Title: The Lead Painters' League Season 5
Post by: Captain Blood on January 31, 2011, 11:00:36 PM
At long last, I’m really pleased to announce the 5th Lead Adventure Forum Lead Painters League (hereafter LPL5 for short!)

The new league will kick off in early March, and (God willing) run through to mid-May.

There will be 10 rounds, as in previous LPLs, with each round lasting one week.

The intention is that these rounds will run consecutively over a 10 week period - although we know from past experience that sometimes real life gets in the way. So please don’t be too surprised if there is a hiatus of a week or two here or there!

Rules are much the same as before – you can see the slightly updated version here...

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=25905.0

...including details of the LPL5 themed bonus rounds.

And yes, the themes for these bonus rounds were taken from suggestions put forward by you, the people, and mainly participants in earlier LPLs.
I hope you were careful what you wished for  ;)

I’m pleased to say that in a new departure, we are dividing the LPL admin workload, with the inestimable Ray Rivers coming in as Official Lead Painters League Returning Officer!

I will set up the matches and handle all the admin around that.
Ray will (thank God) manage the number-crunching, tally up results, and update / publish the leaderboard after each round.
I can tell you this is a vital but thankless job (unless you love spreadsheets), so well done Ray for taking it on  :)

Neither Ray nor myself intend to compete in LPL5, and we shouldn’t need to, provided we get an equal number of contestants.

The only other changes are to deadlines for entries.
I’m afraid these are shifting slightly to Saturday instead of Sunday. Why? Because trying to load up all the matches and send them live last thing on a Sunday night or in the early hours of Monday morning is just not practical when one has to be up, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for work first thing on Monday.  ::)
So this time, we’ll start each round Sunday daytime - which means I need entries in by Saturday lunchtime each week.
Depending where you are in the world (by time zone) this may be a help or a hindrance. Sorry about that, but it’s the way it has to be. And whatever you lose in painting time at one end of the week, you’ll make up for it in time gained at the other end of the week.

Oh yes, while I remember, a quick word on etiquette for both participants and observers.
We all want LPL entries and matches to stimulate comment and discussion, so it’s perfectly fine to comment on live matches. That's half the fun. But please try to keep comments constructive and don’t blatantly ‘boost’ (or attempt to torpedo) one or other entry.
So by all means comment ‘I really like what you’ve done there’. But please don’t go down the road of: ‘Well entry A is so manifestly superior to entry B, that I cannot understand why so many people are voting for entry B’.
That kind of thing will be edited by the Moderators.

I think that’s about it. The full rules, background, how it works, and how to enter are all available here: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=25905.0

You now have a whopping 6 weeks head start – get painting!

And good luck!  8)

Cheers

Richard

Thanks.

Great news but something of a double-edged sword as viewing of a fresh batch of your PJs will be missed, Capn B.

Hmm.  The bonus movie round.  I have a couple of options there.  ;)

I'm really tempted, but I'm pretty sure that I'll only make two three rounds before it all deflates due to all those boring stuff such as raising kids and making money to raise kids :/

Oh dear, you are... I think I have to undermine your credibility to make sure you don't beat me at every turn.

Apropos nothing, did you all know that Alex besides running a mini company beats up nuns as a hobby? Ever seen that picture of Mother Theresa with a big shiner over her left eye? That was the Professor.

Very good news, friends, and a big thanks in advance to both Ray and Richard for their engagement! I really hope to see some magnificent entries here, and will have a relaxing time enjoying them each Sunday evening.  ;D

I'll probably not participate due to a large project I'm working on for a customer (as some of you might have noticed in the workshop section), but who knows ...

I think I'll enter, but I too expect to fall apart at some point.  Luckily I do have a lot of figs to work on...  I usually paint in groups of four though, this will change everything!

You bunch of wimps!   >:(

 ;)

Okay, though my painting prowess is far from impressive, my productivity of late has been less than stellar. So... I'm changing my participation to "possible."  If I can get three teams ready before the start of the league, I'll jump in.

No! Don't do that, If they've got better things to do, their wishes should be respected.

It's quite possible Grimm and The Prof may drop out, if the Anthrax doesn't get lost in the post  >:D

So Round 10 has to be something that Alex and Richard recognize and, even better, truly appreciate. Hmmm, perhaps I should do an homage to Swedish 1970s light erotic films...?

I'd love to join in, but alas April is the start of expedition season and I'm already lined up run two and support a further two, plus a week long training course. Me thinks that my free time in April will be nil.

Still, I'm looking forward to logging on and seeing everyone else's contributions!

Cheers

Its about time you posted some painted figures. It will help you finish some of the stuff you have been buying recently. You also need some figures for that nice board you built. :D

Might have to give it a go this year, I suck at motivating myself so maybe a bit of a push would help,

Also have found stuff for all the bonus rounds, so fingers crossed that I will at least hit those!

My painting is a bit poor compared to many so I can't see me being in it for the ranking, but a bit of healthy competition might stil be cool!

See you all in round 1... I hope!

You can still enter. How about trying to enter the 5 or 6 you can do, and then re-submitting your best entries for the remaining rounds? OK, you won't get the 'new team' bonuses, but at least you'll be entering something.

I think I’ll try a new tactic this year. I will paint as much figures as I can before the LPL and will use the week between each round to build scenic setting and try to take decent pictures… Sound like a good plan and, like all good plan, it will surely fail before long… ;D

Saw it, still not sure what noncoms I could paint.  Do Zombies count as non-combatants?  I have so many things I need to paint, I volunteered to run a game at a con so I have to make sure everything is OK and looking good for that, plus find time to run a test game...

With Orks and Goblins getting a new book, I wouldn't be surprised if I painted something for that army, alas they don't really fit into fives...  I have to read the fine print about stuff that I've painted before the competition starts again...

Finally got the more or less definitive `planned` list made up now, after scrumaging through bits boxes, digging in heaps of the Lead Mountain mountainchain and sponsoring archeological expeditions to the bottom of the pile.

Three more weeks now and I can start painting for the LPL hoozaaah (nothing fancy, i just try for myself to always do things in the week in between each round, not to prepare in advance apart from opening from blisters and gluing parts together - yes, I`m weird  lol)

I'm afraid not. Any combatants of any kind involved in a conflict are not considered civilians. Civilians are the innocent bystanders in the background that really can't harm a fly.

As long as she doesn't try to safe her little daughter I'd say yes.  :D
I think this discussion is kind of fruitless as the good captain has already written everything there is to say about it.

Another Lead Painters' League, I love it! I missed out on LPL4 because I didn't really have time at the moment it started, but this time I'm armed and ready! I really like the bonus rounds and I think I can find something that fits in my collection and in the bonus themes. Time to get started! 8)

Just signed up for the site- and off course I'll join the league!

I love the themed rounds, makes me paint mini's I wouldn't otherwise and keep it a week's worth. Now to find them...

Gentlemen (and ladies) I shall see you on the field.

Welcome on LAF Byzantane. You won’t regret entering the LPL it’s a really friendly comp and it does force you to paint more figures in a relatively short time 8)

You've still got a few weeks until the start. Do those four later round entries now.

Thanks for the encouragement Gents

I think I could manage 6 entries before I leave and maybe one on my return. Have to buy some civillians and something new from Africa ( I wanted both anyway) and get cracking, have enough other stuff lying around in the painting queue will just try and paint 5 of each rather than finish whole units like I normally would do o_o

I think it's ironic that my lead pile always increases the most when I'm preparing for the LPL, whereas the LPL is supposed to be me decreasing my lead pile.   :?

That happened to me when I was in the League. Started off with all these good intentions of painting and entering figures from my gaming projects and in the end very little of what I entered ended up being stuff I even intend to game with. It's still all sitting in boxes having never been touched.

I just kept getting these flashes of inspiration. "Wow, I just had an amazing idea for a team!" And so on, and so on...

It was a total waste of time as far as clearing the backlog went. But I was enjoying painting all those different things so much that I didn't care.

I wish I'd have a flash of inspiration for Round 10.  It sounds dumb, but I don't really have much time to review movies for ideas.  I keep playing movies while I'm painting, but it's difficult to generate ideas re movie scenes when one isn't watching the movie scenes.   :(   And I don't like the idea of submitting minis that were made to be movie scenes, such as Conquest indians, Brigade arabs, etc.

I have all ten entries picked out of the Lead pile.
But I only have 5 painted figures so far. The shame is that the 5 figures are spread over 3 teams.
I have, what I think, is a good idea for round ten but not sure if I am going to have time to finish it ???

No great progress yet, but at least I have the first round figs mounted and primed. One fig half painted.

Also have two minis finished for an inbetween round, minis for round 10 purchased (and possibly arrived, haven't been to claim a parcel I've got waiting on me) and a few other rounds worth of figs are ready to take paint. With a newborn baby, I'm certain I won't have a new team for every round but hope to be able to do round 1 and round 10 properly, with a few new teams inbetween.

Post by: D@rth J@ymZ on February 11, 2011, 10:28:03 PM
Another issue with Round 10 can be although there are lots of movies to choose from, representing 5 "heroes" and 5 "opponents" plus scenery really reduces the number of movies that can be used.  Add to that movies that can represented properly with minis and the choices are much more difficult...I do love a good challenge.

I LOVE round 10, I had to browse through all my dvd collection members of which I had an idea it had a large battle, to find something more obscure yet not to far away from mainstream to get a hopefully unique (as in, the only one of that particular movie) entry done.

The comments about the movie theme of round 10 are really interesting.

I'd say that most of the genres we play have been reproduced in movie format at one time or another.... after all it's a predominantly visual story-telling hobby, right?  The logical follow-on then, is that most of us could probably go to our lead piles and score 5 figures for a movie scene.

What's interesting (to me anyways) is that LAFers seem to be putting a lot of effort into forumulating a scene that maximises the bonus points and really stands out, which should make for a cracking Round 10!
Title: Re: The Lead Painters' League Season 5

Round 10 is often very very cracking!

I have some ideas for round 10 and I do love thinking about it! In the meantime I finished my first entry and it's awaiting the matte treatment 8)

I don't know what to paint for round 2 yet though.

I do have some backup figures but those will only get used in dire need, possibly in later rounds.

I think we had 54 competitors in LPL3 - that's 27 matches / polls to set up every week. That's a good couple of hours work, by the time you've uploaded all the pictures and so on.
Of course I'd like everyone who wants to take part to take part. But if we seriously get 100 competitors, it's going to take some doing!  :o
My guess is we'll get more like 50 or so again though. But we'll see...  ;)

Have had a major rummage in the leadpile and massive change in painting schedule/queue or priority as the result of this.
Fortunately this coincides with a time when I'm painting up some figures for a game organised by the WD3 forum in April so I've got to paint figures anyway and those willl do for at least 3 of the rounds

But anyway, that's the first four rounds done.  I've collected the minis for the fifth round, but I think I'll get started on something else first.

Abot Round 10 Scenery bonus.

Is Colosseum a Good Bonus for last round?
In the movie Bruce Lee fight against Chuck Norriss inside Colosseum, no other member of gangs are involved, may I set a Gang Fight outside Colossuem?

Round 6: the weekend I`m in London for some tiny wargame show called Salute or something  lol

Have I lost yet?  I've painted nothing since this was announced.  It is too bad more of my 'projects' don't fit the requirement, but I thought of some non-combatants that got thrown into a trade in about 1996...  No I don't remember who manufactured or sculpted them, supposedly they ware rare and valuable.   lol

Don't forget Muskie, you can enter anything in any round. You'll miss out on 10 bonus points, that's all.´

I'm still worried I won't be able to finish the round 1 minis in time... =( One guy done, one half done and three awaiting paint.

Got another team half finished, and the round 10 minis in hand now. Also have some filler teams ready to paint which will be faster to do than the round 1 guys. Oh boy... I'm too slow for something like this.

I think I'll enter some old minis too, on the rounds where I can not get something new. Just to break repetition at least and have 10 distinct entries.

Finally! I'm now certain I'm going to be able to take part! Round One - done (except for a backdrop for the photo). Round Two - done. Round Three - OK, not done, but I have to convert a few of the models, and they'll be done pretty quickly after that. Round Four - OK, same as Round Five, but with only one conversion. But I'm getting there. Now all I have to do is learn how to photograph miniatures and keep/crop them to the required size for the competition. You may be hearing more from me as I wrestle with the camera in a couple of weeks.
Looking forward to this now!
p.s. Need to learn how to paint pinstripes and plaid as well - that's the tough part!

Otherwise it looks like they are just out for a stroll.

I'm in and will use this to drive my painting up of the mountain of HYW Perry's I bought at Salute last year.

So each team with be a separate unit based for WAB and I will alternate between providing retinues from the armies of Charles VI of France and Henry V of England from 1415.

Civilians...umm, Afrikakaka will require some lateral thinking, but the movie scene is a no brainer:

It's Sunday, day 1 of week 1 of LPL5 and I have now started painting my bunch of civilians...... according to my carefully planned schedule I anticipate submitting photos at 11:55 am next Satuday........  ;D

I'm following the very same schedule!  lol

I'm in the same boat...I hate the last minute entering but I might not have a choice for week 1..."To the paints!"
Once Week 1 is in, I should be able to relax a bit.  ::) yeah, right

I tried taking pics of my group in the morning and evening yesterday, and wasn't able to produce anything I'm content with.  I'm gonna hafta play with my camera settings and try again this afternoon.  I'm seriously trying to not make the Captain's life miserable by submitting my pics at the last minute though.  :(

It's a pity that I had to pull out, but that dirty thing called real life came in the way, and the missuss did a nice latino move on new years eve and basically broke her foot in three chunky pieces...

Anyways, my week 10 entry was supposed to be based on the Deliverance scene with some dirty male-on-male action and mammal sound effects.
Hopefully I'll do it anyways (and get banned from LAF after several complaints) :)

while buying more figs to feed the bonus rounds... ;D

Aaaah yes, it's definitly the League allright...

Well my internet service has been on the fritz for the last week. So I am limited to the time I get online at work. So I was unable to make the dead line for this years league. I wish everyone that made it in the best of luck. You will all have a little tougher competition with me not there though. No more easy wins against me this time. Have fun and I'll be watching & voting. I'm also going to keep painting as if I was still in it.

Strange, exactly the same thing happened to me.  But, if nothing else, the initial impetus has meant that I've got 20 figures pepped and primed (and 5 painted) for my long-dormant "weird ECW" project.

This week's moral: do not have a user name ending in "F"!

Have fun, everyone.

Very strange. Make that two more of us.

The same thing also happened to Mina and I... sent it several hours ago, but unfortunately we apparently didn't make the deadline. Mina was in a car accident and we spent most of the week dealing with the fallout/health issues related to that, figured we might be able to squeeze in given the circumstances.

Unfortunate, I was looking forward to participating, as was Mina. She was hoping to get more active at the forum here, too. I understand that I missed it, but I wish something could have been done to accommodate her. This was her one bright spot this week, finishing up the photo/planning what she was to do next, etc.

If anything, I would (politely) suggest that perhaps the policy about allowing people to join after round one should be revisited. I seem to recall that when I first joined you could join up to round three? Been a while, granted.

What would be the point, I ask, also politely? The LPL is announced very well in advance. The point maybe moot anyway, I think I recall that the reason is due to a limitation in the points calculation algorithm in the spreadsheet.

Fair question. For extenuating circumstances like the one I just described. I would think that being incapacitated by a car accident would be a very good reason to give someone a "by" week.

I think you're right about the points calculation algorithm - I seem to recall something about that last year.

The only auto spreed sheet available for the league cannot cope with 72 players.

Thus, I have created my own which will, overall, be a manual manipulation.

I can't say I don't mind missing out, but I understand the problems of new entries jumping in after the rounds have been set up. I have voted in all the match ups and was very impressed with all the entries. some of the match ups were very hard to make a choice. I wish everyone in this year the best of luck.

I have setup an account for each individual player for the entire league.  The spreed sheet is somewhere around 1200 lines long.  So it is all setup and hopefully all I have to do is plug in the numbers and do my sums correctly.

If anyone has any doubts about their scores, please do not hesitate to PM me.

First come, first served is one version. Gates close after 50 entries and all entries for the first round must be new. Should get people's arses in gear (including me, I would've been too late). Previous seasons' runners up and finalists should be automatically qualified (want to keep the good stuff).

It's harsh and could lead to parallelLPLs.

Finished round 2, need to sort the photo.

Round 3 is looking shaky for a new team I want to do some big stuff, might need to do a by(e) and go in strong for 4.

5 needs painting, but is chosen.

Not really any further then that, except round 10 which is in concept, but needs prepping and undercoating...

Not very good at planning!

Round 2 was photographed and sent in at the same time as round 1. For the rest of the entries I've been painting up whatever I fancied and I haven't selected which models to enter for round 3 yet. I've got some ideas for rounds 5 and 10 but both of them need to have more painting done.

I also need to finish my car for Massive Voodoo's Mad Max Car Competition (shameless plug):

Rounds two and three already mailed. Round 5 is (re)painted and round four is on the workbench. The other round are in undercoat and awaiting time to paint. Only round ten fell through because the models I wanted to order are not in stock, need to rethink that one.

I'm also getting a photoshop-kinda-thingie to alter my backgrounds of the pictures I send in. That is allowed isn't it?

Wow, so many people are actually ahead of the game!  I've got all the teams picked out, but painting isn't going so well.  Round 2 will be finished and photographed tonight (hopefully!).  Round 3 is coming along, and I'm waiting on all the mins for round 10.  I'm not sure I can keep up the pace!

The LPL is great.  I think the creativity and talent that everyone is showing is inspiring, which makes us put out better entries, which in turn inspires everyone else.  It's like a painting rube goldberg machine that churns out little painted lead figures.

Just out of morbid curiosity, how long does it take everyone on average to put together an entry?  I spend probably 2 -3 hours per figure, plus another hour on the photography, cropping emailing the entry thing.  Overall, on the two I've (almost) completed I'm spending about 10-15 hours each, which would explain why I can't seem to get ahead.  I think I'm a slow painter, but then I got thinking maybe everyone else is really taking this long too.

@Bobbo
Well, you're a faster painter then me. I can't tell you how long painting takes per figure, but my first round entry took me a week to finish. That means a couple of hours "hobbytime" each evening.

Keeping focus on one entry at a time is also a problem, I tend to paint a little bit of everything  :)

From undercoat stage, that's about my timeframe too.  Like you, I paint everything in the week before the deadline.  My round 2 entry is about to be flocked with photography first thing tomorrow morning.  Finishing so close to the deadline isn't so good for the Captain but aiming for 60-70 minis in a 10 week window is what keeps me motivated.  :)

I started painting for the league as soon as i read the "For the Love of god a new LPL please"-Thread. That explains why my first six entries are already finished.

On average i would say i manage to finish 4 minis a week. With 2-3 hours of painting effort per miniature.

My second entry was small part of a batch I painted some weeks ago (aiming for the LPL), 15 of them in maybe 3 hours. When you see my entry for the second round you will see why they paint up so fast.

Normally I take between one and three hours per model. Often I don't get to do the last (fine) details anymore before the deadline and take my picture way to quick. The LPL really forces me tho think about the amount of time I spend in this hobby.

Though while sitting at home all day due to being unemployed should give a lot of time for painting I don't get around to it as much as I did before, when I worked 40 hours in the week... A bit odd actually... ::)

Thanks for the responses.  Maybe I'm not a slow painter.  Maybe I'm an average speed painter.  I just think of myself as slow because, lets face it, painting minis isn't exactly an instant gratification type hobby.

Anyways, round 2 is in with a whole 6 hours to spare.  I'm torn between starting round 3, or just going to bed...

We have a Warhammer tournament this weekend so I'm aferaid Braxandur something like fifteen minutes to pack his stuff and leave at the time of posting ;)

It's a shame though as I would have liked to see a fresh entry, that said, I believe he fared better at day one of the tournament than I did ;)

Sorry, sit, everyhting was already packed... my last post though was sent from the home of the beter half, while the little metal men were at the other side of the town....

First day of the tournament was a lot of fun though. I honestly start to like the 8th edition more and more every time I play a game. Next week there will be defenitly be a new entry!

So Cap', what was the number of new entries for round 3...?

I have to say, there has been no drop-off in quality from round to round- If anything, people are stepping up their game as we go along. A lot of great entries and tough choices to make this round!

I have to agree! Where I thought it would get harder for peoples to maintain their high level of painting, it seems that week after week contestants are finding new ways and levels to add to their already fantastic entries!

This year LPL is absolutely amazing and I'm glad I'm part of it!

Please note that owing to certain other commitments this coming weekend, I won't be able to preload the matches on Saturday evening, so Round 4 of LPL5 is unlikely to go live until Sunday afternoon, UK time.

Would hate to think of you all clustered round your PC's from first thing Sunday morning, waiting in eager anticipation for... nothing to happen  ;)

Don't bother looking until mid-afternoon.

But yes, the deadline for replacement teams is still 12.00 GMT on Saturday.

I've been putting the final highlights on Round 4 today....and cleaning flash and mold lines from round 5...getting them ready for priming.

We are heading to the in-laws for the weekend...I tried to explain to the wife that I NEEDED to stay home to get ahead of the curve with my figures...........she didn't buy it... :'(

Oh well...I guess that means more late nights and painting during my lunch break!

Round 4 nearly done and I've just thought of a way of making it fit the African bonus round - after forking out for some stuff especially for round 5 (which I've been thinking about getting for a while anyway!) - which still hasn't arrived!!   :o

Also heading for a busy weekend which threatens to relegate painting to the backburner...  >:( >:(

Apart from that I'm finding the competition to be a very calming and rewarding experience!  lol

My round four entry was sent yesterday... lots of time to spare this time. :)

I think I'll have to admit defeat on the Africa theme in round five. I only want to do stuff that I'll be able to use for gaming later, and it's sci-fi all the way for me. Oh well, I'll make a token effort in any case. Hehe!

Round 4 is in, and I'm getting a jump on Round 5.  It's proving a little difficult since I don't like the sculpts I'm painting much, so getting through them is a chore, plus I'm going to try to paint 10 instead of just the 5.  I'm finding that round 6 is exciting me a lot more than the one that I'm supposed to be working on...  Press on I guess...

I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't finish these minis if it weren't for the league.  Actually, I know I wouldn't, since I started on some of the other mins from this set and ran out of steam half way through painting them.  One of the benefits of the league, I guess!

Nothing new from me for Round 4, I'm afraid. Getting ready for this weekend's convention sucked up my gaming time.

What was going to be my Round 4 entry will be appearing in Round 6; Round 5 will be finished on time easily, and Round 7 is nicely underway. Haven't a damn clue what I'll put in Rounds 8 & 9, and Round 10's bonus-theme figures will be purchased at the con this weekend...

Weeks 4 and 5 are in!  My Week 6 chaps are patrolling the desk in base black and a bit of skintone - very happy to be this far ahead on my painting, as I'm going to need all the time I can get for Week 10.

I have newfound respect today for those who've put in smaller scale entries.  10mm is very tricky to photograph successfully.

Yikes - major disaster - I ordered some minis last week specially for the African round and having queried why they hadn't arrived yet I've been told there is a 3-4 week delay on getting orders out!  :o

So I'm having to rejig my teams, paint a new one from scratch tonight  o_o, use the team I've nearly finished painting this week for a cheeky, tenuous link for the African round next week, along with some opponents which I'd been saving for another round entirely!!!  lol

Don't hold any grudges about said company but it might have been nice to have been notified of the delay when I placed the order - I wonder if they're run off their feet with orders from the rest of you lot buying African related stuff!  lol

Round 5 submitted, although this was a hard one.  The minis I had were crappy sculpts for the most part, plus were horrible castings which were beyond my skill to clean.  Add to that trouble getting a picture of all ten at once and a matte coat that killed the highlights on black skin and you have one heap-o'-no-paintin' fun.

On the other hand, it's behind me and I feel like I got over a hump, so hoping the rest of the league will go smoother.  I'm part way through the round 6 minis and  working on round 10 in any free time (like, when I should be sleeping) and I'm somehow now half a week ahead.  Of course, I'm away this weekend, so any buffer I've got will probably disappear after round 6.

Oh well... onward!
Panic stations!
Prepare to repel all distractions!

Let me know how that works out for you.  And what the secret is.  I think part of my problem is that my painting station is right next to the computer and I enjoy looking at other people's entries more than I enjoy painting my own.   lol

Pack your things, little miss. The orphanage is that way.

My niece used to "help" my terrain layouts when I wasn't looking by bringing in stuff from the garden and decorating the table with it. To be honest her 'landscaping' was usually an improvement on my terrain efforts.  :)

I am a stay at home day since the end of Feb (till the end of October, generous parental leave circumstances in Sweden), so the Katzenhammers have been constant companions around the workbench pretty much all the time. Can O'Beer, the littles hammer, tear everything down which is less than 30cms from the tables edge. Fivers, son of Hammers, is very enthusiastic about every entry and when he escapes my attention he plays house with scenery and miniatures. The fat guy in the asylum is a particular favorite, I've had to do touchup work on him a couple of times.

I think of commando miniature painting, sortof. Toughens you up. I should not complain though. The way things have been going so far, the kids must be bringing me some luck. :)

We have 4 cats running around the house, which thankfully haven't caused any permanent damage yet.  I've had to rebase a couple figs that mysteriously jumped off the table during the night and I've varnished a couple of cat hairs semi-permanently to a couple minis.  The most danger they pose is whenever they drink my paint water my wife threatens to kill me.

Of course, I'm expecting my first in 6 months, so this will all change.

Actually, now that I think about it, the league is good training, since I'm not getting any sleep and I'm stressed out all the time.  :)

And in one afternoon, I've got from "Oh dog LPL is going to be the death of me..." to actually having backup teams available.

Rounds 5, 6 & 7 all painted & Dullcoted. Photos tomorrow before work, editing & dispatch to the good Captain after work. It helps that they're all related projects!

Rounds 8 & 9 prepped, puttied and based, primer either this evening after work or tomorrow morning. I have a spare in-progress set of figures for one of these rounds, too.

Round 10 now has all ten figures prepped and based. Need to re-watch my chosen movie for scenery inspiration , though.

Organization appears to have happened.  :o

Managed a new team with an Africa theme but had to sacrifice the 'opponents' bonus-bonus-bonus points as had too little time (but I did sculpt the central character  :D).

I completely spaced on the extra bonus points for the African opponents. Pity, as I was in the presence of Mr. Murch last weekend and could have snagged a pack of his Seebattalion, and then (ab)used them for pulpish purposes after!

I suspect that the pace of the LPL will start to take it's toll now, fewer and fewer replacements will be submitted. I know I'm having trouble keeping up  :D

Still struggling, but I decided to update my blog with some WIP photos (http://musksminiatures.wordpress.com/2011/04/08/wip-oop-khorne-bezerkers/) as that doesn't seem to violate the rules after all.  I resubmitted my Week 1 entry so hopefully a better photo will yield better results.  I gotta pick simple models for later teams...

I huess that late entries just mean that people are running out of items they had already painted, but hadn't shown. Anyhow it's more difficult to just have some "africa" miniatures ready if you're not playing that setting.

Anxiuos to see what people did do to get the bonus points  o_o

Contestants please note. Round 6 will be the last random draw (and I've just made it!)

In rounds 7 - 10, the leading contenders for the title at the head of the field will be matched against each other to give the serious artists a serious competition  ;)

Those lower down in the league table will continue to be randomly matched.

Well gents the dies is cast
I'm off to the UK tomorrow so have submitted entries 6,7,8 & 9 as I wont get another chance :'(
Its been a bit of a frenzy as all are new though a few figures of one entry have been shown as a WIP on another forum so will not count as a new team

I'm also bringing some figures over for the WD3 forum Imaginations game, 2 of my entries will double up for that so I've managed to get through another 2 units of about 30 figs each as well as 9 LPL rounds. I am knackered and the garden's a mess o_o lol

I've had a great time though

Otherwise, if you see someone with a TSA shirt labelled `Twin linked Aldades` (really, don`t ask) and the necessary amount of scifi patches on it, that`d be me.

Just wanted to say that as a newbie voyeur to LPL5, having followed a link for Matakishi’s Tea House after the competition had started, how hugely impressed I am with all the entries and how much enjoyment I get from following the competition.

Some really classy painting, good web-chat, friendly competition and (even though I major in 15mm) loads of ideas for my figure painting.  I would have joined LPL5 if permitted by the rules and am already planning what I would enter should LPL6 ever be run.

Thanks for the ride and well done to all those doing the heavy lifting in organising LPL5 - you are doing a great job!

I know what you mean.  I started off three weeks ahead in painting thanks to some well timed vacation watching plumbers work on the house.  Down to 1 week head thanks to family, work and my really novice photography skills.  Getting better with the camera through practice though. :)

Yeah, something about getting the 10 minis painted for Round 5 lulled me into a false sense of security.  Like, "after that, everything else should be easy..."  So here I am one day before Round 6 is due with only 3 minis partially painted.  So tonight, I've got to finish the three, paint two from scratch, base and photograph.  Didn't help that I was away for the weekend and then lost two days of painting due to illness.

I might be dropping down to 15mm for this one.  At least I know that I can get the minis finished in time.  I'm sure that photographing will bring in it's own set of challenges though...
Title: Re: The Lead Painters' League Season 5
Post by: Remgain on April 15, 2011, 02:44:19 PM
Well, I can relay on a large and old collection of minis never photographed, never posted on the net and, mainly, never fielded in any game  :(
So I'm quite sure that I'll have no problem in posting 10 different entries. :D

Of course, next LPL will be very harder for me...

Anyway, I'm really having a great time and a great fun! :)

Ciao

Real world finally caught up with me, and the paint schedule (i use the term very loosely)!

Re-running teams for at least the next 2 rounds have to see for round 8, but that is also looking shakey. :(

But at least I have managed to secure a new job, so redundancy is off the cards for a bit!  :)

Good luck all, this comp has been a comparative sea of calm and tranquility for me for the past few weeks, and I am loving every moment of it.

Heh heh, thank you sir. I should to be able to get a new entry in each round. So far I've not started more than a week prior on any entry, but I'll need to start rounds 9 and 10 really soon and work on them along with 7 and 8.

LPL has been great on so many levels... it gave me a reason to paint figures I'd had laying around for years, its exposed me to miniatures I never knew existed, allowed me to interact with a really friendly gaming community, and most importantly it has shed light on how much personal time I don't have :)

Whew, Round 7 finished and shot, and another ready for a photo.  I've just started working on the figures for 10, and am seriously wondering what I've got myself into.  Looking at the daunting horde before me, I may have to dig something out of the archives for either Round 8 or 9.

And there are definitely fewer votes.  I think we peaked over 400 for most matches in Round 3 or 4.  Last round, which I would have expected to garner more interest as a theme round, was only in the low 300s.  The unfortunate side effect of this is that at 300 voters, an entry needs 50% of the vote to get full bonus points, while it can manage the same points with only about 38% at 400 votes.  Short of forcing people to vote though, there's not really any way around that.

It's school holidays in the UK so a lot of our voters might be away.

Not sure Alex has had time to send the email reminder out this round...
A couple of people have said to me that it can actually be a bit of a chore wading through 36 matches and voting...
Inconceivable I know...  ;)

Well, Captain, you and Ray are doing a wonderful job there. Thanks again for that.

Round 7 entry is in, round 10 entry is photographed but needs a little correction here and there... Unfortunately I have no idea for rounds 8 and 9... yet.

Totally agreed.

Round 7 sent, round 8 ready to photograph, round 10 painting to retouch.
Round 9... well, I have a couple of alternatives... I'll choose.

Ciao!

Round 7 is in, didn't manage to get anything 'new' painted so I used what I painted at the start of the league. My pile of new models is slowly running dry though, must paint more 8) I did get to do some model assembly yesterday but I think the rest of the weekend is packed with other plans.

My Round 7 is in, and I'm fairly pleased with it. Round 8 should be done soon, too. Beyond that, however, things are not looking good, and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get anything film-specific for round 10...

Oh, come on now.  Should be able to get at least the first 10 bonus points with just about anything!  The hard part is the scenery.  And something tells me we are going to see some realllllly interesting scenes.

Round 7 went in late last night (or this morning) as I couldn't sleep.  :)
Need to finish round one more team for 9 and get cracking on round 10. Time will tell but I might be a little too ambitious in my plan.

Title: Re: The Lead Painters' League Season 5
Post by: Captain Blood on April 24, 2011, 11:20:32 PM
Hmmm, let me see...
62 new teams entered - although 6 of these were declared as 'previously shown' so not strictly new... Still that's not bad, is it, for this stage of the competition, to have only 10 repeat entries from previous rounds?
(One of whom said all along he was going to run with one team for the whole thing, several of whom I know have had real life get in the way this week, and only two or three of whom appear to have given up the ghost altogether...  ;))

Come on all! One more heave!
Nearly home  :)

I mailed round 10 in yesterday, if it passes the judges and jury I should have managed to get to my personal `objectove` of grabbing all the available bonus points, to compensate for my lack of painting skills.

Lessons learned towards LPL 6:

* to include scenery and background
* it really is time to replace the camera with one that has a decent macro option, in order to be able to grab pics of models closer 50cm and still get them in focus
* do `something` with the pictures taken like incorporating titles and such

Aaaaah, and to try and remember these things in about a years time  lol

It's certainly getting difficult towards the end of the competition!!! I'll no longer complain about people having entries ready before the comp, having a few ready to go is diffinately a smart move!

Does anybody else think we're maybe missing an obvious bonus round theme? I know there's probably already too much in the media, but with the royal wedding coming up a round on that or even just a royal theme or wedding theme may have been good?

Try applying a layer of gloss varnish, then matt varnish again. I had the same problem with some of my "Disciples of the Red Redemption" from Round 6 and the gloss varnish removed 99% of the snow effect.

This competition has been a huge eye opener for me. It has really brought into abrupt focus how little free, personal, me-time I have. Between a wife, one-year-old, my college teaching duties, and countless other demands on my time its a wonder I got anything done at all. I told my wife's family, and mine, that when I return from New York this summer I'm not traveling for 365 days and 'too bad, so sad' if they didn't like it :)

I understand, Dr Mathias - that's the reason I had to bow out of the league - before I had even entered! I had three rounds painted too, but with college teaching, papers to grade (aaarrrrggghhh!), a wife and a one-year old baby (like you), I knew I just couldn't commit to ten weeks of painting. I'm happy that others have managed to, though, because this LPL is full of absolutely brilliant painting and modelling. I take my hat off to all of you, because it's just as much about discipline as it is about painting ability!

Sent in round 9. Unfortunately it is something old(not showed before) as
the planned one failed to show up in time. I know one company I won't order from
anymore.
Also missing models for last round and I don't think they will show (maybe not ever) up in time.
This means that I for sure will miss to take all the bonus points.

By the way. You won't get more time to paint as the kids grow older. I think the only way to do this is
to plan way ahead, but considering that I decided to enter the contest the evening before the last date.
That is not good planning.

Good luck to everyone.

Indeed, apart from having to paint the models for round 10 I don't know yet how I will have to compose my picture. Ah well, paint first, photograph later I guess.

Hammers, I'm sorry if you can't compete with new teams anymore, but you have an amazing backlog of entries from this and previous LPLs to choose your non-new teams from for the final rounds, if you really can't make it.

Now, to get started on round 10...

Wow - the league sounds such a hard slog - really don't know how everyone manages it.

It's a challenge, that's for sure, if you're going to compete with a new entry each round and chase down all the theme bonus points. But you get a lot of satisfaction from achieving it  :)

The trick is to make sure you use the notice period of (in this case nearly six weeks) to get a few teams in the bag / under your belt. After that, painting, say, five or six teams of new miniatures across the ten week period of the league becomes a reasonably manageable proposition. Although the investment of time does also rather depend on the standard of painting you're aiming for  ::)

But that thing called Real Life has a nasty habit of getting in the way - work, partners, kids, holidays, accidents, social commitments, family events and family crises... They can all derail the best-planned LPL campaign...

Only the toughest survive...  ;)

You really do need to build a buffer as soon as see the announcement and decide to give it a go.  If I hadn't had a 3 team buffer at the start thanks to a few days holiday I would have fallen off two weeks ago.  What I didn't think to do was to get a jump on week 10 earlier.   :)

Nothing new for Round 9 from me, I'm afraid. My poor ECW horse will get another chance to lose horribly to someone else.

I'm going to have to get cracking on Round 10's entry this weekend, too!

I mananged the full ten rounds of new stuff last time I did LPL, but this is the second round I've had to rerun something in. Family commitments at the end of last week, and then a cold that left me wanting about 14hrs of sleep a night instead of my usual 7 or so kind of kill off the spare time!

And round 9 is in.....

How happy am I to have finished it? Picture cheerleaders, marching bands, bunting, fireworks....  :D

What's that?  Round 10 is the real test.

Bugger!  Picture sloping shoulders, cramped claw of a hand, washed out complexion from too much time indoors, bags under eyes, the 10 cm stare.....  :o

On a serious note .... really sorry to hear that hammers won't have a new entry for Round 10 (crikes... I'm sure many of his previous could be round 10 entries.... am absolutely certain I've seen them on the big screen... or perhaps I'm becoming incresingly delusional.....).

So I got round 9 in at 4:30am est...and things were a bit rushed there at the end...the wife had just realized I wasn't in bed and came searching for me!  There it is in but I could have used another 30 min to tidy it up a bit.

Of course the kids were up at 6:00 as usual....ugh I see a nap in my future.... Then I begin the final mile...10 figures and a vehicle seem like an awful lot right now!

Cheer....zzzzzz

Bad hobby night.  Decided to prep and prime the second set of guys for the Round 10 entry.  As I was doing some weapon swaps, I dropped a mini and lost a hand that flew off somewhere.  My wife (God bless her) and I are crawling around on the floor for 10 minutes until I realize that I didn't drop the one that I thought I did and the hand that we are looking for is still attached to the mini.  The actual piece that was missing was found about 15 seconds into the search, but I was looking for something else so we kept searching.

After repairs and reassembly, I barely got the minis primed, so I'm not going to get any painting done tonight...  Bad start for the 12 I need for the end of the league...

Preparation helps you to have entries for about 7 rounds but it doesn't arm you for a row of contingencies which you can be sure will crop up.

A raging cold is certainly making these last few figures a real challenge.  :(

One thing about this contest though , it really has improved my painting time and overall quality relative to where I was at in February.

It didn't do much for reducing the lead pile as I keep seeing other great figures to buy while voting.  :)
Title: Re: The Lead Painters' League Season 5
Post by: valleyboy on May 11, 2011, 04:06:31 AM
Its been a really good experience and I've learned a lot. I've made quite a dent in the original lead pile particularly as I tried to make sure that I was completing units rather than just 5 figures, the only problem is that I bought additional figures for particular rounds so created a bit of a new one

I'm really struggling with my last entry through jetlag, I'm off today, weather is crap so cannot play golf and have got the bulk of the entry finished. I'm going to have to wait until Saturday to take pics though as I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark, problem is I'm working Sat am but luckily NZ is ahead timewise :)

I agree, this has been a great experience. I would definitely do another one, though would take a little more time to prep!

My round 10 is very much on the rocks, and I think it will end up as a re-entry, which is a big pity, as I had a good one planned, it is just the lack of time and energy for the painting that has let me down.

Anyway, I have really enjoyed the comp and seeing the entries, even managed to put up some strong ones in the early rounds!

Great fun all round.

Next year I must try harder!

Got the scenery more or less finished. Got one team just to finish basing. Half the other team are finished and would have been enough to count as a full team but I felt I needed to add to it to make the scene look right.
Also my son got Xbox live for his birthday so I have been busy playing Black Ops and Halo :D

I'll be submitting a Round 10 entry, although it won't be related to movies.  It'll probably be at the last minute, because fate seems to be conspiring against me; my brushes are on their last legs and hardly hold paint, and I ran out of Dulcote in Round 8.  But there WILL be a new entry in Round 10.   >:(

Sad to hear that Hammers. Your entries have been a real inspiration, you did great in my book!

Well, round 10 is in (not really happy with the pictures, but no time left). Have been starting to feel the pressure myself since round 4 with projects on deadlines and the wedding day taking up a lot of time. Still managed to paint 10 fresh entries, but had to cut some corners.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the entries this sunday. Again it's been great (albeit quite stressfull at times) to compete in the LPL along side everyone of you, thanks to all! Good luck in the last round! :)

Number 10 is sent in.
I can really understand all these movie makers that have no budget, little scenery,
bad special effect equipment and little time.
And I must admit that in this film 'actors' were hurt after the scenery collapsed.
One 'actor' even fell 3 meters. So any anachronistic bandages spotted is due to this
unfortunate accident (if you actually fail to spot any other anachronistic things in this production).

Good luck to everyone. Won't be able to see anything until Sunday evening.

I’m working on round ten entry at the moment. If I can’t finish in time I will need to use yet an other "old team". Anyhow, it won’t be movie related :(

Also, I was wondering if bonus for "new team" apply to round 10 or is it only the theme related bonuses that count?

Round 10 finally done and sent off. My second team should have enough recognizable figures to make up for the stand ins.  While I was looking for some more back ground figures I realized almost all of my figures have weapons.  I need to get some more civilians.

What a great job by the Captain and Ray.  Maybe we could chip in and buy them a figure or two to paint for all their effort? :D

Sadly, my entry wasn't my first or even second choice of what I wanted to do- I just didn't have time to do them justice, so I'll be eating some points :)

Starting Monday I'll be out of town on an extended landscape photography trip and I won't have internet access for over a week... so in advance: good luck to all, its been a fun, interesting, and eye-opening experience and I was glad to be a part of it!

I spent much of the morning and early afternoon painting.  Didn't exactly finish my team, but got them to the point that I could take a photo from a certain angle, hiding still-basecoated parts (::)), and sent it in.  Having played the Quar team twice, I almost met my goal of ten fresh entries. It's been a very satisfying LPL.

My thanks, of course, to Capt. Blood, Ray Rivers, and the Prof.

Thanks to Capt. Blood and Ray for their hard work and thanks to Heldrak for encouraging me to throw my hat in the ring.  I'll also have to say I'm kinda glad its over! Round 10 in, 5 characters from a movie, no new scenery piece or opposing side, but they're characters from a movie, and as a bit of a bonus, they're brand-new not-really-released-yet figures from a well-known sculptor. Awesome figures, and paint jobs I'm very happy with, even!

So I get a few bonus points, anyway.

My main goal has been reached this LPL, the yearly selection of what scale / models I would even consider continuing painting... if I struggled for 5, I won`t even bother for say 50.

A Great many thanks to `Team LAF` for organising this once again, it must be an arduous job, not to mention the nagging of all us ultra competitive professionals  lol.  Seriously, it is a great fun `competition` and eye candy has been imprinted for months to talk about again. especcially for people like me who make up the `flock` in the arena of the grand masters.  Even in defeat, one learns!

Now up to LPLVI  o_o

round 10 is just in! Wish I had more time, then I could have taken a better pic and more of a setting with my photoshop!

But it's in, it was (actually still is) fantastic and of course many many big thanks and praises to anyone who contributed something to LPL... ;)

But as always, biggest hooray for the Captain and Ray for doing a swell job at hosting this painting bonanza!!!

Fantastic work gents, I tip my hat to you guys!

I'm getting a ....

"We who are about to die, salute you"... kinda vib.   lol

Believe me, as I have been on both ends now, the real work... the Agony and the Ecstasy, if you will... comes from the competitors.

No need to thank me, I volunteered!   :o   ;)

Like all the other lurkers, I totally enjoyed seeing the great bounty of eye candy posted on this forum week after week.

For that, I thank Alex, the Prof, for hosting such a marvelous forum.  I also doof my hat to Richard, Captain Blood, for his excellent handling of the contest.

And lastly, we all know that the LPL wouldn't be what it is if it wasn't for you folks toiling at your painting desks.  So here is to all of you..

Hip hip... HOORAY!

Great job all!

And an extra Hoorah! for those that managed to make a new team for each round! :)

Its a pity that I couldn't compete this year, was really looking forward to do the pig scene from Deliverance.

What a great bunch of final entries. I'm a little surprised how few duplicate scenes there are- quite amazed really. Fantastic creativity and executions!

I think that's a pretty common reaction, Chris. You push yourself really hard for 10 weeks and then suddenly it's all over and you don't know what to do with yourself. I got a lot of housework done yesterday, myself...  ;)

A number of really nice entries and tough choices to make.

As this time of the year is the busiest then it is good that
the LPL ended now even if feels strngely empty.
It has been a pleasure to attend this event and if I have a possibility
to prepair I will try to attend some other year.

While busy with the LPL, being unemployed was actually not that bad... But there indeed seems to be a lot of excess time now...  Let's go jobhunting (and paint a few more metal/plastic) men :)

Captain and Ray, thanks very much for organizing this years LPL and putting in all the effort!

It's been a great run again guys, it was awesome to see so much creativity and eyecandy each sunday and painting a lot of miniatures in the process. Thanks to all! :)

Right it's Sunday morning, where's round eleven?....wait....what?.... What do you mean? You mean it's finished? Like over? Dam!

Only kidding! I'd like to add my thanks to all involved for running this comp. I've now ended up with a shed-load of painted miniatures. And again well done to all participants.  Next years bar has been set pretty high if it's going to equal this years!!

Still I'm somewhat reliefed I didn't take part in LPL. Not only I wouldn't have had the spare time in the last few months for painting up a new team each week; also it would have been a very tough run with all those fantastic entries that this season saw. I applaud all those LAFers who did take the plunge and contributed to a great competition.

Biggest thankyou however goes to the worthy fellows who put so much effort into organising the LPL once again. Be assured, it's highly appreciated!
