Title: 28mm Mystery Machine - any idea where I can get one?
Post by: Thargor on September 22, 2010, 11:00:52 PM
As the title says, I'm looking for a van suitable for painting up as the Mystery Machine for my 28mm "not the Scooby Gang".  Anybody got any suggestions please?

Ya know.  I think I've seen one on the toy shelves lately with a Scoob and Shaggy inside.  Can't remember if it fits good with 28mm but it was definitely bigger than your typical matchbox.

Sorry, never mind.  I was mistaken.  I think it was the model kit I've seen around which is definetly too big.

Just seen a VW van in a "dollar shop" here in Australia that would have been perfect.

Warranted it was $9.95 and covered in peace symbols - it could have been easily converted.

Have u tried those sources?

This Van isnt perfect, but it works well enough.  This was for a contest on another forum a year or two ago.  I bought the van at Walmart, 1/43 scale Volkswagon.  Had screws in the bottom, which I removed so I could paint the inside and keep the clear glass, screwed it back together when done.  I think I paid 1.99?

Johnny Lightning used to make a licensed die-cast Mystery Machine in 1/64, if that works for you with 28mm.

I couldn't find one so I ended up with the Lledo hippy VW off ebay.

I have this one.  It scales up pretty good with standard 28mm.  It's not perfect, but really close.  You may not like the friction pull back mechanism.  But it's cheap as hell.

There's also the similar Burger King Toy, I don't have one so I can't say how it scales.  It's supposed to be 3 inches long:

Mine is a pullback toy, similar (if not the same) as the first one Doomsdave references above. I got two of them on ebay for around $2. Cut out the pullback mechanism, peel the stickers off the windows and do some painting and you're there. It works very well with 28mm figures and the 'cartoony' aspect of the vehicle does fit in with other vehicles surprisingly well.

Cheers guys, some great ideas here.

Doomsdave - Checking out ebay now ...
SMPress - that is very nice.
Matakishi - we have the same figures (top set)  :P and that van looks a good size for them.
Count Winsky - That's very nice too.
fsultana - bit of a way to go from the UK and how come the "dollar store" sells stuff for 9.95?
Big Sexy - thanks for the thought  lol
mpennock - thanks, will try to find one this side of the pond.
Steve F - Not heard of them before, will have to google them.

Yeah, finally found a 1:43 VW Transporter by Cararama which is just what I wanted.  It was pretty cheap too £6.90 inc postage.  It arrived today and just needs some paint to make it into the Mystery Machine.

Brilliant brushwork.  Good to see ideas like this come to fruition.  The gang looks great as well.

I stumbled across a die-cast one a few months ago.

It claims to be 1/32, but it's not. It's made by Jada Toys Inc - Amazon link (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jada-Scooby-Mystery-Machine-vehicle/dp/B08KPQMP8N/ref=sr_1_13)

I'll try to get a picture of it over the weekend next to some figures.

edited to correct spelling mistake

If you try “28mm mystery machine “ on eBay a lot will come up in various sizes and prices. I saw at least one 1/64 which might work. Crooked Dice used to make one but I don’t see it anywhere on their site. It might not hurt to contact them.

Jada stuff can be pretty good I'd consider that one.  I have a couple Batmobiles, GI Joe Vamp and Cobra Stinger.  They're packaged with larger 1/48'ish (or bigger) nano Metalfigs, but the vehicles are often slightly smaller than that and well suited for 28mm.

I'd love to see pics of it next to some figures.

Pictures as requested :)

The other vehicles are a Mantic pickup truck and a Tamiya 1/48 Japan Light Armoured Vehicle. The figures are the Hasslefree Post Apoc Scooby Gang. I am planning to buy the non-apocalypse ones, assuming the Hasslefree website ever comes back up :(

The Van has a windscreen but no side windows and is held together with screws :D (I hate rivets, it's almost like they don't want people to modify them)

Fred's head is level with the bottom of the side window, so it's definitely a climb into the van. The other dimensions are fine, and the height isn't glaring. I usually go by the seats and steering wheel and those are fine. Overall, I'd put the model at 1/43, definitely not 1/32, and fine on the table. It has the added benefit of having all the decals, which is the bit that stumped my own plans

Thanks for the picture!
Scale of a cartoon van all depends on what you think it's based on.

If it's a vintage VW or Ford Van from the 60's (most likely), then it's probably pretty accurate for 1/32.  Those vans are pretty small and this towers over 1/56 figures.

If it's a current cargo van, then it might be 1/40 or 1/36 looking at the size of the doors or as small as 1/43 based on the wheels.

Really though, it's the centerpiece for a cartoon crew and even if it's a bit "too big" I think it looks great.

There are a couple free stl versions on thingiverse if you have access to a 3d printer. They are robust models and can be printed in PLA or resin. Someone has already posted etsy link to the model by Mr Big Tong but if you want the stl you can get it from his patreon. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3412098  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2882554 https://www.patreon.com/bigmrtong/posts

Armorcast used to sell a resin one. The Clue Contraption. I have one and it is good scale. Someone also made water slide decals for it. I will try to research where I got them.

I seem to remember a plastic mystery machine full of sweets being sold in the confectionery aisles of UK supermarkets and possibly stores like B&M/Home Bargains. From memory they might have been a suitable size for 28mm. Might be worth checking out if anyone still needs one.

I think there was some unintended thread'omancy here as Thargor's original thread was from 2011.

Interesting options for the mystery machine though.
