I know, I know! I said I was going to build an opium den or a bank but I need some lower class terraced housing first. As I haven't got much time it needed to be a quick build which isn't hard bearing in mind some of the horrific standards of housing the Victorians churned out for the working classes before building regulations kicked in.
Anyway, I set myself a challenge that whatever I built had to be done within ten hours. Luckily the design of some working class housing is easy to follow as its relatively square and this pic is sort of what I'm attempting to achieve:

Eight hours in and I'm not doing too bad. The terrace will be in three parts for easy storage and this is the first section (the other two will be identical bar a small shop on one corner):

It's hard to find images of the roofing so thanks to Malamute for his advice. As for the backs, Google Earth was my friend.

I'll be putting a back wall and gate in when the main building is painted. There's also a bit more drainpipe action to finish off. I've used my usual method for the build,: emossed styrene on foam board. As with the other builds the windows are from Grandt Line. Usually I adopt the Gamer mac/Overlord style of tiling using cardboard but on this occasion I've used the tile sheets sold by Brandlin.
I'll get it painted over the next few days but I think I'm not going to achieve my ten hour deadline, especially as I've got two more of these to make! Hey ho.

Looking fantastic.

Cracking work again Neil. Eight hours for that isn`t bad at all :)
One thing I would suggest is to try and get a key stone on all the arches, it`ll just add that little bit more.
cheers
James

I suspect they'll be brick arches, which means no keystone. Labourers houses didn't get fancy stonework :)
-
Why rush? Forget the self imposed deadlines.
Another lovely build, its going to be one hell of a layout when you are done.
-
Thanks chaps. :) Comments and feedback are very much appreciated.
The museum I volunteer at has a massive archive of contemporary photographs of working class housing in the East End. Some of them have brick arches, some are just stonework (maybe plastered over the bricks?) and for the sake of this build I'm going for stonework (it's quicker ;)). Rest assured I will use brick arches on other builds in the name of authenticity. I might take up Jimbibs advice and stick a keystone on them but as Dewbakuk has pointed out I dont want them looking too flash, I'll have a play and let you know.

very nice
"It's hard to find images of the roofing so thanks to Malamute for his advice. As for the backs, Google Earth was my friend. "
well, the shitter has to be somewhere, right?

Another lovely one Neil :-* :-* :-*
When can we get a group shot ???
-
Stonking. Well done that VSF gamer from Shropshire.
-
Lovely stuff - very nice build, and you capture the tenement look perfectly. Plus, more Grandt line windows! Pappa Midnight has recommended them as well, so with this double endorsement, it's off to order some!

Good to see my stuff being used - hope it worked out ok. I like the way you have modelled slipped and missing tiles by cutting out occasional tiles from the strips.
how did you do the capping strips?
-
Nice work TC. Looking forward in seeing the completed building.

Those hovels are worth a fortune these days - look at the resurgence of Hackney for example. Don't make them too realistic Mr T, you'll get squatters moving in.
-
Thanks again for the feedback :).
how did you do the capping strips?
The caps are scored strips of styrene. I tried to be clever and bend them into a V shape but they snapped everytime so I left them in two pieces.
When can we get a group shot ???
I promise, promise, promise that when I've finished this set of terraces I'll sort a group shot. May this forum be my witness. :)

Yeah that's the problem I was having trying to design some - best approach I have come up with is to do the top layer in single shingles (cut from a strip of slates), and then in the slight V that you get between the two upper rows glue a length of around 1-1.5mm diameter styrene rod. Paint the rod and the upper rows of slates a terracotta colour and the rest of the slates gray and they will look like clay ridge tiles...

Very nice indeed!!! :-*
I especially like the roof set-up as I've been planning to do a similar style roof on some future buildings. It's nice to see an example ( saves leg-work!!).
Amazing how many of those "slums" fetch such good prices today.......
Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

I'm at the halfway mark with one half of the terrace pretty much finished. Just the road sign to add. I'll start work on the next half tomorrow.
The first thing I will say the pics are a bit rushed as The Sticky Fingered One was about to get home from nursery. Apologies.

In the next pics I've shown it alongside some of my other recent builds. I didn't have time to include all the buildings but it gives you an idea of where I'm going with the project. Again, as I was rushed the layout is a bit crap (the roads and pavements aren't finished yet and dont quite align - all in good time though :)). I'll get some more pics uploaded soon.

You put yourself down to much.
Stunning work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Very atmospheric.
Roads and pavements are very nice as well. Where did you get the roads?
-
Amazing! :-*

So what? You made a couple of giant Vallejo paint pots and a ruler then photographed them in your street? I suppose that's quite clever but is it wargaming?

Great set-up. Mrs Dewbakuk said that in the above shot, the only thing that told her it was a model was the small bottle of paint in the corner. Gotta be praise worthy :)
-
neil, this is simply a masterpiece! :-* :-* :-*
congrats!
more please!
-
Holy Crap but that looks good!
I really need to get to work. Between you and PM there's like a carpet of un-retrieved gauntlets on my floor.
-
Wow, looking superb, I had forgotten you had made that many, they look wonderful in the group shot. keep going its going to be a very, very impressive table ;D :-* :)
-
Wow!!!
-
Fantastic! It already looked great as a standalone piece, but alongside the rest of it....simply amazing!
-
Love it!!!

Thanks all very much for the positive comments, high praise indeed if Mrs Dewbakuk has approved too ;). I've got more bits painted up, just need to get it all together for a pic.

lol I should have posted the pic with the giant hand too.

The roads are embossed wallpaper (from Homebase) mounted on strips cut from cork tiles. Not exactly durable but with a bit of care they should see me through a good few games. They literally take minutes to knock together. The cork has the potential to warp so if you give it a go keep the lengths fairly short and it'll be fine.

Dont rush, you make my work look bad ;)

Add a giant hedgehog and go for the full Monty Python nod, I say.
Bloody marvellous. I can just see Martian tripods plodding along the pavement and pulverising pastry purveyors in a painful phashion.
-
Excellent stuff old chap!!!! :-*
They look awesome when they are set-up together.
I've had a little set-back with "warping MDF" when i was doing my baseboard. I may have to blag your idea and do smaller sections....

Wow, this really is wonderful stuff. I ddn't check the thread for a couple of days and you've gone from a pair of houses to a whole new suburb! That's even faster than the Victorians built them!
:-*
-
Marvellous work! :-* I must get started on buildings for my Holmes project, soonish. Thank goodness we non-modellers can fall back on the Outpost buildings!

Effing brilliant mate.

Ah, yes, kids... How dear they are to us right? Young Fivers, son of Hammers, aged 2,5 years, is taking an increasing interest in The Hobby and now has a few items on the shelf. Two horse, one purple and one Preussian blue, and a Vendel mastiff, also blue. He often comes scrambling when I sit down for a session but I have implemented a somewhat more restrictive participation policy since the Incident with the Blue Thumbprints on a batch of Pathans which were supposed to wear shiny whites.
