Well, aren't they rather nice :-* :-*
The two companies seem to match rather well don't they. Are you going to build a Nautilis aswell ;)
cheers

White equipment!
Nice touch!
Super minis!
-
Ooooooh nice! You've done a great job with the whites.
-
That has just spoilt one of my ideas. :'(
I already bought a Nemo figure from Ironclad
And I was going to buy these exact figures for his crew.
But I was going to paint mine with red and white stripped tops.
I could never compete with your paint job. :'(
I have some other ideas for an army of Nemo types but no doubt you will post pictures of those as well soon
lol lol
Cracking job :-* :-* :-*

Exactly! Very impressive
-
VERY good looking white tones, something I have trouble with, what colours were used for the white shading?
-
made up white-shades I'm afraid, but the final white was VMC white :)
They may be a 'wessel' or more than likely a small landing craft.

niet, the Brigade is finished, Nemo is no more :D
sorry for ruining your day ;)
thanks for the comments seamates :)
-
Awesome! Great looking figures, they do go well together.
-
Just beautiful. The whites are amazing. Now you need a proper Nautilus.
-
Excellent paintjob!
not quite my taste for Nemos Gang, but they look gorgeous.
I myself bought brigade games merchant sailors for this purpose
these are russian sailors I guess?
I already bought a Nemo figure from Ironclad
could You please divulge which one?
-
Sod doing their laundry ;)
-
Damn! Superb!
-
Excellent work.
BTW - I read 20,000 Leagues while on holiday and discovered that the clothing worn by by Nemo's crew was coloured .....
..... PURPLE! lol lol lol
-

The one at the start of this thread.

hmm, interesting
must have overlooked this
You remember which chapter?
-
Should there be a "more visible" ::) Third World ;) presence in this force? 8)
Or did Nemo recruit from European Anarchists solely? :o lol
Those are good! :) I'm officially jealous. :-*
Gracias,
Glenn
-
ahhh...
it says in the books that his crew were outcasts from all over the world, not indians
besides, the group is obviously meant as generic navy, with an overall "Nemo" theme, which is a good idea
-
A gentle jest I assure you. :)
Although it would seem this particular group was recruited in Europe exclusivly. ;)
Gracias,
Glenn

You remember which chapter?
Fairly early on -I think when 'guests' are supplied new clothing in their cell. The clothing is dues using the same due that the Romans used for their purple.
-
Excellent painting! :-*

THX
interesting, my copy seems to be edited
the clothing is described as "boots of seal skin, a beret of sea otter, and cloth of a peculiar fibre (apparently from marine plants)"
it is absolutely obvious to use dye from sea snails, which produces colours from dark violet to indigo
-
Just curious about this purple detail.
I found the french version on project guttenberg, http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext04/820kc10h.htm (http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/etext04/820kc10h.htm) and fastly reading the chapter about the main characters arriving at the Nautilus, i found this describing the nemo's sailors
"Les deux inconnus, coiffés de bérets faits d'une fourrure de loutre marine, et chaussés de bottes de mer en peau de phoque, portaient des vêtements d'un tissu particulier, qui dégageaient la taille et laissaient une grande liberté de mouvements."
And this comment from Nemo to explain the purple color of the Characters clothes
" Mais cette mer, monsieur Aronnax, me dit-il, cette nourrice prodigieuse, inépuisable, elle ne me nourrit pas seulement ; elle me vêtit encore. Ces étoffes qui vous couvrent sont tissées avec le byssus de certains coquillages ; elles sont teintes avec la pourpre des anciens et nuancées de couleurs violettes que j'extrais des aplysis de la Méditerranée."
but when they got their clothes don't specifies they are the same kind of clothes used by the sailors
"Comme il disait ces mots, la porte s'ouvrit. Un stewart entra. Il nous apportait des vêtements, vestes et culottes de mer, faites d'une étoffe dont je ne reconnus pas la nature. Je me hâtai de les revêtir, et mes compagnons m'imitèrent."
So, the fact they are using the same clothes than the sailors could be a film assumption never mentioned in the book?
if that's the case the characters will be dressed in pruple clothes, but the sailors clothes color will remain undefined, simply described as a "particular kind of cloth" with seal boots and beret.
-
firstly - I was wrong about the fabric - is is made of Byssus silk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byssus
secondly, I would say all are clad in clothes dyed with murex molluscs, which give shades from dark pink over violet to indigo, and blue, depending on the species and the treatment
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_purple
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murex_trunculus
another dye obtainable from sea organisms would be sepia
the first desription focuses on the person, while the second one describes the use of maritime ressources in more detail
as a sidenote, ancient (not JV) texts that describe garment dyed with purple relate to the dye (in order to point out the wealth of the wearer) and not the colour. Only after the secret of snail purple was lost, the word "purple" was used to denote the (replacement) colour and became what we now recognize as purple.
Anyway, in a broad sense, Nemo's crew would be clad in black, grey, brownish, and purple-blue colours
or a warm golden yellow, which is the natural colour of sea-silk
Also, at the funeral described in the book, the corpse is wrapped in white cloth
does anyone have a suggestion how to paint sealskin?
-
WOW...white uniforms...such a difficult colour to paint, yet you did a great job!! What is your secret???
