Title: Pirate Adventure... A new house enters the stage.. ehh the habour Pics inside :)
Post by: Galland on March 11, 2011, 04:43:12 PM
I made a post earlier about our little pirate game campaign that we where thinking of starting up. We got hold of some rules set, and decided to use Legends of the High Seas, at least initially, until Black Scorpion releases their Cutlass! wich seems to be something more in line with what we want to play. We have also been thinking about using the Mordheim rules, since it is still a very nice and fun game.

However... we wanted to have a full weekend of building and painting, and hence invited a few friends over (girlfriend and baby girl are away), prepared meat for to be grilled and a suitable amount of tropical fruits and freshly baked bread... hiaarrr!

My girlfriend fixed up a Welcome Flag :D

Me... my right arm... yes I like pirates, hehe (my girlfriend have the same tatoo on her upper left arm). I am resting my arm on a link to a Panzer IV, it was recovered in Estonia

More progress on the ship, and the beginning of a Skull Island gaming board

I will post more pics when we get somewhere on the gaming tables!

Its a nice little mini event here hehe. Six guys and loads of building, painting and watching pirate movies all night long :D

Thank you sir, but the Indian hat is not mine, its Kalles, he just became a member of the forum by the way... finaly one might say hehe.

Some more progress... between the eating and watching movies, cutting up the skull to prepare it to become a pirate cave on my little island. We are planning 4 60cmX60cm tables, and then one 120cmX60cm. All the smaller ones will belong to the players, and will be used for smaller encounters and scenarios, representing our small private pirate islands in the campaign. The larger one will be the main habour and pirate town.

Ohoy!

It was great fun, and certainly very productive. We managed to get hold of most of the materials we needed, and could start the work on some of the smaller board.

I love the pirates I bought from you, they are, to say the least super nice, as we say in old Svedala. It inspired me to get all the rest of the Black Scorpion undead pirates, and a bunch of the others. We got two NPC gangs as well.

We got our MDF today... unfortunatly we have to cut them up again, since they are not quite in the dimensions that we wanted them :S
However, even though is a small issue, it did steal a whole day of building our smaller 60cm X 60cm tables. Tomorrow its a tour in the city, to find suitable resin for water related stuff.

Both Wentzells and Material sells the the stuff, Woodland Scienics and Vallejo. May I suggest that you consider paint, gloss coat and  glue gun for choppy seas with  short waves?

We are aware of those products, and I have some of it at home, however, for larger areas of water two part resin is to be considered, especially if you want a few cm of water. I would like to add some debris and perhaps a shark to the water, hence the need for some depth.

Got some nifty little skull and crossed bones neclace jewelry stuff today, perfect for making banner tops or putting on the aft of the boat as decoration.

It is indeed Games Workshops "Chapel". Its a sort of nice building, but waaaaaaaaaaaay too much deathskulls and other later style warhammer perephernalia. I have however taken away the better part of the most offending stuff, to make it less warhammerish and more generic. I have also made some addons to it, that will further illusion of a slightly different house. I am not done yet, I will open up one of the walls and add a hatch with a canvas awning to make it look like a small business.

The Stug IIIG is from Bolt Action Miniatures (1/56 scale), a quite nice model. It is a "gaming" model and not a super modelers dream, but quite nice anyway.

@ Hammers

I have now been working a lot on this house, and I can tell you that if you buy it and build it as is, for wargaming, like warhammer fantasy, its fine I suppose. However, for wargaming in a skirmish enviroment, where you want to enter the building, I think that the work involved with getting it to a adequate level of detail and to be at least not anoyingly ugly, its not a good building what so ever. There is no interior, so you have to make new inner walls, new floor and a new upper floor, because there is none in the kit. It is simply not worth the effort. You will be much better off with just bying some foamcore and scratchbuild it, its easier and takes less effort. The only thing that is nice, is the fact that the roof is okay, so you dont have to make that part your self. But then, I am sure that bying a more expensive kit would be preferable anyway, like Wargaming World or something.
I primarely wanted this house becuase of the availability, the relative cheap price, to get some diversity with the various buildings... but I didnt foresee the amount of work involved though.

Hehe, Kalles rope adventures have given us all a good time, a plethora of known and unknown swear words, ranging from threatening the devil with the unspeakable to more normal cries for help, however there is hope.

Progress, cutting the foamboards today or tomorrow, for the basic layout of the habour, making a mould for the paving and assembly of some newly arriwed model buildings. One problem with using stuff from Tabletop-world, is that it sort of sets the standard a bit to high when it come to scratch building stuff, at least for me.

Galland, very nice project! The ship, boat, and building are looking good.

Is your pirate adventure set in Europe, the Carribean, or elsewhere?  Are you aiming to do a British, Dutch, Swedish, or Danish town first?

If your group gets around to doing a Spanish style town, there is a line of buildings sold by Brigade Games in the USA that look pretty good:

http://www.brigadegames.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=BGAHSL&Category_Code=BGHT

There is a nice Spanish wall set from Kobblestone, though it's pretty expensive.

For elements of your campaign, the GURPS Swashbuckler book has a lot of good stuff, regardless of whatever rules you are using.  The Savage Worlds Pirates of the Carribean book also has some good elements for a campaign, regardless of whichever rules you are using.  Both those books are worth the money, I think.

Another potentially good tool for a pirate campaign is the new boardgame Merchants & Marauders from Z-Man Games.  It has a nice map, nice little plastic ships, and some excellent mission and rumor cards.

Heya

Our first idea was to make a spanish looking caribbean style island port town. However, most of the guys in our gaming group are in to Mordheim, and hence the style we will go for is a bit more adopted to the warhammerish lore and style of buildings. In the warhammer world Tortuga, or its lore and style rather, is made in to an island called Sartosa.
We will opt for a island habour town, with a very Hollywoodian style and flair, and without any sort of consern for what will be historicaly correct. We will gladly and happily mix european 16-17th century style buildings with the carribean style, depending on mood and taste that particulary day.
I have done some research, perhaps not enough to justify a magister in carribean arcitectural history, but adequate for our little pirate project, and so far, I have realized that most of the buildings of the period, especially the earlier one, are very european in their style, but adopted to the local availability of materials. Even though, one must keep in mind, that quite a lot of stuff was imported. Prefab as well as raw materials. Something that is also true to the european market during this time period.
When it comes to the nationality of a specific town in the carribean, they have behaved a bit differently than the mainland counterparts in Europa. Most of them have changed hands so many times, that its hard to actually give them a national description. Some of them where even built by criminals and pirates. The building styles have been mixed without consern for estethic or national rules, all in the name of diversity and personal taste. Just the way we want it, hehe.
As I have said before, we will primarely be using the following rules: Legends of the High Seas, Cutlass!, Mordheim and if we get hold of them, a privatly made rules set from one of our members of these boards. We will also take a look at Gloire and the supplement Under the black Flag.
Inspiration comes from many sources....

In the end I think we will be using Mordheim (with its Sartosa addon, available on the net), Cutlass! or Legends of the High Seas, but... we will make our own campaing rules, since the existing ones are not what we want or are looking for. I think that we will take a month this summer and do some sketching.

Hehe, we all collect stuff that interest us, and for me its WWII, Star Wars, Pirates and Landsknechte. I also have a very soft spot for Tintin.

Hmm the map comes from a game I think, its made by a person named Stephen Walsh, and it might come from Run Out The Guns rpg.

Finaly, the first part of our pirate table is ready for the layout of the housing and such, and will be painted and also receive some basic ground work.

It needs one more layer of paint, a layer of varnish and will then be ready for drybrushwork, detailing and the adding of the housing and other things that will be permanently added to the layout.

A small update... the first layers of paint have been aplied. The blue of the water looks strange on the picture, but actually looks better in reality. Aditional drybrushing will be done tomorrow on the stonework, along with some groundwork. We will wait with the resin for the water until later, when all painting and groundwork are done. Lots of scribling is to be done *cracks whip and gives co-conspirators a evil grin* :D

Ah, they joys of HirstArts! Did you get into that Lego-trance as you were building the dock?

Oh I left that part of the building to my minions. I am more of a supervisor. I have been casting and building some, but most of it is actually done by LB and some by Evanion. I build houses, so does Kalle and Evanion. I also do most of the painting at the moment.

Galland  - what is the arched 'pipe' coming off the little drum shaped island. I have been puzzling about it but can come up with nothing.

Looking like this will be really something when completed if these early stages are indicative.

I am going to go ahead and guess, I think is a rock with a arch to the side like sea rocks sometimes have. The top of the island is black as there will be a Lighthouse added.

When we started this project, I was browsing these pages and all its fantastic stuff. Among the uber cool things I found, I saw a couple of really nice game markers, feeling the inspiration I made these, Kalle made one of them, but I painted it as well. I am not a great painter, but these where both fun to make and to paint... they are made from foam, old GW bits and some creative greenstuff work.

I love tokens of this kind. Usually too lazy to make them and go with printed counters, but they are such fun to do, and really enhance the table.

Hehe, thanks, as I said before I am not really to be considered a painter at all, considering the talent on these boards.
The funny thing about the shield is that I got the inspiration from a picture of a find that was made in Latvia, where a German WWII helmet was found slightly burried, and under a bush. I have pictures of that... and I also own the helmet :)

Here is some work on a naval cannon made from stuff plus an old GW cannon. Kalle is the maritime fetishist...

This house was scratchbuilt by Kalle and painted by moi (same goes for the other stuff really). The other house is a GW house that we built, then converted for skirmish gaming, repaint and adding some rudimentary interior. We have however decided not to use it for now, and instead try to stick with the current building style that Kalle have developed. This is his first scratchbuilt house :)
The statue is, of course, the famous Imperial Explorer Escudero Fiasco Da Gama!

I have been away for nearly two weeks. And when I got home to Galland today, I noticed another awesome building that have yet to be revealed. But, then again ... we do need to keep some secrets for SLAM. ;)
The level of detail that have gone in to the buildings is astounding! For instance, in the fireplace on the first floor, there is a hook for the kettle that you can swing out.

Bah its no secret hehe. Next up is the Pilots (lotse) building and after that we will do the L'azzurro Arance, the local whore house. Third in the list is a merchants house with a ware house attached to it, or something like it at least.

Can we get a tutorial on those buildings...
Title: Re: Pirate Adventure... the beginning and a nice weekend with the gang
Post by: Galland on May 08, 2011, 09:57:45 AM
*Cough*

Well a tutorial is what we would like to have hehe. Since this is the first house we ever made from scratch. But it should be mentioned that we have been building wargame veichles and the like for many moons, so we are not unfamiliar with scratchbuilding as a concept, or conversions for that matter. The benefits of being Space Orc players :D

However, we primarely used what we know have been the staple material for this kind of modeling for a long time, foamcore for the exterior and interior inner walls and foamcore cut in half for the outer stone work. Primarely 3mm foamcore, but would use 5mm where appropiate. We then covered them with a thin layer of moddeling paste to give some structure and rough finish, and also to represent the filling material. I think however, that we will try to cover the cut foamcore and other materials with a different medium than airbrushing them with thin black primer, and try to go for a thicker colour, perhaps vinyl colour, to get rid of some of the surface roughness. We are still working on that part, and are trying to achive better results with upcoming buildings.

On same parts of the stone work, on the wall attached to the GW house for instance, we used 3mm depron. Very nice material, super for making walls, cobblestone, pavements, walls, brickwork, or what ever surface you fancy.

The pillars or supports are made of cut styrodur (floor isolation, in this case it was some sort of yellow type).
Roof is made from foamcore with added strips of cut lengths of cardboard (we used all kinds, what ever we had at hand, but that was of the same thickness). Styrodur is, as Kalle sayes, magical. You can cut it to look about as anything in a old building.

The windows are made from cut cardboard, and then we covered the back with insect net (bought very cheaply in a conveniance store). All made in Wolfgang style.

We have tried to keep the houses as simple as possible, with very few details added, to save time and effort, but still yeild a pleasant and belivable gaming enviroment. We will add furniture and the like when we have time, but for now, its really enough if there are a few central items to represent a "living" area in the houses.

When we are done with this pirate boards, we will start on a new project, and this have pretty much been the trial and error testground for that. We learn from our misstakes as we go along. Also painting and other techniques have been developing a bit. The greatest lesson have been the discovery of materials and how they work, and what can be made out of it, considering our limited skill and experiece.

We have spent many hours looking at other peoples work, picking up little tips here and there, and have tried to apply that to our own stuff.

I would recomend the Workbench area, its fantastic, also the Swashbuckling section. Loads of inspiration here. Another tip is Chianty´s Wargames Blog, its my absolute favourite.

Hehe, the fleet is dormant... waiting for the evil powers to disapear, so they can go back to bananas, rum and carribean gurlz.

We are primarely working on the tables for now, and will concentrate on the ships a bit later. Some smaller vessels are being done at the same time as the buildings though, and I have actually started on my Black Pearl, but dont tell the other guys in our project ;-)

We have had another very nice pirate building weekend so far, today it was BBQ in the garden and loads of building. A bunch showed up and helped out with various tidious work, cutting paper strips, planking and such, wich is time consuming and steals very important building time. If not, I would say that the social aspect is of great value as well of course, lots of gaming bullshit and good eating.
I will post some pictures tomorrow of the lastest building that is near completion.

Awesome, btw guys, a tip is to include fishnets in the terrain. Either as fishnet piles in the harbor or hanging from one side of some shack.

Easily done by taking mosqito net (myggnät) cut it out in desired size and shape, put it in a small container where you have a mix of PVA glue and some ink to make it brown and stir the net with the mixture. Then just apply it to some surface. Looks like this when done:

Thank you ladies and gentlemen, your comments are much welcome. Any kind of critique and helpful tips are also welcome, we are still in a learning process here.

The compass floor was made by scribling to 3mm depron, then airbrushed black and painted in a mix with blue/black, khaki and some sort of red (I cant remember wich one). Drybrushed with various grey colours.

The only thing that are not scratchbuilt are: 3 x Goblin Shields, 1 x Warhammer Empire Shield and 2 x embossed windows (wich I am not sure why we used, but they are there).

We made a desition to exclude the GW building (and all other bought model houses, no matter how beutiful they are), since it didnt go along very well with the scratchbuilt stuff. Its better to strive for a uniform consistency, as far as we are conserned at least, to achive some sort of esthetic appeal.
We will use all the Tabletop-World and other bought houses on our next project, wich will be a warhammer village, and on that table use primarely scratchbuilt city walls and other stuff, but once again try to keep the buildings in the same style.

Our next house is the tavern/light brigade workhouse :-P
It will be built in almost the same style, continuing to use improved style for scribling and cutting walls. We will also incorporate some other techniques that we have picked up and are trying out, especially for wood planking and such. I hope that the next house will be equally appreciated! :)

We got dragged in to a contest in the Stockholm Games Workshop, while we where visiting to show off the house to one of the emplyees that we know, and since they had that contest going, their manager thought that we should enter it, despite there not being a category for houses. He simply decided it was a "diorama" hehe. We came in second place, despite the house not even being finished at the time :D

But we have started to work with casting smaller stuff, and I hope that we will be able to make some great resin houses in the future.

Wow! Who is your sculptor?

that would be the guy in the cap in one of the pictures early on in the thread. His work is First class!

Nice to see that Galland's and Kalle's hard work have inspired other people to create stunning structures: other thread (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30365.0).

Very nice looking gameboard. Very characterful.

What did you use for, or where did you get your palm trees from?

Thanks
Scott
