Title: Tengu Models: 28mm Zombies (website online)
Post by: blackstone on May 18, 2010, 08:20:17 PM
This is a preview of some of the first packs of figures that will be available from my new company Tengu Models. They are from a range called Bio-Horror which will contain lots of zombies, mutants, mutant/zombies and general very nasty things! The figures come on thin intergral bases which are around 1mm thick. I've found this helps create a flat looking base when the figures are based on coins. I got the first batch from the casters last week and just today finished painting some of them.

The first picture is pack BH02 "Z Chicks".

Second is pack BH07 "No Time To Dress"

Both packs will be £11 each. I'm currently working on a website for the company which I hope will be ready in a few weeks.

Anybody interested in some pre-release packs send me a PM :)

Comments Welcomed!

Very nice, though 11GBP for 4 figures is, unfortunately, outside my price range.

Really really like these, but the price is a little off tbh.

Any pics of anything else lined up?

Yes, mutants and other bio-nasties sound interesting.

I do like these but price seems steep, compared to the prices of  other top of the range zombies like Studio Minis who sell 8 figures for £16.
Title: Re: Tengu Models: 28mm Zombies
Post by: Commander Vyper on May 18, 2010, 09:23:22 PM
So £10 per pack would seem more reasonable. I'd buy both straight off, although as has been said that's a £5 more that one studio miniatures zed set for eight minis.

Want to support this, (you know what a zed head I am) so finger's crossed on a pricing rethink.

Well nude zombies have been a bit of a theme through loads of the films, (Night, dawn remake, etc...).

Cool looking models, especially the second pack.  Naked zombies are a bit under represented in the 28mm world,.

Lovely painting too by the way.

That sounds right up my street.  Even though the zombies shown are great, the market is full of good quality zombie sculpts these days.  Focusing on the mutant zombie aspect seems wise to me, carve a niche.

I hope that the rest of the releases are up to this high standard :)

Good luck with your new company.

I am definitely going to buy the "No Time To Dress"-pack. Those nekkid flesheaters would really fit my zombiehorde!  :)

Oh yeah, I like the looks of these as well...

Maybe it's the favorable exchange rate, but 4 minis for $15 is still affordable in my book.

Hasslefree minis, for instance for for up to about 8 dollars apiece for a single 28mm mini.

I know it says 28mm, but, we all know how subjective that is.  Any chance of having them posed next to a ruler?

That would be the only thing that would stop me from buying them, the size, I mean.

But HF don't do many zombies,  and most of those they do are zombiefied versions of the survivor characters rather than simply for the horde.

In the white metal section there are five zeds by matt lord, salute deal for £10 for the 5. So £2 a pop was a nice price. Yup these are great but again when studio minis are 8 for £15 the price is a little, (but not much) high.

I know, that's why I said most  ;) Supervike made the point about many HF minis selling for $8, I was making a point about them being characters rather than additions for the horde.

Wish I'd had chance to get the HF zombies at Salute. Didn't know about the offer.   :-[

Good choice of start-up poses. I'm sure there's plenty of zed hoards about in dire need of more female members. The naked figures will be excellent fodder (pun intended, unfortunately) for clothing sculpting practice too.

Yeah I'll get some pictures with a ruler done today. Btw the figures in the pics are based on 20mm coins which will give you an idea of the size. These figures are at the smaller end of the 28mm scale, mainly in bulk rather than height.

Yes. A P+P structure will be put in place when the company website goes live and there are more packs in the ranges.

Does that include postage to Europe (Ireland in my case)?

If so then that swings it for me.  I could easily find a home for all of those figures.

Yes. Whilst there are only these two packs available through this forum I'll send the figures post free.

Here's some scale shots with a ruler to show the sizing of the figures.

You can see the figures are small 28's but this is intentional since I'll be sculpting females slightly small than males as a general rule.

Here's a shot with a Hasslefree and Artizan figure which shows how they scale up to other ranges. The male zombie is a comparable to the Artizan figure height wise but less bulky. I'm aiming for my human figures to have a natural amount of height variation. Other male zombies I'm currently sculpting are slightly taller than this guy!

Very helpful indeed, much better than bloody triangles or pips that a certain feared company uses.

Are you also looking for ideas? (In a FOD customer suggestion kinda way?)

Be nice to see the range and direction of travel. My request would be recently turned law enforcement, fire, ambulance, army, use TAG or hasslefree weapons (available with a license) so they will tie in with other ranges. On a dark side lets see some cthulhu inspired mutates and subnorms.

Tight arse!

Face it - we both know, we will both buy these, so don't mess the guy around.

 lol

Blackstone - IMHO the pricing is perfectly reasonable - the quality is good, and the subjects are good generic poses, so plenty of uses.  I wouldn't build an entire horde out of them (due to the price per mini, and the size of my hordes), BUT I would definitely have them in my collection, as they are good standout minis.  I'd also echo Vyper's comments re: using HF guns etc, and future range additions.

Keep up the good work.

IMHO these zombies are great sculpts, but the market is already pretty swollen and would perhaps be more likely to sell to more than the zedheads who must have every zombie sculpt if they were closer in price to say the Studio miniatures - if it comes to a choice between £16 for eight figures or £22 for eight fiigures then I personally would go for the Studio minis.

I really like these figures they're top quality. I'd be happy to buy them even though they're a bit smaller than my West Wind & Reaper figures but the price is holding me back. I like the free shipping idea.

I'll have to agree with Onebigriver on this. You're competing with established companies of equal quality like Studio miniatures. You'll need to build a loyal base of repeat customers in order for your company to thrive. You've heard caveats about the price from the very people who would form your vanguard of loyal customers. These are the people who own everything Studio miniatures has produced. Why don't you try a LAF discount coupon, say 2 pounds off and see how many pre-orders it generates? At the very least you'll have your miniatures showing up all over the net.

Hasslefree minis, for instance for for up to about 8 dollars apiece for a single 28mm mini.

I don't know were you shop but I get Hasslefree here in the US for $6.60 a piece and I picked up all of the Matt Lord zombies for $5.60 each.

Shush you....I'm trying to exaggerate!

I've paid 7.70 for a few of the hasslfree 'characters' IE Cobra....but the favorable exchange rate makes them much more affordable.  I don't have any problem paying that, it's just that I buy lots less at that price...

Nothing local sells them, so I rely on online vendors.

I'd love modern themed C'thulhu/weird mutant horror, too, but, let's face it, c'thulhoid minis can most often be used for all periods  lol

I have those westwind rage zombies.  I don't think they are great sculpts.  They are quite large and look more like ghouls than zombies... all are bald and they are not really running at all but standing in place or leaping up in place.  With the shredded clothing, bald heads, and muscles they look more like ghoul body builders than rage zombies.  Not very dynamic poses.  No one actually does nice realistic looking rage zombies running full out...

I placed my order for the two Tengu packs also! :-*

I agree completely....I'm not a fan of the West Wind ones either..well at least not for my idea of 'rage zombies'.

Griffin's zombie does have a few that feel closer to Ragers...

For instance,

http://www.griffinminiatures.com/images/Zombies/zombie_04.html

and

http://www.griffinminiatures.com/images/Zombies/zombie_02.html

While they aren't running, I get the since of quick movement from both.  But, yeah, it's an under represented zombie cliche!

I'm looking forward to see naked rage zombies.  :-*

A bit on pricey side, but free worldwide shipping still makes the price of £11 reasonably fair.
But that's only because the sculpts look so good (and because they're naked...  ;) )
No stupid "10-20% of the total sum in shipping" makes it easy to estimate the final price.

Yup, it's not really THAT expensive, after all - if Tengu makes good business from the first sets, we might even see later sets at a lower starting price - when the proifits (hopefully) start to take some of the brunt of the starting up costs of a set... (and now somebody probably tells me to put my money where my mouth is... I'll for sure buy these, but I have a backlog of Zeds to wear down, first - and I haven't even bought Studio, Cold Wars, or Zombiesmith (well, actually 2 Z-kids, but still...))

Got mine yesterday!

Great looking minis!!

Can't say I'm a big fan of the intregal base however....but it's really not a huge deal, as I'll stick them on a base and hide it with some putty.

Can't wait to get these painted up!

It's one of his zombies from the earlier set (also in this thread)

They match up well with Hasslefree.

Big and Ugly look great.  Big is obviously perfect as an L4D Boomer and while Ugly looks set to feature as a Charger, I also see a lot of William Birkin / "G" from Resident Evil 2.

Must have figures for me I think.

Hi folks,
Just discovered this site as a result of googling for 28mm zombies.  These look fantastic.  I'm ordering.

Got mine the other day, they look sweet!  :-*
Can't wait to get them painted.

I think you can fill a niche with your naked zombies.
Many manufacturers probably find nakedness a bit too controversial.
Miss Miniatures have naked zombies, but sadly they're made without genitals...  :?

Big & Ugly are both looking beautiful.

Best wishes to your business!

Actually, Black Cat Bases do some male 'anatomically correct' nude zeds, too....

Post by: apeekaboo on June 07, 2010, 08:09:14 PM
I saw the Black Cat Bases zombies yesterday. Anatomically correct yes, but personally I'm not too fond of zombies wielding weapons or other objects. It's only okay when it looks like they're holding on to objects because they're too stupid to throw them away. Now that's funny to me...  :D

Well, you CAN remove the weapons.... but I see your point - I have been constructing some GW plastic filler zeds, and deliberately avoided the arms with weapons (which is actually possible).

One mistake noticed in your descriptions of the "no time to dress" pack it lists 2 male 2 female Zombies but show 1 male and 3 females. Unless one has undergone a sex change ;)

Congratulations Blackstone!
You now stock a range that I need to buy everything from... Including the upcoming Tcho-Tcho (can't have a modern cannibal zombie holoucaut without them).
Will you do more generic zombies? And how about survivors?

Hmm... Only 38.5 quid for a collection. Must resist.

Aren't they more native to Burma/Cambodia (where people dress in black)?

As soon as possible. I'm working on some right now to complete a second set, I'll be posting some pics of the new figures pretty soon in the Cthulhu board.

Quote

They're mentioned as being from Tibet so an asian skin tone would work, although they're also spoke about as being less than human, rather than humans of small size, so any skin tone would work really. They're said to be an extremely ancient race but Tcho-Tcho in modern times could well have mixed with humans therefore giving a range of skin tones within a group. That's how I'll be painting them :)

I particulary like this update "All being well the next releases will include our first "large" model kit combining resin and white metal!!", might that be a big lump of things that went out of print really quickly a while ago? ;)
