Title: My fantasty armies (update 14/07/2011)
Post by: Braxandur on January 07, 2011, 10:59:36 AM
After 10+ years I'm finally getting to the point of getting a warhammer army completly painted. I've been playing for years, but with changes in the army lists and my utter lack of disciple in finishing of bases, I have never managed to really complete an army.

Well this time I'm going for gold!

Here are some shots of my last work, a unit of chaos warriors (of Tzeentch) and a warshrine (wip). Busy removing old basing material at the moment and rebasing some other models. More to follow in the next weeks :)

Really like the warriors, nice use of heads from various plastics. I really like the Kroot and Tau ones.

The warshrine is pretty cool too.

The Chaos wizards are amazing, are they GW? I've never seen them before.

Is it just me, or does the wizard on the right look like Lemy from Motorhead? I also would like to know where they are from...I dont think they are GW. Nice wip on the warshrine, what are you planning on using to pull/push it? ???

I I also would like to know where they are from...

Ditto

I really like the variety in the Chaos Warrior's regiment. I'd never have though of using Tau or Kroot heads. Which just begs the question what other head could you use? Beastmen, Skaven, Lizardman possibly even tyranid.

Cheers

The wizards are some old citadel minatures. If only I wasn't a yonug lad without money back then....  Otherwise I would have bought a lot more of the models of that era...

http://www.solegends.com/citcat912/c20242wizards-h.htm (dagger and beating heart)
http://www.solegends.com/citcat912/c20243wizards.htm (skull 2, or also in older catalogues:Mazda)

Tyranid heads are too large imho. I did look into that. Beastmen and skaven do fit quite well, thought the skaven heads have a tendency to be looking up... I did use Bestigor heads in my Khorne marauder unit.

I'll take a few more shots of the unit later on. Let's see if anyone van identify all 20 heads. Or rather from which 13 different sets they come.... (Tzeench , the master of time and space was telling me to use a lot of different sets :p)

The following pitures sadly show that there are still a few things that I do need to paint. Though, these guys were ready enough to hit the battlefield in this fashion without most people noticing. Still need to do boots, hair, one head and the wrapping on the weapons.

So in there are heads from 12 different sets (I mistakenly counted both Tau heads as being from a different set in the last post...)

The picture quality is a bit less then earlier on todat due to reduced light at the moment. :(

As for the warshrine, I'm planning to let it be pulled by a Chaos Spawn. I might but some bars on the lower half and put prisoners beneath the contraption.

The plan is to have a slot with a rare earth magnet the back, and a set of banners (each of the gods, and one undivided) that can be fitted.

A small update. The update on the Dragon Ogres is progressing rather well.

In the meanwhile, I have updated the bases on my warhound and marauder unit, so the army won't look like a lot of loose units

And off course, a shot of the units together, because they wanted a group picture ;)

I hope to have my warshrine and hellcannon finished in the next week or so. though I'm a bit sidetracked with job interviews and an old west project.

The aim is to have at least about 2200 points, but if possible around 3000, so I can mix and match a bit

I'm curious - how many models does it take to take you to 3000 pts?

I'm curious - how many models does it take to take you to 3000 pts?

Thats a good question... I still like to add the following:
3 or 4 trolls
one or two a unit of 5 marauder horsemen
the warshrine
a hellcannon
a gaint
3 characters on foot
2 on steeds
1 on monster (manticore, dragon or Griffon)
10 warhounds
1 chariot
2 chaos spawns

I'll probably leave the tzeentch theme at around 1000 points. Some units will be undivided and I would like to have around 1000 points dedicated to each of the gods

Luckily I already have 20 marauders, 10 marauder horseman and 5 knights dedicated to nurgle, as well as a block of 20 khorne marauders. Just need to update all of them in basing style and a few finishing of a few details to bring everything together as one army.

Post by: Dr. The Viking on January 20, 2011, 08:48:16 AM
OK!

That was significantly less than I anticipated.  lol

Reason I ask is that I've got a tonne of fantasy chaos warriors lying around and I wouldn't mind painting them at some point. In these parts of the world fantasy is one of the most played games... just not by me!
Title: Re: Warriors of chaos (update 19/01/2011)
Post by: Braxandur on January 20, 2011, 09:28:29 AM
It actually goes quite fast. The army in the last picture is around 750 points, add two characters and I'm already at my 1000 points of Tzeentch. Worse, I'm often suprised at how little units I have on the table...

Even then, the block of chaos warriors (now already 370 points) can be upgraded to chosen warriors (450 points) should I really want to go overboard.

Another update for the army.

The last few years I have used a resin "warped" model from the leviathan range in my army. The paintjob was 10+ years old and the base looked horrible. Last weekend I tore the model from it's old base, rebased it and tried to update the paint job. Painting skin on large models is defenitly different from painting on small models..  still, I tried to use the same style, so the model would fit in nicely with the rest of the army.

No stellar paintjob, but a job well done none the less :) One day, when I'm going to paint the giant from the "avalyne the lifegiver set", or Bakesh Va, I'll put more effort into it. Until then, this guy will do :)

To finish, a size comparison shot, to show that this guy works quite well as a giant.

No update in the following week, due to a trip to Madrid :)

I must honestly say that I have never seen a lot of painted leviathan models. Which is a particular shame, since ther eare some nice gems in the range... btw. Really like your blog.

For those thinking that I'm only working on my western scenery nowadays... Here is an update, with (sadly) few finished models...

A lot of these units are at the moment work in progress. If I manage to get all my units painted before a tournament in march I visit the units that need more work

anyhow, on to bussiness:

I rebased my old disc rider miniature. During the last few games it became quite evident that the older base was annoying for gaming purposes, the thing kept falling appart and was very static...

I didn't update the paintjob, which is at least 10 years old....

An old Lord of Change is now being used as a deamon prince of Tzeentch:

Painted around 3 years ago, this hellcannon got a new base. Still need to work a bit on that and give some parts of it it a (new) lick of paint

this hellcannon
Jeez, that's a fuckton of spikez and skullz!

Nice additions, apart from the cannon. Always had a soft spot for the lord of change minis... Never owned one, mind. Might have to remedy that! =)

1. The disc rider mini is one of my favorites, you did a good job on him when you painted him 10yrs ago.

2.This smaller version of the Lord of Change is my fav version of him.

3. The cannon is just the best, love the chains holding it in place.

4. The Warshrine, is sweet, really like the chaos sorcerers and the chaos spawn, all painted really well. The metal of the shrine and the red demon face really pop.

Love all those old minis

At the end of march the army will participate in a tournament, everything will be finished by then, meaning I can nicely start on this years LPL by then :)

Post by: Braxandur on July 14, 2011, 09:08:01 AM
It's been a while, with the LPL in between and a few more things going on, but I did paint a few more miniatures for my army.

I added an Army Battle Standard of Tzeentch on Disc with Halberd and shield.

Next to that there is a Shaggoth. Don't know if he'll ever be used, but painting him was fun. Still need to make a shield for him and paint the wood part though...

Next to that, there are some Beastmen, which really needed some work. While I would have loved to paint up my Tomn Kings, I disliked that there were already 3 people playing that army, so I went back to these guys.

I spend a few hours and the following units, just to get them done for a game.

A small unit of Minotaurs:

They are accompanied by a Doombull in arnour with a helmet (often ramhorn) and a set of two hand weapons.:

And lucky me had an old Leviathan chariot lying around (which you can still buy for only 8 GBP from Grendel)  which was pressed into service as a pumbaarazorgor chariot. Ik really like this model. The guy in the back is just standing on a 25 mm square base and can be removed if neccesary.

Since we have a small Blood Bowl tournament coming up, I also worked a bit on finishing my skaven team.

Starting off with the obligatory Linerats:

However without Gutter Runners the teams has a hard time scoring:

Some Blitzers make sure the centre doesn;t crumble like swiss cheese and give me the oppertunity to at least sometimes knock down opponents. A thrower is good support for picking up and throwing or handing off the ball to my gutter runners.

Off course you can't leave home without a Rat Ogre ;)

Last up, the most important manrat, the coach. He has his big book of tactics with him to help him decide on how to get the most out of his players. Still have a few days to finish the globes he is carrying and his base
(http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/braxandur/Miniatures/Games%20Workshop/Blood%20Bowl/Skaven/coach01.jpg)

And off course I needed a referee, It's a version of Big Boris from Heresey miniatures:

Good question!
I started off with P3 Bloodstone, which looks a bit like the olg GW vermin fur, though it is just a bit darker and then went on highliting towards Dwarf Flesh (GW). I obviously need a bit of matt varnish, since most of myhighlites dissapear in the pictures.

Digging up my own topic, always lots of fun :P

Here is an update from my chaos army:
It's been a while since I posted due to RL interfering. did get around to painting a few models, though most of them are at the almost finished stage needing only the basing done and some varnish, so taking pictures didn't happen. Still I have a few left overs that I can post, just to get back into the habit :)

I finished these almost a year ago, before our son got born.

First a Gorebeast chariot in which I replaced one of the crew for Goldar:

Then there was a quick paint Chimera, which took around two hours to get ready for tournament useage:

Lastly a small block of trolls. I tried to give them the same paint scheme as the trolls I painted 20 years ago and failed miserably. As such I'm not to happy with the blue, but have enough other models to paint that I'm not going to redo them. Except maybe adding some dirt, mud etc, to make them less clean:

Some very very cool stuff in this thread.  Love the referee, and I love your paintwork on the Shaggoth fella (always HATED that miniature though, lol).  Great work all around.

Top thread - would love to see some more group shots with them all together.
