I need a large aeronef for a big game next year, but I have been suffering from a crisis of design options - nothing I came up with quite fitted the combination of the right design aesthetic with simplicity of build. Then I noticed this model going cheap in my local model shop:
At 1:48 scale this model is about 12" long. Its a very simple kit with lots of moulded-in detail on the deck that I can't use. However, what I really want from this kit is the hull. The deckhouse also has potential for conversion, if only as the former for a more Victorian design (and I do like the roof mounted MG position). This will giive me the basis of a nice sized 'nef with 'proper' hull and a the opportunity to mount a lot more firepower than you can on commercially produced 'nefs.
Wish me luck!
-
Definite potential there.
Also like the roof mounted gun position.
Not many rivets though... :'(
-
Looks good that Dave. Move the cabin back, put some big steerage fins on the rear and a big turret on the front and you have a winner :D
cheers
James
*edit for stupid spelling ::) *

Thats pretty much what I was thinking :) .... plus lots of rivets
-
Oh wow, that definetly gives me some ideas for a patrol boat I have been wanting to build.
-
I've had that model in my hands with a similar thought in mind. I look forward to seeing what you can do with it.
-
Thanks for remembering to put in the mini for scale.
-
Great idea, looking forward to seeing it come together and then of course shooting at it :D
-
It'll go down in the first turn ;D
cheers
James
-
That is the general rule of thumb...your nice, brand new model that you've spent ages lovingly converting and painting always cops it in the first turn. I think it's called sods law!! :-[

It certainly is for Mr Bibbly's ships lol
-
Only if it has a Jap flag on it.
Good start Bullshot.
Will watch with interest

Indeed and add extra i don't think you can ever have enough..
-
A very interesting starting point, I really can't wait to see how this turns out.

Lots of potential there, I think! I'll watch developments with interest. :)
-
I want to make one of these now. Only problem is that it'd be way cooler than either 'nef I've made already and I don't have a force allocated to use it.
-
Egads ... 3 days gorn and not a hint of a rivet!
Has Bullshott been way laid by those ne'er do well Johnny Foreigner types?
-
He's plotting... I can feel it. :D
-
Sure is a great donor hull. Look forward to seeing it progress.

I'm planning on a session on it tomorrow.
Just slipped on ice and wrenched my shoulder, so not feeling like rivetting tonight :-[

Crickies! Well, remember, cold packs, then warm.
Unfortunately, my experience is it'll be worse the next day. Knit up as best you can.
You really love hearing us whinge impatiently anyway. Oh, you know you do...

My solution was Red Muscle Relaxant .....
....that's Cabernet Sauvignon (not a Radox bath as some would suggest) :)
Progress so far:
- New plank deck fitted
- 'Steel' supporting strips added to the hull (ok - that's plastic striip to help make it look a bit more 19th century)
- The long task of adding rivets has commenced ....
No photos yet - I'll take some when I've finished the hull rivets
-
Wow! Sounds promising. Looking forward to the photos.
-
Still rivetting the hull.
-
Basic hull riveting completed. I need to do a litlte bit of tidying-up on the joints between the rivetted supporting strips and also around the edges of the plank deck, but otherwise the first phase is complete:
Next phase will be to re-model the deck house.
I also need to have some thoughts about what I want the tail to look like.
-
Wow! That is looking pretty special already, you've certainly been very busy rivetting. I really can't wait to see how this progresses.

Good sized hull!
Cool looking gun!
Coming along very nicely!
-
This is looking fantastic!
-
Looking good Dave. What nation will this be for and do you mind if I shoot it down anyway? ;)
-

Not if I shoot it down first :D
It's looking great. :)

Could be British .... or Prussian .... or American .... or Feench .... or Japanese .... or maybe some entirely different owner ;)
In other words, I think I'll keep you all guessing forr the time being :D
-
Armament decided on and side sponsons completed for machineguns.
-
;D
Good Man!
Awaiting new photos!
-
After much punching of 2mm discs for rivets, the deck house is almost finished and the side sponsons have been fitted to the hull:

Deck house detail:
The next stage will involve adding a smokestack, mast and other detailing to the deckhouse. After that I need to build a tailplane.
-
Awesome build :o
-
Really nice :-* :-* :-*
Really coming along.
It is going to be one heavly armed small neff :o :o :o
-
Looks a cracker Dave :-*
cheers
James

Awaiting new photos!
Well... that took awhile! >:( ;)
But was worth the wait. :-*
You really went rivet crazy on that puppy o_o and she looks GREAT!
-
Yep she's coming together ver nicely ;D
-
Oh yes, that model was definitely the right choice. Gorgeous!
-
That looks stunning. Can't wait to see the finished nef :o
Aaah the joys of scratchbuilding VSF vehicles! :-*
Cheers

-
Good design Dave, I like it!
I know you're going to paint it but with the current colour scheme and all those rivets it looks like a Pearly King. :)
(For those of you not versed in this part of Victorian London culture: http://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/PearlyKingsQueens.htm)

that's just perfect dave
well done chap,

Just a quick updat on this project.
Real life (whatever that is) seems to have got in the way of achieving much progress, so no new pictures yet. However, I have:
* Completed the deck house and fitted it to the deck.
* Started converting an existing smaller aeronef model to be this bird's companion.
* Fitted some new heads (from Woodbine/Gripping Beast) to an assortment of Old Glory Boxer Rebellion naval gun crew and Parroom naval landing party to give me sufficient sailors additional sailors to crew both vessels.
Next jobs:
* Make the fore and aft gun platforms for the new nef and fit a new fore gun position to the old converted nef.
* Assemble and paint all the deck guns.
* Paint the sailors.
* Sort out the tail arrangement for the new nef.
* Paint both nefs.
That should keep me busy foe a while :o
-
Great work, I really like this and shall watch with interest.
-
Deck house and deck fittings now all fitted except the rails (these will be the last bits I fit). This just leaves me with the tail/rudder section, for which I am still in a dilemma as to the final design.
Hopefully another picture this weekend.
-
I'm really liking how this build is coming along.
-
Awesome effort.
Have you thought of look at submarine stern rudders? Funnily enough I was just at a maritime museum looking at one..

hope that helps
-
oops ..sorry about the big pic
note to self: preview is my friend...
-

Had the same problem with the Blunderbuss. But once I fit the propellers, everything else fell in place.
-
I'd be thinking either an open structure off the back, or twin rudder/flapss to the side. I know the 'H' is pretty common, but it works well.
If you have to have something different, perhaps fore and aft, with the fore pair of rudders on the down side only? Would want to keep the field of fire open.

After a long break. I've finally been inspired to return to this project. To start gently I've painted all the crew figures and deck guns I need. I've also re-worked my original French nef (final painting tomorrow).
My big stumbling point with my new nef was the construction of the tail section. However, I think I've sorted it out and, as I type this, the glue is setting on the first pieces I need. If I'm really lucky I will finish it in time for BLAM.
-
Buiding an aeronef is on my TODO list, but it's such a big project, so I guess it will remain there for a long time.
Nice work so far. Certainly went crazy with rivets. Love it.
-
Looking great. Revel make some very nice ship models that work really well for the base of an aeronef (I used the Viking ship).
-
Need any more enthusiastic comments? You know 'nefs bring out the cheerleader in me! lol
Doug
-
Basic tail section assembled and looking good, but you will have to wait until at leas this weekend until i am able to post photos.
-
Almost finished.

Just a bit of greenstuff filling and some detail on the mast to add, then I'll be ready to start painting.
-
I can't see in any of the pictures: What is your support under the sponsons? Seems like they wouldn't stand up with just decking as the structure. I would have thought a bit of cylinder extended downwards would do, but even just some structural stuff would work.
-
Great stuff Dave, will we be seeing her in action next week ???
-
Almost finished.
Pffff... and I thought I took a long time build stuff... ;)
She's coming out quite nicely! :-*
Can't wait to see her painted and flying...
-
Looking good Dave 8)
cheers

Or, chains from above. Still, that's mighty thick decking. I'd not complain as is.
I will say some addition to the tail boom might not be amiss. Perhaps some edge and cross strips with rivet heads, suggesting an iron framework, visually tying the whole thing together.
Maybe even a small walkway on top, or is that too much?
Must say, had some doubts at the start, but it keeps impressing me at each stage.
Beautiful as is, better when painted.
Well done!
Doug
-

Unlikely, as I won't be able to start painting until this weekend. However, I may still bring her along as 'work in progress'.
At the moment I'm concentrating on finishing a new naval landing party unit and reworking my original French 'nef.
-
Assembly finished, undercoat now drying.
Now to plan my next flyer - could be a Venusian parrotman balloon ... or a commandeered Martian flyer ... or something completely different ....
-
Venusian parrotman balloon! Venusian parrotman balloon!

I have a couple of those that need finishing/saving. When I move house I might see what can be done.

:-*
The two 'nefs are going to make splendid companions!
Tell me, how do you do the really superb looking railings?
-
:-* Those are great!
What did you use to make the rivets? Did you punch them out of sheet, or did you cut a round rod into short pieces?
-

From page three of the thread 'After much punching of 2mm discs for rivets'...
Sorry, that's just crazy talk.
Things of beauty, Bullshott, things of beauty. Forget I ever made suggestions.
Doug

Excellent stuff as always Dave!

Oops - obviously I didn't read through quite as carefully as I'd thought. ::)
Sheer, wonderful, madness.... 8)
-

Uprights are from a model boat shop, as is the brass wire I threaded through to make the hand rail.
-

Not a problem sir! After you comments I had another look at the tailplane and added 2 lines of rivets along each side of the wood section linking it to the main hull. Looks much better now.
-
Bloody Brilliant Sir! ;D
-
Excellent work! Really fine stuff there.
Might you be adding any decals or other insignia?
-

No decals. Final colours will be as per her smaller cousin - black hull, grey upperworks, buff funnel and a tricolour on the tailplane. I may add a brass nameplate on the hull - when I deciode on a name! other than that, I will be adding either a big French tricolout flag or a set of signal flags to the mast (I have fitted a ring and cleats to attach 'ropes' for flags).
-
If you go for a semi-neutral name, perhaps like Bellerephon, you might also be able to use her for another nationality too by changing flags.
-
Very, very nice. I love doing this type of kit bashing myself.
Cheers. :-*

As I thought. Following up though, whenever I visit model boat shop web sites they always have tons of different sizes and I being a very easily confused individual, can never figure out which scale is correct.
Any help?

Let me know the website/page you are looking at and I'll try to help.
-
For stanchions I'd say look at the size, not the scale. Scale is largely irrelevant as they're essentially just poles with holes in, just look for a type you like that stands around halfway/two thirds up your figures.
-
Well, I have no ship building store in my area, so it is mostly trying to find a good web store which I also have had problems in finding.
Not to worry. Looking forward to the final paint up of this lovely 'nef!

Perhaps this would be a good thing to work up, say, sources and particular things to use, in the 'Where to buy VSF goodies?' sticky.
Still listening. :D

Well, it taken a lot lojknger than anticipated, but I've finally finished this project, with a whole week to spare before I need to field this baby st Salute!
Presenting the Montagne class aeronef 'Mont Blanc':

and escorted by her little cousin, the Oiseau class aeronef 'Piaf':

I'm looking forward to playing these at Salute. Hopefully they won't get shot down too quickly!
-
Look great :-* :-* :-* Now just to make sure they shoot down some of those new fangled foreigner machines ;)
-
Look great!
At least one of us will have Nefs.

The Mont Blanc came out very nicely!
Great conversion, matey! :-* ;D :-*

Mont Blanc? Mon Dieu!
Of course, every time I see the escort, I shall be thinking of Marion Cotillard... lol
Glorious!

You see, this is why I have Britsh Anti-Nef rockets on my side.
"Sir, the froggies have a 'Nef!"
"Right you are, Jenkins - sharp eyes! Signaller, flash a message to the sentinels. Priority One, bring down that 'Nef!"
--several tense minutes pass as the heliograph flashes the orders --
FWOOOOOOSH! BOOM! CRASH!
"Excellent shooting, what? Like partridge at Holymeade."
-
Great work, I'm jealous.
-
What everyone else said - though I think I'll follow Malamute. She really is a beauty.
<<Mais, M. Tourné-du-Taureau, ce dispositif aerospatiale, elle est plus belle!>>
(In case anyone really does want a translation, it's 'but, Mister Shot-of-the-Bull, this aerospacial device, she is most beautiful!', which really is about as good as my French gets.)
-
Beautifully done!
-
See, every time I think I'm cool, someone posts something like this and brings me down a peg.

Bounds, sir! After all the times you've left me adrift mastless, that's fulsome praise indeed!

And if I wasn't clear earlier, I do love it. I'll be looking for bargain priced Swift boat models now as well as all the other junk - I mean, incredibly valuable kit-bashing material - that I have or want.
