Title: Wars of The Roses - The Earl of Surrey
Post by: Captain Blood on June 04, 2010, 11:41:08 AM
Thought I should have at least one serious historical character represented in my growing collection of Perry WOTR figures... Here's Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey and a portion of his retinue...

Actually, the mounted metal figure is supposed to be the Earl of Warwick, but what the heck - it's just a bloke in armour on a horse, so now he's the Earl of Surrey.

The colour scheme and livery marks are (I believe) historically accurate. More or less  ;)

The man himself. Great figure this... I wasn't going to buy too many of the metals for this range, but now I've ordered a load more!

These two are minor conversions. What I'm really loving about these Perry plastics is how easy they are to cut about a bit and do slightly interesting things with...

And another conversion - a dead 'un. Great fun to make. Just cut the figure off his base, squash him, attach arms at odd angles, and Bob's your uncle...

I've now finished the first box of 40 figures and am onto the second box. In due course I'll take a few shots of the whole 40 together so you can see what a boxload looks like  :)

Looking great Captain Blood.  The Red & White really look rich in color.

Nice job on the casualty figure.  I'm been contemplating doing that with some of the Perry's ACW I'm painting at the moment.  Now that I've seen yours turned out well, I believe I'm gonna give it a shot now.

Fantastic job. I love the archer shouting to his mates most of all. Something about the way you painted that face is very striking. I keep staring at him and expecting him to move.  :-*

Arrrghhh....

WotR broke out almost immediately after the 100YW, so these models should also work for late that one...

And, of course, for any game calling for armoured human soldiers.....  o_o

EDIT:

And I just now realized, just why your painting seems so rich in colour: You go heavy on the shades, with very little contrast in the highlights..... thus maintaining the impression of the main colour instead of making the colours flat/chalky....

Bloody marvelous Cap'n  :-*, if my resolve had not already have given way it would have now. You are right about them being infectious, I only intended to assemble and paint one to see how I got on with them but ended up doing ten o_o

Start saving for more metal, the greens that Michael had on show at Partizan are superb.

I've found them infectious too, finished three boxes now and some metals and everytime i finish i find myself getting another box. Could'nt make Partizan so any details of the new greens?

Lancastrian command on foot, 3 only on show similar to mounted although one was a clerical looking figure.
Men at Arms, standing, with one bearheaded holding helmet
Men at Arms attacking

Yorkist command will follow and civilians mentioned, Michael did mention others but I can't remember, I think marching billmen were mentioned though.

Shaun, they're really very easy and quick to stick together, and I have to say, very enjoyable to make as well. Takes me back to my Tamiya days  :)

Yes James. All the others are plastic.

:-* :-* :-* A Surrey, a Surrey! ....

But has he got a fringe on top?

I guess we'll never find out. ::)

Yet again superbly done. I love the shade of chestnut you've used for his nag.

I can't wait until you get them all on one of your lovely layouts and take some proper action shots  ;D

I shall try not to disappoint!

Alas, I have another batch of these figures waiting to appear in a painting comp elsewhere, so can't really show the whole ensemble until that's played out... But in the fullness of time  ;)

Magnificent work, Richard. I'm an early feudals man, but you could really bring me to start the later periods as well with your work ...

They are really impressive. I do like the painted bill staves, straight from Norfolk's armoury! Looking forwards to seeing the next offering.  :)
