I managed to paint some VSF today. You've perhaps seen the Martian in the other thread... the two other are new though. One is a British mechtomaton and the other is a test for the new British army I'm going to paint up (inspired by the INSPIRING work of Frank Becker).
-
cool like those a lot
mechtomaton is very good
dodge
-
I like 'em all - nice job. I particularly like the colour scheme on the Brit.
-
Very nice work.
I do like the plaid shirt on the mechtomaton, but it does look a bit 'lumberjack'.
< sings "I'm a lumberjack and I'm ok, ...."> lol
-

Yeah, me too. The grey works.
-
Yeah, me too. The grey works.
Dont know why but I thought you two would like that colour scheme.
Cracking paint jobs Dr.V! :-*
-
I like the shirt a lot. :)
-
The painting is great. :-* :-* :-*
I know the grey can be the correct colour for the British uniform but to me it is just not VSF. Just not cricket all this camoflage stuff you know old boy.
The plaid is outstanding. Where is the mech figure from?

Ah well. I did the white Prussian uniforms too you know. And my regular - Jonas - has a heap of Brits in Red/Blue. But I'll be adding black watch and all kinds of colourful stuff too. I'm contemplating Post yellow vehicles.. or red!
And the Martians I'm doing are very colourfull too.
Well.. I'm definitely going with the grey and the Sudan minis. I'm certain. I think. o_o :`
The mechtomaton is from Design 28. He's got two friends that I'm also in the process of lumbering up.
-
the mech is awsome!

I finisehd 9 more friends for the lone Martian
-
It looks a bit chaotic with all the colours, but the turbans and metalics still make it a united force. The orange faces are good and the overall appearance is also very good.
-
Well done thorbjorn. Your painting is getting better and better, if I may be so bold as to say. The check shirt is a triumph, and the rest of it is all jolly good too. Nice work.
(by the way, I watched PJ's latest movie 'The Lovely Bones' on DVD the other day. Total shit. And I said so. You'd have been proud of me ;)

Thank you very much sir. I am actually using a bit more time per figure now than I've been in the habit of doing the past few years. It is very much a question of "what kind of thing" it is. I'll never start painting fiddly on 60+ identical 28mm figures. But in skirmish games you can't push around blobs.

(Your skills are complete! Together we shall rule the galaxy!)
Well after my great speech about time per figure and all this I completely speed painting some Jaffa for a meet up tomorrow in which I hope to field my Martians and their Jaffa rulers.
As there really aren't any suitable Jaffa miniatures out there I just picked some random sci-fi miniatures to do the part:
Nothing fancy,.. just a quick job of metals. In fact I spend more time and colour on the eyes than the rest... lol
That brings my Martian army up to:
2011 will be a good year! Now when's BLAM? lol
-
Hey the Jaffa's may have painted up quickly, but they look great. Nicely done.
-
(http://lh6.ggpht.com/_YgOzHmVzYc0/TSyCGIi5HmI/AAAAAAAAC9s/SylYTG6YZyk/P1190116.JPG)
And the first 10 Brits were done. :)
-
Ooooh! Very nice! A lot of negative stuff has been written about the Wargames Foundry Brits, but I don't mind them at all. Good value for the money, and the bits left over for conversions..... Awesome.
-

Arh well. They're not good that is right. But I'm not really in a position to be picky at the moment. lol
I've always thought that VSF was about doing the best with what you had. Be that jar lids, cardboard tubes or ugly plastic casts(-aways).
-
I think that their weak point is the sculpts on the heads, and on mine I did quite a few head swaps (Old heroclix figs etc) But I've used the bodies on one project, the arms on another, and the leftover guns on yet another. The leftover pith helmets are great to have. It's too bad that Wargames Factory started the range with Brits, before the kinks were ironed out, because the more recent releases have been fantastic. Maybe they should do a 2.0 and start over
-
Maybe they should do a 2.0 and start over
That would be a very nice idea. I think the hands are the issue for me. They're more like lumps of undefinable plastic than hands... and of course the arms - they're just wrong! :`
I stopped buying WGF after the Zulu. The Zulu were OK, but more suited for 200+ games than the skirmishes I'm doing. (I won't rule out buying loads of Zulu at some point though... and with my economy that would end up being WGF zulu. Crossing my fingers that Perry do some colonial plastics soon)
-
They are rather horrid figures, but you have done wonders with them, T.N. Certainly good enough for some proper colonial gaming, I reckon. ;)
You don't half seem to be churning stuff out at a prodigious rate lately. You're putting everyone else to shame. By the way, I love the slightly gay-looking robot in his cowboy outfit, too.
-
Great painting on the Brits, Dr The Viking! I'm hoping to get some soon to add to my own VSF forces, I'm a bit nervous given the negative comments, but I can see positives.

That's Wargames Factory Chairface old chap.
BTW, from what I understand, there is a plan to re-tool the Brits hopefully in the not-too-distant future. And yes, the Zulus were intended precisely for low-cost high-volume troop-heavy games (as were the Brits in fact).
-

Thanks Plynkerly. You'll be delighted to know that I'm contemplating "proper" colonial business also. In the not to far future hopefully. lol
-
:-*
I think they look Great!
A very nice "away team" colored uniform, well painted. ;D
-
That's Wargames Factory Chairface old chap.
Oh dear, how embarrasing. :)
-
We've all done it at some point I think.
There's still time for you to go back and edit your origianl post and remove the evidence, then I totally promise to collaborate in a cover-up by altering my posts if you wish. No-one need ever know.

I finally got some point on "Tube-1" - the British attempt at steam building in my VSF... idea.
As ever I opt for the larger size, making the name "land ship" more fitting. lol
-
Lovely work , very nice . It vaguely reminds me of something ???
-
Great idea for the taps wheels! I think I copy for my VSF project. ;)
-
Very nice looking minis considering they're WF, I almost asked who manufactured them, they look so much better after a good paintob!

Isembard Kingdom Brunel has finally joined the African campaign. In doing so Britain has upped the arms race a knot. Here are presented Brunel's famous Walking Bomb Automaton. Inspired by the Mahdi's piloted version of the same.

Before this 'unit' is proper done, I need to make a Winding Automaton, a ladder for lighting the fuse and some Egyptian levies.. oh and my design28 Brunel of course.
-
lol lol lol
Oh, how I just laughed! Wonderful pieces. Outrageously funny. Two thumbs up.
-
Those are fantastic! :o
-
Hahahaha. Those are fabulous!!!
-
:-*
Wow! How cool!
-
these are great. I love the fuses. :-*
-
Yeah!! very good Walking Bombs! :o :-* :-*

Great idea and execution :-* :-* :-*
The fuses are brilliant lol

Absolutely brilliant!
I will ahve to steal those fuses!

These bombs reminds me walking bombs from Mario :)
But your bombs are absolutely amazing!
-
Absolutely brilliant!
I will ahve to steal those fuses!
I'd rather you just steal the idea lol
They're dead easy to make: clump foilage and grass tufts... I used an airbrush to paint the initial white layers as they're a bit fragile.
These bombs remind me walking bombs from Mario :)
But your bombs are absolutely amazing!
Small wonder! I used a German candy version of those bombs as the basis. ;)
-
Clever and VSF to the core
brilliant

Wait, these have a candy center?!? Oh, maybe a plastic candy case...
Should these be cases as opposed to candies that were only inspiration, any pointers, from anyone, as to if these might be available in the US?
Drop dead funny, the kind of thing you can't stop chuckling until you spring them on opponents...
Brilliant!
Doug
-
Your walking bombs are wonderful! :-*
I can imagine a kind of 'Dark Star' moment when a bomb toddles into the wrong place and has to be talked out of exploding. lol

This will be quite possible. The players have to pre-programme the automatons before the game starts using a set of counters (very much like robots in a certain old game).
I've yet to decide how killy they will be, but considering the randomness of their actions I think it will be rather a lot. lol
Should these be cases as opposed to candies that were only inspiration, any pointers, from anyone, as to if these might be available in the US?
They're easy to find... available after a quick google: http://www.candypros.com/super-mario-bombs-12ct-p-1939.htm

On an 'ell of a note, you dropped the 'L'. ;->=
Wait, you expected gratitude?!?!?
Oh.
It's only fair...
Thanks... lol

Isembard Kingdom Brunel
And here's a shot where he's rummaging through the African savannah with one of his automatons:
You have to be careful of the African wild life.
EDIT:
I might add that my British army is actually going to be the project I do for Horisont III: Starship Troopers 1889 (the gaming convention in November in Denmark). I'm trying to write an add-on for Battlefield Evolution which in turn would be available as a download (like the ones done by Agis Neubauer for WWII)
-
The Starship Troopers concept obviously calls for some drop ships. And I'll admit that I'm a bit split between two concepts:
The Balloon:
I imagine a standard air balloon lifting in and dropping a container (imagine a tuna can with a door and rivets on it) of 20 soldiers. The container is fixed to the balloon with wires and has a press release button. (never mind the actual psychics - they have soft cushions in the container)
The Steam Drop ship:
This would be somewhat of a copy of the original SST dropships only with steam tech added. And painted in a completely different fashion. Gold and bronze clockwork style.
I'm willing to upload some concept sketches I did, but I'm no artist. ;D
-
For a drop ship I have a few large xmas "bell" decorations still awaiting me to drill out pot holes add a door and some sort of "cushion" on the bottom (thinking of something like a pair of old headphones).
Add either a Balloon at the top or perhaps a big propellor just like a Sycamore seed.

In the war against the Arachnids scout craft like this Swigley A23 Aeronef have become invaluable; scouting out the African countryside for bug infestations.
A clever array of equipment enables the Swigley to perform in air reperations on other 'nefs as well.
However, the usual job for the automaton arm is simply that of dropping bombs.
-
Why am I consumed by mental images of Royal Marines fast-roping out of a hovering aeronef as the Gardner guns hammer away? Beautiful work!
-
The Swigley is a gem! :-*
I like the ideas for drop-ships too. A concept for a Zeppelin has been floating around my mind for a while, and I think a couple of 'tuna can' drop capsules could be added to the design quite easily. Hmm... ::)
-
Thank you!
I'm beginning to be very much in favour of balloons with tuna cans. lol
-
Great stuff, as I already commented on that other forum.
I must begin to get my Russians together, so you will have other things than bugs to face. But I have been a bit sidetracked on a secret project ;)
I look forward to try the rules with VSF.
-

That other forum! * cue cacophony* lol
I must begin to get my Russians together, so you will have other things than bugs to face. But I have been a bit sidetracked on a secret project ;)
Sidetracking is goooood! And now I'm completely bewildered about why or what you've been sidetracked by! ;D
Arf course the Russians should also have a Sudan beating. My 'project' with the SST is mainly just for Horisont.
Gaming boards and the British are easily reusable later.
I look forward to try the rules with VSF.
So do I... currently in a bit of a hassle with the fact that Mongoose has ended the open license. Though if I rewrite the rules with other words the rules are essentially mine. So I might do that. Or just make it a free supplement for a(nother) dead game. I would like to put everything in one book though.
-
Excellent stuff, I have only just caught up on all your recent additions :)

Thank you Mr. MalaMute... still waiting for the Martians.
The Sudan Tribune reports directly from the front of the conflict between Man and Insect:

The Askari are an invaluable asset in the war against the bugs Two Asakaris are almost the match of a single Warrior in close quarter fighting.
Although the Insects are generally brainless certain individuals do have the power to reason. Mr. Brunel is hands on with regards to figuring out what the bug mind fears!

Ingenuity vs. Evolution is proving to be the conflict within the conflict in fighting the Arachnids

The Swigley is a gem! :-*
I missed this going up on the yesterday. It's a hoot, indeed!
I like the ideas for drop-ships too. A concept for a Zeppelin has been floating around my mind for a while, and I think a couple of 'tuna can' drop capsules could be added to the design quite easily. Hmm... ::)
Sounds a bit like my long planned but never started armored zep with winged drop troops, Crayola 20K Leagues Nautilus and GW Bird men of Catrazza.
My poor physics world view suggested an armored zep might be apropos of Prussians in the heavy fetid atmosphere of Venus (water vapor is actually lighter than air) but one could claim similar in the wilds of Africa.
Still, great image, repelling off the side of the semi-globe...
And, as always, the sepiagraphs are thrilling!

Excellent stuff :-* :-* :-*
Love the period photos
and yes I want to know more :D
Well see more lol
-
A thought occurs... A drop-ship capsule could be attached to a balloon/airship model using some of those rare-earth magnets from the craft stores. That way it can be shown both in travel and deployed modes.
-
Ate my first can of tuna today. Drop ship building will commence shortly. lol
Mean while I finished a tanker bug:

Wonderful and wacky stuff all round. The whole idea of Victorian Great Powers VS Bug-Eyed Monsters from beyond the stars Has always been a rather nifty one, and you've pulled it off here to near-perfection.
Are those British Infantrymen in the last photo 28mm? If so, where from?
-
Are those British Infantrymen in the last photo 28mm? If so, where from?
Thanks and no - they're 15mm
But the tanker is waaaaaaay to little and wanted a nice picture! lol
The Mongoose Arachnids are rather horrible models most of them... but well - when you have a gazillion of them lying around.. and all that ;D
Their warrior bugs are easily the best they've done:

I would like to mount the drop ships on fishing rods... and let the players lower them to deliver their cargo as part of the game.
However on a 6' x 8' table I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out 'how to' without making it insanely expensive.
Looking at the Realm of Chaos thread in fantasy didn't help either... it kind of wiped the slate clean.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
-
How about a small hoop on the cargo containers and a hook on the rods, that might be just the ticket. The rods could be made out of bamboo sticks :D
cheers

While the whole of Denmark was annexed by Prussia during the 2nd Schleswigian war of 1864, a small resistance force did make it's way to the British isles where they set up 'The Free Danes'. Although the British offered much in the way of wargear and new uniforms (akin to the standard British ones) some veterans insist on wearing mainly their old uniform from 'the great defeat'.

This.
Looking at the plastics and comparing them to yours I'm amazed they're the same figures! Just shows the difference a good painter can make.

Thanks!!
LOL I even thought they were decent figures. Wouldn't want to know what you think of some of the things I slab paint on lol

No VSF without ze Prussians! (I touched up some old figs that I did a crappy job of some years back)
Now we just need to know what all these parties are doing in the thick of the jungle!?

Here's the bat rep from our game. I've tried to write in American comic book style.

Looking good, but I see a bit of historical inaccuracy.
Mr. Løwe killed Puddington, not Santa... Santa was killed by a normal Danish trooper :)
-
Maybe the comic book editor chose to edit it and change the plot..
Ah well... I was rather in a hurry when I wrote it up. lol

lol lol lol
I dont care who killed who, that was bloody brilliant!
That really brought a stupid smile to my face.
Thank you Doc the V!

Well, my pleasure!
I think this whole cartoon business is a bit funny, but I guess I can learn... If we play a scenario with an actual story in it at some point it will probably work even better. lol

As to who killed whom, I'm reminded of 'The Man who shot Liberty Valance' - "when the fact becomes a legend, print the legend"!
-
Yes thanks, that was fun!
-
And great thanks to Thorbjørn for the game!!
The hidden truth behind santa is finally reviled: He is obviously an actual historical person, who unfortunately got killed in 1879 - that explains why we do not see his sleigh on the Christmas night-sky anymore.

So much fun, I can hardly wait for the cinematic portrayal of...
Wait. What? Santa's a WHAT?
I didn't know he was a magician. :D
Thanks!
