Title: More Cheap@ss Badger Gun Trucks
Post by: Doomsdave on June 17, 2010, 12:35:41 AM
So I posted the first 2 of these trucks a few months ago.  They are repaints of some $1 dollar toy soldier not-hummers.  This is the finished squad of Gun trucks for my futuristic and modern gaming.  I added 2 Missile Trucks and a Command vehicle with a radar/sensor dome.  The stowage bits are from a Tamiya accessories kit I had laying around.  I think they came out OK.  Particularly for the price!

I second that question! I live in North Augusta, SC. Right across the Savannah River from Augusta, GA. I'd love to get my hands on five or six of those!!!

Cool modifications BTW!!!

I originlly got them at Big Lots.  They quit carrying them about a month ago.  This is the set though:

At Amazon they carried them but it currently says they are unavailable.

Found them at this website.  Never dealt with them though, so buyer beware.

They look just fine once they're painted up.

I've got a few of these.  Your work is a great example of what can be done with them.  I'll be borrowing many of your ideas.

Combat Storm had a convention special early this year/late last year that included this set with their rulebook, but they don't seem to have them now.

They tend to show up at Big Lots around certain holidays.  Christmas, Easter, etc.  I know I've seen a smaller set with only one Hummer at either Family Dollar or Dollar General.  Again, around Christmas.  They will likely show up again if you keep looking.

Absolutely brilliant - more so when you know they are soft plastic!

Your trucks are great, but I really like your Heroclix repaints.  I barely recognized the Con Artist.

Those not-Hummers are smashing! I can't believe how good you have made them look. I have a bunch for them myself but could not get myself to accept that as rides for my 28mm troops. They looked too tiny in comparison. Your Heroclix gals, being a bit larger, look perfect next to them.

My own are in the process of being converted into APCs.

These are actually pretty hard trucks.  They're not bendy like the soldiers that come with them.

Thanks everybody for the comments.

They are a bit biggish for typical figures.  I talked myself into it by rationalizing that the govt. would create "modern" versions of the battle tested model that were larger/bulkier/semi-armored.  Kind of like the Super Hornet and standard Hornet.

I wish BoomGirl was a little bit less pricey.  :-*

I think the scale of the not-hummers is very doable.

Wonder if I could get away with painting one a bright yellow and then put a number "3" on the front doors?

Yes, I think most of us who do not have everyday experience with military equipment will accept models that are somewhat out of scale, as long as they are not completely ridiculous.  Personally, I have only a vague concept of the actual size of a Hummer.  These are definitely within the "reasonably close" zone, as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for this information. The trucks a re a great size, though I don't like the missiles. The heavy bolter add on is an interesting choice. You can but 1/48 scale .50 cal machine guns to mount on the roof. Though that would jack up your overall truck cost buy $7 bucks.

I'm not sure I like those missiles. Where did you get the other gun modifications and the sensor dome?

Incidently the M48's in the shot look like the ones I picked up in a packet of soldiers and landing craft awhile ago. The M48's are almost the same size as the Corgi Diecast models. I intend cutting the tracks down and putting them in sandbagged positions for Nam or make them as destroyed or bogged markers. (not decided yet)

Most of the bits are either Tamiya accessories (the tarps and rolls etc.) the pioneer tools on the back of some are GW bits as are the bolter and turret combos.  The sensor dome is a scrap molded part from my workplace.  I have a bag of them that didn't meet spec.  They happily fit perfectly into the GW rhino turret assembly, as I wanted one that looked like a proper command vehicle of the near-future.

How does the tank, included in the bag, look scale-wise? Too small?

It's pretty convincing scale wise.  It has no bottom though, so I made one from plasticard and made the tank into a "Hulk-smash" target for my supers games. It makes pretty good backdrop scenery as well.  It won't win any competitions though, just like most of my stuff. I'll try to take a pic of the tank and send to you.

I hope no one minds if I post this here.  Since this is where the interest was started, it seemed like the right place for a follow up.

I saw the Battle Force Big Pack at my local Hobby Lobby.  Like alot of their stuff, there was only one, so I checked their online store.  This should link you right to the item http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/team-extreme-761908/ (http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/team-extreme-761908/)
Price: $3.99

Those little green army men are the same poses that I used to have as a kid.  Probably my favorite toy, and most likely the reason I'm still into little military men....
