I have spent the last evening taking a break from painting my lot of Tabletop World buildings to scratch-build a gallows scenery piece.

Very good work 8)

Great work :-*
I love the distressed look to all the wood. How do you do it?
-
That looks so cool!! It reminds me of the scene from the one Pirates of the Carribbean movie when they were going to hang all of the pirates at the same time. Very inspirational. Thanks for sharing.
Regards,
Hitman
P.S. Can't wait to see the fnished product!!

I will suspend judgement until it's finished. lol
That shouldn't take long - I can't imagine he would leave us hanging.
-
LOL
Thanks for your replies!
I filed the edges of the sticks with a... file. It took quite some time to do this on every single piece that was used but I think it does a lot for the overall look. By the way, that is why the entire piece is covered in pencil lines - to indicate the upper/visible side of the sticks; the others are not filed.
I just base-coated the gallows so hopefully I can post pictures of the finished item soon. But where do I post it? Swashbucklers? Old West? ???

Wow! But what kind of place are they living, that you'll need to hang three at a go? Or are they just planning ahead for bigger and better things?
That is gorgeous. I look forward to seeing the finished product (and I'm more than slightly jealous).

Great stuff. Are the pencil lines indented to give texture when painted? Very patiently done.
-
Just noticed the trap lever. Great project. :-*
-
Again, thank you for the kind comments!
Pencil lines - As I said above the lines are only meant to help me during gluing/assembling so I glue them correctly so that the "detailed" side is visible.
Three at a time - I don't know really... For some reason when I thought about how to do the gallows I wanted to have it larger from the start. Now that I wrote a scenario for it I realize how good a decision this was. One player has to free the three captives, each freed one (who escapes off the board) provides 1 victory point. This way you can clearly determine a scenario winner while experiencing a mix of saved and lost captives. Additionally, during a campaign you can play this scenario once three members of your Crew/warband/group have been captured by the authorities. I think it is a good decision from a game design perspective.
So I can definately recommend doing such a piece. It's fun little project with a lot of gaming potential.

Really nice build - I see only one problem though - the bases won't drop through the trapdoors!
No one's ever gonna croak on this thing. lol

I finished painting the gallows. More photos can be found on my blog (http://cianty-tabletop.blogspot.com/2010/06/gallows-finished.html). Enjoy!

Lovely stuff!

That's a wonderful centrepiece. My half-timbered town needs one! (I might have to steal your design ;)) Lovely job cianty.
-
That's a real centre-piece for a game. Well done. :-*
-
Very nice... :) the wood looks very realistic, I will definately copy this idea.
-
That's very good indeed. Surprised there's no gallows crows though.
-
bravo, a very nice piece indeed, your wood looks great
