Well, as I have been moaning about varnish problems, I thought I might as well show you what I wanted to varnish in the first place... Thankfully the varnishing worked. After losing some Saxons to it, I welcomed the change and painted some Schutztruppe for our local campaign in the mysterious (and completely fictional) Gumbaland somewhere in East Africa (By now I've found out that there is an actual tribe calling themselves Gumba in the Kenyan region).
The miniatures are Copplestone except for the leader, which is Foundry and painted as a German para-military adventurer and is slightly inspired by the Germans in Shout at the Devil.

Great work! :-* :-* :-*
-
Top job there. Hopefully this is the end of all your varnish troubles.
-
Cracking stuff!! :-* Lovely clean and crisp paint jobs, you've done a great job on the bases too. Hope you'll post up some pics of the natives they'll be facing, if and when you,ve painted some.
-
Very nice indeed!
-
Very, very nice.
-
Thank you, fellas. :) By the way, for the uniform colours I decided to try to stay close to the colours depicted on this poster:

So I could go a bit lighter as well here and there. Which is fine, cause I want a mishmash of yellowish khaki tones. I know the battle is WW1 but it should do fine for the 1890-1900s.
-
Excellent work, sir! :-* You have a definite talent for bringing out facial expressions.
-
very VERY awesome :o
Very crisp and very precise, just how i likes to see painted minis :)
-
I've gotta say I do like the colour khaki you've chosen. Very in keeping with the poster artwork and a nice change from the standard WWI khaki.
-
Great work on those whites. Well done :)
-
The white is stunning :-* :-* :-*
Lovely unit :-* :-* :-*
-
They are fantastic. Nice job! I hope you post more photos of your minis, and of the game once it gets started. I agree with everyone else too: the whites are incredible.
-
Brilliant paintwork :-*

Gorgeous stuff 8)

WOW! Beautiful miniatures. Perfect colours and the “white man” has much character.
-
Thanks fellas! :) I sure know how to lift my spirits! :D
The Khaki is based around Vallejo Green Ochre by the way, lightened up with Iraqui Sand and Darkened with German Cam. Medium Brown or by washing it with a watered down Devlan Mud.
By the way, RJ, the Adventurer is painted using your skin tones... I quite like it.
-
Remington, these looks incredible! Your ability is really enviable. Keep sharing!
-
I'm late to the party but very nice work Sir
-
:-*
Superb brush work Sir.
-
good work, inspiring.
-
Thanks fellas! :)
As the big hairy man said:
I used to have mad cow's disease, but I'm alright Noooooooooo!

I wouldn't usually make such a fuss over a cow, but I count this as an achievement. :) On the one hand, this cow kicked my arse back to painting... On the other it is the very first horse-like animal I've ever painted and I do consider this to be a horse painting exercise. I am glad to say that it turned out quite well.

Last time I took some pictures for a friend, he told me, he thought they were darker than usual. At first I thought it was the outside light not playing along, but now I know it was one of my lamps. I've since bought new light bulbs and I must say that they are doing their work quite well.

Bullocks!!
I want to paint some Bullocks.
Lovely work by the way
-
Those look fantastic Dimitri! :o

Very nice! I also have something new for friday...
-
Excellent job on that cow! Really is a stunning paint job. :-*
-
Moo - she is quite an achievement!

These did not take as long as the last post might suggest, but I moved really slowly from tiny painting session to minuscule painting session. Still, finally another 4 are done and now only one or two remains for my first T&T group.

So here is the little group so far.

Photos are not that great, but I'd rather post something again than succumb to my I-can't-be-bothered-eness.
Comments are always welcome. :)
-
Slow progress is still progress, you have to tell yourself that (that's what I do, anyway). Keep at it if you can, even if it is only in small doses. We'll not lose you to the can't-be-bothered-ness. I won't have a man left behind. I won't let it happen. Not on my watch... lol
Looking really good. I especially like the expression on the bugler's face. And there's nowt wrong with the photos that I can see.
-
Very nice mate - as always.
Great skin tones, you have got them down no worries.
-
Not on my watch... lol
This is my painting brush. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My painting brush is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.
Thanks guys. :) I tried using a different skin-tone here and there but that's not really visible. Only the bugler looks a bit different. The last 2 Schutztruppe fellas will have a darker skin-tone hopefully.
-
Sterling paint job, I'm a bit late chiming in on this one, but noticed the African cattle and am in the midst of painting some "stock" myself, great pattern paint job on the bovine!
-
Thanks, yancey5! :) I wish you the best of luck with them.
-
Beautifully done Rem. Inspirational and great reference material.
I must get some colonial Germans soon :)
-
Oh, they're loads of fun. :) And you can make up names for your leaders with loads of "von" and "Freiherr von und zu" :) And in this setting you don't have to be the baddy. :)
-
Real life has been getting in the way again! Pfff... :D
Here are the last two Askari Schutztruppe for now. Plus a boy that will be escorting cows or donkeys for my T&T Schutztruppe force. I've used a slightly different skin tone but I can't see the difference in the photos really. Should have gone that extra step further. The Askari's face on the left was influenced by a brilliant paint job by Plynkes. They were painted about 2-3 weeks ago, but only photographed now.
I will be continuing with my Africa minis after a short stop in the Dark Ages, but I'll be probably painting less uniformed Askari next. Anyway... here are the three guys for now.

Lovely :-* :-*
-
All fantastic, but my favourite is the one on the left. The small detail of the slightly different colour used on his lips makes a big difference
-
Fantastic work! I love your painting style. Especially your paintjob on the faces of the miniatures is extraordinary! The Askaris are having a very scary facial expression and the boy is looking very anxious…brilliant. :-*
-
Thanks guys, for all your kind words.
I am glad I went for the Plynkes style lip... It really changes the face for the better. But this face was quite right for the colour change. It seems to be a bit influenced by the Corto Maltese comics. At least it reminds me of Pratt's African faces.
-
Remington,
Actually, I like your boy with a stick best of all of these fellows. He looks like a guy whose favorite cow is not being cooperative and better just damn watch out lol lol
LB
-
I will have to adopt your painting style for my own Askaris...
-
Thank you guys! Where's the "blush" smiley?
Michi, what the skin is concerned these last ones are simply according to the Professor's recipe! :)
Marianas_gamer, he is my favourite as well. I am looking forward to placing him next to unruly cows or donkeys. Hopefully the stick will make his life easier! :)
-
Very nice painting indeed! :-*
-
Really nice painting, I bet they look great on the table as well as in hand.
