Title: 29th Panzer Regiment, 12th Panzer Division (June 1941)
Post by: Gunbird on April 08, 2011, 08:13:11 AM
Started a new project, Early War Panzers. I copied the 29th Panzer Regiment, 12th Panzer Division as it stood on the 22nd of June 1941 (as described in the Rapid Fire book)

The core of the army are the 38(t)'s
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j17/wayswatcher/20mm%20WW2/1941-42%20German%20Army/wip38.jpg)

38(t)'s from Pegasus with spare parts from Attack, Minimi Panzer I's, II's and Beutepanzer A13's that are standing in for 2 Airfix Panzer IV's I'm converting to the D model. Fuel drums by SHQ, waiting for another one from SHQ and a bigger one from MMS.

Currently adding stowage to most, making small changes, filling a few holes. And I was watching putty dry so built a wrecked Blitz just for fun (old Heller kit, have loads of them)

I hope to have most done and basecoated by next weekend.

Like everything I do, it is 20mm, correct.

I'm trying to spend an hour per evening on these when I'm done with cleaning and sorting stock for my sale, but that plan isn't really working. Still, for my own motivation, a current status report:

HQ:
Done as is, ready for paint. Note the 2 front wheels, something went wrong in the mould that day, the other one from the box had the same problem. The rest are fine. I don't care, model is good enough as it is.

38(t) Group 1:
I'm leaving this group light on stowage, so besides some minor clean ups these are ready for paint.

38(t) Group 2:
More stowage, I'll try and give the anxious commander the biggest flag in my collection. 2nd tank has extra fuel and a spare roadwheel on the back, and a nice log for the first. Which is a standard match with the head removed.

Panzer II's:
Could use more stowage, have to fix up the mantlet on the second one and fix the MG-34 in place. Replaced both the guns with barrels from a 20mm Flak. I know, not correct, but I wasn't happy with the guns as delivered, and I had a spare pack. So sue me.

Panzer I's:
Hardly any work on these yet so pass.

Beutepanzer Cruiser A13:
Spent waaay to much time on these, but building all of the canister racks proved to be a bit more time consuming then anticipated. Still debating if I will do the same on the 2nd Cruiser (but I propably will)

Panzer IV's:
Move along here, not much to see yet.

Trailers:
2 fuel ones basecoated, 3rd is a cargo trailer with roadwheels and some other mechanical bits. This is actually meant for the Blitz but hey. I'm expecting another single barrel trailer from SHQ tomorrow, and MMS confirmed my order for the double barrel today so it should turn up soon as well.

That is it for now, come back soon.

Lovely woek as ever, I'm always impressed with the stuff you post on here. Re the Pz IV, didn't/doesn't MMS do a D version? I have a beautiful 20mm metal E version somewhere.

With great weather and a busy week at work I haven't done that much this week, but there is some progress. I finished the Blitz wreck and the first 3 trailers. The MMS double barrel has arrived, but I find it a bit fiddly so it is not finished yet. Small progress on the IV's, and did some primary work on the CO's ride and the 2 Beute.

Enough chatting, piccy time:

I ditched the Airfix Panzer IV's in favour of the PSC ones, that way I can use the same chassis for my entire collection (and its a good thing too, as I want the Panzer IV as my main tank (together with the Stugs), not a FoW army full of Tigers and Panthers .....yech) and as it is a fast build, speeds up my progress. Though in my case that will not always be the case  :D

Anyway. Been busy converting 2 PSC Panzer IV's into the D model, with sofar the following steps:

-removed top turret detail and added new detail plus handrails (needs more work)
-set back the turret hatch a few mm's, need some milliput to add the curve
-removed the grill detail and filled in the slots, propably needs another smoothing layer
-added round headlights
-cut down the barrel by a few mm's, it looked too long
-cut out the hull to create the set back mg station
-built a new exhaust system, added smoke candles on top of it (can't fit 5 sadly so did 4)
-added a bit more detail to the roadwheels, sprocket and rear idler (needs more work on the idler)
-opened up the gunsights one one of em (needs more work)
-trimmed down and filled in the turret doors (needs more work)

Good thing I only need 2 for starters, though now I'm eyeing Tauchpanzers as well......

Since my painting vibe has left me (actually its over at my gf's place) and all I have here is a basic tool set I took home some cleaned and based models to fill a few holes and update them. I know, the Stugs really should wait, but I have nothing to finish on the original batch now so I started the Stug gruppe. First up is the 253 from Minimi:
I spent some of my budget on a small SHQ order that included 2 sets of scissor scopes, 1 for this vehicle. And then I end up scratchbuilding the contraption anyway..... Added headlights, Notek, cap on the front armour plate, rails for the cabling, jerry cans, armoured box for the antenna and rearranged the rear deck hatch. Not only is it way too big, but facing the wrong way as well. All remidied now and ready for primer.

WW
are these for show or play?  That's a lot of work if they are for play :)
As far as antenna, I thought the frame one was the standard back then?  I guess i havent seen many pics of pole ones then.

Nice work tho

I only build for play, and I think you are mixing it up with the 250/3 (Comms vehicle). The 253 is a dedicated observation vehicle for Stugs, and the only 2 pictures with a (small) frame aerial I have found are from Afrika, and these are for the invasion in Russia. Got some piccies to show me? I have another one but that one is for the future army for North Afrika

Right, finished updating the Minimi 252. Stripped all detail from the top, cut a few new hatches and gave it some minor detailing and 2 headlights, and busted 1 up. Ready for paint. Just need to scout for funds to pick up the ammo trailer.

Picked up 2 Panzerjager 1's from Britannia for this project, but 1 came with a busted barrel. Grubby is sending a new one but I think I will send it to the Afrika box.

Gunner is fixed in place, commander is pinned but still removable for painting. Nice little tank, and with the drilled out muzzle it looks so much better.

Another update:

Gave Piers skinmethod a try:
I like it. My old method made them look a bit zombie like.

Finished 2 supply/light trucks:

Finished a staff car:

And plenty of other things to come....

Staff car for my EW Germans (also for a spotter and for the Propaganda Kompanie).

Way too many coats of varnish on it so the detail is a bit washed out I'm afraid.  :blackeye:
