Title: Hotlead Sunday morning VSF bring and battle - PIC Heavy!
Post by: Chairface on May 21, 2010, 04:17:34 AM
Back in March a few of us got together for the traditional Sunday morning colonial bring and battle. For the last few years the Hotlead crew has been spicing up the battle with a few VSF twists.  The battle ranged over four tables with rebel Ottomans, Russians and French forces going head to head with the British and their Prussian and Dutch allies. What were they fighting over? The Suez Canal , or something like that.  ;) Whatever it was, it dosn't matter. We were having a load of fun. Sterling Moose lead his Russians to a clear victory on one side of the table and my Dutch finally make their LAF premiere.

Bloody 'ell that's a big game. Much eye candy there. I'm surprised Sterling's cossacks didnt make an appearance.

Lovely stuff!  :)

They were there somewhere in the mix, crushing the British flank

Excellent!

Yes, and they rolled their dice incredibly well! Which was bad because they were usually shooting at me.  ;) They were also responsible for some awesome looking terrain and two of the walkers on the table, which they put together out of dollar store robots with their dad. Awesome kids!

Looks like it was a very fun game. What rules did you use for this kind of big VSF encounter?

Fellow LAFer Ricco has done up some one or two page VSF rules which were used. I could only watch for a few minutes and then it was off to bed, having been up at work all night otherwise I'm sure my Bengal lancers would have given those clockwork riding Cossacks a good cuff on the ears! :)

It's Ricco's red coat infantry following the black steam tank and green driller in a couple of the pics.

Thanks Chairface for  posting these, (as I'm having problems with Photobucket) your Veusian parrotmen (aka Kroot) look quite spectacular!

Rico's rules are fun and fast paced. Just enough for a good game, but simple enough to keep such a big game from bogging down.

As for the Parrotmen auxilliaries, I am quite pleased with how they turned out. I'm going to start a thread for my Dutch at some point.

Great battle, isn't there anything else you could have squeezed in? I can't recall seeing a Luxembourg contingent in there, so you lose marks for that  lol

Love the adobes. I'm still struggling to get good results with my efforts. Good to see yours are very similar to the ones I'm aiming for in Mexico/California and will suit both theatres  :D

That's pretty amazing, the scale, the scope, the implausibility... I don't mind if there were no Luxembourgians, it's good to see Ottomans and Dutch getting an airing because they're certainly among the lesser-spotted armies. In fact, I've seen more Venusian Parrotmen than Dutch, and the Dutch were invented ages before Parrotmen.

Anyway, top-hole 19th century impossible adventurousness! Good on y'all!
Title: Re: Hotlead Sunday morning VSF bring and battle - PIC Heavy!
Post by: jamesmanto on May 22, 2010, 03:18:01 PM
The scale and scope is very much determined by who shows up with what troops.

We try and have a very general scenario and then fit people into whichever side depending on what army they've brought a contingent for.

So it gets wierd. I don't think I saw any silly hats this year though.

Perhaps someday I'll convince someone to build VSF Austrians. Hmmm... maybe I should...!

So anyone know where one can find mid to late 19th century Austrian figures?  :D

I suppose I could just use fellows in pith helmets but that wouldn't be any fun would it? What's the point of Austrians without flashy hussar and uhlan regiments?  ;)

There are a couple of ranges of 1859 Franco-Austrian figures available. Maybe too early for your needs. Also Renegade do some 1914 figures, but these might be too late for your needs  :(

Maybe you could use German colonial types and customize the uniforms into something more "Austrian"? Maybe substitute white for the Germans' grey/khaki? Give them red facings and piping etc and a few national flags and you might just get away with it  :)

Those cossacks are great! What are they riding?

Also what nation is that with the parrotmen, those are very convincing conversions.

Utterly brilliant stuff and very inspiring. Adding to favourites (you should see the 'cool VSF stuff' links in my favourites!!!  lol)

But in this case, I think you have outdone yourself with the kroot!   :-*

The Cossacks are riding these:

Riders themselves are Redoubt, from their Victoriana range.

Those are my Dutch Parrotmen. :) Loyal soldiers of the King and fierce Calvinists. The Dutch missionaries did wonders on Venus.  ;)

But in this case, I think you have outdone yourself with the kroot!   :-*

Thank you! They were fun to make and paint. They are a Frankenstein's quilt of GW Kroot and Perry plastic Napoleonic rifflemen.  I will post better pics soon. I am thinking about a mounted unit on Mage Knight Warbirds, but that will have to wait until after the Panther Panzers....

I have another three or four painted units that have been finished since the game and will start a thread once I get some decent photographs.

Thanks for the kind words Lads!! The rules are quick and simple,  based around and highly modified Space 1889 Soldiers Companion and some similar stuff from Dangerous Dan Hutter.

If James had not fallen asleep the British/Indian reinforcements could have arrived to save the day!!!!

As it was Sterling Mooses' Russians had a distinct tactical advantage by the time we had to call it quits.  On a historical note??? His Cossak Spiders have died to the last man in EVERY game I have hosted.  The Russin Steam Tinkers were all shot to bits by the British Naval Brigade. (Apart from the two that broke down). Those Stoic Russian infantry just kept on advancing dispite horrible losses. Well fought Moose!

I was a bit hesitant to allow off world colonial troops on the board but the Parrotmen were just too pretty to resist.

I think everyone who played had a goodtime. We were all having a good chuckle about the sleeping British/Indian General as well!

The mechanical riding Cossacks look scarier than they are to be honest.

I knew I'd be bagged so my troops didn't even make it onto the troopship!

I blame the rules!!   :D

Seriously though, they epitomise my view of the VSF world.  Kooky looking steam things that perform poorly, are constantly prone to breaking down and really only serve as bullet magnets to every enemy soldier on the board.

It's the flesh and blood troops that carry the day every time.

Long live the Tsar!!

But if I remember correctly it was one unit of steam tigers that crushed the Tsarist left flank in the last big game single handedly.....

That was a fluke.   :D

Maybe, but it was a magnificent fluke. Lets revisit it, shall we?  ;)

THe full squad of 10 Tigers led by Colonel Moran, charge the Russian position

They recieve an incredible amount of fire from the Infantry and Artilery. Five are lost, but the charge continues

Bloody hand to hand combat ensues but the Tigers are triumphant. However only Colonel Moran and his trusty  Daffadar Narayan Singh survive. Do our heros hesitate? Do they retreat? NO. They continue the charge onto the Russians native allies, seriously outgunned and outmanned.

Destroying them utterly

The two looked at eachother in disbelief. They were still alive. " Shall we continue on Narayan Singh, my valliant friend?" "Aye Sahib," replies the heroic Sikh, "let us send all of these Russian devils to hell!" They continued their charge

Again, the fighting is fierce, 2 against 11. Russian casualties are heavy. The two heros have 3 wounds inflicted on them, needing to roll three sixes in order for both to survive. The British player apprehensively rolls his dice.......

AND

Triumph. The remaining Russians flee and the Tsar himself is visible to Moran for a moment as he is led away by the few bodyguards that he has left.

:D Moran was given the Victoria Cross for his heroic actions.

Full disclosure, the shame of that day was not Sterling Moose's to feel. He was in command of the other flank, the successful one.
