Alright guys (and girls)? This is the first thread I've ever started on this forum. Some of you might already know me as gamer mac's brother. I've already helped him make something for LAF, but never felt I would be able to contribute enough to join your fantastic site.
Anyway after being allowed to come to blam(thanks by the way. The show was brill!) and meeting some of you great people I came away with a renewed interest in pulp and vsf stuff. I was planning to take a break after the show and not build anything(I'd been staring at the the back end of a Zeppelin for six months!). That didn't last long though!
After twiddling my thumbs for half an hour I had to start building something again...
I always liked 22,000 leagues under the sea and after seeing a mechanical fish posted on here recently i thought I would try and make my own cheaper version.
All it is, is card stock covered with glossy magazine covers. I've found that if I use a ballpoint pen I can emboss rivets and panel lines very quickly and cheaply on to my models.

-
Is it going to have tentacles?
-
Nice curves and interesting shape :-* Look forward to seeing it progress
Svennn
-
is it a fish of some sort? possibly an Angler?
-
After your last project you set the bar damn high o_o o_o Looking forward to seeing a "minor" project lol
LB
-
Its supposed to be a fish. Dont know what type. This was what I was using for inspiration
(http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv179/andym2105/cb938160.jpg)
This is roughly what I'm trying to achieve...
Again the one I had seen before is done by a talented guy called fichtenfoo. His seems to be a limited run model. So I thought I might be able to knock out a couple for an underwater game we'd like to run at some point.
-
Heck, the plans are a thing of beauty in themselves :)
-
Ah ha!
Now I understand what's going on. :)
I'm easily confused... :D
Looks like a great idea... will be watching keenly for further progress.
-
What's the other two?
-
I haven't got that far. Any suggestions?
-
tentacles!
-
Armament? Hmmm...
You could try either a variant on the US navy's Howell torpedo in use in the 1890s (http://www.hnsa.org/doc/howell/index.htm), or go more esoteric and experiment with Gamlington-Smyth's Patent Galvanic Discharge Trident (never officially used by any navy, but definately purchased in large numbers by both sides during the brief Second War between the States of 1874-5) for impaling enemy submersibles and giving them a nasty shock :D
-
tentacles!
Feelers would be better, like on a catfish :)
You've got to have electric weapons purely from the VSF impracticablitly of the idea :D
Nice idea though, looking forward to seeing it finished 8)
cheers
James
-
Its looking good already Andy. :-*
I can't wait to see it develop. I like the idea of the terror fish type craft from Stingray. There's a possible game for BLAM 2011, VSF undersea action........ ;D
-
You dont hang around do you! The conversation about it was only on Saturday night.
Looking good though.... anything can happen in the next half hour
-
VSF undersea action........ ;D
Come on, we've been discussing that for years! Of course, the Scottish lot might actually do it :D
-
The conversation on Saturday night Paul was about something a wee bit different from this. This is just a trial. I'm still not sure i can do other thing. I would need gamer mac and oldskool rebel's help again. I might post my ideas at a later date and see if anybody help.
Anyway i got a wee bit down again last night...
...now with added teeth. The bits on the side is where I plan to attach some sort of fin.
This my thinking with the weapon situation. I couldn't think how to make a decent torpedo, so I'm thinking of some sort of spear/harpoon. Steam powered of course!! Attached to the side by an arm.
-
I think I prefer the spear option as it just seems easier to travel through water than the others.
cheers
James
-
I would need gamer mac and oldskool rebel's help again.
I'm not quite sure what I done last time other than being the good looking one of the trio ::) But still I'm up for it.
I agree with Jimbibbly, the spear definitely looks the better option.
Cheers
Andy
-
How about a spar torpedo hanging over the bow like an angler fish ?
-
Ooo, that's a good idea :D
cheers
James

I found this while looking for pictures on angler fish. Now that would be a great sub! I also found this on wiki.....

I put up a piccie as notice of a toy that had gone on end-of-summer sale in the US;
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=21987.0
with the warning 'Don't tell me you look forward to updates of my work' or something like that.
Difference between Andym and myself: he has nothing interesting at the moment, but must find or make something, where as I am surrounded by interesting things, and just as I start one...
In the case of the fish, I bought several in a couple of designs, really wanted to try to get the 'eyes', to be painted as viewing ports, above water. Of course, it sticks preternaturally high, and everybody laughed. I got cold feet, and there it sits. I despise my wimpy nature; down deep, I know it could be awesome.
That said, had an intact, loaded with batteries, few in the small pool at the motel last but one con I attended, and the 5 yr old grandchildren LOVED swimming around with paranhas and anglerfish. It's interesting having one or two bearing down on you. lol
I included the quote above as the anglerfish in the first link has it's eyes sufficiently high to make it a much better waterline candidate. Not that the owners would like to think of it sawn to pieces. ;->=
As for the other quote, whether explosive or electric trident, I assumed spar as well.
Doug
-
The beast
Your post only shows the toy in the box. Have you got any pictures of what you achieved? That could be a cool sub with some work.
Got some work done yesterday.
Also thought about the spar torpedo. I like the idea and I now quite like the idea of more an angler fish look. Here is the two options I'm thinking about...
Spar torpedo or light?
-
Gotta have a spar torpedo.
-
Looking great so far :-* :-* :-*
How do the crew get in?
Go with the spar torp, give the sub a bit of bite :D
-
I'll third the spar torpedo :D
Does it have just the one propellor or are there plans for more?
cheers
James
-
Short of buying one that's all I've got in my bits box that's good enough for a propeller. I was considering just putting a disc of clear plastic, that would be bigger than that small prop, to simulate a moving one.
Colin
I've still got a conning tower to build with a hatch. Thanks for the donation of the sailors by the way. I may have to build some sort of sub/landing craft so I can use them in a game...hmmmm...
-
I have to say I prefer the more bend shape of the light one.
-
If you want to go with the swooping shape of the angler fish's lure but still have it as an offensive weapon, how about having a mine there instead of a torpedo? Could even be a magnetic one so it could be attached and then abandoned to explode.
-
Looks superb so far, keep it up I await the finished product!
Thanks for sharing
Steve
-
YPU
I prefer the skinny one too, but I would like to have something that let's me use the sailors my brother gave me. Unless I make a fish-walker? Does anyone else have anything for a Nemo army?
Debakuk
Do you not think the mine-laying option would be difficult to use in a battle? The sub would have to traverse the battlefield while being shot at, get up to the target while enemy divers are trying open up the sub with can openers, place the mine and run away again.
Stared work on the base. Used the build something contest for inspiration and used an old cd. It's filled out with rocks from the garden and pollyfilla. I used a wee bit of green stuff to make a few starfish and shells.(I just realised the shells make it look as if the sub has pooped!) I think I'll add more shells and stuff, it still looks a bit barren. Not much left to do apart from make a weapon and a side fin and few touch ups. Then on to painting!

Any criticism or ideas welcome.....
-
My criticism is that you are too talented, you and your brother have caused my therapist to increase the dosage on all my meds to combat the depression and inferiority complex you both gave me.
-
:-* :-* :-*
I love the little feet :D Great idea
cheers
James
-
Wow!
Nice job and fast too!
Definitely too much talent here... ;)

LOL same here. I immediately think of the walking fish from Futurama.
This build has been something i have been watching through it all. And i agree that is has come along nicely. Keep up the great work. :-)

Hey, I never said it was practical! It'd look good though. Lets be fair a spar torpedo isn't the most practical weapon around either :)
-
Its looking superb now, absolutely stunning :-*
-
I think I will just ignore the previous post ;D
Far to fishy for my liking.
The sub looks great :-* :-* :-*
Have we seen a figure against it for scale yet.
And no you can't join the build something contest >:(
Your moving machine breaks the rules (thank god as it is far to good lol)
Are you bring it tonight?
-
Nice,
Reminds me of the terrorfish subs that the gargling evil guys from Stingray had:
Any more planned?
The Commander
-
Ray
The only reason it's going so fast is the support I've got from fellow LAFers. I've got a hundred projects sitting on the shelf unfinished(ask gamer mac..), but because people here give you feedback it makes you want to finish.
Colin
That's the next project, paint the crew!
Commander vyper
That terrorfish would be fairly easy to make. Using strips of card stock or thin plastic card to make overlapping rings for the tail you could make a more dynamic model than I've got. Replacing the ackward tail on mine....the only thing I would miss personally would be the chance do all the pipe work.
Sorry the only bit of paper I had to hand was part used..
-
Possible paint scheme option..
I quite like the idea of it being mainly navy standard grey( it helps I've got a can of spray paint that colour!) with a light sky blue belly/lower section and darker( toward black) top bit. I also like the idea of brass/copper piping and fittings.. What do you think?
-
I like that choice of colours alot. Nothing esle to add, go with it. :)
-
Seconded :D
cheers
James
-
Awesome idea!
At the speed you work... it should be done this afternoon! :o
:)

Believe it or not I do actually have a real job( unfortunately! :-[)
-
A brass/bronze would look good too, failing that a mackerel-sque finish with the striping would look nice.
-
Looks absolutely fantastic, I just love all the little details, especially the legs. Can't wait to see it painted :)
Haarken

That's the model finished. I decided to leave the weapons til later and what I'll do is leave them removable. I'll make up a spar torpedo, buzz saw, harpoon and a mine laying arm, make two holes in the fish's nose( do fish have noses?) and pin the weapons on as needed. Gamer mac let me steal some of his aquarium plants and I've cut them up to look like seaweed. I've also added some small fish. Their just bits of thin plastic card cut to shape and stuck to brush bristles. Hopefully when their painted you'll hardly notice the bristles. Next on to painting and once that's done I'll use some lichen (right spelling?) that i use for bushes and trees and cut them down really short to look like sea plants.

Sorry for all the pics. I know some people don't like that, that's why I changed the header.
-
Don't apologise for all the pics, keep 'Em coming, its a bloomin' work of art ;D :-*
-
People who don't like pics are just weird.
-
Looks absolutely great Andy :-* :-*
Ooo, how about weathered bronze for a colour scheme ???
cheers
James
-
Green-bronze like the terrorfish or gold-bronze like the mechanical owl pit of clash of the titans?
-
Ooo, choices choices...
Green bronze would be nice :)
cheers
James
-
Believe it or not I do actually have a real job( unfortunately! :-[)
Obviously you don't eat or sleep... ;)
Looking great!
-
I can't believe I missed this thread. This build looks great.
-
friggn awesome is all I've got to say, cant wait to see it painted
-
Started painting it this weekend. Sprayed on the basic colours and brushed on some highlights. I thought if I do this early enough in the painting you could tell me if I'm going wrong...

I've still got a lot to do. I want to try and tone down the stark black weathering and add the blackish tiger-shark stripes. The bronze thing, I don't think I can pull off the weathered look. I'll try and give it shot tonight.
-
Andy its looking really good now. Its another triumph in the making ;D
-
This is going to be a great piece.
It is looking realllllly good! :-*
-
That certainly hits the bill. Now for the rust :D
cheers
James
-
Never got round to the rust last night but tried out a wee bit of the bronze painting and washed the base with GW dark flesh.
The eye portal is the only bit done and it looks silvery for some reason in the pictures. In real life it's more goldy, still not the colours I want. The base colour is dwarf bronze, highlighted with shining gold, with mithral silver to finish. All GW paints. I might start again and leave out the silver.
-
Well so far it is a triumph! I love it.
-
Well so far it is a triumph! I love it.
I agree! :-*

Simply fantastic! The colour scheme is shaping up really nicely and showing up all that amazing detail.

Brilliant work. I was intrigued when I saw the first WIPs but I wasn't sure how it's going to turn out. This is spectacular!
One question though... Since this thing is nearly constantly under water, would rust make sense? How about oil stains instead?
-
It's a gorgeous piece of work :) There's an octopus in the undersea familiars pack that Reaper makes thatwould go nicely on the base. Just a suggestion!
-
Hhhmmmm.....mechanical octopus. Now that'd a good model to make!
-
Wow.
-
Now all you need is a waterline version for a surface game.
-
Herbyf
I was already thinking of something like that. I've got a wee sketch earlier in the thread of a landing craft version and I've got a bundle of Russian sailors to paint up as a nemo army. Any ideas welcome.....
-
My brother brought his Mini sub to show me, so I took the opportunity to take some more photos for you.

What about a mechanical squid after this build?
...I may be getting sidetracked a wee bit! :?
-
Genius yet again :-*
You have to build it ;D
-
I'm starting to experience some serious modelling jealousy toward you guys. :-[ (I mean that in only the best way, of course.)
-
Do the squid, do the squid do the squid :D
cheers
James
-
Oh yeah, you just have to do the squid. For the tentacles (at least the two with the "sucker pads"), you could use these tubes used for oil or water on certain cutting machines. I realize I'm not being very clear, I'll try to find a pic and edit this post. BTW the sub/diver combo on the pics is amazing. Man, I wish I had a brother...
Yours truly,
Sir Dryden
EDIT Couldn't find what I was looking for. Sorry. Build it anyway, it'll look great!
-
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/7/1912_05_11_10_7_28_33.bmp)
I think Sir Dryden means this type of thing.
-
Yes Gamer Mac, that's exactly it.
Could prove to be hard to paint, but these flex-lines (that's the best I could do with my Google-Fu) would really look good. They are a bit on the largish side, but hey, that zeppelin wasn't exactly small either...
Yours truly,
Sir Dryden
PS Hey Mac, where did you find the pic? I'm curious 'cause I see a LOT of potential in this flexi-thing. Could be useful to know where I can buy some. Thanks in advance.
-
I'm starting to experience some serious modelling jealousy toward you guys. :-[ (I mean that in only the best way, of course.)
Yeah i'm worried to ahve a go at anything. No way i could live up to this sort of expertise..
:?
-
PS Hey Mac, where did you find the pic? I'm curious 'cause I see a LOT of potential in this flexi-thing. Could be useful to know where I can buy some. Thanks in advance.
Try machine coolant systems on the web. I think they are expensive though.
-
Yeah i'm worried to ahve a go at anything. No way i could live up to this sort of expertise..
This is very high quality modeling.
It is the kind of thing to aspire to... but shouldn't stop anybody from dipping their toes into the water.
-
The sub is fantastic but it really really really needs a mechanical squid to attack it. This is a brilliant build project. More please! :-* :-*
-
Cheers for the support guys, but anybody could make it. It's only magazine cover used for the body and small scraps of card and plastic piping for the rest. You could even just roll up bits of magazine cover to make the piping if you didn't have the plastic!
Got a bit done over the weekend. I started the tiger shark striped pattern over the top. After that all I've got to finish is the bronzing. Job done!
-
Haha yeah okay, make the squid then lol
I think what I like most is that you guys, being brothers, can hang out and make stuff... right?
But I completely hate how gorgeous everything looks ;) Keep it up!
-
That tiger striping is beautiful :-* :-* :-*
It looks like there is water above and thats the sun reflection 8) Stunning work
cheers
James
-
After a small distraction painting a couple of figures for my nemo army I figured I better finish this or it'll sit on the shelf and gather dust! At least this way the dust will sit on top of a fully painted model :)

I changed the gold parts a bit, I thought they looked a bit too silvery and I added some colour with the red shield and orange light above the periscope.
I've still got some weapons to make for it, bit just now I would rather make up some thing I can use in a standard gaslight game. So as well as painting the nemo army I'll make up a couple of landing craft the same way I built this. Any ideas welcome..
P.s. I'll do the squid later!
-
Totally awesome - perfection in fact :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Andy, that is a thing of beauty... Top quality modelling and painting. Well done.
Now on with the squid! :)
-
Magnificent. Can't wait to see whats coming next ;D :-*
-
Yup - what can I say :o :o :o
So very clever. :-* :-* :-*
-
Great finish :-* :-* :-*
Love the brass bits
-
Gorgeous final product. You and your brother are ruining this hobby for me. lol
-
:-*
Looks superlastic!
(All the best adjectives have already been used, so I made up one. ;) )
-
Totextrawsomstic!
(see Ray Rivers' answer).
-
Absolutely stunning, Andy! Real craftmanship and highly creative.
:-* :o :-*
-
:o Whooa - very nice, three more escort subs and a large whale combined sub/landing vessel and you`re there... lol
Splendid work. :-*
-
Love this! Disney eat your heart out!
-
Wow. I may nick the scheme for my 'Dora the Explorer' one that has been sat gathering dust due to a painting block!
-
I've already posted one pic of this on Westfellachris's thread, but for completeness I thought I'd post some here as well.
After seeing chris's great sub I only had one thought, I need to beat it up. It's too good! :) We discussed it earlier in this thread about weapons to add. The first one I've made is a buzzsaw. My plan is to have them removable so I can change it for any game. I'm also working on a shield to cover the holes when there's no armament.
I plan to follow this guys tutorial on armour making to try and make the shield.
http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,sculpting.php?id=571 (http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,sculpting.php?id=571)
Here's my efforts so far with the weapons...
We talked of spar torpedos, mine layers, I joked on chris' thread about a can opener arm, I could do a grappler. Anybody got any other ideas?
-
I love this one. For other armaments, I think one should be careful to avoid the utterly ridiculous (including, to my mind, the can opener unless added to the tip of a ram) and mainly focus on the amusingly off-beat, like the spar torpedo. Or maybe an "adhesive charge" used to attack surface vessels, i.e. a barrel of explosives with a cartoon-size magnet on top?
The aforementioned electric discharge weapon might be a nice one, too. So have, say, double "horns" on the vessel's prow which penetrate enemy hulls, then discharge, then withdraw, or drag the unfortunate attacker to a watery grave as he cannot disentangle in time.
-
Love it Andy :-* :-* Just don't paint it JCB yellow lol
cheers
James

Oops!!

Tried to make a shield with a big 'N' in the middle. Can you spot the deliberate mistake.....
-
Is it Australian?
-
This is really inspirational stuff! I feel a sudden urge to abandon all the other projects I still haven't finished and start a whole new one I'll probably never finish :)
-
A great example of fantastic and inspired scratch-building. Very Well Done.
