"Unlucky" Eddie - Norse Marauder

The adventurers carefully advance on the trail through the forest…
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%202008%2009-17-08/DSC05053.jpg)

…when a rain of incoming arrows alerts them to a goblin ambush.

As the party rushes toward their attacker, the goblin turns and flees, only to get trapped in a large web that has been stung across the trail.  Elrond and Hagar pursue him and attack him while he’s helplessly caught in the web.

While busy dispatching the goblin, they fail to notice the giant spider that lowers itself down right behind them and attacks!

Meanwhile, Unlucky Eddie tries to cut through the underbrush and is swarmed by a number of smaller spiders.

Elrond is brought down by the creature, but Grungi charges in to join Hagar in battling the giant arachnid while Rupert is also swarmed by the smaller creatures.

Finally the large beast is brought down, but another emerges from the nearby trees and starts to advance toward the party.

The beast begins to stalk Rupert, silently moving ever closer to its prey.

Before it can reach its victim, the rest of the group intercepts the creature.

The group can’t defeat the beast and they are brought down one-by-one.

The victims are all paralyzed by the spider’s venom and wrapped in webs for a future meal.  Hopefully the other half of the party will find them in time to launch a rescue.

Battle Report 4:  SPIDER BARROWS

Previously, after accepting the quest to seek out and eliminate the orc raiders that had been harassing the town of Ostgate and the surrounding area, the party split into two halves to cover more ground in their search for the orcs’ encampment.  One half of the party had unfortunately run into a nest of giant spiders in the Grunwald Forest and had been captured by the vile beasts.

The rest of the group, alerted to the situation by local militia who had seen the party right before they disappeared, moved quickly to mount a rescue.  The captain of the militia lent them a few soldiers who guided them to the caves where the spiders made their nest.  The group then embarked into the darkness to find their comrades before it was too late.

The rescue party consisted of:

Grungi Headsplitter – Dwarf Slayer
Erol Otis – Wizard at Large
Maximus – Pit Fighter
Hazkal Okri – Dwarf Engineer
Jade the Bitter – Amazon Champion
Gabby the Wraith – Amazon Scout

Overview of the spider barrows cave.

The group enters the caves with Maximus and Jade in the lead.

Jade advances down a passageway but doesn’t pay attention to the spider web behind her.  A bad mistake . . .

Jade is taken down by the spider’s surprise attack but Maximus takes his revenge on the creature.

To keep any more ambusher at bay Erol Otis unleashes a fireball to burn the webbing.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group battles more spiders.  Harold the NPC militia halberdier gets ready to begin his streak of unintentionally stealing monster kills (and XP) from the player characters.

They find victims wrapped in webbing to be eaten later, but these appear to be local villagers rather than their missing companions.

The spider manages to knock down or stun all of the fighters it is in contact with.  Will this be the end?

The wizard and militia gunner prepare to take down the spider with ranged fire, thus saving their stunned companions who were all about to be killed.

The wizard used his fireball to set more webs on fire.

The group clears out yet more spiders from another chamber.

Having defeated the last of the spiders, the party discovers a set of stairs that leads up to a darkened doorway.  What could await them beyond?

The group was ultimately able to find all of their missing companions.  Unfortunately, Unlucky Eddie the Marauder and Rupert von Hasselhoff the Middenheimer had both succumbed to their injuries and died, while Grungi Headsplitter and Gabby the Amazon fell valiantly during the rescue attempt.

A while back my gaming group (including LAF forum member m4jumbo) wanted to recapture the feel of our old Dungeons & Dragons role playing days and bring that into our current miniatures gaming.  So we came up with what we have dubbed "Mordheim Quest", based off of Mordheim with a few additions thrown in from LOTR (i.e. Might and Fate).

Each player runs from 2-4 characters chosen from the various Mordhiem warband lists and together these make up the adventuring party.  They play as a group through a campaign of ongoing linked scenarios in which the game master sets up the scenarios and controls the enemies and NPCs.  Experience, loot, skills, and the purchasing equipment are done in the same way as Mordheim.

That's exactly what I planned to do soon, though to recapture WFRP First Ed! Perhaps converting old PCs rather than choosing from the warbands, should be easy to divie stats by ten. Of course I'd ignore the usual cost rules and weight in favour of the beasts!

I'd be really interested in seing the might and fate rules you used

Below are some of the enhancements we've added, which include a few additional skills as well as Might and Fate.  We tweaked the Mordheim advancement chart to include a chance for characters to gain additional Might and Fate points.

We've found that Might and Fate have been fun additions to the game as they allow characters to really perform heroic actions or try to dramatically make those important dice roles at critical moments.

ADDITIONAL RULE

Overwatch
Overwatch is a special rule that allows characters to forgo their own turn in order to shoot during the enemy’s turn. This is useful if a character wants to set up an ambush or man a defensive position.

Preparing Overwatch:  The player declares which models are going on overwatch at the beginning of his turn at the same time charges are declared.  A character may not go on overwatch if there are enemy within 8”.  When a model is placed on overwatch the player must nominate a 90º field of fire.  Characters on overwatch may do nothing else during their own turn.

Shooting on Overwatch:  During the enemy’s movement phase a character on overwatch may shoot at opposing models as they present themselves.  A target which doesn’t move at all can still be shot at so long as it can be seen.  Once a model fires it is no longer on overwatch.

Overwatch Modifier:  All shots on overwatch apply a modifier of -1 to the to-hit roll

Losing Overwatch:   Once a model fires it is no longer on overwatch.  Characters hit by missile fire, spells, or other effects while on overwatch must pass a leadership test or they will lose their overwatch. Additionally, if a model is forced to fight in close combat it will lose its overwatch status.

Charged While on Overwatch:   If a character is charged while on overwatch it may get the chance to shoot at its attacker if the enemy is within its 90º field of fire.  This shot at the charging model takes place at short range for whatever weapon the model is using.    A character charged while on overwatch fights the first round of close combat without the benefit of the special rules for any melee weapons he may be carrying.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS

Fate
Fate represents a character’s destiny and, as such, protects him from harm where ordinary men might otherwise die.  Characters may start their career with one point of Fate.

A point of Fate can be expended during a game to grant the character an unmodified 4+ save versus a wound.  This save may be taken in addition to any other applicable saves.

A character can use as many Fate points as he has available to try to save a wound.  The player can roll one dice at a time until he makes the score required, runs out of Fate, or decides to suffer the wound.

Fate may not be expended by a stunned character that has had an attack nominated against him.

A character’s Fate points are automatically regenerated prior to each new game.

Healer
Priests and Clerics start their career with the Healer skill.  If the healer does not go out of action during the game he may choose to heal another hero or henchman during the post-game injury phase.  The model that receives the healing may reroll a result on the serious injury chart.  The second result must be accepted, even if it is worse than the first.

Might
Might represents a character’s ability to perform heroic feats.  When a dice is rolled on behalf of a character for shooting, fighting, leadership, or whatever, its score can be adjusted by expending Might.  Characters may start their career with two points of Might.

Each point of Might expended can be used to adjust the dice score up or down by 1 to a maximum of 6 or a minimum of 1.  A player does not have to decide to use his Might until the dice have been rolled.

If a character goes out of action with any remaining Might, he may expend it in the post-game sequence in order to reroll his first result on the serious injury table.  The player must declare that he is expending his Might prior to rerolling and the second result must be used, even if it is worse than the first.

A character’s Might points are automatically regenerated prior to each new game.

What a very kewl table.  Really super!

Can I have it?   ::)

Tempting offer, but I think we'll hang on to it  ;)

We have enough modular cavern sections to cover a 4x8 table or even larger, so we've made good use of them for a lot of games over the years.  They've been used for everying from Fantasy to 40K to Inquisitor to modern skirmish and even Battletech and Epic (representing large canyons and valleys in those two cases).

What I didn't mention is the each modular section of the board (12"x12" each) was initially covered for this Mordheim Quest scenario and was only revealed as the characters entered it.  So this added to the tension since the players didn't know what was around each corner until they actually discovered it.

Truly brilliant stuff - loving the old Advanced Heroquest minis!   :D

Those giant spiders are great too - where are they from?

I believe that the larger of the spiders are old Grenadier models.  They came individually in blister packs with a goblin spider rider.  This web store has some pictures of them:

The next battle report from our ongoing campaign....

Battle Report 5:  The Lost Miners

After battling through the spider den to rescue their captured comrades, the party returned to the town of Ostgate to heal their wounds and to bury their three fallen comrades.

While in town they replenished their numbers by adding new members to their party: a travelling wizard known at Catherine the Shunned, a somewhat unbalanced flagellant named Tuval, and Menk Blackthorne, a self-described “Adventuring Specialist”.  However, the rumors among the locals described him less flatteringly as a cunning and dangerous rogue.

After gathering their strength and resupplying, the group decided to return to the now-empty spider den to investigate the mysterious set of stairs they had discovered deep within the web covered caverns.

The party now consisted of:

Dargor Ironhelm – Dwarf Noble
Erol Otis – Wizard at Large
Erasmus Voltoc – Warrior Priest
Menk Blackthorne – Rogue
Hazkal Okri – Dwarf Engineer
Maximus – Pit Fighter
Elrond – Elf Shadow Warrior
Tuval – Flagellant
Jade the Bitter – Amazon Champion
Gabby the Wraith – Amazon Scout
Hagar the Merciless – Norse Berserker
Catherine “Cat” the Shunned - Wizard

The party advances on the stairs and enters an unexplored portion of the caverns.

Advancing cautiously down the darkened passageway they discover more spider webs.  However, beyond a few small lurking arachnids they thankfully aren’t set upon by their larger cousins.

Dargor hears faint conversation in the dwarven language echoing from the passageway ahead.  He quietly motions for the party to follow him to its source.

The group emerges into a larger cavern and sees what appears to be the remnants of a dormant mining operation.

On the far side of the cavern the party spots the source of the conversation which Dargor heard earlier: a group of dwarf miners has barricaded themselves behind a makeshift defensive wall.

A brief conversation with the dwarves reveals that they are what remains of a mining expedition sent into these abandoned mines to determine whether enough mineral value remains to successfully reopen them.  The dwarves hadn’t been working at their task very long before they were attacked by unseen beasts from the shadows.  They lost a number of their companions already and now their expedition leader has also been killed, leaving the expedition log book lost somewhere out in the mine.  They implore the adventurers to help find the lost log book and to drive off the mysterious attackers.

Accepting this mission, the party splits up to continue searching through the mine.

Only a few moments pass before they are set upon by fast-moving creatures out of the darkness – vile ratmen and several giant rats!

Erasmus the warrior priest loudly recites a prayer of battle as he engages the foul beasts.

In a blur of fur and teeth, the ratmen quickly scurry over the terrain, attacking the party from all sides.

Maximus, Tuval, and Dargor hold off a large wave of foes…
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020091213/20091213024.jpg)

…while Jade is busy fending off a giant rat that is desperately trying to gnaw her legs off.

Elrond leaps dramatically onto an ore cart with the intention of riding it straight into the teeth of the enemy.  However, its rusty wheels refuse to move and he has to quickly reconsider his plan of attack.

Hoping to outflank the enemy by running through a side chamber, Hagar and Menk are caught up in their own fight in the neighboring passageway.

More ratmen swarm from the darkness and begin peppering the adventurers with arrows.

Striking down the enemies in front of them, part of the group pushes further down the passageway.

Around the next corner Hazkal the engineer spots a rat feasting on the body of the fallen mining expedition leader.  He rushes up to dispatch the creature and retrieve the log book.

Meanwhile, as she scouts down a nearby tunnel Gabby hears strange noises emanating out from a dim tunnel.  To her horror she suddenly discovers the source of the noise when an enormous rat ogre emerges from around the corner.

The rat ogre smashes Gabby aside without breaking stride and she slumps to the ground, out of action.  Catherine the wizard summons forth an ethereal sword and charges into the rat ogre and its handler.  However, the creature’s pace does not slow and it barges past her into the large cavern and heads straight towards the dwarven mining expedition.

Having eliminated most of the other attackers, the rest of the adventurers all begin sprinting back to save the mining expedition from almost certain destruction at the claws of the vile rat ogre.

Erol Otis summons forth a fireball from the ether and sends it screaming across the cavern to explode into the back of the charging rat ogre.

However, this is not enough to stop the creature and it crashes into the dwarven miners.

Catherine the wizard rushes in and slashes at the rat ogre from behind.  Her attack hits home, but she is then quickly smashed to the ground.  Undeterred, the monster rushes around the barricade while more ratmen charge forth from nearby corridors.

Elrond leads the charge of the remaining adventurers as they come to the rescue and bring their blades to bear on the creature.

After wounding the creature Elrond is knocked to the ground and nearly meets his doom beneath the abomination’s claws.  Only a quirk of fate (expending his Fate points) allows him to avoid a sudden end to his adventuring career.

At last their weight of numbers allows the determined warriors to push back the foul beast, and Hagar slays him with a final mighty blow from his sword.

Gabby was the only adventurer to not remain standing at the end of the fight.  She appeared for a time to be on the brink of death but was able to pull through, although suffering from multiple injuries (expended her Might points to reroll a “dead” result and instead got “multiple injuries”).

After catching their breath the party returned the log book to the very grateful members of the mining expedition.  To show their thanks the miners rewarded the adventurers with what loot they could spare as well as several pieces of gold ore.  They also agreed to share their map of the mine and point out the safest route back to the surface.

Only this update brought to my attention that the series I already regularly read on the Specialist Games and Tom's Boring Mordheim Forum has made it here, too. Excellent! :)

I must say, I absolutely love the ideas, concepts, rule modifications and effort you put into this (and hope for many more updates, of course ;)). Gorgeous miniatures, terrain and tables' visuals in general, too.
This is pure Awesomeness spelt with a capital A. Thank you very much! :D

Glad people are still enjoying reading about and seeing our adventures.

The figures are "Ratlings" from the Ral Partha line.  It looks like they are still available from Iron Wind Metals.  If the direct link below doesn't work you can also find them if you search for ratlings on the Iron Wind Metal online store.  http://ironwindmetals.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=ratling

Fantastic reports and pictures, Maniacus!  Echoing others, this is (or, rather, should be)what tabletop fantasy gaming's all about (recent incarnations of WFB bore me rigid, I'm afraid!).  Looks like a real blast!  Kudos on the cave boards too.

Here is the next installment in our ongoing campaign . . .

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Battle Report 6:  The Orc Encampment

The adventurers previously assisted the dwarven mining expedition in defeating the foul ratmen that were besieging them within the ancient mine.  In gratitude the dwarves helped the party find another safe route back to the surface.  To their great good fortune, this alternate exit from the mine brought them out onto a high vantage point in the hill country.  From this lofty perch they were able to finally spot their elusive prey – the sought after orc encampment from which the greenskins were launching their raids throughout the country side.

The group hastily formed their plan of attack and readied themselves to stealthfully approach the camp and put a final end to the orc threat.  On the climb downward Maximus the pit fighter fell to his death (owing to the player losing his character sheet) and the party then found a quick replacement in the form of Nathe, a priest of Taal who was conveniently nearby at a local wilderness shrine.

As they prepared to launch their surprise attack, the party now consisted of:

Dargor Ironhelm – Dwarf Noble
Erol Otis – Wizard at Large
Erasmus Voltoc – Warrior Priest
Menk Blackthorne – Rogue
Hazkal Okri – Dwarf Engineer
Nathe – Priest of Taal
Elrond – Elf Shadow Warrior
Tuval – Flagellant
Jade the Bitter – Amazon Champion
Gabby the Wraith – Amazon Scout
Hagar the Merciless – Norse Berserker
Catherine “Cat” the Shunned - Wizard

Overview of the orc encampment.

Part 2

Elrond the shadow warrior, Hagar the berserker, and Gabby the Amazon scout take up position on the left flank…
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020120523/IMG_0530.jpg)

…while Hazkal the dwarf engineer and Nathe the Priest of Taal ready themselves behind cover in the center.

The rest of the party prepares to make a silent advance up the right flank, hoping to avoid alerting the orc sentries.

Menk Blackthorne and Jade sneak forward into cover.

“Surely they won’t see us if we can all fit behind this rock.”

Seeing his chance, Menk quietly slips from cover and catches the first orc senty unaware.  He eliminates him quietly without raising the alarm.

Meanwhile on the left flank another sentry hears the elf’s arrow whiz by him and moves in to investigate.

Another sentry spots the dwarf engineer and charges towards him but is intercepted by Nathe.

Part 3

While some of the orc encampment begins to move to arms due to the commotion, the bulk of the party continues to avance undetected up the right flank.  They have made it halfway to the captives held in the middle of the camp.

After striking a dashing pose, Menk scales up a craggy outcropping…
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020120523/IMG_0546.jpg)

…and arrives undetected in perfect position to ambush an unwary goblin archer.

Unable to hold himself back any longer, Hagar the berserker unleashes his battle lust and shouts at the top of his lungs as he charges in and knocks down a sentry.  With any chance of stealth now gone the alarm is fully raised.

Taking her cue from Hagar, Jade throws the plan out the window and runs out from their hidden position on the right flank which alerts the orcs in the center of the camp.  The battle is now fully joined.

An unsettling roar is heard coming from one of the ramshackle huts as a horrifying troll emerges along with his goblin minder.  The troll looks around for a moment and after spotting the adventurers it begins quickly loping toward Hagar.

Seeing the foul creature rushing towards her comrade Hagar, Gabby begins to pepper the troll with arrows from the cover of the trees.  But to her horror her arrows don't seem to even slow it down.

One of the orc guards rushes toward the captives and draw its wicked looking knife.

Erol Otis the mage and Erasmus Voltoc the warrior priest unleash fireballs and spells at the orc, but this is not enough to stop him.  The first helpless captive is slain before their eyes.

Part 4

Meanwhile Hagar is engaged in a desperate fight with the troll.  He manages to wound it, but is ultimately put out of action after being splattered with the creature’s corrosive vomit.

The warriors cut down several more orcs and try to work their way closer to rescue the captives.

With the captives now out of the immediate danger, Dargor Ironhelm runs as fast as his stubby dwarf legs will carry him toward the orc shaman which has emerged from a nearby hut.  Erasmus takes up position behind some barrels and begins chanting a spell of blessing on his comrades.

The shaman attempts to cast several spells, but they fizzle without doing any damage to the adventurers.  Gork is apparently not pleased with him this day.

Dargor and Erasmus quickly move in and put an end to the shaman before he has a chance to attempt any more spells.

Meanwhile the rest of the party methodically dispatches the remaining orcs, goblins, and the wounded troll.

Having slain the last of the orc resistance, the heroes free the remaining captives and set about searching the orc encampment.  They find a treasure stash which is no doubt the accumulated plunder from the orcs’ ongoing raids throughout the countryside.

The two priests attend to the wounds of Elrond who was put out of action by a goblin archer but makes a full recovery.  After the troll’s vomit is cleaned off of Hagar he also recovers, but now seems to suffer from a nervous condition.  Undoubtedly his fate could have been much worse after nearly being eaten by a troll this day.

After loading up with as much treasure and items as they can carry from the orcs’ stash, the adventurers take the former captives in tow and prepare to lead them back through the wilderness to safety.

Good fun!

What miniature is that archeress, Gabby?

I believe that miniature is from the Game Workshop Mordheim Amazon Warband.

@ Chaos Wolf and luidinuovo:

We wanted to approach “Mordheim Quest” in a way that hopefully recaptured some of the feel of our old AD&D role playing days.  To that end, I act as the GM and set up each linked scenario, run the NPCs and monsters, and generally provide the background, exposition, and guide each scenario along as we play.  Acting as what is essentially a Dungeon Master, I can make decisions on the fly about out-of-the-ordinary happenings or how to handle heroic feats that the characters may wish to attempt in the course of a game.

When we formed the initial adventuring party each player created a few characters (in our case 4 each) from the various Mordheim warband lists.  They didn’t purchase them with a set amount of gold crowns per se, but rather chose the hero or henchman type based upon what character types they thought would be fun to play and would be a good fit with the rest of the group.  They armed them with basic equipment and weapons from that character type’s permitted weapon/equipment lists in the appropriate warband list.  Since they represented beginning adventurers, we didn’t go overboard on their items since we knew they’d find equipment and earn gold to purchase better gear as they progressed.  We just chose what we felt was reasonable starting equipment for a new adventurer.

Once we started playing the linked scenarios as our story campaign developed, the group earned loot after each game per the standard chart in Mordheim (the wyrdstone income/upkeep chart) plus whatever other loot and rewards they found or were awarded by the GM per the scenario.

Experience and injuries are done in the usual manner of Mordheim, with each character getting an experience box checked off on their experience track for each enemy taken out of action plus for any other especially heroic deeds as deemed by the GM.  I should note that we use the full hero experience track for each character, even if that character was technically recruited from a henchman portion of a warband list.  They are supposed to all be glory-seeking heroes at heart after all, and this allows everyone the largest range to develop and grow their skills as our story plays out.

We also incorporated the Fate and Might rules (see below) from GW’s Lord of the Rings game.  We've found that Might and Fate have been fun additions to the game since they allow characters to really perform heroic actions or try to dramatically influence important dice roles at critical moments.  Each character begins their career with 1 Fate point and 2 Might points.  Additionally, we modified the skill advancement chart slightly so that there is a chance to gain additional Fate and Might points as the characters progress and earn experience.

As far as setting up scenarios, as the GM I generally don’t create the opposing forces by using any particular points values, although I will sometimes add up a basic total to see about how much I might want to throw at the characters. Mainly, I just use what seems to be the right feel for the scenario and how it seems it should play out story-wise.  As the GM I can have certain hidden models waiting in ambush for the party or adjust things a bit on the fly if the heroes are having too easy a time of it.  Since this is a narrative story-driven campaign my most important goal is to have things play out in an interesting and exciting manner so that we are all building the story together even though I am providing the general framework.

Below are the general rules additions that we have been using so far.

ADDITIONAL RULES

Battle Report 7:  The Missing Caravan

After the adventurers raided the orc encampment and defeated the green-skinned marauders, they packed up as much recovered treasure as they could carry and led the liberated captives through the wilderness and back to the safety of Ostgate.  The relieved townsfolk showered them with thanks and not a small amount of celebratory food, drink, and gold coins in reward.

Several days of well-earned rest in town passed and the group was resupplied and had their wounds healed.  It was then that they were again approached by several town elders with another request for assistance.

It seemed that an important caravan was several days overdue from arriving in town and the elders were growing increasingly worried that some ill fate had befallen it.  With all the recent orc activity, a large portion of the town guard had been assigned elsewhere in the countryside and so the caravan had been travelling with only a small escort on a route through what was thought to be a relatively safer area.

The adventurers accepted the mission to set out and investigate what had happened to the caravan and if at all possible to bring it safely back to Ostgate.

As the group set out to find the missing caravan, the party consisted of:

Dargor Ironhelm – Dwarf Noble
Erol Otis – Wizard at Large
Erasmus Voltoc – Warrior Priest
Menk Blackthorne – Rogue
Hazkal Okri – Dwarf Engineer
Nathe – Woodland Priest of Taal
Elrond – Elf Shadow Warrior
Tuval – Flagellant
Jade the Bitter – Amazon Champion
Gabby the Wraith – Amazon Scout
Hagar the Merciless – Norse Berserker
Catherine “Cat” the Shunned - Wizard

The party begins tracing the route that the caravan would have traveled, and follows the trade road towards a river crossing.

The adventurers spot what may be the wagons from the missing caravan at the river ford ahead.  They spread out and begin to approach cautiously.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0654b.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0654b.jpg.html)

Anticipating trouble, some of the group splits off and leaves the road, moving forward along nearby rock outcroppings...
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0658.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0658.jpg.html)

…while Tuval the flagellant and Hazkal the dwarf engineer scramble up the rocks to seek out a high vantage point.

The group reaches the river crossing and confirms that they have discovered the remains of the caravan. Broken pieces from the wagons and the remains of the ransacked cargo testify to the horrible violence that must have befallen the caravan.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0657.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0657.jpg.html)

As the party takes a closer looks around the wagons and the area of the river crossing they notice the nearby bodies of the unfortunate caravan guards.  Suddenly, a crossbow bolt flies toward them from up ahead and embeds itself into the side of a wagon dangerously close to Dargor the dwarf!

PART 2

After a moment they hear a voice challenge them from behind cover on the other side of the river crossing.  After exchanging a few shouts and questions they discover that it is a wounded caravan guard who mistook them for bandits.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0660.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0660.jpg.html)

Seeing the wounded guard step out from cover and show himself, Erasmus Voltoc the priest and the wizard Erol Otis race forward to lend aid.  The guard explains that the caravan was set upon by marauding ogres a few nights ago.  Many of the guards were slain in the initial attack and the caravan’s cargo scattered about the area.  After enduring further repeated attacks on the makeshift defensive position, he is now the last survivor.

The guard appeals to the adventurers to help him find the caravan’s scattered cargo and to bring it safely to the town of Ostgate in order to complete his mission.

(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0662.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0662.jpg.html)

Fearing another attack could occur at any moment, the group wastes no time in beginning to scout area in search of the valuable cargo.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0663.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0663.jpg.html)

While at the same time Hazkal the dwarf engineer begins to hastily repair the damaged wagon with the help of Tuval the flagellant.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0664.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0664.jpg.html)

Only moments later they hear the beating of war drums and suddenly the ogres launch an attack from upstream!
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0665.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0665.jpg.html)

Hagar rushes forward in a frenzy and attacks the lead ogre, only to be knocked off his feet by the brute’s powerful blow.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0668.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0668.jpg.html)

The engineer fires from the cover of the wagons while another ogre crashes into Tuval the flagellant.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0671.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0671.jpg.html)

The Ogre’s massive club connects with Tuval’s body in a sickening “crack!” and knocks the flagellant out of action before he can react to the sudden onslaught.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0673.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0673.jpg.html)

Jade the Bitter and the Catherine the wizard race back towards the river crossing to assist the dwarf engineer.

PART 3

Gambling that the rest of the group can fend off the two ogres, the wizard and the two priests begin searching for the cargo in the hope that they can find it before any more enemies can arrive.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0677.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0677.jpg.html)

Using his unique skills for locating and obtaining valuable items, Menk Blackthorne the rogue follows his instincts and is the first to find part of the missing cargo.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0675.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0675.jpg.html)

Back on the party’s right flank, the adventurers finally bring down one of the ogres.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0679.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0679.jpg.html)

Jade rushes in to attack the other ogre and manages to wound it …..
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0683.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0683.jpg.html)

….but is then knocked back off her feet by its counter attack.  Hazkal the engineer comes to her aid just in time and manages to bring down the brute.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0685.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0685.jpg.html)

Meanwhile, the wizards and the two priests continue searching for the cargo when they suddenly hear crashing coming from the nearby woods and are set upon by another ogre and its massive wolf companion.  Whirling around to meet this new threat, Erol Otis prepares to cast a fireball while Nathe the woodland priest begins the incantation to summon help from his forest friends.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0686b.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0686b.jpg.html)

The woodland priest summons forth a swarm of squirrels and with their big, nasty, pointy teeth they make short work of the wolf before disappearing back into the forest as quickly as they came.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0687b.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0687b.jpg.html)

The three adventurers charge the shocked ogre as he stares at the pile of fur that used to be his wolf.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0688.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0688.jpg.html)

(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0694.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0694.jpg.html)

The ogre unleashes a series of furious blows and takes Nathe the woodland priest out of action.  But retribution is swift as he is then immediately cut down by the wizard’s barrage of fireballs.

PART 4

More ogres appear from multiple directions as the attack intensifies.

While the din of battle sounds all around him, Menk Blackthorne finds yet another crate from the caravan’s scattered cargo.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0700.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0700.jpg.html)

After climbing up to a higher vantage point, Gabby the amazon scout spots an armored ogre bearing down fast towards Catherine the wizard.  She fires off an arrow but it flies wide of its target.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0706.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0706.jpg.html)

(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0707.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0707.jpg.html)

The ogre smashes the wizard onto the ground and prepares for the killing blow.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0708.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0708.jpg.html)

Menk slinks into the shadows and maneuvers around behind the ogre with the intent to backstab the unsuspecting brute.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0710.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0710.jpg.html)

After dispatching the armored ogre and with nearly all the cargo recovered, the group confirms that the dwarf engineer has repaired the wagons well enough to get them moving again.  As the party then begins to move the carts out of the crossing and back onto the road, Jade sprints forward to intercept more newly-arrived enemy.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0719.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0719.jpg.html)

Jade buys the group a little extra time but ultimately falls to the enemy’s relentless attacks.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0716.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0716.jpg.html)

Menk Blackthorne and Erasmus the priest strain to pull the wagon out of the water and back onto the road so that they can load the waiting cargo.

PART 5

Hazkal the engineer and Erol Otis the wizard desperately fend off next wave of attacks.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0722.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0722.jpg.html)

(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0723b.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0723b.jpg.html)

The growing sound of more approaching ogres echoes through the area…
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0727.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0727.jpg.html)

…while the group begins to hastily load both the cargo crates and their fallen comrades onto the wagons.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0724.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0724.jpg.html)

Dargor Ironhelm makes one last quick search of the area, whether to find the last remaining cargo crate or just to make use of the outhouse, only he knows.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0726.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0726.jpg.html)

Hagar the Norseman berserker makes a brave stand at the river crossing to protect his fallen comrade and in the hope of  buying enough time for his companions to begin hauling away the wagons.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0732.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0732.jpg.html)

The adventurers begin to put some distance between themselves and the pursuing ogres at the crossing.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0736.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0736.jpg.html)

(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0734.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0734.jpg.html)

Hagar manages to wound both ogres, but despite his courage he cannot hold them off indefinitely and the berserker falls to their savage attacks.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0737.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0737.jpg.html)

The ogres step over the fallen adventurers and renew  their frenzied pursuit, quickly closing in on the much slower wagons.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0738.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0738.jpg.html)

Erol Otis casts a fireball and slays the first of the pursuing ogres in a blast of magical flames.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0739b.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0739b.jpg.html)

The last remaining ogre bellows in fury and charges straight at the wizard, closing the ground between them at a frightening speed.

PART 6

From her vantage point on the rocky hill above, Gabby the Amazon scout looses several arrows at the charging brute but it’s not enough to stop his charge towards the wizard.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0742.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0742.jpg.html)

This gives Erol Otis just enough time to cast one last fireball spell before the enemy is able to crash straight into him.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0743b.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0743b.jpg.html)

The flames race through the air and slam into the hulking creature, and the greatly relieved wizard watches as the ogre’s incinerated body falls onto the ground with a loud thud.
(http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x216/MordheimQuest/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0743c.jpg) (http://s180.photobucket.com/user/MordheimQuest/media/MQuest%2020130509/IMG_0743c.jpg.html)

With no further enemies in sight, the adventurers quickly begin moving the wagons up the road and appear to have at last escaped any further ogre attacks for now.
With luck they will soon return the wagon train’s cargo to their destination of Ostgate and receive their reward for successfully finding and rescuing the lost caravan.

To be continued with the group's next adventure . . .
