Interesting - at least to me - the Estonian film clip seems to show the
Danish volunteer corps in Estonia 1919-20. It is the soldiers with
English helmets and very light grey uniforms. Also a picture of the
Danish commander is shown in the clip.

I do not know how good Google is with Danish, but you will find out.

Good stuff! Didn't know there was film of BB. Wow. That game looks like fun. There is also another board game style game of the Russian Civil war as well called "Revolution Under Siege Game" http://www.revolutionundersiege.com/revolution/index.html. I downloaded the Demo and played it a few times...good to help you get a good feel of the Geography and the troops involved.

Joint film of the USSR and Hungary. 1967.
The film has English subtitles.
The film fairly grim. A significant portion of the film took the stage executions and massacres. I think it accurately conveys one aspect of the Civil War.
More impressed by a scene of desperate and hopeless attack red and singing at the end of the movie International. In some ways, it echoes with a scene of the attack from the white "Chapaev."
I must say that the annoying ads (clip at the beginning of the film and the window appearing in the show). Alas - a payment for free viewing.

I had researched the title since but could never found it, it was very frustrating because I have lots of other Russian military music but I was unable to recognize this one. Now I know the title! :)

I always loved the Whites marching in this film. Though I have to admit the translation of 'psychological' to 'psychic' makes one think of something else entirely :D

I read a good article, a study in one of the Russian military and historical journals about the phenomenon of psychic attacks during the Civil War. It was not an uncommon phenomenon, as part of the White forces, and by the Reds. Although it is often the cause was not excessive heroism, and simple lack of ammunition.
Moreover, if the attack was on the troops, which have a low combat experience, very often they are able to put to rout with little loss. Nerves some people do not iron :-)
But if the enemy turned out to be well trained and stable soldiers advancing losses could be considerable, and she attacks - ineffective.

"Home Among Srtangers, a Stranger Among His Own"
At Home Among Srtangers, a Stranger Among His Own is a 1974 film starring Anatoly Solonitsyn and directed by Nikita Mikhalkov.
The setting is post-Russian Civil War, during the reconstruction of the young Soviet republic. During the war, Shilov, Sarichev, Kungorov, Zabelin and Lipyagin had become great friends.
There are two main plots in the film, the first involving the theft of gold by outlaws just after the Russian civil war. Though the cannons are now silent, the enemy continues to harass the Soviets.
The regional committee sends a precious shipment of gold by train to Moscow, and a group of Cheka soldiers led by Shilov are entrusted with the responsibility of guarding it. The gold is needed to buy bread from overseas to feed the starving population. When the train is attacked by bandits, the guards are killed and the gold stolen. Shilov is kidnapped before the train sets off, and is dumped in the street, pumped full of drugs, after the attack. He is suspected of treason, partly because his brother was a "White", which is where the second plot comes in. Shilov must infiltrate the enemy camp to find the gold, hence the title.
The second plot involves the Shilov's desire to clear his name of murder, and he must find out who killed his friend. During his efforts, Shilov uncovers a web of deceit and treachery, which allowed the robbery to succeed. The story of a hero battling against corruption and greed echoes the cattle baron or railroad Westerns...

Ooooh yes!!! I remember this film. Seen it many years ago on French TV, which showed it once or twice at a very late hour in the night. I remember it as quite impressive - we didn't see many film about the RCW then. Now it looks very old-fashioned, but – history of nearly one hundred years ago, in a film made almost 50 years ago, is still… impressive when you think about it.

So this is a RCW song?
It becomes difficult to know which songs are from the historical period, and which are not. I watch with interest the videos of the Moscow parades on May 9th and November 7th; and it seems that songs about the RCW or WW2 but written much later are now very popular in the Russian army (as "Нам нужна одна победа", and "Tri tankista", very good songs but written a long time after the events).

This small bit of North-West Ukraine was a part of Austria-Hungary before WW1, so they were mustered in the Austro-Hungarian army (and they had to fight the Russians).

In this army is a very interesting story. This army fought against Russia in the First World War, and then fought against Poland, against the Bolsheviks in the Ukraine in the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR), further Galician army joined the White Army, and later - sided with the Reds. During the Polish-Soviet War, part of the army remained in the Red Armyand part sided with the Petlyura (UPR).

Mishka Yaponchik was an Ukrainian gangster, Jewish revolutionary and Soviet military leader. His commanding personality and unconventional nature led Isaak Babel to base his character Benia Krik in The Odessa Tales on this legendary criminal.
Born Moisei Vinnitsky, Yaponchik was an exceptional and eccentric character. He rose quickly through the ranks of the criminal world, becoming head of the mob and establishing his own code of conduct forbidding the robbing of the poor and professional classes. Hailed as the next Robin Hood, he held the hearts of the people in his hand and soon controlled the entire city.
Artistic and witty, his bold crimes played out like mini dramas but Yaponchik, always calculating his next move, also had a generous nature. He held huge feasts for the whole population of Odessa, giving money and food to orphans, the homeless, the unemployed, newlyweds as well as families who had fallen victim to gangster crime.
Yaponchik was in power for only three years from 1917 to 1919, but these were the most dramatic years of his life, filled with more action than most people experience in an entire lifetime - his rise to power, his daring crimes, his idealism and generosity and his love of two women - his beautiful wife, Tsilia and anarchist Lisa, his loyal accomplice who remained by his side until the end.
For wargamers is interested in the fact that, "Mishka Japonchik" created from the Odessa gangsters, regiment, which fought on the side of the "red" against Petlurites. It should be noted that due to the total indiscipline, the regiment did not last long and was quickly defeated, and himself Moses Vinnitsa was killed during the arrest for failure to fulfill an the order. Alas ... There are lots of of interesting Russian films and TV series that not have even English subtitles, not to mention the simultaneous interpreting or full English dubbing.
In this series, the characters speak a unique dialect of Odessa - this is a very original and beautiful mixture of Russian, Ukrainian and Jewish language. This dialect is impossible to convey in translation, which is a pity)))

A mixture of tragedy, crime film, and sometimes comedy (some characters are a bit clownesque but I understand it's a Russian tradition), on the whole it is very well the spirit of so-called "Back of Beyond" adventures (although not located in BoB areas but in Odessa).
I recommend reading the stories of Isaac Babel
Some of his works have been translated in French very long ago; I think I did read "Red
Cavalry" many years ago... The "Odessa Tales" are also known but I don't think I've read them - I surely will!

This film is based on the book about Vasili Ivanovich Chapaev (1887 - 1919) who was in real life the Commander of the 25th Division of the Red Army. Chapaev is an uneducated peasant and a decorated hero in the World War I and later in the Russian Civil War, that followed the Russian revolution. This man of action is fighting on the side of the poor people. His troops consist of peasants, just like him. Unable to write, he can brilliantly demonstrate various battle tactics by moving potatoes on the table. He is street smart. He never lost a battle against the experienced Generals of the Tzar's Army.

I think I've seen this Chapaev movie once ...but very long ago! ...in the 1980's ...at a very late hour, on the French TV...
...in these years the French TV did show some Soviet films in "Ciné club" programs, late in the nigth - as if it were an old museum thing!
I suspect it was an excuse, they would not have been allowed to do it in the main TV programs in these days.
This is quite funny (or sad) when we talk about it now. Film making in the USSR was certainly under state control. But they made good movies. Which were not fairly broadcasted in the West, as they should have been.

Yes, indeed, in the USSR many good feature films were shot. They, of course, often had some Soviet propaganda, but this does not detract from their artistic merits.
In addition, «Chapayev» accurately reproduces real events. The book on which this film was made is written by Furmanov, who was a commissar in Chapaev's division.
And in these films there are magnificent battle scenes. The attack of the tachankas in the film «Alexa Dundich» is excellent. Although in the artistic (and historical) aspect, it is much lower than the movie «Chapayev».

Slightly off-topic but you're probably a good man to ask. Have they ever made a film/ TV series of Yuri Olesha's 'Envy'?
I remember reading it at university and I was absorbed by it. Seems it would have been an unlikely subject for a film treatment under the Soviet but maybe something has been produced since?

Yes, it is a well. It is usually closed so that it does not blow dust and debris.
An interesting point in the first video - salvo shooting at the machine gun. The machine gun crews were apparently put out of action by the very first volley and this made the Bolsheviks retreat.
The training and experience of the officer units was the highest. The company in the second episode is commanded by a general(!). In the initial period of the war, undisiplined detachments of the Bolsheviks were easily destroyed by the officer detachments, despite the overwhelming superiority of the Bolsheviks in numbers.
