Title: Welcome ye to the Spanish Main!
Post by: Digits on July 04, 2010, 03:20:57 PM
Again, having just posted my first thread in the Wild West section, I am very pleased to have found this forum - Pirates being another project I have on the go.   For progress todate, please see my thread

http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/topic/7353588/1/

But here are a few progress pics so far....

Early days yet, but I look forward to sharing ideas with you guys....

Sorry to change the thread name but starting a post on this forum has forced my hand into naming the port!

Arrr, that be nice, matey! Are those Hirstarts bricks you used for the quays?

Yup - they're pretty sweet to use.

The flag flooring is from Tabletop games, as will be the buildings though I will also scratch a few.

Awesome! I very much look forward to seeing this stuff develop. It's Tabletop World (http://www.tabletop-world.com/), by the way. I can't wait to see the Ruined Coaching Inn painted.

So it is - oops!

Anyway, I have the full inn, merchant house and smiths to paint up too, they'll all get done together.  Beautiful models all of them - I just wish they did more!

The tree is one of the various ones available from Pegasus models - very sweet.

Did you make the shells and fivefinger?

Cool!

I need some of those flag stones, do you have a link?

Cianty has posted the link mate.

Mattias - starfish/ seaweed yes, out of greenstuff.  Shells - no.  A bag of small shells (fousands of 'em!) will set you back £2.50 from Hobbycraft.

True.  To be fair though, the ruined inn and the forge come on their own base.  I've used about 2 ½ bags of flooring so far.  I have enough left to go either side of the back of the "canal".  I can well recommend it though, cleanly cast, free of release agent, easy to carve up for tricky fits etc.

Ta.

Started to paint the sea.  Not too adventurous with this.  It's meant to be in the Caribbean so blue sea is fine.  Brush strokes should be hardly noticeable once I put a layer of "water effect" on it.

Are you going with some sort of resin or a clear varnish?
Title: Re: Puerto Venganza
Post by: Digits on July 06, 2010, 11:19:52 PM
I'll happily accept any recomendations!   I was thinking of using the GW water effect but this is new territory for me.
Title: Re: Puerto Venganza
Post by: abu iskander on July 07, 2010, 01:26:06 AM
I haven't attempted resin in years.  The last time I did it, which was also the first time I did it, the stuff went cloudy on me and ruined the board.  I've settled for a less dramatic, but acceptable effect, using clear gloss varnish.

Again, I'm not the most experienced with water effects, so I'd look elsewhere for expert advice.

Cheers fellas.

Put the top half of the inn together.  Not the easiest kit to work with but minimum flash and almost perfect fit.  Some guide points under the floors would have helped.   Lovely kit though.

Many thanks fellas - glad you are enjoying it.  Not sure on the format over here on LAF but I'm used to posting wip updates as I find I get more help on the tricky bits that way.

Other news.

Taking inspiration from Astor, I've decided to have a go at converting this mega blok predator into something worthy of gaming over.  I plan for mine to look a little different though.

First up, to remove the pegs and that awful hunk of unsightly plastic around the base of the forward mast.  Plus, does anyone know how to disguise the torpedo tubes???

Righto, some key pegs removed plus the focsle plastic but most of all, I'm removing the centre raised sides.  Otherwise I'm restricted to 3 guns along it.   Needs sanding but too dark just now.

Wow, this looks like it'll be an interesting project to follow.

You're certainly a lot braver than I was when I did my ship (although I did seriously consider cutting away those center parts, and chickened out lol). The 'torpedo tubes' are tricky - I did consider a few things (like covering them with plasticard, etc) but nothing I did looked very good, so I left them alone in the end.

I can't wait to see what you come up with, both with the board and the ship!

I filled in the holes from the rams/torpedoes with green stuff, and did my bets to make it look like hammered metal decoration. Worked okay.

Sorry for the lack of progress - we'll try to do something about that....

Just sat down today to start converting this megablok ship.  Planking will look a little rustic but hey ho! lol

Christmas pressie from a friend after I told him I wanted a governor's mansion.  This will sit on the board behind the "canal".  I will be covering it in vines / tropical flowers and climbers and surrounding it in palm trees.  Courtyard to be fron the same Tabletop stones used elsewhere.   Needs chimney pots and a nesting bird but lots of open area for swashbuckling over!

Dragging this up from Davey Jones' Locker!  But the recent release from North Star of pirates for the osprey 7 seas has boosted me onwards......I bought the Blackbeard crew...awesome minis!

Right, I built the merchant ship and it's sat ready to paint.  I thought I'd also build the man o war and paint them together.

Pain in the proverbial sticking all that lead to the resin.  For those looking to buy one, I warn now that the gun hatches on the lower deck don't fit if you intend like me to have them closed and I had to carve them up.

No instructions so I've made up how to build certain parts, please don't correct me if I've misinterpreted but I'm happy with it.

Now here's a question, there is what I think to be another gun port at the rear but they don't give enough hatches / guns with the kit.    I've checked pictures of others on the net and it would appear they too don't have enough so it's not just me......but surely THAT IS A GUN PORT?

Now, the hard part is deciding HOW to paint them......

So, this morning I have primed both ships to black ( need to figure out a paint scheme now )

I have also flashed and based my favourite figures from the Blackbeard crew including Teach himself, lieutenant Richards his right hand man, trusted friend Caesar and Gunner Morton.

Going to start painting them today....

Cheers bud.  Yes I need to read through your thread with a keen eye as there may be a few things to pinch there!

As for the ships, yes, I'm not used to painting big stuff....a little daunted right now!

So, these North Star minis are fantastic...EVERY bit as good as Black Scorpion so they will mix together very nicely.

First up then Blackbeard.   I see I need to do his eyes.....but my own eyesight isn't what it was....to make him fiercer.

The crews looking great so far. I completely agree that the North Star minis are fantastic. And there's finally a Blackbeard mini I like and can use to represent the big man. I'll be painting my own to match my pirate reenactment kit (I dress as Blackbeard, lit slow match under the hat and all). Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing more.

So the avatar is a selfie?  Cool beans.

As you can see from the previous page, I reenact myself (usually ECW) but do dabble in pirates on occasion.  Sadly though, any more mishaps like that one and I won't be doing many more!

Yeah my avatar is indeed me. Crikey, missed the previous page somehow. Close call, I can completely understand that possibly putting you off! I do Viking and Saxon reenactment mainly but pirates is my thing. Even my Viking character's nickname is Blackbeard. The guys I do pirate stuff with reenact ECW too so I expect I'll be giving that a go next year at my local event.

Been thinking out the things I need to do with the port boards.

1 clear them.  I've been storing stuff on top of them this past year or so!

2 dust and clean them up and varnish the water.

3 figure out how to paint the tabletop World buildings I already have and maybe add a couple of the new ones.

4 build a rope bridge over the "canal" inlet and paint up more trees.

5 create rubber molds and cast plenty of barrels and cargo

6 make fishing nets and lobster pots, bunting and lanterns etc I want a lived in look.

7 make market stalls and a livestock pen.

8 finish and build the deep back boards (mansion board and another)

9 buy a sloop or two.

10 add lots of minis of course

No doubt add to this list as I go along....but enough to do there me thinks.

So, finally we begin to paint the ships.  Have to say I hit a mental brick wall with these.

None the less, opting for a simple understated scheme so I don't have to play with wood colours.   So far then, the main block / dry brushing.

Detailing next.

Ah this will do.    The detail on the rear figurines is awful....still not sure if meant to be a bloke on the right as there is no detail to go off on my cast!  Very tricky to handle one you have all the lead stuck on.

A pity the model doesn't come with a ships wheel!  Will have to source a good one and add it later.  I have a few canon to buy too.

However, for gaming purposes, finally glad to paint one.....next up, the man o war!

I may have one of their wheels somewhere....

And cheers, it reminded me to buy one of their jolly boats and their tenders (for conversion).

Their canon were a little small though so I bought mine from foundry.  Just need a few more plus Grubbs gunners.

Now, worried their swivel guns are too small too, I need to find alternates....

Cheers matey.  The back end was touch and go...the model detailing is awful.  All the other painted examples I've seen just paint it all in gold and don't try to pick out the figures!

Your gun hatches arrived thank you so I will add them to the big ship before I start painting it.

I can5 believe it’s been three years since I posted in this (but then it’s been three years since I actually did anything! Lol)

However, at my mates house last week and he produces a nice little laser cut sloop he’s assembled....next thing, we are all talking pirates again and thoughts turn to this abandoned project.......time to make amends!

I have just ordered a couple of packs of Blood and Plunder dogs....English and French boarding fellas.  I’m hoping they will give me the stock fellas I want for my crew.

Ive cleared the decks from my other hobbies so should put a little effort in I think.

A little progress then soon me hearties!  Arrrrgggh!

I don’t know but I think I may need to extend my port!

Ok so I was hoping to actually achieve something over Christmas but a chest infection put paid to that!

None the less, orders have been placed for a Reaper Arab pirate, Northstar Hood’s crew, an Ainsty sloop and a shark head and fin!  The sloop now means I’m lucky enough to have all three Ainsty ships.  Once they are all f8nished, I may have to start collecting Blood & Plunder ships! 🤔

I have managed to flash, clean, base and undercoat about a dozen gun crew and scurvy dogs along with 6 foundry canon, two chasers and 6 swivel guns.  So time to do a little painting I think.

Well finally managed to paint the guns from Wargames Foundry.

I love these guns but damn if they are not expensive!

Will need cheaper guns for the next batch.  These six plus the two chasers are destined for my man o’ war.

Still, I just came across the finished Blood and Plunder galleon and it has stirred up the desire to dig it out and do something.....

So, I’ve been sorting through my big box o pirate stuff.

Tabletop world houses to paint (not shown here the wrecked inn).

My boats.  I think the first I will paint will be the man o war.   I may just paint it rustic grey like the merchant.  There are various masts etc for the raft and small boats.

And a small selection of dockside cargo and booty.  I think I have more somewhere...but the idea is the dock will have big stacks of this stuff (I may need to get more) along with fishing nets etc for the lived in feel.

Go big or go home I say!

Thought these, sitting in port would be a good setting for a quick FFoL game, ahead of me deciding what rules to play with for future stuff.  I will need to paint a few more pirates too....

Also, in keeping with my recent desire to cross my projects, there are a few pirate minis among the Badgers and Burrows collection.  A port would be a good setting to play them too.

Ok, so we played two games….last nights was a lot of fun, the objective being to locate the buried treasure, then bugger off with it.  I don’t fully remember everything, except that before tea, I was rolling like a turnip and had lost two men…….must have had spinach for tea as I snatched victory out of the jaws…da di da…….and ended up finding the treasure the treasure on my first search in the sand, hauled it out and ran off, not before dealing with Redbeard and his motley crew!

Poor Pete…..winning one minute, loosing horribly the next! Lol

Anyway, now we were fully familiar with the rules, we decided this evening to play the “Hunt” scenario….searching for fresh meat!

Basically a number of piggywigs were snuffling about the island and we were hungry!

My fellas had a brainwave…..it hurt them……but they were going to smother themselves in truffle…..

I was the first to flush a pig out and it charged me.

My fella…Warf….dispatched him and started dragging him off for a roast.

Redbeard himself also flushed a pig, but he must really stink, because the beasts scarpered  and disappeared into the undergrowth before it could be dealt with!

Title: Re: Pirates of Puerto Venganza
Post by: Digits on October 13, 2021, 10:27:53 PM
I flushed out a second pig and it too charged me but it proved a bit harder to beat until Blackbeard waded in to the melee, and his cutlass made pork chops of it!

Pete wasn’t taking chances and having had the first hog run away, he surrounded a scrub patch with his pirates ready with their pistols before sending in a goon to flush it out……the pig charged him but his axe was true.

Ok….two pigs to one (assuming we could get them off the table!)

There was one left in the middle…….I wasn’t about to risk it falling into Scurvy Pete’s hands….so Abdab deliberately beat the bushes too loudly and the pig ran off! Huzzah!

Robbed of their bounty, Pete’s fellas switched to the attack and rushed me……with so many armed with cutlass AND pistol…the melees were bloody….and quick!

A few died …..the last being put down by old Teach himself with his trusty pistol!

Redbeard was down and wounded………so my guys stripped him, hog tied him and stuck a curly twig between his cheeks….leaving Redbeards crew a fitting gift for their pains!

Great fun game! Lol

Cheers, indeed fun was had….so much so, it has prompted me to do a bit more.

This morning I combed through a few boxes and pulled together a few unpainted pirates.

Decided I’m going to paint these fellas and have a go at the ship….

The minis are a mixed bunch from a few favourite manufacturers.

ns-bg-bs-ns-bg-bs-ns-ns

I like the Brigade games minis, but they are small which was I forgo the Wargames foundry minis.  However, as it’s a skirmish game, with no uniformed and ranked minis, real life dictates some of us are more vertically challenged than others!

I have to use foundry for canon crew just to get some variety.

The Black Scorpion are my favourites followed closely by the very characterful NorthStar minis.

Anyway, enough gibberish jabber…time to paint.

Nice! I especially like the guy holding his knife between his teeth while carrying an axe in one hand and waving a pistol about with the other.  There is no such thing as "too many weapons" for a proper pirate!

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the ship. I have the Reaper Bones pirate ship and am on the lookout for inspiration.
Title: Re: Pirates of Puerto Venganza
Post by: Digits on October 21, 2021, 08:51:56 AM
The ships are really only getting a functional paint job.  I’d LOVE to have the patience and skills to actually rig them for sails, but in this state, they are I suspect easier for game play and easier to store in my limited space!

Once I get the boats done though, I want to revisit the port.  I have been dreaming up ideas for such things as fishing nets involving gauze bandage and fishing split shot weights among other ideas I have to make the dock side look busy.

The other thing I need to get my hands on, is a 6 x 4 ocean game mat (the one I have is only 4 x 4) and I’d like one with a beach too.   I quite like the idea though of making a few small desert islands as well.

My sea matt is from Dunhelm.  They do a nice line in
'leatherette' type material. It comes in several colours
& a nice sea blue is one of them. The rolls are about
4' wide & they sell it by the meter.

To be honest, it’s a project I’ve put on the back burner for far too long myself.   Pirates are easy and fun to paint, especially as they are all different in appearance, have no sense of colour coordination, and you can play with a handful of them!

My biggest headache, is we rattled off nearly a dozen different rule sets we all seem to have dotted about so need to figure out what is best.   FFoL is ok, if a little basic.

Anyway, more models on my paint tray for the weekend……hopping to paint Hook, Smee and Wendy…..

So now I have three ships painted.   I need to paint up some guns for two of them and I will be adding a painted scene to the back of the small boat in time.

Now that the project has a little impetus, time to get a few more minis painted before turning my attention to the port….talking of hitch…just seen the rather nice Black Tree design treasure island pirates.   Must get those on my xmas list,  anyone painted them?  How do they match up with say Black Scorpion?

If you haven't, remember I have lots.

I have enough guns for these three cheers Pete, just need to paint them.

I do need to get (or cast) some canon barrels though as I have a few sub deck gun ports that need filling.

If you have any spare, I may may trade a few for the port defences….

A view from the paint table….

Started on the missing guns.   Also I fixed the jolly boats (tiller handles had snapped off two of them) and started painting.   The first civilians for Puerto Venganza….the Governor, his wife and daughter, a pair of merchants and a classy broad.

I have a few bits on order..
Gibbet and a pair of Black Tree pirates
A pack of treasure chests
Gaming mat
A pack of Galloping Major sailors
Ratnik Civilians / merchants

I still have a handful of pirates to paint, including gun crews,  along with a couple of packs of Black Scorpion marines.

I need to start painting the buildings, and a lot of dockside cargo / supplies to make it “lived in”.

Should look nice and colourful.

All the canons I have are now painted.  I still need some canon barrels for a few chaser ports but for now, all gunned up.

Total guns per ship (including a howitzer on each of the two larger ships, and all chaser ports.

Man o War 27 guns
Merchantman 9 guns
Sloop 6 guns

I have a batch of swivel guns to add yet too….

Beach looks great.
If you're looking for ideas of what to play on it:-
A fallen Statue of Liberty, one bloke & a girl on a horse chased by Apes;
Smugglers, including Dr Syn , his-self, pretending to be a scare-crow;
Japanese landing craft, & team, trying to take out a Coast Watcher;
Zombies walking out of the surf (top halves based on clear disks);
British WW1 landing in East Africa & encountering killer bees.
I'm sure others can come up with more ideas.

Oh, in that case:-
Treasure to be buried, but who is to get back to the ship?

Following the treasure map to dig it up. many needed to
dig it up, though fewer sharing, the better.

Boats are beached, waiting for those sent to collect food & water
(but nothing else) to return, then around the corner they come running
pursued by a gigantic statue of a Greek warrior... sorry drifting off
again.

Possible scenarios.
Two pirate bands attempt to loot treasure from a native shrine. Natives not too happy.
Prisoner being escorted by the Navy to or from a boat with his pirate crew trying to rescue him
Important person being intercepted  by pirates
Raid on a coastal settlement
Pirates attempting to capture a moored ship

For your natives… metal only or is plastic an option? How “Hollywood” are you willing to go?

For example, in plastic you can get North Star Osprey Ghost Archipelago Tribals, Perry Mahdist Ansar/Zulus, Warlord Games Natal & Zulus. Then Kitbash to your preferences.

Or for metal you could consider Firelock Games Natives from their Blood & Plunder game.

Great suggestions Grumpy!

I looked at the Perry…but not Hollywood enough…..however the ghost archipelago are tempting.  I will take another look at the B&P though didn’t really catch my attention first time around.

I quite like the Pulp miniatures natives too….

B&P Natives have not really grabbed me either. Even the new plastic ones in their latest Kickstarter.

Pulp natives are a way to go, I should have thought of those.

Depending on how Hollywood you want to go you might consider Empress Maori.

An eleven year project and counting!  Gives me hope for some of my own stalled projects.   lol

Love seeing your jungle trees in a game.

Now, for some of those suggested scenarios you are going to need some human skeletons lying about, some 'well-connected' and others 'discombobulated'.  And maybe a dog's skeleton, too?  How else will you be accounting for fewer pirates returning to the boats than landed when the treasure got buried?  The poor dog?  Got shot when about to warn someone of their pending demises, of course.  (Not sure if Alternative Armies have your scale for the 'boneyard' but might give them a peruse.)

Perhaps, if you want to extend the coastline, you can consider adding a cliff with a pirate's cave - the cliff can be fairly thin and not too tall jus tall enough with the cave accessible from the rear as well as the front so it can be more playable - maybe?   Though how you can account for the rising and falling tides in the cave is a problem for you to sort out!

I really need to return to finishing my own pirate project, not quite as old as yours - I didn't start until 2011.  :D  I will absolutely be stealing the seaweed and starfish idea when I get back to working on my port.

Warlord Games (formerly Wargames Factory) plastic multipart skeletons are great for corpse skeletons, not just the intended marching around skeleton. Not to hard to repose them in various characterful positions strewn about the island.
Title: Re: Welcome ye to the Spanish Main!
Post by: Digits on October 30, 2021, 04:18:20 PM
Skeletons I can do I reckon….but “extend” the coastline?   Lol….I wish I had that much gaming space!      Anyway….caves is for smugglers see…not pirates! Then again…..they do crop up in just about every pirate film and I am going Hollywood here……

Meanwhile, I’ve been adding shutters (that are I’ll fitting! ) to my old tabletop world buildings.   Going to slowly get these finished then I can return to the port…

So, I dug these two sorry looking boards from my garage.   The big move down here to sunny Stratford was not kind on them as you can plainly see 😢🥴

Dusty, a few chips in the walls and a couple of missing wall posts.

It’s been putting me off finishing it for the last three years, that and the though of expanding it.

Well, truth be told, I’m thinking I’m hardly likely to play much with it until I meet a few more local gamers, so I’m thinking I may just stick to these two boards for now, giving me a nice compact little gaming space to chuck a few minis around on.  The playing surface area clearly gets bigger when the ships are all put in dock….

But it’s going to need love.   So today I bought some new paint for the sea (couldn’t find the old stuff, so trying a different approach with some turquoise paint….and a can of Yacht varnish to finish it to take care of the water areas.

Before I can start adding paint, there is dusting to be done, along with replacing those missing wall posts.   Me thinks I need to make a few more rope fenders too for the stone jetty posts.

Then we can start thinking about the buildings.  One thing I have been doing over the years, is collecting dock side cargo and merchant paraphernalia, all of which will need painting up.

It won’t be huge, but it could be a fun table.  If I can just finish these two boards, and get use from it, then I may consider building two more to place behind them…….we shall see……..

Let’s just say I don’t intend starting any “new” projects for a while.  I want to get a few projects over the line that have been going for a while now.   This is one of the oldest and in theory, seeing as I have all the models for it, one of the easiest to do.

First sea colour paint went on last night….

I have found over the years, OK decades :-[, that getting something onto the table
and used in a game or two, is the best way to encourage a bit more progress.
The death of projects has been (see wot I dun there  :D) not playing with 'the
project' until it was fully finished. Which normally resulted in giving up on it before
any gaming occurred.

Yup, that’s my thinking fella.    I have too many projects and not enough gaming time to be fair.

I play a bit of CoC with Jamie but I need to start playing with a few other toys.  When I get the pirate table done, we will have to fix up a game or two on it Pete.

Yup, we’ll start with that…..I already have all the fighting minis we need for a piratical falling out!

I’m going to paint some civilians too.  Table already looking better.  I’ve fixed the missing posts, made the missing fenders and touched up the damaged walling.    Going to touch up the paint around the base of the wall and paint the fenders today.  Pic later.

Hopefully the yacht varnish turns up tomorrow, so will add that to finish the sea, then it’s on with the buildings.

Fenders painted and in position.  Got the idea from ones I’ve seen on barging holidays.

Can’t seem to shift the brush marks from the “water” so hoping the varnish will help with that.   Going to just tart up the bottoms of the walls and posts first.

Also, I mentioned I have lots of dockside cargo, barrels boxes etc…..but I found these on ebay, perfect for adding a little fishing flavour to the quayside too, so ordered a couple of sets.

What I am after though, is some suitable netting to make fishing nets from.    Going to have red clear plastic floats around the edges of the nets (beads) but I’m struggling to find suitable scale netting.   Mostly all 8 can get is plastics / nylon but it isn’t flexible enough……any ideas guys?

Hi Digits, the harbour is coming along very nicely 👍.

Re. nets.  Not tried this but two things spring to mind.  The first is what ever the WW2 gang use for camouflage netting on their tanks.  Second is to get some material used for mosquito nets.

I looked as mosquito netting but it was a bit fine.  I have come across some slightly bigger hole mesh for insect nearing….in metal.   That may do it.  I’m tempted to get it so I can do some ww2 mesh fencing too.   Was hoping for something more “cotton” like in texture though.  Cheers

Just to see what kind of playing surface I’d get, here with boats on it….

Cheers guys.   Best not disappoint then!

Ok, so only taken a few years… it paint is finally going onto the buildings.   Not a lot yet but it
Still happening.

And I’ve also made a start painting up a bit of clutter, including, following a productive visit to my mother, a very prolific hobbyist, I have netting and beads to do some fishing netting!

And the varnishing has happened on the water surface…but that’s drying in my garage for the next 24 hours or more yet.

Maybe not a lot of paint yet but progress is progress.

And I must confess to a certain sense of relief at this and your other threads.  I, too, have so many projects that I have been working on for a long time that sometimes 'boil up to the surface' and get worked on and then settle back towards the unseen bottom of the cauldron until they rise again.

Nice looking clutter - and your mother saved you that trip for the fishnet hose!  Good on her - and keep you out of trouble with the missus, too.   lol
