Title: Sands model M24 Chaffee
Post by: Agis on October 07, 2007, 04:23:39 PM

more on my website: http://www.agisn.de/html/late_war_us.html

The kit is the usual Sands quality:
broken parts, bad casting with lots of airbubbles - and still;
if you put some effort into the kits they always come out somehow cool...

BTW: The Chaffee is also part of my next week Leagues Bonusround...

Cute "Panther-Pup"! :)

But that Divisional Marking is a bit large, isnŽt it? Not exactly historical, but it adds quite an eyecatcher to the model.

It is a 28mm transfer from Brent Dietrich.
I presume it is about right, however the Chaffee is a small tank (only 5m long!) , so maybe it looks a bit too big...

(and I am not sure if Old Ironside even got Chaffees...)

WasnŽt "Old Ironsides" 1st Armoured Division, whereas the above has a "4"? ;)

Alright, alright, IŽll stop bitching right away.

Could it be that the Dietrich Decals are scaled for 1/56th, whereas S&S are 1/60th?  :?:

Brents are 1/56. The scale of the Sands modles are "bigger"...(maybe 1/50)
just check the size of Tom's M3:

Very nice.

I've never heard of Sands. How do they match with Corgi?

It's " S and S" or "S&S" (Shaun & Stewart), and while I agree that the quality might not match many other companies, they do some nice stuff which becomes good enough with a little work. They DO advertise themselves as wargamers models, and Shaun actually did say to me that they aim for the impression rather than an exact scale model. The prices are also quite decent.

S&S is definitely closer to 1:60 on the ones I've reviewed, not 1:50. Company B's decals are for 1:56th, so they would be a little large.
Also remember that the Chaffee is a pretty small "tank" (tank destroyer, really), so decals for a standard vehicle would be even larger.

Lovely- all you need now is a Chaffee for Dien Bien Phu!

Nice,  I'll need to pic up one of those Chaffee's  I have a platoon of the S&S m20's ad M8's and really like them.  I'm finishing up my Ardennes American force, and a couple of Chaffee's might be fun to add in.

The marking Agis has is from our decal set scaled for Corgi Shermans.  I'm sure he just wants to get full use out of em!

We do have new screen printed sets that are scaled for smaller AFV's and 1/56 Shermans.

Here's a pic of the smaller one on a 1/56 Sherman...next to it is an S&S 1/60 M10 and one of our crew!

For the US armoured divisions, the signs were all of the same pattern, colour, branch design, etc and only the number differing.

So the decal on the Chafee would be consistent with the 4th armoured division,  which had no nickname but was part of the force that "relieved" the 101st Airborne at Bastogne.

cheers

On the other hand, since the only M24's at Bastogne were part of 740 tank battalion of  VII corps 1st US army, I don't know..... :?:
maybe the 4th got theirs a bit later during the winter....

Cheers
