Title: Biggest "Little" Zombie project
Post by: Prof. Dietrich Hes on August 06, 2006, 05:13:00 AM
Here is a project I have been tinkering with for a while.  You can see from the damage on the buidlign that it has sat for a while not taken care of.

The premise of this project is to simulate what you see in most zombie movies, not 10, not 25, not 50....  but HUNDREDS of zombies!

So, what I decided to do was use 10mm figures and make a city scape out of paper terrain.  Each "team" of either zombie hunters, survivalists, or army troopers will be based a few together and the mobs of zombies will be the same.

The object...  Get out of town with whatever means at your disposal.

The basic plan for the town will be a 4x6 board.  which will have around 24 city blocks.  I will also try to have certain locations that have been in films.

Enough of me blathering on, Here is a shot of the "mob" of zombies attacking the trauma canter.  Just note that this is only around 50 of the almost 400 zombies I have painted already, so you can see the look I am going for.  the trauma center was a test build on a 11 by 11 board, this will be scrapped for the larger briefcase style board I am building.

Great idea and the Zombie horde looks great, but I would not use the paperbuildings....I have no idea yet what would be better. But there must be something !

Bjorn,
my reasoning for the paper was two fold.  First it is very light, second it is super cheap to build the city.

The closets equivalent RR scale is "N", and I would wind up spending hundreds of dollars on the setup.

My design for the layout is to have the entire city in a briefcase style box, that can be opened up to reveal a large board.  when finished it can be closed up and put away for safe keeping.

Also with the buidlings, I purchased the PDF of the building parts, so I can print as many as I need for nothing more than the ink and paper.

Granted if you can think of an alternate idea, I am open for suggestions.

cardboard and you glue the PDF prints on the cardboard.
Or the architecture plastic. Iam sorry I dont have the correct word in mind right now. Its very thin plastic and Architects build there model houses out of it. Guys in Germany use it for bases of there miniatures. You can glue the prints on the plastic as well. I think its not that expensive. And if we have it in Germany you definately have it in the States !

Bjorn,
now I completely understand what you mean by not using paper terrain.

What I do is print the material on 110 pound cardstock.  Since the pieces are designed to have an extrerior and interior, you fold the pieces in half to do this.  so the structures are very strong and can take a pretty good beating.  Granted dropping a book on it wouldnt do very well.

so technically I dont do "paper" terrain, it is cardstock.

Really cool idea, that's going to look fantastic.  Good luck with everything.

2 questions: Where do you get 10mm zombies from? and by what percentage do you reduce your Worldworks stuff to get it to the right size?

Undead Jon,
All the figures are from Pendraken.  The zombies are from the fantasy range, and the civilians are from the scifi range, there are male and femals.  The zombies are clothed in a fairly generic "modern" style, so they work without any issue. The civilians are also in a simple style of clothes so they work with no modifications.

When I first started making the sets, I simply printed them "To Fit" on a 3x5 index card.  But I did run into problems as some of the pages are not 8.5x11, so I did run into scale issues as everything was not the same scale.  I am now starting over with a new program and pulling he images off of the PDF and resizing them to be 32% of the original.  and then printing them out on 3x5 index cards. I can not get my printer to print directly to 32% of the original that is why I have to pull off the images first.  The smallest mine will reduce it to is 50% which is too big.

I'm planning on getting some "N" scale vehicles to fill out that portion.

Like I had stated, the whole reason for doing in it 10mm was to simulate the HORDES of zombies you would face during the "fall".  Granted you wont have the individual characters and such, but I want to see if it is possible to make it through the undead and still make it for your goal.

Let me know if you need anymore info.

Thanks for that.

A friend of mine at my local gaming club has recently done a "Black Hawk Down" skirmish game in 10mm (sounds crazy, but it works really well, if anybody's got the new Wargames Journal mag it's in there), and seeing this post made set off lightbulbs in my head (especially as he's also just got into All Things Zombie) :)

http://heritage-studios.com/zombie/howazombiegameshouldlook.AVI

its a AVI file so everyone should be able to view it

let me know what you think

And if you are wondering, that is only about 15-20% of the zombies I have

Wow. You must have a miniature graveyard they keep popping out from!

I've got some N-scale cars you can have. Contact me by e-mail and I'll pop them in the mail for you. The local train shop is really great, too, so if you need something specific (like an APC for the National Guard, or some National Guard infantry) I can get you those, too.

I'm kind of sad that this domain has gone away, I was interested in seeing the terrain used here.  Did you happen to post these elsewhere Prof?

Edit: I should have checked his profile first, he hasn't been active since 2006.  Darn.  I would really like to see 10mm modern day terrain.
