Title: Suggestions For starting 28mm WWII
Post by: Blue in vt on December 17, 2010, 06:09:59 PM
 :) Howdy all!

So I've convinced some friends to play some table top Wargames with me and they are interested in WWII (as am I)...as a gamer coming from the GW fold I really prefer 28mm figures so I'm looking for suggestions on where to find a good selection of reasonably priced 28mm WWII figs.  We will be playing skirmish level games (probably Force on Force Rules) so we don't need a huge number of troops but a good core of troops to expand upon.

Who are your favorites?

Cheers,

Blue

Since you are in the states I'd suggest looking at Crusader. If your group bands together and buys an Old Glory army card you get 40% off. http://www.crusaderminiaturesusa.com/index.php?cat_id=1 (http://www.crusaderminiaturesusa.com/index.php?cat_id=1)

Personally I'm also a big fan of Bolt Action Miniatures now carried by Warlord. http://shop.warlordgames.co.uk/28mm-ww2-bolt-action-101-c.asp (http://shop.warlordgames.co.uk/28mm-ww2-bolt-action-101-c.asp)

Depending on the theatre you wish to game and your budget. Personally, I'd go with Warlord Games.

Good luck in your search.

Cheers,

Helen

:) thanks for getting me started.  To clarify...we will probably be looking at Mid-Late war...European theater...France, Low Countries, Germany.  Eventually we may work in some Russians just to mix things up.

Cheers,

I personally prefer Black Tree, but I wouldn't suggest ordering from them.  If you can find them in a shop or other online retailer, however...

Artizan are great.
Bolt Action/Warlord are very nice.
Crusader will do in a pinch (yes, I know a lot of people like them, but I think they are amateurish for a professional sculptor).
Battle Honors are also worth looking at.

I like the Artizan range myself:

There are a lot of opportunities for mixing in elements from their Thrilling Tales pulp range as civilians, partizans and special characters too:

If you’re on a budget, you could use the plastic WWII British and German from Warlords

I really like Artizan Designs for two reasons the first is that I think they have fantastic character and strong sense of movement/action.The second is they are a real joy to paint and this is mainly due to a slight exaggeration to the body and equipment but not overly so,this makes getting to all the parts easy and the surface smooth to paint on,in other words very, very painter friendly. :D Coppelstone also has these qualities, but doesn't do WWII,however is worth viewing. ;)

I've painted black Tree, Crusader and Boldt Action/Warlord for friends. Black Tree are kinda 'meh'. Crusader are nice and the Bold Action are 'WOWZERS'!

Black Tree Design are a mixed bunch. A bit of a hit or miss thing. The German static MG34 is a fantastic set.

Despite all the figures available I still can’t find a decent "regular" GI. Artizan and Crusader look odd, the Bolt Action ones are more suitable for a winter scenario and it seem that every other figures in the Black Tree Design range are equipped with a set of binoculars… :-[

I'd also suggest taking a look at Great Escape Games http://www.greatescapegames.co.uk/ (http://www.greatescapegames.co.uk/) excellent 'Rules of Engagement' ruleset.

They're the best 'platoon action' level rules i've found so far.  Fun, easy, and intuitive.  And if you're coming from a GW background it should be quite familiar in concept...

When i talk to him in march, he does not have much time to do shows and does not have much free time.
send him an email, if he is not in spain this week?
He travel a lot, so he might be slow at replying.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions...lots of food for thought.

After a quick look at all the options offered to date...I must say I'm quite taken with the Renegade sculpts...I know they are a bit out of proportion and charateristic but coming from GW games I guess that's what I expect from figures...haha too bad the range is so small....I like their pricing too! even with the 40% shipping to the US its a good deal.

Can anyone point me toward examples of painted Renegade WWII minis?

Cheers...and thanks again!

Thanks David.

I'm very suprised in seeing no forthcoming releases from this company or otherwise not seeing folks collections that usually adorn websites.

I'm wondering if this is a hit or miss company?

Very quite,

Helen

Renegade do look nice, but they are very, very large.  Not 28mm at all.

My Brits are BAM (now Warlord)-these are the only range that included some correct kit such as additional loaders pouches for the Bren No2. Also lots of nice touches such as leather jerkins, mugs etc (paint your mugs white or brown-NOT steel colour as they were enamalled). My mortars are BAM and Crusader, 6pdr is Crusader-I just didn't want to fork out £12 from WG for theirs. Westwind also mix well if you want casualties, signallers and so on.

Having said all of that, if I had my chance over again I would DEFINITELY be mostly acquiring this range:
http://www.abfigures.co.uk/british_commonwealth_infantry.htm

this has to be the worlds best designed figures-they are extremely authentic, designed by a fantastic figure sculptor who to be frank knocks the spots off just about anyone out there-they just happen to be 1/76 scale.... :(
