Was thinking about trying my hand at a bit of sculpting...
Any recommendations for a nice starting set of tools?

I'm no where near an expert but dental tools are the way to go and I also made a couple of my own (as I've heard a lot of the pro sculpters do :) )
cheers

GF9 has a nice starter set:

And I find these very useful for blending muscle groups:

Dulled Xacto knives and sharpened H pencils are often useful as well.

Not much of a sculptor myself (mostly conversion work!), but I found the Royal Sovereign Clay Shapers to be super-useful.These are basically like brushes, but tipped with shaped silicone instead of bristles. Get the black-tipped ones though, as the grey / white tipped are pretty soft. I found the smallest sizes (Size 0) to be the most useful, and last time I checked most decent art shops (both online and brick-and-mortar stores) carry them. Also, Amazon had some over Christmas too I think.
Other than that, some fine dental tools and a couple of sizes of X-Acto blades are all I use really.
For doing rivets on models, fine brass tube or mechanical pencils are often handy too.

i picked up a set of 12 wax carvers from ebay for £6 - pretty much the same thing as dental tools for sculpting, plus i dropped lucky when lidl were selling a pack of clay shapers for £2 !!

I have no idea about sculpting, but I have a maybe helpful anecdote.
Once, talking about modelling tools with two miniature makers they said the tool they most frequently use is the lancet.
They use other for details, but at the end of th day the biggest part of the time they where using the lancet.
Lancet i would say is the bottom of this pic http://wargamesfoundry.com/tools_and_modelling/modelling/any/any/sculpting_tools_tool043/
On that conversation one of the sculptors was a Perry twin ( I don't remember if Alan or Michael) so i think it's a comment to keep in mind.

Those Lidl clay shapers are a wee bit big for my liking.

One tool that I like (and I am not a sculptor) I got at CVS it's a cuticle stick. Clear plastic rod with a rubber tip on one end and a tapered shape at the other. Works great for sculpting and smoothing out the surfaces. (And cheap)
