Title: Images of German captured FT-17s?
Post by: Doc Twilight on July 19, 2010, 10:31:28 AM
Hello, everyone.

I've been trying (in vain) to find a good (or at least marginal) photo of a German FT-17 Beutepanzer. I have seen several references, and one image of an FT-17 "in the distance" while the focus of the photograph is on another vehicle, however, I can't seem to find any images of German captured FT-17s themselves; when I do searches for them on the web or in the library, I inevitably come up with images of German ft-17s captured at the beginning of the Second World War, which does me little good. Doesn't need to be perfect. Just something to provide inspiration for painting.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Doc

What are your references? The Osprey on German tanks says they didn't use the ones they captured, just sent them back for testing and decided they didn't want them. Same thing for the Whippets. They wanted massive gun-armed land behemoths, not dainty little things that could move at a fast walking pace and only had a machine gun.  :)

Maybe that's why you are having a hard time finding a photo?

I have this, but I am fairly certain that is the original French camo scheme:

Hey, Plynkes -

You're probably right. I haven't been able to get my hands on the Osprey, which is part of my dilemma. It has been theorized on the Landships forum (ok, internet source, granted, not exactly primary source stuff, but a decent place for info from time to time) that they may have actually used a handful (as with the Schneider) as local captures/conversions. I suppose I could hedge my bets and paint the model rather simply (again, per the Schneider) in a basic field green without any fancy markings, or leave it in French colors and slap on a cross. Of course, I could just give the FT-17 to one of my opponents and go for something else, anyway.

Edit:

Just saw the image you posted, Plynk. Looks like it is in the French scheme. Good place to start. Thanks!

Joroas -

Thanks much for the link:) Unfortunately, that one is in WW2 markings.

If it was done on an ad-hoc basis like that, I guess the numbers are going to be small enough that a chance of a photo cropping up will be pretty slim. At least without any pictorial evidence nobody can say you've painted it wrong.  Every cloud has a silver lining, as they say...  :)
