I know many others have built paper buildings with foamcore, but I finally got a "how to" together for those that are interested. Hopefully some will find it helpful.

Nicely done, Audrey! That's pretty much the same method I used with the Fiddler's Green stuff, and Deathwing used with his WW materials.

Nice article. I was thinking writing up the same thing, you saved me the trouble. Of course, I do a few things differently, but really it's just the details. I do need to get gatorboard at some point in time. Consider the recessed door idea officially looted. I noticed that your streets are not linked, did you make a large masterboard or are you using using some type of mysterious voodoo to hold everything together? Do tell!

I'll bet it's voodoo. North Carolina is in the South. New Orleans is in the South. They have voodoo in New Orleans. Therefore Socrates is mortal. Or something.

You are correct. I do not have the streets linked. I never cared for the look of the butterfly links. The graphics tend not to line up well. My tiles stay together by sheer force of will 8). Actually I have never had a problem with the tiles moving. Generally I set up my boards on top of felt cloth on the game table. I have a slight shift happen once or twice but nothing terrible.
I have been meaning to go to a home improvement store and buy some of the thin rubber mat things that keep floor rugs from moving and put that under the tiles. I just haven't had a problem with the tiles moving so it has not been a high priority. Maybe it is the gatorfoam. I know the gatorfoam I use is slightly heavier than foamcore. I use roughly the same thickness gatorfoam as foamcore.

Pete you are kind of on the right path. I guess I shall reveal my secret. I am originally from Providence, RI. H.P. Lovecraft is from there. HPL spread the word of the great old ones. I was inspired by this and sought out the lost tome of Tectonicon. With this knowledge I have been able to use the rituals of the Tectonicon to keep the tiles in place. The cost was only a bit of my sanity. But hey it was worth it right?...right? :lol:

Excellent set-up Audrey!
I glued my street tiles to MDF cut to the same size. The extra weight meant that they don't move except for in an earthquake.

Another good idea. My only concern would be the weight of all the MDF tiles together for transporting.
By the way this is your Resident Evil game you ran a bit ago right? I think I saw the photos on Eerier Horror forum.

Another photo showing the beggining set up for a game this past weekend. You can see a few more street tiles, the back of an apartement building and my new (primed but unpainted) street lights I got, thanks to the link TadPortly gave me.

Very cheap method of keeping the foamcore-tiles in line and prevent moving:
Glue some sandpaper sheets under the tiles, something like the 100grid stuff, and lay down the tiles on felt cloth. No movement anymore, as the sandpaper clings to the felt (of course magically! :lol: ).
Very lightweight solution at low costs.

Nice job Audrey. The recessed doors and windows was the same thing I did with my paper buildings on foamcore. It helps improve the 3D look of the buildings. I have also found that you can glue bits to the buildings for even more of the right feel.

I know gatorboard has been mentioned before and I really want to try it out, but the darned cost is so high. Still, I found that all my paper terrain has become de-stickified due to humidity and I plan to rebuild everything. So its a good excuse to restart everything from scratch. I think I will order some gatorboard and at least use it for the new streets. I also plan to buy a higher end laser printer to get a better look than the inkjet I have now.
I think I will order some gatorboard and at least use it for the streets. I will also use the felt/sandpaper previously mentioned instead of the links. Getting the little pieces in and out of the foamcore was quite the fiddly process. So now I have to rebuild my little town. Oh what a fate! :)

I have tons of scraps from work on a regular basis, but you'd have to drive to Charlote to get some...

lovely work! The recessed parts make all the difference! brings shame to my efforts
For holding the tiles, I use a rubber mat that has a pretty good grip. You can see it sticking out off the sides in this photo (yes, zombie game as well!)

One thing about the pdf terrain I discovered is that they photograph really well. Esp those worldworks ones...

It really is a sight to behold and a joy to game upon. Of course, I thought Audrey was going to send me the "how to" earlier, but I see i had to wait for her to do it publicly. Sort of like the game we were supposed to have Sunday. I show up to find a deserted gaming spot.
Some of us in the group were going to do the whole resin cast stuff, like Old Crow, but the paper stuff is more time/cost effective. That is, of course, if you do not succumb to the other Evil of the Tectonicon...obsessive-compulsive disorder. :lol:
