Title: Quar on Venus: More airship pics added May 22: pg4.
Post by: Laughing Ferret on March 15, 2011, 07:48:37 PM
Longtime lurker on this forum, first time showing something.

I've joined in a campaign for Venus, and decided to run Quar.  The Quar come from Phobos in this setting, and I've done some background fluff if you're partial to such things  ;)  I also figured it was the perfect motivation to finally paint my Quar! I'm mostly using Royalist Quar since their uniforms fit a bit better into a VSF setting I think.

I finished painting a walker automaton, converted from a Star Wars mini:

and have some other conversions waiting to be painted, such as this 6pounder attack walker & a light gatling walker:

First sighting by the Imperialists from Earth:
But it won't be their last...

I have some of the conversion process for them & fluff here: http://laughingferret.blogspot.com/ (http://laughingferret.blogspot.com/)

WELCOME ABOARD! That's a FINE way of introducing yourself. There's something about the Quar that really appeals to moi; your Walkers are a splendid addition to the Lads.

After the Imperialist Forces see them coming, then, you will be able to ask "who's laughing now?"   ;)

The Royal Cytherian trading company welcomes the Dezinens of Phobos.  We look forward to a mutually profitable arangement.  Mind you don't get to close to those parrotmen, nor should you stand to close to that Vickers.  The crew is a bit trigger happy.

Every once in awhile... Okay, ALL THE TIME, one has a moment of forehead meeting the palm of your hand. 'Oh, that model as a two-legged walker...' *thunk*  lol

Well done on seeing things anew, and such a well done conversion of that vision!

I've always hoped I might get some motivation by sheer osmosis on this forum. You've renewed that hope, former lurker. Keep it up.

thanks everyone, happy to be here and happy to put some pictures up as things progress.

I got a couple toys that I'll be turning into flyers next in short order, should be fun to make.

Couldn't agree more Chairface (love the Tick reference btw), Quar are a good fit for VSF I think, seems not unreasonable for any alternate setting from Victorian through WWII even low-tech sci-fi. but the contraptions of VSF are particularly appealing.

Laughing ferret, you need to improve your Icon address to say Sacramento CA.  That way we get more credit for the creativity of the group.  We are trying to make the rest of the world jealous of our game designing talents.

Can't wait to see the Quar themselves painted up.

I'm still debating whether to us a propeller or not.

congratulations
Your modelling is neat and accurate, and also very authentic when painted (the walker)
though clearly not realistic, it does appear so

You tried converting the new GW dark eldar barges?

Title: Re: Quar on Venus
Post by: Laughing Ferret on March 17, 2011, 05:48:29 PM
Thanks!

I do like the new dark eldar raider a lot, but it is too 'pointy' for the Quar, or at least for how I see them.
Even if removing the spikes and the front spike-ram would leave too many concave curves that terminate in points.  It;d be great for some projects and I'd keep it in mind, but the Quar needed something more round & dumpy and the star wars skiff's basic hull was just right. Even on the wings, I rounded the wing 'points' to keep that feel.

It would be nice to have an excuse to work with that model though  :D

Post by: Chairface on March 17, 2011, 07:01:19 PM
Lovely airships! I have the larger version of that model, and would love some smaller PWTF ones, but they are expensive on the used market.

I hear what you're saying about the DE vehicle, not very Quar like at all.

Your choice of royalist Quar is inspired. I'm sure that they will look very good whn you have painted them. Nice conversions for your Scrembler and Cracker too (I'm not too sure about the other walker) and your flier conversions look great.

The Fifth Mechanical Corp of the Royal Phobosian Light Expeditionary Brigade are pleased to report that B.I.D.B.I, or 'Bidby', the Break It Down/Build It of Solar Sail Transport Vessel 2, Stage 3 is complete and two Light Tanks are ready for service (or will be once they're painted).

I ran across a similar conversion on this forum before and loved it, much thanks for the inspiration!

Definitely go with a propellor on them! As an alternative to the transparent discs, nice big WW1 style double bladed props mounted at the rear as pushers would have a lovely VSF look   :)
I'm looking forward to seeing all this painted and ready to fight! The Quar really are lovely models and it's great to see how you are interpreting them.

Like the others said, what a great way to introduce yourself  :D

Nice base work too for the soldier. When will we see some painted versions?

Nice tank. it fits in nicely with your army concept.

Hmm, I'm not sure; robotic walkers with ray-guns and steam-powered wheeled tanks with conventional weaponry don't really seem to go together, if I'm honest.

Not that I don't think your work is fantastic, by the way. I like the idea of the Quar originating from within our own solar system, it's far more interesting than whatever the original background was.
Title: Re: Quar on Venus: now with Light tanks 3/22
Post by: Laughing Ferret on March 22, 2011, 10:26:51 PM
Thanks :)

Walkers have always seemed a much more complex tech than wheeled & tread vehicles to me too... heck, we've had the later for a century but walkers are pretty much in its infancy still.  So there is a certain amount of 'fantasy' to walkers in a turn of the century sci-fi environment.

Most of the walkers I have do have conventional weaponry: gatling guns or cannons. The one scout walker though isn't equipped with ray-guns... backstory on it is that it has a coil-generator inside that builds up a charge from the motion of the walking legs action which it can discharge as an electric zap. Pretty crude and experimental tech and seems about right for the period.. kind of a Tesla idea is what I'm going for.

No way around it though that walkers are more sophisticated than wheels, but the wheel & tread tanks are supposed to be 'old reliable' tech, while walkers and airships the more advanced.  Maybe similar to how the air force still uses propeller planes today for some uses despite it being much older tech than jets. All the walkers have a boiler & pipe engine system though, to try to bridge that gap.

Better not get me started on the Quar background for 'Planets in Peril'.. I can go on forever with the setting  o_o

Hand grenades and Apaches work pretty well together today, so why not different techs in VSF? In wartime, older kit is often retained past it's use-by date due to necesssity. You often see VSF armies with low-tech muzzle-loaders alongside shiny new experimental stuff, so why not walkers with death-rays and clunky steam-tanks together?  ;)

Thanks!
I had fun with the bases, not many have the barbed wire, but a few for flavor.
I've been too busy with work-paint to put brush to Quar yet, but I did manage to get some late-hour simpler painting done for the machines:

More pictures and bit of fluff here: http://laughingferret.blogspot.com/2011/03/machines-of-phobos-roll-out.html (http://laughingferret.blogspot.com/2011/03/machines-of-phobos-roll-out.html)

Next up on the conversion table is some automaton heavy & light infantry and a much bigger airship in the same style.. really looking forward to that.

Brilliant stuff.  8) using the Quar for VSF is a stroke of genius.

I've always liked the Quar but always thought "huh where would I use them?" since they're kinda low techy for a more 'normal' SF universe. But VSF works.

Nice coversion work too.

Thanks everyone  :D
I enjoyed painting these.  I pretty much kept to the Zombiesmith scheme for Royalists, seeing those are what made me *have* to buy some Quar in the first place.  Their choice was brilliant and I couldn't imagine anything better.

Only a couple changes really: I went for a yellow-toned white instead of khaki toned white though, since I knew I'd be using khaki in the skin tone for about half the minis. Quar in the official setting come in a lot of different skin colors, but I tend to favor a limited pallet, so I wanted to keep the skin colors more limited and more similar, so with about half having khaki-based skin I knew the white couldn't have the same undertone.

Wasn't so sure how well they would work out in a VSF situation.... but with your fluff and paint brush, you have me convinced!

Thanks! I figured it would be a bit of an odd fit, but I'm liking it. The 'Planets in Peril' background fluff I started imagining a few years ago is a mix of VSF & Pulp, it kind of fits between the genres, so can function in either I think.  And well, I love Quar, so had to make it work  ;)

I found out about it too late to prepare for the first week entry.  I considered jumping into it, but knew that realistically I am just too busy on the work-painting schedule to make it happen. I plan to make a go of it for the League 6 (next year? not sure how often then cycle through).

Wish I could say I've had more progress to show, but there isn't much: long hours away from hobby time  :'(

the alphabet/day blog challenge is up to R though, so ready or not, time to show the Robots I made for the Quar army. I had hoped to finish painting them- they're close, but need some clean up, eyes & bases painted still.

got them by Ebay. about $1.10 or $1.20 each.. I figured I couldn't go wrong with less than $2.50 per finished robot, and then I would up with 8 little robots extra, bringing it back down to just over $1 each? Not bad at all.

Title: Re: Quar on Venus: Quar Infantry & Explorer added May 8: pg4.
Post by: Laughing Ferret on May 08, 2011, 08:09:09 PM
Finished the first unit of Line Infantry, and a Quar character:

The character is an Explorer, which is a type of character that is attached to the banner in the campaign, but doesn't fight on the battlefield, but we also run skirmish games, so I thought this Royalist Trench Raider would make a nice explorer/aspiring Spark.
His background fluff is here:
http://laughingferret.blogspot.com/2011/05/supporting-characters-for-phobosian.html (http://laughingferret.blogspot.com/2011/05/supporting-characters-for-phobosian.html)
I added goggles to his helmet.  When in doubt: rivets for machines, goggles for the folks.  :D
(http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb16/LaughingFerretStudio/Quar/004-1.jpg)(http://i206.photobucket.com/albums/bb16/LaughingFerretStudio/Quar/003-1.jpg)

I needed an explorer mini (or spark if I got so lucky on a character roll) and as much as I like Ashlet Alten, I wanted to have a more flexible character type for the skirmish game we had on Friday- separate thread & blog post on that.

Now I just need to find time for the other 50 Quar, 12 Quar cav, more tanks, airship patrol boat...

Painted some vehicles recently, and they had a chance to hit the field...

The tank brigade didn't move much, they had a nice lake to sit behind and a clear range of fire, after they dealt with the American walkers across the field they'd move on to the left later to hunt down the remnants of the Disraelis.

In the foreground is the newest addition, a 'heavy walker' which is the equivalent of a Very Heavy Tank. In our campaign I have a reverse engineered alien weapon (giving +2 to the Fire factor) so I've converted it to have an Aether-Agitator-Projector.

-just noticed: that bugs me: the Quar tanker is sitting a bit skewed -he's magnetized so normally he's fine, just didn't notice the tilt when I put him in- but too lazy to take new pictures now.  :?

But I still have a conventional cannon for it too, and the Quar in the turret is magnetized:

I also painted the flyers.. not a great shot, will get some 'glamour shots' later.
They performed great in the game.  The attached character only flubbed his command roll once, leaving them stranded, but they survived fine.
They moved fast down one flank to get behind the American lines, shoot some troops who ran for the cover of the swampwoods, then they proceeded to take out some artillery.

The Scout Automaton followed them, attacking with sweeping arms, sending Texans crashing through the trees, then ran through to take out some gatling crews before the rest of the troops finally brought the mechanical beast down.

I have recently withdrawn from a number of my tabletop wargaming online locations but I have continued to spend a good bit of time on LAF. That time is proven very well spent when I find great inspirational posts. Sometimes the inspiration is so impactive that it has a way of shaking up my entire gaming priority schedule as a figurative bolt of lightning sparks a new perspective for me.

Planets in Peril does that. I love the Quar the minute I saw them and had some ideas on how I might take them a slightly different direction than their original intended application but this VSF and Pulp concept really is fascinating. Perhaps throw in some Weird War 2 and I can tie a number of projects I have been contemplating into a single setting. Brilliant!

Thank you Laughing Ferret. I wish you were still active online here and on your blog but thank you for continuing your previous activity so it can continue to inspire.
