Well, you’ve seen almost all these figures before in dribs and drabs, but here’s the entire ECW collection – now complete, at least for now - on the tabletop together. It’s almost 3 years work, although to be fair I have been painting quite a lot of other stuff as well in this time!
The figures are mostly Bicorne and Renegade, with a few TAG and one or two figures from Warlord, Redoubt and Copplestone.
Purists will immediately notice the almost total absence of pikemen – that’s because I’m mainly going to use this collection for large scale skirmish gaming along hedgerows, in village streets and through sieges – not for open field battles which hold little interest for me. Skirmishing pikemen seem a bit of an anomaly, so to be honest, I haven’t really bothered with them for the most part.
Painting: Foot mainly painted by C17th maestro, Baner; Horse, guns, and crews painted by me, with a unit or two of horse just completed for me by the excellent Redzed. (I confess that having painted more than 90 horses and riders, I ran out of steam for the last 15 or so, and subbed them out!) Flags and the basing of all figures is down to me, and the terrain is too - except the buildings which are cheap and cheerful Conflix pieces.
I’d love to tell you this was an actual game in action, but I’m afraid it’s not. The first game will actually be in about a month’s time. For the purposes of taking some pictures of the collection, I set up the table, deployed, and then moved the units into what feels like a reasonable early-mid game situation as the two armies are about to join battle in earnest…
Hope you like it :)

Absolutely stunning! :o There are no words I can think of to show how lovely that is. At first glance some of those pictures look like a reenactment.
-
This is THE best thing I have seen on here, and I've seen some fantastic stuff in this forum. :o
What do I need to do to get put in your will and inherit these?
-
Marvellous display, enough to make absolutely anybody jealous. Can't see how you could better it tbh.
-
:o :o :o Really impressive :-* :-* :-*
Now some questions… ::)
Which manufacturers do the best overall* ECW figures in your opinion? (*Artillery, Infantry and Cavalry)
Do you think that doing the basing on all the figures yourself helps to make the different painting styles come together? (not that yours and Redzed’s are that different)
What size are the bases of the Cavalry figures? (Just out of curiosity)
-
Stunning, Cap'n, absolutely stunning.
Can you tell us how many figures are on the table? (You know I'm an obsessive for details like that!)
-
100% amazing! :-*
-
:-*
Simply wonderful. That table is still looking great too, crammed with painted goodness! 8)
-
That is just incredible Captain! :-* I would love to heard what is being fielded there too! :D

this is simply amazing Sir !
I just like to watch the scenery and miniatures and start dreaming.
Thank you !

:-*
Wonderful!
What a super collection and board!
-
That just made my year. I'll be back to ask questions after I change my pants and maybe have a smoke. :-*
-
Thats what i call a full English! :-*
-
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I have been having a bit of a problem motivating myself to keep painting my ECW figures. Motivation is no longer a problem.
These figures are truly inspirational and a joy to look at. And the terrain is outstanding as well.
-
Stunning work Captain :o :o :oThank you for sharing ,it was a great way to start my Day
-
Thank you gentlemen :)
There are:
105 mounted figures, 135 infantry and foot officers, 20 artillerymen supernumeraries, and 6 guns.
The table is 200mm x 120mm (4 x 120mm x 50mm foam boards).

Calimero, The answer to your questions are:
1. Bicorne, no shadow of a doubt as far as I'm concerned.
2. Yes, there are three painters here, but the unity of the basing helps bring them together.
That said, I did ask Baner and Redzed to take on some of the painting because I liked their styles and thought them not too dissimilar from my own ;)
3. The horses are mounted on 30mm x 60mm laser cut MDF. The foot are on 25mm washers.
Cheers.
Richard
-
AMAZING!!!! :o
If I had any interest in doing the ECW, this would have sent me right out ordering. Everyone of those manufacturers should be begging to use your photos.
-
Thanks for your answers Richard, that’s much appreciated 8)
Once again, that’s a stunning work… Just complete a project is, in itself, a feat in the wargaming world ;)
-
The fact that the units aren't in perfect rectangles but individually based makes for the livliness of the scene.
What rules do you intend to use for your large-scale skirmishes?
-
There is absolutely nothing I can add to the superlatives. Without doubt the best ECW "game" I have seen!
Pat
-
Absolutely fantastic Richard. :o
Even though I have seen the terrain and other examples of your painting close up this is still hugely impressive. The kind of presentation that many here might aspire to. Truly inspirational figures, terrain and photography (and I'm not really into horse & musket at all!)
-
That sir, is quite simply gorgeously stunning
-
I am totally stuck for my own words so I will just reuse all of Overlords.
Absolutely fantastic Richard. :o

Totally agree. Out-standing work Richard.
-
Splendid stuff Sir, tis a joy to behold :-*
-
Oooph! That's a lot of of greatness to digest in one go. Fantastic, Richard! I envy the fellows who will get to game with them,
On to WOTR, eh?
-
Absolutely amazing, Richard, I'm deeply impressed: what a table, what a collection of brilliantly painted miniatures!
:-* :-* :o :-* :-*

Lovely collection Richard.

That's amazing!

Ditto, I remain speechless...
-
Outstanding! Absolutely. It was a thrill looking at all those pictures. Your painting style really brings out the detail of the figures. :-*
-
I have to go in to work this morning, which combined with England's poor result yesterday is quite depressing.
Seeing all this has cheered me up though and I'll now be a much happier bunny :D
Probably the best "not-game" pics I've seen all year. Now I'm really looking forward to your WOTR project reaching a similar stage.
-
Beautiful Richard, absolutely beautiful :)
Remember, if you need any other players to join in, you know where to come ;) (I could even come in uniform to help make it feel even more real lol )
May I venture to say about making this a sticky simply because of the high level that we all aspire to and I can see people asking about it in the future.
cheers
James
*edited for awful grammar*

Mind blowingly good work. Really inspirational stuff. Thanks for sharing.
BTW Conflix may be cheap 'n' cheerful but I'm rather fond of them. Along with Scenix they're the best prepaints
I can think of without taking on the national debt of Iceland.
-
Just what I have been waiting to see. Eye candy at its finest. It ranks up there with Googling images of Salma Hayek, Claudia C and Michelle Ryan ;D :-*
Wonderful and as Jimbbblywibbly says, if you are ever short of players ;)
-
I'm so unbearably jealous - this is exactly what I always aspire to acheive and fall far short of.
I can't think of any superlatives that haven't aready been used.
-
Beautifully crisp, evenly-lit, well-composed photography too.
-
Bloody outstanding. :o
I really, really need to get my ECW miniatures out of storage and paint them. But they'll probably exceed the allowed luggage weight on the flight back to Blighty. Darn. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.
-
This is so fantastic, almost breath taking. Richard this is a masterpiece and you can be really proud of it!
-
Chapeau!
That is realy a fantastic table.
-
oooohhhh, just ooohhhhh :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Nothing to add. Superbe, monsieur! :-*
-
Thank you everybody very much.
Such warm words from so many painters and modellers whose work I admire, mean a lot :)
-
such gorgeous work, I'm off to eat my paintbrushes now
-
Beautiful, I love the colors used.Makes me sad I sold my ECW army off, :'(sob.I got good money for it and the reasoning was my bud has enough for 10 people to use.
I almost, almost ordered a bunch of Bicorne and Renegade after seeing this. But I already spent my 6 months wargame allowance(self imposed) on 600 WSS and late 17th Century figures from Front Rank :) Maybe later this year.
Pete

... But I already spent my 6 months wargame allowance(self imposed) on 600 WSS and late 17th Century figures from Front Rank ...

Well if it will make you feel better you can paint them for me Calimero lol

Amazing, and that's from someone who has almost no interest in the ECW, amazing.
-
That is some wonderful work, Captain! :-* The board is beautiful and so are the figures. Many many thanks for sharing with us unworthy!

Stunning work a joy to behold :-*

I have no words :-* :-*
Captain you are a Maestro,
wonderful the river effect
Piero

Really stunning.
Thanks for sharing.
-
Really stunning!
-
I'll admit that I'm impressed!
I cannot begin to fathom how you can be so focused. The painting is nice - top knotch - but I could do the same in theory... but never on this scale! lol
Hope to see it with me hands at some point. ;)
(really this is stunning!)
(I'm thinking you achieved it all through your vast donations to the P.JAckson Fanclub, who in return has let you use the WETA workshop to help you out ;D )
-
Well, I actually have no interest in the ECW :` but I have to say I am strongly impressed by your dedication :o and the results! :-*
Far beyond anything I ever could do on my best day! Yes, I'm jealous. lol
"Wow! All he could say was 'Wow!'"
Gracias,
Glenn

Beautiful,... and so much so I had to log in, for the first time in yonks, to show my appreciation.
(Although I feel obliged to point out that somebody has told me that the species of Cabbage in that plot of land was not cultivated until at least the 18th century... he should know, I think he was born around then and, sadly, remains extant....and not extinct ;) )

Thanks again, chaps. Much appreciated :)

Ah yes, one or two people on a certain other forum clearly take things far too seriously to be completely sane :)

Cap'n Sir, you're patience is a virtue.
-
Wow. No other words do justice.
-
This is the best table-top setting I've ever seen, regardless of genre/period. The attention to detail on all the figures and terrain is just marvellous. You make me want to do historicals again. I must resist the lure.
-
Ah yes, one or two people on a certain other forum clearly take things far too seriously to be completely sane :)
Which forum? Name & shame... ;)

I can, I can, I can (well, at least one ;D )

Which forum? Name & shame... ;)
I wouldn't dream of pointing the finger... ;)
Let's just say it's home to one or two rather picky types, whose social skills don't appear to be at quite the same level we're used to here on Lead Adventure ::)
I'm saying no more.
-
I'm saying no more.
"Say no more, say no more... 'photography', eh? Nudge-nudge, wink-wink". ;)
Anyway, whoever you are referring to, good Captain, they must be a bunch of taste-deprived nincompoops.
-
Chris, sometimes I do worry that you are just a bit too steeped in English culture ;) lol
(A huge row has now broken out between several people over there - not the fault of my pictures!)

Jeez, at first glance I thought you wrote "stepped", as if I cannot remove it from my soles now... ;)

Ah, it's their way of life.

snorbs - Or: orbs (of snow) , slangonym for female breasts. See breasts for synonyms and euphemisms.
Looks like you'll just have to snorb it up. Ha.. ha ....... ha. OK It's not funny.
Oh and now that this thread is on it's 5th page - shouldn't you retire it and start working on something new. You have to double the amount of figures to impress us next time. :` lol (joke)
-
brilliant Richard,
that table gets a workout mate and just looks supurb with whatever period you play!
cheers

I've been drooling over these pictures for a few days now I would just like to say thanks for showing us up , I mean showing them to us. (another project that has to be put away till I've forgotten about Captain Bloods painting skills :-* )
-
What can I say that has not been said? Brilliant :D........................ :-*
-
Gorgeous stuff, great pics 8)
-
Simply stunning :-* :-* :-*
-
:o
I've said it before and I'll say it again, these pics are probably the most inspiring I have ever seen!
(Royalist Cuirassiers and all! ;))
To my mind, It's very evocative of the kind of smaller actions that took place all over the country at that time, when pikemen would have been of limited use.
Thanks for pointing out the thread on that 'other forum' haven't had such a laugh in a long time! lol
Keep up the sublime work!

Wow! :o
-
:o OK, I'll just settle for watching football for the rest of this month... o_o
-
Damn you Captain Blood,
You have diverted my energy in completing my WWI project, an inspired me to pick up the brush and revisit my languishing Royalist army.
Fortunately the reinforcements I need from Renegade are a lot more affordable than when I bought their ECW range when they first came out.
My question to you sir, is which colours/brand did you use to achieve the purple/crimson, blue, and yellow buff for the Royalist horse? also any recommendations on the yellow required to do Talbot's foot? I was thinking of trying the Foundry paint system for the first, instead of my usual Coat D'Arms or Reaper pallets?
Many thanks for any assistance,
Nick
-
nickthegreek - thanks ;)
Honestly, I'm not sure of the colours I used on any particular figures now, as some of these were painted 1 - 2 years ago. But I only use Vallejo and occasionally GW paints, and the 'craft acrylic' which goes various names of Inscribe / Prism / Palmier.
I personally like my buff coats to be quite yellow - rather than buff. I also try to get slight tonal variations from figure to figure, some more brown, some more yellow. I can tell you that I always start from either GW 'snakebite leather' or Inscribe / Palmier 'caramel', with various amounts of Inscribe / Palmier black and white added for deeper tones or highlights, and added yellowness by mixing in a bit of Vallejo 'deep yellow'. It's a strong pigment, so you don't need much.
Think the purple / crimson is actually just a bright red with a bit of black mixed in, then gradually lightened with white to make a dusky pink. Similarly with the blue. Pretty simple really. I work from a few basic colours and use black, white and yellow to create more interesting hues. Can't be doing with all those squillions of colours available in the various systems.
-
WOW - WOW
:o :o :o
-
Breathtaking - great figures and terrain! :o
In fact I'm really jealous! :-*
-
Can you still get inscribe paints, they seem to have disappeareed?
iain
-
Can you still get inscribe paints, they seem to have disappeareed?
iain
Yes, you can, but Daler-Rowney stopped doing them under the Inscribe brand name - which (as far as I can tell) was just a relabelling of an imported craft acrylic called Prism made by Palmer in the States - exactly the same packaging, same colour names, even the same product codes - just a slightly different label.
But it's exactly the same stuff.
I now buy mine online from Fred Aldous in the UK. Which interestingly, they are still selling as Inscribe - even though they're sending out bottles of Prism ::)
Here you are: http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/shop-online/inscribe-59ml-acrylic-paint.htm
Don't make the mistake of buying Decoart or Anita's craft acrylic instead. They look like similar ranges, but both are horrible, viscous, semi-translucent sh*t. The Anita's being the worst of all.
Unlike the gorgeously smooth, opaque, matt (and ludicrously cheap!) Inscribe / Prism product. Best paint I use. Far superior to all the stupidly priced 'hobby' paint 'systems'. ;)
-

Thanks for the link Captain. One of our $2.00 shops here in Australia used to sell the range many years ago when I managed to stock pile a few bottles. They’re slowly running out so your link will come in handy... if they post to Australia.
-
Looking over the layout, there is only one small contribution needed to fully enjoy and appreciate it;
A full weekend free, friends to play the game out with, drinks and munchies, BBQ saturday evening, short nap time and finish the game up on sunday!!

Sounds almost like some of my GW paints lol ;)
Seriously, hearing that you have to buy your CRAFT acrylics online, makes me feel much better about the hardship I sometimes endure to get the hobby stuff I want.... :)
