Title: Pulp Insanity in progress. 3 new pulp projects.
Post by: Ironworker on September 29, 2007, 06:49:29 AM
Well I've got 3 new Pulp projects in the works for the next week.  First up is a massivly pulpy armored car built around a Rourke's Command Car toy from Disney's Atlantis.  I was inspired to get this toy by this excellent conversion by Michael Immig:

Dr. Kentucky Brown's Archaeologist Car  (http://"http://www.backofbeyond.de/gallery_guests_michael_immig_archaeologist_car.html")

However after I got the toy in my mits I decided to make it into a very large armored car instead with a turret on top and side sponsons with guns.  I plan to paint it dark grey and make varous flags to hang off it so I can use it for different groups.  I also plan to totally enclose the cab and add small view slits instead of a windshield.  Here is a pic of the car straight from the package.

And my favorite feature!  It screws apart wich I feel is very important for converting toys to game models.

This really is quite a large car.  It dwarfs the Sarge's Truck but I think when it's bristling with machine guns it will really look good.

Also on my table are some Dangerous Dames from Bob Murch's Pulp Figures

These gals are going to get some fairly quick but clean paint jobs.  I plan to have them all done in a week.

Finally we have the legendary inhabitants of The Temple of the Golden Frog for my upcomming pulp adventure game "Sky Pirates and the Temple of the Golden Frog".

It's the sort of insanity we should all succumb to!

This all looks very intriguing & I'll certainly look forward to seeing it all finished.

Who makes the frog-creatures, BTW?

Cheers,
Ian

The frogs are made by Reaper.  I actually came up with a large list of minis made by reaper that could work for pulp gameing.  Mostly monsters but they have a few nice Arabian themed minis as well.  The same could probably be said of any of the larger fantasy companies.

'Who makes the frog-creatures, BTW?'

Ribbit! Ribbit! What a wonderful idea for a Pulp Adventure setting ~ beats natives, dinosaurs and giant apes for originality.

I'm not sure who makes the ones in the photo but Eureka/Fighting 15s have Frogs and Terrapins as well as many other creatures suitable for Pulp games.

I picked up a couple packs of those frogmen awhile back, figured they would make good dwellers for the swamp/jungle I have been working on lately.  Skrapwelder, I am simply amazed by the output from your workbench, always great stuff.  I showed the Sarge and his truck to the little woman and she thought it was great!  You have trans-gender appeal, and in a non-gaming(albeit supportive) pre-spouse( the wedding is in December).

I'm very interested to see what you will do with that nice toy, Ironworker. Here's what I did:

Ok I had just enough time over my lunch break to put the base colors on one of the Dangerous Dames.

Lady Jane
(http://pinphoto.tripod.com/natesmiscpics/jane01.jpg)

I also added a dark brown wash that isn't dry yet.

Ok for some reason I didn't get a picture of the mini with a dry wash only.  After work I had about 15 minutes to paint while waiting for my daughter to get home.  I highlighted her tunic and pants.

After that I took my daughter to a doctors appointment.

When I got back I had about a half and hour to paint before dinner.  I highlighted her belt scabbard and boots then here hair in that time.

I should be able to finish her later on tonight when I go back to my studio for a late night session.

Well I got to the studio about midnight last night and put another 30-45 minutes in on Lady Jane.  I finished her skin tones, rifle, and hat.  Now I mostly have some clean up and base work to do.  I was going to do it last night but I decided not to stay late after all and came home.  I usually make the biggest mistakes when I paint tired and I was beat last night so I threw in the towl early.

I also started two of the other ladies.

Did a little work at lunch break and got back on it after work.  Since I've shown these methods a few times I'm skipping steps with the photography as it's slowing me down just a bit.

Here is another one with a basecoat.

Two with washes.  Some how I managed to skip the basecoat shot on the gal with the blue skirt.  I added a bit too much future to the wash and came out really shiney but it still did it's job.

A couple mostly done shots of the blue skirt dame.  that shadow around her nose isn't so pronounced on the model.  Not sure if it looks worse because of the shine or what.  I think I may re-touch it a bit though before I finish her base and matt seal her.

I highlighted real loosly on her.  She doesn't have much detail at all which makes her a real nice speed paint.  I don't know how much time exactly I have in this one but I would say around two hours give or take.

Yes, this is turning into a great little "pseudo-tutorial".

It's always good to see how talented painters work, I'd like to see more of this from the members of the Lead Painters League.

Cheers,

Well I finished up the other girl today but I forgot her buckle so I gotta get that tomorrow.  Hopefully tomorrow I'll have time to finish the last two Dames and get all their bases done.

Again she's kinda shiney because I got a bit too much future in the wash but she will flaten out just fine with a matte coat.

I'd like to say I was going to do the Armored car next but I've got to start on My French Foreign Legion squad for a contest I am in and they are due at the end of next week.  At least I got them cleaned up and based today.

I've started on the Lady Pilot.  One thing I did on her hat I also did on the first lady with the rifle was I decided to paint her outfit up in entirely one color.  This also helps speed things up if the miniature is apropriately dressed or equipped.

Got the wash on the lady pilot tonight.  I'll have to try and finish her tomorrow morning.  I would have finished her tonight but I had to take some time to prep my Foreign Legion.
