Title: Child soldiers in 28mm?
Post by: Lawful Evil on March 16, 2011, 02:56:47 AM
Doesn anyone know of any child soldier miniatures in 28mm? I've searched the boards here and done a fairly extensive google search, and the only mentions I've seen are in 20mm, some from Orion Miniatures (who don't even seem to have a website). I wouldn't mind if they are Middle Eastern, African or any sort of near to Modern European appearance, at this scarcity I can't afford to be picky.
Thanks in advance.

Just use 25mm figures. Seriously, I wasn't aiming for child soldiers myself but I've mixed some of Mike Broadbent's Kreigspiel minis with my Eureka insurgents. The weapons are pretty much the same size but the Kreigspeil figures are noticeably smaller, more like 25's. I'm happy, folk differ in size so they can be short folk or teenage recruits according to taste.

Perhaps you could use 20mm figures with open hands & add 28mm scale weapons for younger child soldiers. In some of the conflicts they were using boys as young as 8 or 9.

IIRC, a couple of the Gripping Beast/MoFo African militia are really quite short:
Second from left in this pack-

And left-hand most in this one-

Irregular's 28mm moderns range includes a dedicated child soldier; and depending how small the figures generally are, you might well be able to get away with using those.

Also, some of the TAG Modern africa 'village militia' figures are quite short and thin (and generally young looking)
DRA19-DRA23, each pack typicaly has 1 or 2 suitable.

Another option could be some 28mm Vietnamese, as some ranges have smaller figures for the VC/NVA. Or the conversion options mentioned by others.

Hasslefree also do an assortment of teenagers with guns, so some of those might also be useful?

No need to get questionable about it Bezzo, if your going to pick at the rock of child soldiers in war and how its questionable in wargames then your going to bring down the entire mountain of military history and conflict on your head. None of its very pretty, and since the majority of males who fight in wars are 16 - 20, well no need to buckle any less. People could easily have a tantrum about all wars given the many 'injustices' committed, and many we play wargames about without truly understanding how brutal they were like WW2 wargames and we certainly don't question them ort find them repulsive enough for gaming.

No need to make an exception here if you ask me, we don't need to start a habit.

As for child soldiers, I don't know of any myself, since I have never looked, but I suppose using 25mm etc would be fine. Personally was never one for it with my modern games!
