Probably the first question that needs to be answered is: “Why a 2nd edition?”
I wrote the original .45 Adventure rules over 5 years ago and in that time we have released 6 supplements as well as some things appearing in our Thrilling Expeditions books. That has meant a lot of rules spread out in several places and in some cases rules that could conflict with one another.
With that in mind, I set about putting a second edition together. But I ran into a problem fairly early on. It seems that the fixes to the rules confusion were creating far more complexity than then they were alleviating.
After some intense discussion, I decided to build second edition from scratch rather than create a hodge-podge of rules fixes compiled in one book. Most of those things that made .45 Adventure what it is, will remain and some things, that had gotten needlessly complex, have been removed or changed.
So, what will you get with this new edition?
• A revised combat system that should be simpler to remember with all the various modifiers altered. No more -2 this or -5 that. There will still be modifiers, but they will be easier to remember. The system is subtle but still requires some thought when playing.
• The three Grades from the original rulebook will remain, but the Grade 1s have been downsized so that players can use them as singles in small games or as squads in larger games. And all the archetypes will get cleaned up and re-balanced with the new rules.
• All the rules for super science, military forces and horror (yes you heard that right, HORROR) will be in one book. Now your mad genius can battle your evil cult with robots and tentacled beasts slugging it out.
• And for those who HATE having to come up with scenarios, we’ll have a random scenario generator that gives you setting, goal, Encounters, and special rules. All you have to do is bring the heroes and villains and you’re ready to go.
• Finally, the best part of all, none of your miniatures will become obsolete, they will all still be useable with the new system.
As we did with the first book release, there will be a demo version of the rules made available about a month before the release date. Those people lucky enough to play in our demo games at Historicon (or who make it to the test games we run at Maplewood Hobby in NJ) will get some stuff early as we hand out beta versions of the Quick Reference Sheets.
The book will be released right before Christmas this year. Whoa! That’s 5 months away! I know, I wanted to make sure word got out as I will be taking the PDFs and books for 1st edition down from the web store immediately because I don’t want people to buy the old rules and then feel cheated when they discover that a new edition is coming out (though if you want to snag copies of the 1st edition books, we still have some hard copies available and PDFs are always available).
This new edition will not affect the other games that use the current 1st edition system. Only .45 Adventure, Dragon Bones, Amazing War Stories, The Gargoyle: Death Soldiers of the Jade Hood, and Super Science Tales will be removed. Their contents will be combined into one single 2nd edition volume.
Be sure to head over to The Speakeasy forum as I will be discussing new things for the rules there and providing early looks at some of the changes.

Thats something to look forward too.
:)
-
Well, that explains why I couldn't buy the rules last night.
It's not good, I wanted the rules for a game Saturday. I guess I need to find something else.
Good to know what happened though.
-
Well, that explains why I couldn't buy the rules last night.

If anyone wants any of the 1st edition titles, they should email me. I'll be discounting all of them for people interested in filling in their first edition collection.
-
Oh yes...definitely a must buy. Can't wait to see this one released 8)
-
One set of rules I don't mind seeing reissued, considering the huge number of add-ons. Well done! :o
-
Well I'm glad I came here to have a look see as I was finally thinking about taking the plunge into .45 as a flexible ruleset for everything from pulp to dark/dystopian scifi.
A second edition which has the core and campaign/experience rules all together is exactly what I was looking for as I was a bit unsure about what books would be best for me to get, I loved the look of them all but could only afford 2-3 at most.
The only slightly sad thing is having to wait till December as I really wanted to get into it now after finally convincing myself to stop procrastinating.
::)
Oh well I guess I can work on getting some models and scenery together over the next few months.
:)
-
This is good news, I must admit that Dave and myself have gone over to using Astounding Tales for most of our Pulp games because of how complex and difficult to remember .45 had become.
Although I like AT I really do prefer the more structured approach of .45, and so look forward to the release of version two which will definately be on my Christmas list.
-
Phil: You will definitely like the ease of the new combat rules. I will be posting them up for comment after Historicon over on the Speakeasy forum and here in the .45 Adventure section of the LAF.
Viper: get those models painted and scenery started. I'll be posting bits and pieces but within a month or two, you should be able to start trying out some of the rules.
-
Are all the current archetypes released going to be included in the new book? Or are there planned expansions as per the current sets.
Any new archetypes planned?
Looking forward to it, guess I'll have to hold off planning next years games till I see the new rules.
Still got games planned in Aug so I'll give the old ones a good send off.
Exiciting news.

I have bought all your .45 books other than the last TEQ, so I'm not overjoyed to hear that my investment in your rules over the years is to be rewarded by you no longer supporting them. It would be a different matter if it was simply a clean up of your rules, and that the supplements could still be used, but to drop the whole lot is very disappointing. :(
-
Ah! But all the supplements will be in one book now. So even if I was cleaning up the rules only and you wanted that, you would be getting the same value.
I am trying to make it as painless as possible and I know I will not make everyone happy, but I hope I am doing what is best for the game going forward. You will not need to buy all new supplements to get the same thing you currently have.
And I plan to include many of the archetypes that are currently available and there will definitely be new ones. The addition of horror alone opens up a slew of additions.
-
Yeah, I was a little disappointed as I had picked up .45 within the last few months. But as I was waiting for the horror and considering some of the others supplements I think this is actually a good thing. Anything that keeps the stack of books to minimum is a good thing. Congratulations on being able to watch your baby grow and mature.
-
these are great news indeed! sounds really great, i was considering to buy .45 and that second edition sounds like the final reason to buy it.
Do you plan some pre-order deal or a blundle release deal?
-
Cool. I had purchased a copy of .45 Adventure about 2 years ago, but could never get anyone interested in playing it. I guess I will have to pick up a copy of the new book when it comes out. ;)
-
This is great news! Doing a bunch of new characters a few weeks ago involved flipping through three binders, some random paper, and a lot of muttering of, "Which damn book was that character type in again?".
One volume and some streamlining is exactly what 45A needs.
While you're at it, steal some of Astounding Tales! skills, especially the Good Girl/Bad Girl female skills, they make for fun pulpy female characters! Howard freely admits to cribbing from 45A for chunks of the recent 2nd ed of AT!, so turnabout is surely fair play! lol
-
Adding a bunch of new skills. I'm excited about a couple of them. Also, Grade 3 models will have the ability to take Heroic Abilities which go above and beyond normal Special Abilities.
Some time this week, I will be posting some of the quick combat rules along with some characters from the demo games so people can try things out and leave their comments.
-

That sounds like it will be a great addition! It will certainly separate the heroes from the lower grades!
In fact everything you seems to have teased us with (quicker combat, lower G1's) can only help improve the game!
I can't wait until December - but in the mean time can we still expect a the next issue of TEQ soon?
-
Can't wait for it!
I cannot express enough how much .45 has opened my eyes to tabletop gaming. 2nd ed is bound to be great.
-
I am back from a GLAM weekend, at the Profs house in south germany, and what happend here in the forum !!
Oh dear now I know that, I cant´t live without the new rules. (realy seriously)
quetion
did you make a faster gameplay for the initiative ?
will the TEQ sets still usable ?
good to hear thet horror is in the new book.
Grimm
-
Good news Rich
Like so many others I find it a bit of a hassle going from one set to another looking for a rule or character that I know is in there somewhere.
Just a thought - any chance of some more pulp-type characters from across the other side of the pond, eg the good ol' English Bobby armed with his trusty truncheon and whistle and little Belgian detectives?
-
Grimm: I am not changing the initiative system, however, it should move faster as Grade 1 squads activate together. At the convention this weekend I had each player with a Grade 3 and 3-4 Grade 1s. And, with teaching the rules and playing the game, the players were able to cover 3 levels of the museum and defeat the Hybrid High Priest and prevent the world from ending.
The Grade 1s all activating together as a unit at the end of the turn, meant that players were able to keep things moving along swiftly.
-
Need to add this to my Xmas list
Will be good to have all the rules in one place.
Keep up the good work Richard.
-
I'm trying GM. :D
And if you are interested in seeing some of the changes, check out the Speakeasy forum where I have begun detailing some of them. So far I have covered combat and Hero Points.
-
Christmas?! I can't wait that long!!!! >:( >:(
-
Nor can I - oh well, with all the other stuff I've got to do they'll be out soon enough to put on the Pacific Island scenario I've been working on for some time in our 2011 games schedule.
-
I hate making people wait, but I really think it will be worth it. The rules are going to be tighter and cleaner and it should make for some great games.
And if you have specific questions, feel free to ask away. I'm happy to share what I can.
-
Just saw the Action Preview on the Speakeasy and have a question about the jump action.
http://www.rattrapproductions.com/speakeasy/viewtopic.php?t=2338 (http://www.rattrapproductions.com/speakeasy/viewtopic.php?t=2338)
Say a character has a SPD of 5. Would he move 0" - 2.5" then jump equal to his Brawn or does he have to move 2.5 - 5" in order to jump the full brawn distance.
-
Good question.
The model has to move a Min. of 1" but no more than half its move. So a model with a Speed 5 would have to move between 1" and 2.5" in order to jump it's Brawn score.
-
Okay, thanks. I guess I was thinking the intent was to move at least half but it seems pretty much as written. Sorry to second-guess. :D
-
One question that I thought of after looking at some of your postings, Rich is...
Do you think the 2nd Ed. will make .45 more or less compatible with FW and others?
In reality, there aren't too many differences, but sometimes things like weapons, Grade Levels (G1/2 for instance) and some abilities are different enough between the two to cause some fiddling or thought in order to make sense.
Will it now be easier to cross elements over?
-
The rules between the systems will be different for now. Eventually, however, it will be easier to cross over between them. Marc has already begun scribbling some ideas for crossing FW archetypes to .45 Adventure 2nd.
-
I do kinda feel broadsword is a bit of the redheaded stepchild of the range, well that's a little unfair but it doesn't seem quite as popular as FW.
Then again magic/rituals/powers and a creature builder would easily slide into the horror section so all that would really be needed would be some historical archetypes and weapons for time traveling pulp adventure.
That would give everything that would be needed for fantasy, and open up the crossdimentional/timetravel aspects fairly easily.
-
I think Broadsword will slip easier into use than Fantastic Worlds with the new system. The simple reason that most of the fantasy type elements will fit horror and close combat will be covered. Fantastic Worlds science is more stable than pulp science and so will be a bit tougher to balance right.

And see, I am more of a fantasy over sci fi gamer (though 20s/30s adventures still reside at the top for me). I think Broadsword is the tightest of the current rule sets since it had the benefit of all the others before it. But fantasy is a tougher nut to crack with players for some reason. I guess if there was someone besides me promoting it online, it might get more play. Fantastic Worlds has the benefit of Marc and Froggy talking it up.
Such is the life of a small publisher. Too many games, not enough time. :D

That's sorta the life us players have...but we pay to play, you get paid because we play :)

Every game system needs a Froggy....

And there I was just wondering the other night, why all had been quiet on this front for quite a while!
We'll be all settled in with lots of space for gaming when this comes out :D
-
I have been having a break from painting and catching up with developements on the 2nd Ed over on the Speakeasy
http://www.rattrapproductions.com/speakeasy/index.php
I must say things are looking mighty impressive, I foresee a return of Pulp action to OHQ in the new year.
Must get back to work.
-
Thanks Phil. I'll have you know that I am having lots of fun working on it as well. :)
-
Hey guys, has 2nd edition been published?
-
Not yet. But we're not in December yet. :)
-
Not yet. But we're not in December yet. :)
Birthday money has been put to one side ready ;)
-
Not yet. But we're not in December yet. :)
Sorry if I'm asking something already said, do you have a specific release date?
-
I am not tying to a specific release date because a lot depends on the printer. Delays could push things around and I don't want to commit to a certain day.
-

Specifics? He took it down from 365 days to knowing it will be one of 31 days. :-)
Grimm
-
Less than 31, he'll hardly publish on Christmas Day, even wargame magnates get to take one day off............. :D
-
We get days off? Why does no one ever tell me these things! lol
-
So, starting December 1st, we're allowed to post at least once a day to this thread with "Is it released yet? No? How about now? Tomorrow? This afternoon? Are we there yet?" etc, right?
:D
-
Sounds good to me Wirelizard.
:D
-
Will it be out tomorrow? No pressure............ :D
-
Hey, its already 1 December out here in the far Pacific, so................ lol
-
December is nearly 1/3rd over, is it out yet?
No?
How about now?
:D

And we were all doing so well resisting the temptation to ask every day...
:?
...now?
-
How about now?
Any updates?
;)
-
And what about now on the 11th?
lol
-
If we keep this up, children, he will come and tell us off........... :o
-
Yup, just what we are hoping :D
-
Not working, though............. :'(
-
Maybe he's panicing and working really hard to try and get it finished because now he's created unfair holiday expectations in us.
That said I am fully aware there is no chance I will be able to order it and have it delivered to Scotland before probably the middle of January even released riiiiight ... now.
...now?
-
Patience children, all comes.......................
-
Do you know something that we don't, Phil? :-[
-
Is today the day?
-
........pretty please.......... ::)

Do you know something that we don't, Phil? :-[
Just wise words from an old man ;)

Just wise words from an old man
Was that David lol?
-
Only a few days left now................... ???
-
IMHO (and with the most friendly feeling I'm able to express with my poor english) ;) I think would be better to don't press Operator5 and let him finish their job properly, personally I would like to see this new edition asap, but I prefer to wait for something really well finished than a "run-for-the-deadline" product.
I'm sure he is the one most excited/interested/stressed for the release of the new edition
-
I think he knows we are all joking............ lol
-
Certainly we haven't broken out the pitchforks and torches...
...yet...
Sooo...
Now?
:)

We're all waiiiitiiiing... ;D
Happy Holydays to you all!
Best wishes.

LOL now you know Richard is done with the rules right and just having fun at all our expense? LOL
He is just going to use a mobile device and post just before the ball drops that the new rules are done and available. :-)

-
Out tomorrow, then? :o

22 hours left of December and the year left here... fewer than that in Rattrap Standard Time...
Cue the slow, suspenseful music...
:D

Today's the day...................... :'(

:P

From the Speakeasy forums:
As many probably now suspect, .45 Adventure 2nd edition will not make it out this month. I wish I could give you some big reason, but mostly the mundane things of everyday took up too much time. So, 2nd edition will be out in January. I hope everyone enjoys their New Year celebrations. And look on the bright side, I have given everyone something to look forward to in 2011.

Well, this month, then........... :'(

Well, this month, then........... :'(
We wouldn't have got it till this month anyway ;)

Aye but the counting down was fun.
Hey wait, now it's January we can start again.
....now?
:)

Well, a week in and no news............. :'(

Well, a week in and no news............. :'(
No news is good news, as they say ;)
-
not when you're waiting for new toys, Phil........ >:D
-
News is that things are progressing. :)
I will keep you up to date when things happen that are worth noting, but I am sure you would get quite bored with "removed a comma today" or "changed three to there". lol

Good to hear, those commas can be tricky!
-
but I am sure you would get quite bored with "removed a comma today" or "changed three to there".
Maybe, but that is better than GW and BF issuing errata days after rules are published, I suppose. 8)
Nice to know you have a group of fans, though. :-*
-
It's great to know that people are waiting for the rules. Seeing posts like these just inspire me to work harder. I guess that's why my wife tries to keep me away from the computer. lol
-
Good to hear, those commas can be tricky!
Not as dangrous as colons, though..... lol
I'll get my coat....
-

Hehehe lol Grammar jokes, just say no!
Richard, can I ask one question about 2nd Edition. Its specifically to do with ammo, IIRC you mentioned on one thread that ammo goes alot quicker. Why is this? Is it the same mechanic as before i.e. rolling a 1. Do all 1s count? so if you where rolling 4d10 and you rolled any number of ones you're ammo would be depleted by one?
Cheers
Andy
-
Andy: If I am reading what you wrote correctly, then yes.
If The Gargoyle is rolling 5d10 and gets 10, 8, 6, and 1. Then he would use the 10 for hitting but the 1 would still count for out of ammo.
-

I'd wondered about that, in our two small playtest games.
Ammo reloads just got a lot more important!
-
As it should be really ... of course if you are wanting a bit more of the cinematic nearly never ending ammo way of things it isn't hard to tweak the rules, but I like the idea of getting to that stage where your character is worrying if taking a shot is worth the risk or if they should wait for an easier one.
:)
-
I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kinda lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?
Rolls a 1............... :-[
-
Awww... come on... must be out soon :(
Feels like I've been waiting forever....
Any news? Anybody?
-
We're nearly run clean out of all that January now. :o
-
While i am anxious for the 2nd ed rules. i am more than happy to wait and make sure they are perfected. i must admit i was a bit disapointed with the editing in the Atomic Cafe book. :-X
So keep working, get it together, and make sure you do another special edition mini laminated book like you had for 1st ed.
Cause i want it !
-
Totally agreed, all joking aside it is better that a few extra months are being taken to get it really up to what those making it want to be.
Especially when you are working with a second edition and a product which is hopefully going to be a cornerstone for many years to come.
So with that sensible stuff is out of the way.
...how about now?
:)
-
Any updates?
-
Played the upcoming edition rules at Historicon, and found them really great. I've been waiting eagerly for about seven months since, ready to buy.
-
Then, I hope that it is just a short time to see it ;)
-
I am not going to give a firm date as every time I do, something happens to derail the work.
BUT... the Cold Wars convention is coming up and I am pushing hard to have books ready for it.
-
11-3-11? :o
-
Excellent, out by mid-March should give me a chance to get my paws on a copy in time for Trumpeters Salute in Vancouver 1st of April! Hopefully in time to adapt the Amulet of Fire scenario to 2nd Ed, too.
-
11-3-11? :o
I reeeeeaaaaallyy hope that is March 11th and not November 3rd. >:D
-
Silly americans not being able to read dates propperly.
;)
With the 11th being my Birthday I hope it is around then, would be nice.

so 2000% sure will be available at London Salute?
As soon as the book is in, copies will be on their way to Northstar. Nick should have them for Salute.
-
Sadly it is cheaper for me to wait and get the book shipped over than it is for me to get down to London.
:?
Still, wonderful news.
:D
-
As soon as the book is in, copies will be on their way to Northstar. Nick should have them for Salute.
Even grander news, may be over Nick's way before Salute if he has them. :D
-
The initial run of the printed book is now on its way to me. It should arrive Thursday and I will pick the copies up to bring to Cold Wars in Lancaster, PA. I probably won't list it on the website for a few more days after that as I am only getting a VERY limited number of copies for the show.
Brigade Games will have the copies in their booth along with packs of our old and new miniatures.
If you absolutely have to have this at Cold Wars, I would hit Lon early on Friday. I'm not saying this is going to be a hot commodity, but only that supply is limited at the show.
I apologize to those who cannot make Cold Wars having to wait. I promise to get them up on the website as soon as I know when I will receive the remainder of the copies.
-
Still great news even for those of us who can't get there to get the very first ones.
:)
-
Will a smaller, laminated and bound copy be available again?
and i know there was talk about a hard cover, is that still on the horizon ?
-
Just put my order in on the Blackmarket for the book.
*happy dance*

will northstar have any for salute?
-
They will probably not make it to Northstar in time for Salute. I will try, but it does not look likely.
-
Bought this weekend, now I'm waiting for the cards to become available Rich ;)
-
Sorry in advance, if this has been asked before or on other forums. I'm wondering if the Gloire and BA rules will be updated as well. With interest concentrated on Swashbuckling and Fantasy style games I would buy the .45 book just for adapting the derived rule sets. So just for that, is it worth the investment?
-
The .45 Adventure 2nd edition will easily work with both Swashbuckling and Fantasy (in fact I have done a couple of Broadsword games using it already).
Just be sure to download the newest Special Abilities list from the Speakeasy forum as I have added some abilities more suited to those genres.
You will need to generate your own archetypes, but with the formula in the book, it will only be a matter of plugging in the correct numbers. I showed one that I did on the Broadsword Adventures forum of the Speakeasy.

Now available as a PDF for $17.50, less than £11 with the $ as it is............... :o
