Title: Spaceship X 3D terrain
Post by: digimortal on February 18, 2011, 04:12:44 AM
Just saw this on TGN looks pretty awesome http://www.creativegamescapes.dreamhosters.com/.  I'm surprised it took this long for a product like this to be released.  Looks like it's going to be supported with expansions also.

I was looking at that last night. Looks awesome. Just wish there were more rooms in the set, or that you could buy the rooms separately.

I will be having some of those at some point.  Cheers for posting that.

Very awesome! It is a bit low on rooms for non-Space Hulk games as the trojan bunny pointed out, maybe they'll be released separately later on 8)

Am I reading that right? It says it's 44.45 mm squares, which would fit the 1.5 inch Heroclix bases right? This might be a cheaper alternative than buying the overly inflated prices on the old MK:D 3D dungeon tile sets

A bit on the pricey side if you want more than two rooms.

Mr Mighty, having a look at the sprues It looks like you could convert corridors in to rooms without too much hassle, although I have to agree that it is a little expensive still.

It is a nice set, feels a bit too space hulk focused for me, but I would still have a set or two!

Might suit a Fallout vault type thing as well!

HeroClix will fit quite nicely, as 1.5 inch is only 38 mm. I'm building my own Space Hulk set using Hirst Arts blocks, but if I hadn't started with that some years ago, I just might have tried this - in a way it's such an obvious product!

I'll be sticking with my paper & foamboard Space Hulk, made of Stones Edges' orbital kit.  :)
you can find pics of it on my FB page :

Looks great! Lightweight and way cheaper, I guess!

they are awesome, and i already linked them to my scifi fan friend.

but i don't understand why is so hard to make this kind of sets. i can use a bit 3d modelling programs, and you can manage to make a model like this in a few days.

why don't they invest a bit more to make more and more sprues? :)

I have heard from two different sources in industry that terrain simply doesn't sell well, requiring high pricing for the few sales or a dedicated loss-leader.  I don't understand.  I enjoy kits like the Platformer, Hexagon, ChemPlant, etc.

I don't go for the huge FW domed colony though.  I would think that simple, vac-formed space opera walls and floors would do well.

Right on both accounts. Only takes up some space - my complete space hulk game is stored in 2 plastic boxes of approx. 75l.
Although, I haven't made all expansion pieces.
someday...  ::)

Another reason is because molds for plastics are really expensive. It's like the sculpting and mold-making budget for everything we've produced so far just to make one set of molds.

I think I'm going to order a set, but it's just too plain for my tastes. I hope they do some room filler and different floor textures in the future. Some kind of pro-grip tiled floors and walls with pipes/conduits/bulkheads like an actual ship would be more my thing.

Why don't they make more sprues?

The short answer I learned when Target Games went into producing minis for the various Mutant Chronicles games in the 90's is as follows. (I worked as an editor at that company for some years.)

Sculpting a master for either plastic or metal has a relatively low initial cost. Making a mold for metal is also comparatively cheap, but as soon as you have the molds you produce the minis practically by hand - you can only cast a small number of figures per day. It's fairly easy to recover the production costs, as you don't really need to sell a ton of figures. This is why smaller companies can afford to produce and market lead miniatures.

Cutting the tools for a plastic sprue is (or at least was in the 90's) very expensive, and this is the major cost when producing plastic minis. Once the tools are complete you can use them to produce huge numbers of sprues, and each individual sprue is ultra cheap in itself to produce, but you need to sell a really large amount of plastic in order to recover the cost of the tooling.

If anything remarkable has happened within the production of lead and plastic minis, please feel free to update me on the subject!

i think that now is quite the same: a plastic mould i heard is about 2000 bucks per sprue, which is quite a lot of money, but not SO much.

I remember a few years ago watching a documentary on Airfix. They used to budget £1000 per piece on a sprue to estimate the costs, this was a few years ago and I believe that this is a little cheaper these days but I doubt it's that much ....

Have you seen how many components are on the victrix sprues? They must cost a fortune.

There are two methods for moulding injection plastic:

steel moulds as used by Airfix(and the Perries) which cost up to £100k but last forever.

Aluminum moulds (as used by Victrix) which cost around £10k but have a limited life span.

Producing a set of 4 sprues like this you are looking at a fair investment, way more than $2000 a sprue...
