I started to paint some African explorer, hunter and trader, as well as some Massai for a small game. Here are the first pictures…

The lions are from Reaper, the rest is Foundry.

Frank, stop it will you. You are putting us all to shame with all these wonderful posts. ;)
The "lived in, grubby look" on the explorers is fantastic. We see far too many pristine pith helmets really.

Some of the best Colonials I have ever seen. That rather dark colour scheme together with an excellent photography makes a very dramatic presentation.
-
Oh yes. This guy is good. We need to clone another Frank to concentrate just on Colonials, so the original one can carry on with the Samurai and Fantasy stuff. More, please! :)
-
:o
Very, very nice.
Love your style and love those cats!
-
Excellent job on all!! I like how you did the photos.
-
Can't help but to loo again: the elephant grass looks very good to. Effective idea to mix the plastic grass with tan rubberised horsehair.
-
Great stuff, man!
Reminds me of an old movie, called "East of Sudan"
-
Superb! I love the figures, scenery and the skilfull use of photos for the backdrops. :-*
-
Brushwork on the lions is just amazingly good !!!
-
magnificent!
-
Superb! It's so real you can hear the sounds and feel the fear!!! :-*
-
Thanks a lot!!! :)
-
Absolutely gorgeous. :-*
Love the male lion in particular.
-
Superb! :-* :-*

As I have promised, here are some WIP pictures of my savannah trees. The first step is to make the main structure from winding wire. In the second step you have to create the tree bark. There different kind of method to do that…I have used very fine sawdust which I have glued on the wire. After the glue has dried, I glued some filter floss / filter cotton on the upper side of the branches (only a very small amount!), this will present the small twigs. Now you have to give the tree a basic colour. Because of the filter floss you have to use spray paint / airbrush. In the next step you have to glue (spray) the leaves on the upper side of the filter floss. I have used “Noch – Laub hellgrün No. 07142”, but this depends on the size of the leaves you want to present. In the last step I gave the tree trunk a drybrush and I also gave the leaves a small amount of brown spry paint. That’s it.

Great trees Frank :)
Can you tell me please, which plastic aquarium grass product you used for your tall grass clumps? I have been unable to find the right kind of size and shape here in the UK so far... ::)
Thanks.

excellent trees
-
Love them trees and excellent looking Massai :-*
-
Oh, those trees are excellent! :-*

As if I don't have enough projects on the go, I'm itching to have a go at this period and these pics are doing nothing to disuade me!
Lovely work bud.

@Captain Blood: I use deco-grass mats, the version with short blades (3 cm). You will find them in a garden-center or deco-shop. First step is to glue one piece of grass on a circular base. Than I use some small amount of brown spray-paint to tone down the bright green colour of the grass. In the middle of the grass I glue (hot glue) a bundle of hemp sealing. You can easily trim the hemp with a scissor. Here the pictures of the material:

Thank you Frank. I shall see if I can buy some of that... :)

Excellent how-do thanks.
Never heard of heap sealing - what is it's actual function?

I think plumbers use it for the joints of pipes. It's the old fashioned version of that white tape they now use inside screw fittings.
Although I could be completely wrong ::)
-
Wow! What great figures.
-
Very nice brushwork Frank an I love the cats in particular, well done.

-
Frank, I'd like to tidy this thread up and place a copy in How to if I may.
-
Sure, go ahead.

Great stuff! Keep it coming.
-
Marvelous. Could we have pictures of the making-off, e.g. close-ups and wider angles of the scenery? The way the bases blend with the earth, and the way the background photo is used is amazing. How do you achieve that?
-
It's great to see more of your jaw-dropping round 5 entry here- Just beautiful! :-*
-
the PJ are simply marvellous, especially the lions
who makes them?

Photoshop software or somesuch I assume… ;)
-
I really enjoyed voting for these fellas. You have a very distinct way of painting and framing your miniatures and I love it. Very effective altogether and the pictures achieve their goal admirably. And in all the awesomeness... there are the lions...the bee's knees!
-
Lions...marvellous
Skin colour...marvellous
Shield design and execution...marvellous
Photography...marvellous
Overall...marvellous...jolly well done and pleasure to look at and drool over
Thank you :-*
-
They are all well done to put it mildly, but those lions! :-*
-
Thank you all for the kind words! :D
@Renaud: I will try to create a picture “making off” in the next weeks…I am a little bit busy at the moment, working on the next entries for the LPL! o_o Please be therefore somewhat patient!
-
I made some more pictures of my lions (Primaeval Designs and Reaper)…

Stunning work :-*
Cheers,

-
Your camera work and ability to nicely blend out the bases make for some fantastic photos.
As said, a number of times before, lovely lions!
-
:-* Made my lunchtime, cheers ;)
-
Excellent work. Any pointers on how to get the skin tones of your Maasai warriors.
-
Your terrain is stunning.
I have your masai fighting lions photo as wallpaper in my computer.
Congrats for your work. Inspire me for my own works.
-
Thank you!!! :)
-
No words ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Superb work! Love them all! Always been a huge fan of those hunter figures. I am right in saying they are from Foundry?
Thanks for sharing,
Steve
-
Outstanding stuff!! :-* :-* :-* I think I could very happily study those photo's for hours on end. Theres nothing not to love there, both the painting of the figures and the scenery is first rate.
-
I do believe the "original" use for hemp sealing was for caulking wooden ships, a wooden mallet pounded the stuff between the clinks and then some sort of tar like substance is applied to waterproof the hull. And I good be wrong, too. There's another name for it but brain is tired and should be asleep along with the rest of me.
-
Missed the update what with being away and all, but had to comment, even if it was a little late. I think you deserve a Royal Geographical Society Medal for this one, Frank. This is up there with discovering the source of the Nile.
-
Thanks to the LPL I was able to paint some more Masai, animals and villagers…

Frank,
Those cattle are things of beauty :-* :-*and better fed than any Massai cattle that I have ever seen pictures of. I can easily see any number of brush wars started over them. They are the god damned Hellen of Troy of cattle!!
LB
-
I think i love that cow .. :o
-
Gorgeous painting and photography and lush lighting. Applause!
-
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Beautiful shots as usual, love that red sky :-*
-
Beyond perfect :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Excellent! Who makes the cattle and goats? They don't look like the Foundry ones, at least I've not seen them painted that well before :)
Looks like a new standard has been set once again, and I have so many cattle to do...
-
Thank you boys! :D
The cattle and goats are made by Empress Miniatures.
-
:-*
Great thread! More fantastic miniatures!
Thanks for keeping all you Masai stuff on the same thread. Will be useful in the future.. ;)
-
Great pictures 8)

Superb! :o :-*

As if I needed another head turning moment and enough unfinished projects I saw this! Great work and love the "careworn" Explorers!!
-
This is pure art. :-*
-
:o Great painting and excellent photos. Not an easy job if you don't have the right lighting and a good camera.
-
How on earth did I miss this?!?
Pages of inspiration - wonderful work Frank!
-
I swear I saw one of them breathe just now!
Superb. Absolutely brilliant.
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Einfach nur der Hammer.
-
I had missed the cows. They are sublime. Great painting Frank.
-
Just wow on the cow. And now back to the original post and photo four - since you've been complemented on everything else - I think it is time to say that you did a great job on the "angle of the dangle"! lol
-
Frank I just love your stuff! As ever!
