Mostly made from old boxes, cans and the obvious plastic CD towers, cheap and cheerful. Any tips for future elements would be appreciated. In the works are wire fence sections and some scatter scenery in the form of crates and barrels.
I'm slowly working up to some multi storey buildings with playable interiors.......

Looking good - love the doors in the last few shots, and there's a building with a circular/spherical element on top of a short tower that's very nicely done. Plus, painting and detailing is great - any tips on how you did it?
-
That is an EXCELLENT LOOKING Industrial chic gaming board...the minis are also VERY COOL. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Yes indeed, absolutely smashing. What did you use for the ball thing?
-
Awesome, this is the sort of stuff I want for 15mm! :(
-
Nice work. 8)
I think I will borrow the CD-tower storage tank idea for my own board :D
-
This is one of the better "cheap" terrain tables I have seen. The painting is superb and very the business. Good work.

-
I'd vaguely been thinking of juice-carton openings to use as gothic window-shapes, but you've made great use of them as airlocks.
-
:-*
Yep... looks really super.
Noticed you are using Infinity mini's. Understand having lots of terrain for cover is really important that game, though I have no experience with it.
Must admit though, if I every get back into the Sci Fi thing... Infinity is right there at the top.
Good show, mate!
-
Love the look of this table - a very effective finish. I particularly like the numbering on the buildings, it really ties them all together.
-
Love the terrain. I especially like the unified look the paint job gives them, that's very effective in pulling everything together. Nice minis too. A few ideas...hanger, landing pad, uplink tower,
BTW, how did you do the numbering?
-
Armorcast has some very nice resin can toppers so you can turn old chips and coffee cans into high tech towers... they look nice.

-
Great stuff, very futuristic. Looks like a far better version of my terrain. I'll be using this as inspiration.
-
the cd towers are inspirational. keep it up!
-
Brilliant man. Would love to see the spray and masking methods youre using on the buildings.
Well done. Very elegant.
-
Great looking space colony! Can you give us some info on how some of the pieces were made?
-
I'd never thought o use those CD spools as terrain... Nice idea. You make them look like genuine pieces of the colony. I like. What are some of the square ones made of?
-
I'd never thought o use those CD spools as terrain
I have. LOL You should see how many blanks i have here. I have a whole squad of geeks that save them for me at work. And since they go through a few a week and they have to bring the new ones to me to use it isn't hard to collect a few dozen in a short period of time. :-)

That piece looks like a small clay pot with a Christmas ornament glued on top. Nicely done!
-
Fantastic!
Amazing how a good painting job over "simple" boxes turn out to be such cool terrain pieces!
As said before that has got to be one of the best inexpense terrain pieces I've ever seen.
Cheers,
A.

I was trying to work out what they were. Of course! Obvious really lol
Very good job on this layout. You need more junk, piles of crates, building supplies etc for figures to hide behind, but it's a great place to game :-*
-
Inspirational work!!
Maybe add some of these to your plant addons?

These plastic cake trees look good once you remove the stem.
-
wow!!! i love that!
the cd towers are simply brilliant and... how did you managed to make those writings on the walls?
-
Nice. Great for low-level jungle vegetation. Do you have a URL for them?

and what aboud the polytrees? are they good with the proper turf?

Great. More Ideas for that project that keeps moving up the to do list. Got to work on LPL though.

Sorry!!! I did not see that part of the deal!!!! :'(
Think they have the equivalent on the other side of the Pond?

Ridiculous. Are they owned by Foundry :-[

Hello again.
Thanks for all the positive feedback and the tips and ideas.
How did I do it? Well, all of the smaller outhouse type buildings were based on the presentation boxes that watches come in, they’re a nice size and tend to be of a fairly sturdy construction, so over the years I’ve saved/scrounged quite a few. The taller thinner towers are based on the pressurised tins that fronton balls come in, (think funny tennis) The storage tanks are c.d. towers as stated. But not a new idea, I think I originally saw it on some infinity forum. The longer rectangular structure someone asked about is a tin some pre-prepared food came in. The structure with the sphere was an M and M dispenser from one Easter, it originally had bunny ears, nose and sun glasses. As it wisely stated in the first addition of the 40k/rogue trader rulebook, never throw anything away, hoard all the packaging your better half lets you ;)
The detailing is just bits of wire and plasticard with the additional panels cut from thin card. The doors (as spotted) are the spouts off milk and juice cartons. Of note perhaps are the ladders on some of the buildings, these are made by inserting staples of an appropriate size into the structure, once again a very useful and effective idea lifted from the infinity forums.
A couple of the boxes had texture on them that I didn’t want, and in the case of the larger structure, this was a brandy presentation box and was a bit flimsier and also painted with a shiny surface, so to remove texture, re-enforce and add the first level of panel details, the boxes were covered in masking tape.
I didn’t have any problems with the paint adhering to the C.D. cases, I just built it up in really thin coats, perhaps the gesso helps for this as by shooting it through an airbrush mixed with a medium, you get a lot more control.
All the structures were then airbrushed with a gesso undercoat, and then given another coat, but this time grey. When this was dry liquid mask was applied with a sponge. Once dry, metal areas were sprayed a dark red, once dry, more liquid mask was sponged over these areas.
The final colour was then built up with progressively lighter shades of grey, keeping the coats really thin, so that the previous coats can be seen through them. A couple of times, I gave them a coat of grey/green and beige, just to introduce some moderation into the otherwise cold/dull grey scheme.
While all this was drying, I printed out some letters and numbers in a suitable font and size, and then cut stencils from the sheets, I also cut stencils for the stripes. This is time consuming and a pain in the arse but it’s worth it to get the uniformity that’ll later tie all the pieces together. Another key factor in achieving uniformity is to paint all of the pieces at the same time. It takes longer to start to see results, but in the end saves time, paint and effort.
Once all the stencils had been painted and had dried, I added some posters that a kind and worthy LAFer had posted in one of the fall out threads, these were then abused and torn by dampening them and attacking them…. When dry I removed the liquid mask and gave everything a couple of coats of Klear to seal it all, and then applied filters with raw sienna oil paint. When everything had dried I over sprayed with light grey to make everything look a little dusty, and then sprayed first Vallejo smoke, then beige around the base of everything to grime it all up a bit. Finally I Sprayed everything with matt Varnish to take the shine off.
Phewwwww, that sounds long winded, but it really didn’t take that long.
I enclose some close ups of one of the watch boxes so you can get a better idea.

Of course, watch boxes! More ingenuity 8)
-
Great looking colony :o And very simple to make...specially for someone like me, who can't even do those "Matakishi-pattern" cork buildings everyone else does lol
-
Very nice colony you've got there. Interesting use of the milk spouts. I've used them for windows on my medieval church / dice tower, but hadn't thought of using them for doors. It works great on your sci-fi buildings! I'd better collect some more... :D

Something else I should have recognised but didn't ::)
Agreed- another great idea and free too :D
-
Could you email me those posters mate? thatbakerkid at gmail.com
I'd super appreciate it! :D Thanks for the recipe!
-
Excellent stuff - thanks for the how-to. I'll be using the techniques when I come to paint my own sci-fi stuff.
-
Great stuff. The first thing that crossed my mind was Borderlands. This table looks fantastic and its very inspirational. I will be copying a few ideas.
-
excellent!

Added some scatter terrain and wire fencing. I need to add a couple of bigger buildings, maybe a hanger and a two storey office/ accomodation/lab block, and I'm thinking of making some cork tile roads, hmmmm. What to do what to do :)

The Buddha and barricades really add flavor here. And that panda ;).
-
Awesome work. Very inspiring and so simple to source. Well done.
-
Very inspirational.
This is practical, effective, simple and BEAUTIFUL scenery anyone can be proud to own and game with.
Thanks for sharing your construction tips, and that "milk plastic lids" you use as doors is just a WONDERFUL idea. (Mmm I guess I'll have to start saving those for future use ;) ).
Keep the good work!
Best wishes.
-
Where are the future crates from? love the gate fence! Thats simply lovely. A close up would be appreciated.
-
The fences, barrels and crates really add to the set. I wanna come and play!! lol
-
@ hubbabubba: If you don't mind one more procedural question, are you using Airbrush Medium to thin the gesso?
I've never really thought it was possible to airbrush gesso, but it looks like you've proved me wrong.
-
Yep, airbrush medium, and a little h20, question of trial and error. You can avoid too much clogging in your brush by using a filter on the nozzel of your paint pot, I use a bit of an old pair of tights I stole from my girlfriend, (that'd be pantyhoes to you North Americans. ;))
-
Hubbabubba - how do you do your ground cover? I mean the dusty, sandy, hard-packed earth look you've got over the entire board. It looks fantastic, and it's exactly the sort of look I want for my Old West project. A brief outline/step-by-step/mini-tutorial/psychic data transfer would really be appreciated!
The board, by the way, is looking great. I want to do a Serenity game too, and that sort of board would be perfect for it.
-
It's just beach sand and pva, done the good ol' fashioned way.
Work in strips across the short end of the board, get a good coat of PVA on it and the pour the sand on it. work in bands like this across the whole board, (if ypu try to do it all at once some of the glue will dry out before you get the sand on.)
If you want to, you can scrape tyre tracks and the like into the sand while the glue's still wet. leave it to dry over night then brush the sand off and repeat any sections that don't have enough texture, or area where you want to build up more texture. Seal the whole thing with a thinner coat of PVA, then when dry, paint with house hold emulsion, I went for a chocolate brown base coat, and then dry brushed with sand colour, then a light biege. Then drybrush it, this the worst bit, knackers the brushers and your wrists too. When it was all good and dry, I gave it some thin washes of oil colours in different areas to add abit of variety in areas and bring out the texture.I did two 6' x 4' at the same time, only ever used the two buggers together once, still good to have the option :D
-
Thanks, Hubbabubba - makes perfect sense of course. It's just that I've played on sanded boards at my old club back in Ireland, and they were like 6' by 4' pieces of sandpaper. They'd scrape paint off a mini in a heartbeat - not to mention skin off knuckles. I think the difference with yours might be that last overall layer of PVA. I'd say it smoothes out the roughness a little, and makes the board less abrasive.
Looks like I'll be gluing and drybrushing some time soon!
Thanks again.
-
Next step, then I'm just about through with this board, although having said that I'm still tempted to add some roads and a landing pad, hmmmmmm.:D
Added these cork buildings a la http://www.matakishi.com/ (the Don)
There are two hab type blocks and a lab/workshop/warehouse area. They all stack, have removable rooves and are still waiting to have their interiors painted and furnished. Still a lot of work to go, painting inside and out, and then painting all the furnishing and interior details... yawn. Still, they're playable as is.

my likey very much !

I see you are using the Microart catwalk set - any opinions about it?
-
I see you are using the Microart catwalk set - any opinions about it?
Yeah, I think it's over priced. I bought it thinking I'd be able to take it apart and assemble it in different configurations each time I used it, but the board they've used is pretty poor quality and soon starts to fray at the edges where the parts connect. In the end I've stuck it together otherwise it'd have become un usable quite quickly.
Knowing what I know now I don't think I'd have bothered to be honest.
-
That city looks great!

A pity about the catwalk - it looked like a great idea.
-
A fantastic layout, loads of gaming potential there, just looking at it makes me want to push figures around it.
-
love it, keep going! i'm curious to see them painted!
-
Incedententally Sangenaru, I tried your concrete method on the MDF bases, looks good so far, I'll get my finger out and get it painted to see the end results, but that was a great tute you put up there, thanks again.
-
lol, thanks to you!
I shall be honoured to upload your results on my website! :) i still have to make a proper article, but i already have some other works, so i guess i'll upload all them soon! =)
cheers,
Jack

That's cracking.

The new stuff looks great. :-*

More deliciousness.
You're cranking out fantastic stuff!

Thanks for the feedfack again :)
I've got the buildings painted, now I just need to get around to all the little bits and bobs that will furnish the inside and outside.
Doors from Antenociti's.
The buildings on as a group.
The three storey on its own.
The three storey as individual units.
And a shot of the interior.
Unfortunately, the only one that nests for storage is the large lab building. In the others the interior walls are glued in place. However, I'll be able to keep all the other scatter scenery in the buildings which will be a boon.
If I were to do it again, I'd go to the trouble of adapting the dimensions so that they would nest, it's a good idea for anyone planning anything like this.
I printed out a sheet of fairley run of the mill building signs that I scavenged from various google searches. You may want to reduce it by about 10% before you use it with 28s

WOW!
Gonna copypaste your image, i think i'll use it asap! :P
PS: I LOVE your concrete pavements!!!
-
Great stuff, and nice work on sharing sir.
-
Magnificent. :-*
really love the colours and the how you're able to stack 'em into one high building.
-
Great looking stuff. The pavements look great.
-
Thanks for the signs will use them on my STALKER project.
I love this thread and will be nicking a few ideas ( the CD storage cases ). Lovely models
-
Well done, and very cool color scheme.
-
That is one really nice table, that I fully intend to rip off.....errrr........use for inspiration.
-
Upon seeing this game board, did anyone else suddenly hear Bill Paxton snivelling "Game Over, Man!"? lol
-
I took some more photos with all the gubbins on the board, I hope they're not too big. It seemed a shame to make them any smaller.

What a fantastic board! Excellent terrain - a great thread.
Keep it coming!

I got the resin bits and bobs done for the interiors, so I took some piccies.
Very basic paint on the whole, basecoat, dip, drybrush for the most part, and then just picked out the details.
Bits are from Ainsty, blackcat and Antenocities.

Now that is really lovely stuff!
-
Just have to echo what others have said, wonderful stuff sir. Just goes to prove you can have a fantastic set up (that most wargamers would love to play over) in not too big a playing area. Your 'vision' reminds me of the old saying, 'you can always spot the wargamer at the supermarket, he is the one holding the yougart pots upside down (to see what he can use them for)'.
Once again well done.
-
The resin stuff looks great. Is that it for this project or is there more to come?

Wow...the first page had me a little underwhelmed...but cripes the rest of the pages are great. That's a fantastic near-future table if I've ever seen one. Great stuff!
-
The latest bits got finished last weekend, some road sections and a landing/loading area.
In the end I dicided to make the roads out of cork tile, as they kinda look like a rough tarmac surface, and you can rip them up to get a cracking effect.
These were then painted with a sponge. The straight sections are cut in the middle at 30º so they can be put down at an angle or used to create corners.
The landing/loading area is done as per Sangennaru's tute mentioned ealier. (thanks once again, it's proved itself to be invaluable...)
Anyway, I got all the gubbins out this afternoon to see what it looked like. I'm pleased with the results.
The roads seem to add something that was missing before.
Put a few survivors down who are about to be overrun by the zed menace...

Wow, simply an amazing table set up! Fantastic stuff.
-
looking mighty fine.
:-* :-* :-*
-
Agreed - very nice table - impressive. :)
-
That is one nice setup!
-
Looking fantastic. In the last two photos there's a flying machine on a landingpad. What is that? Is the one from Avatar?

It's a "Terminator HunterKiller", a kids toy which came during "Terminator Salvation".
Nice modell

Brilliant looking table. I love the roads.
Is there any more terrain planned?

I've got a scratched up sat. dish to paint, and I'm toying with the idea of a control tower/uplink tower, but I dunno, could be a while.
Thanks for the positive feedback folks. :D
-
Just fantastic! :o
-
Finally got around to painting the uplink dish that I built after being inspired by Zafarelli´s excellent uplink tower, what seems like years ago.
Anyway, here are the pics

great scenery, as the rest of the table! :)

I made a new base board using jack's method of scribing MDF.
(http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m188/son_of_stephen/newboard002_zps0ea5b826.jpg) (http://s104.photobucket.com/user/son_of_stephen/media/newboard002_zps0ea5b826.jpg.html)
My motivation was two fold:
Firstly, the big 6x4 boards I've got are a bit of a hassle to get out and put away. I already had the two pieces of MDF I needed as they were the off cuts from the two larger desert/waste land boards.
Secondly, I have an evil plan to make a dungeon/maze labyrinth interior board. My thoughts were to keep this new board fairly simple and generic so that by just using different wall sections i'll be able to use it for SC-fi shoot 'em up style interior actions, and also for some fantasy dungeon crawl action should I ever finally get around to painting up some of my fantasy stuff.
Anyhow, here are some photos from this mornings game of infinity, using the new board with my existing scenery.
The valient nomads, (played by myself) were fending off an incursion by some filthy thieving Ariadnos, (played by Carlos.)
In the first encounter, the Nomads successfully eliminated the encroaching Ariadnos, eliminating all of them. We played the Cuadrant control mission from the current ITS missions.
However, in the second encounter of the morning, The nomad team was tasked with recovering some scattered supplies, and in this second encounter Carlos's troops handed my arse to me on a platter, eliminating all but my trusty Sin eater, while his own losses were minimal.

Looks fantastic and immediately made me think of PC game Black Ops 2 :)
-
Lovely looking table and scenery :-* :-* :-*
-
Compliments your scenery nicely. Jack's how to was great, personally used it to good effect on my little halo board and will use it again. Nice touch with the different concrete tones.
-
Wow! I'm glad you used my method, and honestly i should finish my table too... basically, i'm doing the same as you did! ^_^
-
Ah, by the way, i just did a new one for concrete buildings! Maybe it worth a try too? :)

Yeah well, not the most useful comment but I haven't much else to say either.

This thread has been dormant for over 4 years!
I thought I'd resurrect it as firstly i've got a few bis to add, and secondly, it seems all the photobucket links are active again. (could somebody please confirm this please?)
Anyway, here's the new bits. (props to Anpu for the colour scheme inspiration.):

You'll have to excuse the masking tape on the windows of the Arvus. All these photos were taken prior to varnishing, there may be more to follow of the final article.

Nice painting on those.
Who makes the APCs?

Nice from me too!
And also, where are the 6 wheeled APC from???
I love them, there are so multisystem useful!

Nice painting on those.
Who makes the APCs?
My reaction and question exactly.

The 6 wheelers are from fenris games.
Thanks for the feedback gents.

Great to see you still working on this. All the pictures seem to be fine, so giessing that photobucket realised they made a mistake.

Glad you've brought it back, I missed it the first time round 8)

2 Revell snapfits and a tarted up and repainted Avengers' Quinjet
-
Love that quinjet!!
-
Nicely done 8)
-
Is the quinjet a toy?
-
You've done a lovely job on that Quinjet. I've got one sitting in a box waiting for me to get around to it, and yours is mighty fine inspiration. I like what you've done removing the rear bit of the wings and the lift fans.
I like your A Wings too - I can see one of them working (minus the guns) as a one or two-seat racing yacht. (I assume that's a 28mm figure for scale?)
Is the quinjet a toy?
Yes, it's a toy - quite a big beasty. They crop up on eBay from time to time; play around with your search terms as sellers sometimes don't use the geekily correct terminology - I got mine for a bargain because it was misnamed and no one else found it to bid on.
-
Lovely stuff! The Quinjet looks fab!
-
Love that quinjet!!
Totally agree.

Some Sci fy walls I've knocked up to go with a play mat, I'm pretty happy with them, what do you folks think?

Yeah, they're a redux of these ones:

I like those walls. Are you planning some doors?
I'll be using the mantic and Antenocitie's doors that I painted up for that same modular interior board. I just made some new walls because I wanted some that would work with the deep cut mat, primarily motivated by one of the Stargrave scenarios.
Funny how Joseph's games motivate me to produce scenery and figures I hadn't previously considered., I think that's what I like so much about them. Even funnier is the fact that I very rarely play any games any more lol
Here's a couple of pics with the doors. I produced the walls thinking I'd use the frames, hence they're cut to a specific length to go across the 3x3 mat as per the scenario, but truth is I prefer them without the frame. What do you think?

As always, although I may forget to say so, thanks for the feedback. :)
-
Stellar paintjob - they honestly look real. Great work!
-
Those walls fit very nicely with the matt, and have just the right level of extra detail to catch the eye's interest without distracting from the actual gameable space.
I agree that the frameless doors look more appealing, and if you're not actually gaming that much with them that's the biggest consideration! From a gaming point of view, though, I suspect I'd like the frame as its extra height makes the layout and routes around the board just that little clear when standing over it all. Then again, perhaps it's better to have a little bit more of a fog of war effect.
-
Those walls look great 8)
-
Great looking terrain!
-
Thanks for the comments all.
I've bashed out some GeeDubyee bits to set up some of the Stargrave scenarios and give me some more options for FiveParsecs.
Tubes and bits from one of the second season Kill team boxes, that I think were originally available as some Mechanicus bits and bobs, and a couple of bits from Kill team into the dark.
They're quite nice pieces if you can get over all the 'Skullz t.m.' and the ever present Punch and Judy 'Grim Darkyness', but whatever.
Couple of coats with the airbrush and then lots of fun playing with 'Dirtydown' rust. Pretty happy with the turn around, what's your verdict.

Yeah, that looks quite good, with the consistent painting. I hardly even notice the skulls! It looks like a great table to play on, visually appealing and not over-cluttered.
-
Agreed, the skulls don’t stand out, the whole table looks great!
-
Again, great looking table!
-
awesome looking table Hubba nice one!
-
Great stuff! You did a good job making them look realistic, but without going overboard and down the rabbit hole of painting every bolt. :-*
