Thanks for the feedback so far chaps, very, very much appreciated  :)

Aaron, I empaphise  lol however, don't worry, it'll be some weeks (or maybe months) until I've mustered enough troops to release our first packs of provincials  ;)

Axabrax - Regulars are still in the early stages, genadiers will be in there.... maybe not the first release though  :-X

Blackwolf - I think I know what you mean, looking at him afresh a few days after I'd finished sculpting, I thought: actually, I could see him being used in other roles including the Imaginations C18 campaigns that are very popular.

You've all perked up my morning  :D

That's fantastic news!!!  I'm just splashing the first bits of paint on my LAST five GM figures.  I was hoping something was on the way and these lads fit the bill perfectly.  I'm really looking forward to them, so get sculpting! (and painting as I really find your painted figures inspirational when I begin work)

This has drawn my attention back from finding lots of brassy-steamy things to buy with my monthly allotment.

Ohhhhhhh, the provinvials are really nice. I think you've heart the following question a thousands (or more) times. But are your figs compatible with Conquest ?
Some years ago I've bought Redoubt Miniatures and I don't want to make the same bad experience.
I don't like the new regulars of Conquest.
So I want to have a look at your figs in future, if they are compatible.

Koppi,

I recently painted up a couple of batches of these figures "for hire" and I have a large personal collection of Conquest miniatures and I think they mix well. The GM figures are a little "beefier", but the heights are very similar.

As well as the Provincials, progress is being made on the first packs of armed settlers, here are a couple of chaps who I've very recently sculpted, and more are under way.

As usual, more pics and info can be found on the Studio page of the website.
They're intended to chiefly be used in defending settlements at short notice, but will easily mix into our planned militia packs, and I can see them popping up in all sorts of other mid 18th century adventures.  ;)

Those civilians look like must haves! When you get around to unarmed types please don't forget Indians! That seems to be the biggest hole in the market right now. I know there is a tiny little reason for that, but I want them so profit be damned!  ;D

Good question, thanks for raising it  :)
They'll be wearing coats, rather than just shirts or waistcoats, and carrying more campaign equipment. There'll be quite a lot of cross-over possibilities though.
They'll also be able to serve for provincials from those colonies which did not issue uniforms.

Chaps,

While the two new packs of Settlers Defending are being cast, we’ve decided to offer them on "Pre-Order", something we don't normally do, but as we have received a lot of communication from customers who are keen to get their hands on them, we're putting them up now to better enable Pre-Orders to be sent off as soon as the castings arrive.  :)

Cheers,

That's torn it. The plan was for a small skirmish set-up with all the figures fitting into a single 120 figure capacity Kaiser Rushford multicase. Having painted Conquest and Foundry I have to say that GM figures are my first choice for the period.

I can see a double size case on the Christmas list- its guaranteed to get filled with future releases, especially if they include non-combatants for both settlers and Indians.

:D Goodoh, it seems to be proving popular  ;)

Re the Huron pack, I must confess they're a bit stalled while I've been trying to concentrate on getting those first armed settlers out and moving the provincials forward (more pics soon), having made a good start on the rest of the pack though, I'll have to get back to them soon.

Just put up the beginnings of a blog page on the website as a potential means of better communicating progress - unless it proves too time consuming and as long as it gets some interest.
Things will continue to appear in detail on the Studio page, but the blog should offer better feedback opportunities.

Bear in mind some comments may have to be removed  lol

Imagine my amusement though to find that in the TVG scenarios i don't need French Regulars but i do need 2 x units of British Regulars and Grenadiers (i have one unit)

I'm planning on using them in the Johnson's Camp scenario which a couple of us are doing over the xmas break

That'll larn yuh  lol

You could always use the Frenchies as their grenadier column - I know they're not but for the sake of one game...

I was planning 3 packs of 6 for the first batch (may do more command figures and a few in full length coats etc to follow) the first 9 have been master moulded, and the other 9 are being sculpted (or will be again soon) at least started.

ETA  ??? as early as I can in 2012  ;)

This is all fantastic stuff Lance, glad to hear about upcoming stuff!  I especially can't wait to get my hands on some more Huron, war clubs just makes them more appealing!  It seems there's lots of English stuff coming down the pipes, so that will be a welcome foe.

Glad to see your blog rolling, those of us who count themselves among your fans can't get enough info about what's going on!  Keep them coming.

Too long  lol - but I promise to try to move them up the chart  :)

That sounds like a good idea  :D

I was planning 3 packs of 6 for the first batch (may do more command figures and a few in full length coats etc to follow) the first 9 have been master moulded, and the other 9 are being sculpted (or will be again soon) at least started.

ETA  ??? as early as I can in 2012  ;)

More pics of these soon.

Cheers Lance

I really like the idea of a few Huron with clubs and Anglo-American Provincials, not necessarily in that order

OK, hint taken re getting back on with those Huron going our clubbing  :D

Meanwhile, I'm wondering whether to show some pics of the progress on the Provincials now, or wait until after Boxing Day. Is everyone too busy with Christmas shopping, office parties (watch out for those pitfalls) and other last minute jobs right now, or would a brief distraction be appreciated?

I must admit Iain, while I haven't yet started work on Highlanders (have started British Regulars, Regulars for Braddock campaign, some LI) the ones that are appealing most are those Highlanders serving as LI in Indian Leggings - maybe not the most logical place to start on Highlanders ...  :D but I do like the look of them.

TBH mate they would be my first choice. Eureka are the only ones that i have seen who do the leggings on the Highlanders but their prices don’t suit for the limited poses and a frugal Scots man like myself :D

Well it is only an hour or so from the house so it seems a natural choice. I have loads of Indians and a few dozen highlanders. I just need to beef up the Scots and acquire more pack horses.

That picture above reminds me, Eureka's Scots are in leggings and a sleeved waistcoat so have no facing or lace showing. When you eventually do yours it would be great if at least some were in leggings and regimental coats.

Just as an aside, the way to get my business (and of course I only speak for myself), is to do something--anything--that hasn't been done by multiple companies before. Or at least to put some spin on what's already been done. I already have more rangers, french irregulars,  and Indians than I know what to do with, so why not do rangers, french, and Indians in winter gear?   Going to do Highlanders? Well I already have a bunch in static poses, so do them charging as has already been suggested!  Going to do regulars? Do them skirmishing instead of marching. How about Light Infantry? British Grenadiers? Personalities? Casualties? It's funny as there is so much ground to cover, and yet there's a huge amount of redundancy in what's available. Just my two cents. The provincials are a step in the right direction, I think, as the poses are more active than the other 30 or so provincial figs I already have...

Thanks Axabrax, I really appreciate you going to the trouble to communicate your thoughts on range development. I hope you’ll be pleased to learn that I not only agree with all that you’ve said, but that everything you’ve mentioned is on the (rather long) list of subjects I’m hoping to cover.

A couple of things that I hope will please you and some of the other chaps on this forum, are:
Highlanders will be attacking ‘a la’ Ticonderoga, Bushy Run etc.
British Regulars will not be marching. While I fully appreciate the appeal of the upright marching pose that has become popular with manufacturers and wargamers alike, making it pretty much a standard for 18th Century Foot since Mark Copplestone’s Foundry Prussians of the 1990s, I want something a little more lively and emotive.

You’re absolutely right when you say “do something--anything--that hasn't been done by multiple companies before”, I think that’s why when we released our first Canadian Militia packs, we were hailed for being the first to represent them properly; similarly, I went for Mohawk and Huron as my first Native American components to sculpt, rather than the usual ‘generics’. I’m not the first to go for Provincials, but I’m hoping they’ll be well received, so again, cheers for that   :D

The way I’m going about sculpting and releasing this range is quite simple: make the figures I always wanted to have. As everyone seems to want everything in a different order from the next chap, I clearly can’t entirely please everyone, so all I can do is work my way through my (very extensive) list in an order that seems to make sense to me. I’m trying to appeal to those who are new to or just getting started on the period (and hopefully draw in a few teetering on the brink), as well as those like yourself, who may already have Indians, Rangers etc. by other manufacturers.

Hoping to devote more time to the range this year, so there’s more new stuff to see  :)

Cheers,

Lance

Please keep the thoughts, requests, suggestions etc coming  8)

You're right of course, I need to get some more French elements done, I made my first dollies for Compagnies Franches etc some while back, but got so caught up with settlers and provincials (with bits of Brits  ;) ) that they've taken something of a back seat. Nice work on the provincials, Lance. I love the sergeant! As far as halberds go I personalylly doubt they were much carried if issued at all. That said, my unit of Pennsylvania provincials feature a sergeant with halberd...just because. To cover the bases maybe make a sergeant with open hand and choice of weapon?

TBH Lance i'd have preferred to have seen the Provincials in longer coats from the off, and not seen the leggings. Not that it'll stop me buying these.

The Sargeant with a musket is probably more accurate but hey we're gamers; one with a Polearm will always be welcome.

Personally i'd like to see a wounded figure in the command packs. They make excellent "disruption" markers etc and can always be the first figure removed from the game if people don't like them.

Just a thought

Chaps,

I went for the short coats first as the more reference I gathered, the more units seemed to be wearing them - you'll see what I mean when I get the painting guide together.

Some units are usually depicted in long coats, some in either depending on the source you're using. Some are shown without gaiters, it's true, and even have a colour of stockings mentioned in deserter descriptions etc, however by my way of thinking, although they may not have much choice of wardrobe, deserters are more than likely to have ditched gaiters etc. On campaign (and in most references) the provincials would for the most part be wearing gaiters or at least Indian style leggings. Having said that, New Yorkers are often depicted without any kind of leggings.  ::)

I'll make some in long coats (turned back) later, and maybe even a few without gaiters.  :)

Casualties will appear, but not with the first batch, that would only hold things up more ;)

Cheers,
Lance

I think you are right on coat length and gaiters/leggings. Short coats are more efficient and, more importantly from the parsimonious provincial assemblies' point of view, less expensive! I don't think there were many to be found after the initial year or two of the war.

As for gaiters and/or leggings, the first time you try to walk off a trail in rural PA you'll realize why they were worn. Between briers, ticks, and other hazards simple stockings just don't cut it!

Really like the look of the Provincials.
Go with the short coats, if they sell well, then others could be made and cast.
I have a large number of most types of troops in the war,
but have few Provincials in uniforms. Looks like I will be ordering some. Can't wait.

While this may or may not  be a good financial decision, I want my provincials to look like the only place they could be is in the Northwest USA for the FIW.

I have to say that I prefer the models without open hands as well.  This coming from a guy who's starting a business using a variation on that theme.  I like the figures the way they are, if you want opinions.  I don't mean to disagree with you Stanley, I've been really enjoying watching your game and listening to the banter.  Keep up the great work, AAR are far too few around here.

I'd love to - later ;)

Funny you should mention that, I've been contacted by a chap in Canada who's using our Mohawk etc for that period. It's a period I do like, but I'd want to sculpt Native Americans tailored for the period.

One for me to think about there  8)

Although our regular British and French infantry are quite some way from being ready for release, I've added the whole French & Indian War range from Flags of War to our Online Shop. At £1.75 a pair, these are a great buy, I'll be using them for my own regimental colours.   :)

I don't expect to sell a great many of these until we have Ensigns available to carry them, and regular units to serve under them, but they're available now. Postage is free, but we're only selling them with orders of figures, books or rules.

First green for the Settlers Defending Command & Characters

As work moves on for the rest of the first packs of Provincials (more pictures soon), other sculpts are needed to fill up the next master mould(s), here's one of them finished.

I went for a slightly more 'dynamic' pose than in the original sketch, and I'm quite happy with the result.

As well as defending against the attacks of hostile Indians and their chumz, this fellow could easily find his way into all sorts of 18th Century adventures.

Great work Lance!  Keep those civilians coming and let's get that mold filled.  :)

I'm looking forward to putting a few regulars in the ranks.

Any chance of a minister in the group?  These types of figures play a big role in the area before and during the FIW war.  Would be kinda nice to have one to match the other civilians.

Fergal - there's a minister among the concept sketches for the pack, you'll find them on the Studio page of the website, or back somewhere on the blog page. Will that fit the bill?

Heya

I have just started to look at your miniatures, primarley due to the fact that I am looking for suitable miniatures for our Lace Punk adventures, and I do wonder where the Provincial officer is? Or perhaps it havent been produced yet? I got to say that I like a lot of your figures, especially the settlers and such, very nice indeed.

I can only imagine that your "melee weapons" natives will be some of the best selling in the line once finished.  It's really what we all want if you are a fan of the FIW.  Natives jumping out of the woods with a hatchet ready to mess up some Europeans.  I personally would buy MULTIPLES of these lads when they come out.

Though to me, hatchet raised while holding onto the musket seems a bit casual.  I'd love to see the musket dropped while charging with the hatchet or musket slung across the back while going in for the attack.  But I know I'll love whatever you come up with.

[edit]Tomahawk in one hand, knife in the other is pure gold!

Bodes well for the future  ;)

When my wife and I first got together, she took up my other interests of target shooting and re-enactment, but has only occasionally painted figures - when she has, they've been at least on a par with my own. I need to try to get her to paint some of my sculpts, and she's the other director of Galloping Major; but when it comes to wargames, I haven't managed to draw her in, if only we had more (some  lol) spare time.

Tempting  :D There are a couple of recent ranges out there for War of 1812, and I'm in touch with a chap in Canada who's releasing some rules for that period.

I must say they are a joy to paint. Managed a couple of units of Anglo settlers/militia for tomahawk and muskets yesterday.
Expect another order soon mate!

That's great Rich, sounds like you're making enviable progress, any chance of some pictures later?

Cheers,

I've been patiently waiting for the Marines since I found the range.  My Brit forces are looking quite large and the French shrink in comparison.  At least I know when they Marines land, they should be fantastic, but I'm not sure how long I can hold out.   :-[  There are lots of scenarios I want to play that involve Marines.

Lance, I am looking forward to the release of the Galloping Major Provincials.  These masters look very nice.

My painting capacity is well behind my ability to aquire lead figures and ships, etc., but my compulsion needs more figures, especially these provincials!

Your "free" militia officer did very well in a F&IW game I put on recently.  The dice were with him (and the player) and the unit of settlers/militia he commanded performed valiantly.  It must all be due to that figure, right?

Keep us posted on the release.  I still am wanting to get a couple more of that militia officer "free" figure with my next order.

First pre 1930 'uniformed' figs I have painted for many a year. My painting will never win any prizes but is aimed at getting a lot done and on the table looking ok. Strange I used to be a real slow bod painting wise. I think the 'new' washes fit my style.

Good job as I get little time to paint (rather be playing).

Well James, if the administering of a fair but firm slapping doesn't put them right  lol, then:

Armed Settlers as Minute Men/Militia
Mohawk as His Majesty's Allies
Huron could be used as rebel allied types at a pinch
Canadian Militia could be pressed into service for the Quebec campaign
You could get away with Rangers in caps and tricorns for Butler's Rangers (possibly other less regular looking units too).
That's it so far

Cheers,

Lance

What's the ETA old boy for the Provs?

Computer issues and other annoying stuff have taken out my would-be sculpting time this week. Just need to finish off one small but important item to send away the next master mould's worth of stuff, having said that, as I'll be passing by Birmingham later next week, I may drop them off. I need those castings back for a few bits for another master mould to complete the first 4 packs, after that, it's getting the production going. So, hopefully in the next few weeks.

Those computer  issues have also prevented me from posting new pics, but I did manage to put up a picture of a couple of corporal versions for the Company Command on the Studio page of the website (just) before things went awry, take a look:

If you make that settlers set (just as the sketches show), I'll buy a pack or two.  They look perfect as alternative pirate miniatures! (I know that's not what you're going for though!).

I was looking through a lot of the FIW ranges, looking for some more models with pistol and sabre etc.  I have far too many guys with muskets right now.

To ensure that you receive the first 4 packs of Anglo-American Provincial Infantry as soon as they are available, you can order them in advance as Pre-Orders at a preferential price from the Online Shop starting now. It may be a month or so before they're ready to be sent out, maybe less.

FIW BPT 2: Anglo-American Provincials in Short Coats Loading/Moving
FIW BPT 3: Anglo-American Provincials in Short Coats, Light Equipment

NEW RETAILER for GALLOPING MAJOR in the USA

Our American customers are very important to us, some have been enthusiastic supporters of our range of figures since we first launched, and they've always represented a significant proportion of our sales.

One of our customers in the USA was so keen on our figures, that for some months now we've been in discussions around his proposal to retail our figures to his fellow Americans. Keith's website is now online and ready to receive visits and take orders.
http://loyalhannaoutpost.com/
To quote Keith: 'The name "Loyalhanna Outpost" came about because I live in the beautiful Laurel Highlands of Western Pennsylvania. We are centrally located in the middle of all the French and Indian War action in the area. Nearby are the sites of Fort Ligonier, Fort Necessity, Jumonville, Bushy Run, and Fort Pitt. We currently have no shop open to the public, and all transactions are via internet.'

We want to take this early opportunity to wish Keith every success with this new venture, and hope to see him gain new business in the United States. Please contact him via the Loyalhanna website with any enquiries, you'll find him very welcoming.

Of course, we'll always continue to very much welcome orders and communications from the USA here at Galloping Major too!

Cheers,

Lance

I've been looking at your FIW miniatures more and more of late. The primary reason is they look like they are made with a painter in mind or as we say painter friendly. By that I mean the parts look accessible, larger and raised. I've began placing more of a premium on that type of miniatures because they tend to be fun to paint and keep you at the painting table.  8) I'll likely be investing in some soon.

I'm looking forward to seeing your version of the French Regulars btw. :)

UPDATE ON PROVINCIALS PRE-ORDER

Hi all, those of you who've already pre-ordered our first release of provincials will be eagerly looking forward to their arrival, indeed, the plan was they'd be coming out about now, but they're not quite ready yet - I'm expecting to be able to put the finishing touches to the last couple of sculpts in the next few days.  ;)

As an extra thank-you, pre-orders will receive an extra (different) "Soldiers Free" provincial, who won't, initially at least, be going out with other orders; he may put in an appearance from time to time later, but won't become one of our standard Soldiers Free.

Anyone ordering the provincials pre-order before it's withdrawn as the packs become available for order will also receive the extra figure, making the deal to 26 soldiers.  8)

There'll also be pics of more new sculpts for the range coming soon.  :)

Hi Helen,

Got the order thanks.

Settlers command are over half-way sculpted, and wil be the next, or one of the next packs released after the provincials.

The Mohawk "Soldiers Free"" will need to be fitted into the production schedule at some point ere too long, a few people have been asking about them. I'll see if we can get them back in for the Autumn.
Everyone needs some Mohawk  :D

The last few figures for the Provincials Pre-Order are being master moulded and I felt inspired to finish this chap, an officer for the Anglo-American Militia, while progressing the Armed Settlers Command & Characters.
I have a few other militiamen currently in very early stages, the chief difference between them and the Armed Settlers is that they'll be wearing coats and carrying more equipment, the intention being that both types will be able to be mixed in units or not as required.
The Anglo-American Militia will also serve well as Provincials from those colonies which did not issue uniforms.
It's quite easy to see this gentleman fulfilling various other roles too.
See the Studio page of the website.

The extended pre-order deal for the first 4 packs of Provincials will end on this Friday 18th August at some point during the morning (UK time). After a few days the production packs and some deals will start to appear in the online shop for rormal ordering once the pre-orders have all gone out.  :)

That's right Aaron  :D

Update on my own painting efforts: so far I've painted for my own collection 1 PA and 3 NJ, which need varnishing and basing and a couple of VA in early stages - started on them well before the production run started. That's right, slow  :'(, but in my defence, most of what would be my painting time is these days taken up by sculpting etc  ::), I'll put them up when they're done. Odd to paint bits and pieces I know, but that's mainly so I can use them to support the painting guide I'm writing for provincials.

Title: Galloping Major Figures Arrived
Post by: ffrum on September 22, 2012, 05:05:29 AM
The second order I have made from Galloping Major (Hi Lance) arrived two days ago.  I ordered the Provincials and some more Settlers.  I am very happy with the figures.  They are a touch larger than my Dixon figures, but I have found that they fit in on the table top with the rest of my (various types) F&IW figures pretty well.

With the numbers of GM figures I have waiting to be painted at present; I can put on a good sized skirmish game.  One of the forts I have is "Settlement Fort" from Old Glory (resin cast, stockade components).  I think the GM Settlers will be honored to defend that outpost.  The only delay is the painting part.  About half of the Settlers are painted and were a pleasure to finish.

The painted provincials below look very nice.  I must work on my technique and improve the pace of production with the paintbrush.

I have already finished units of the Connecticut Militia, Hezekiah Dunn's Rangers, New Jersey Frontier Guard, Jersey Blues Provincial Militia, Ligonier Militia, Maryland Militia, Massachusetts Militia, New Hampshire Militia, New York Provincial Militia, Pennsylvania Augusta Militia, Pennsylvania Provincial Militia, Virginia Provincial Militia, Independent Company of Newburg, Dank's Rangers, Gorham's Rangers, Lowrey's Rangers, and Roger's Rangers.

Can anyone provide me with a few suggestions for additional units to paint the GM Provincials and rangers to represent?  Thanks for your suggestions!

My Provincials arrived two days ago.  My wife was knitting last night, so I sat down beside her to clean up the models before I primed them, I had real trouble trying to find a mold line to remove.  Just fantastic work all around and full of character.

I really want to paint them as Massachusetts men, but I'm liking the colors of the Jersey boys.  I might have to fold and betray my New England tendencies for some flashier models on the table.

Keep up the great work!

This is another chap I've painted up as a soldier in the Virginia Regiment.
Actually, this one doesn't appear in any of the recently released Provincials packs, he's one I sculpted as a special "Soldiers Free" giveaway.

I've decided to add to the books, rules, flags and "other stuff" on the site as well as my little chaps, with some good quality buildings etc from other manufacturers. As an extra incentive to buy them from us, there'll be special limited release figures to accompany the larger items - free of course. I've added a new page to the website titled "The Period Setting", which will give more details.

Here's the first one I've added to the online shop, the Block House by Frontline Wargaming:

There's also a deal available which adds a pack of Provincials with light equipment and an extra Soldiers Free character to make up a little eight man unit to garrison the block house.  :)

Inspirational: the character, the episode and potentially for a 28mm figurine in your range:
Madeleine Jarret de Verchères (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeleine_de_Verch%C3%A8res)

Though:
- for the F&IW she would wear a tricorne rather than a slouched hat,
- she is depicted at 14, so for a 'generic' armed female settler she would be older and look more... developed (http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=285705)

Hi Abdul,

Thanks for the input, I had seen the statue before, but not the painting.
Although this lady died before the F&IW, so the character name wouldn't fit, the general principle for a lady Habitante holds up.  :)

I'm wondering about the provenance of the painting, which although very nicely executed, seems to lean a little on early 20th century popular "Pilgrim Fathers" imagery.  :?

I'm planning some female settlers at some point, so these pictures will go into my files for sure.

Thanks again  8)

These are the figures I’m planning to work on during this year, if all goes according to plan, we’ll have releases of most or all of the following during this year:

New packs (coming soon):

Provincials under attack

Huron Warriors with hand-to-hand weapons

Settlers Defending Command & Characters

Mohawk Warriors with bows

The first releases of:

Anglo-American Militia

Compagnies Franches de la Marine

British Regular ‘hat company men’

Highlanders

More Indians

The lists are neither exhaustive nor necessarily shown in a proposed order of release, other releases may also appear during the year including more Personalities.

So thats febs releases sorted whats after that ?? ;)     cant wait for these Lance

While I love EVERYTHING in the list, I'm especially excited by the new Huron and Compagnies Franches de la Marine!  I have so many anglos and Mohawks, I can't wait to get some more opposition to equal things out.  The Compagnies Franches de la Marine have so many uses for skirmish, they will fill such a big gap and keep me from seeking other suppliers.  Thanks Lance.

Yes I am really hoping for highlanders with leggings, kilt, and in attack poses.
I would love to see a charging pack with basket hilt swords, dirks, etc.

I am looking forward to your new releases for 2013 Lance!  I hope Galloping Major has a great year!

I'll be at Vapnartak at the York Racecourse on Sunday, on the stand with my old mates from Empress Miniatures - come and say hello if you're there.   :D
I may also have a small amount of our range with me  ;)

As usual at the bigger shows, Caliver Books will be there with some of our stuff too.  :)

I've added the 3 new dwellings from 4Ground to the website, which together with the 3 existing ones plus the block-house constitute a good-sized settlement even before duplication.  :)

The buildings are named for the opposing colonies along lines of the style of construction, those named "New England" being of squared-off logs laid horizontally and locked/overlapped at the corners, while the ones given the name "New France" have the timbers mostly working vertically. The two styles can be used separately or combined to give greater variety.  :)

Really useful, good looking, inexpensive cabins.  :D

It wasn't as bad as i feared for my FIW collection (others didn't fare as well).

All your figures (bar a Huron scout) were unaffected Lance.

Only a 10 man Grenadier Company suffered. I honestly can't think what i did differently. Perhaps the Grenz had a lick less varnish but that's all.

Still, they're now on mdf and other than a new paint job on the gaitors all is well

I suspect that its a combination of using old coins, No More Nails (to secure the figure to the coin rather than superglue) using Pumice Gel for the basing material & only painting on Cote D'Arms varnish rather than the usual gloss spray then matt spray that has caused the copper sulphate to appear and ruin the base/paint

The Militia begin to assemble:
Some more of those pictures I mentioned a couple of days back.

The first 3 Anglo-American Militiamen other than their officer (appears earlier on this thread, and further down the Studio page of the website) to be completed to far, though several others are currently in progress. They have a generally more "campaign ready" appearance than the Settlers Defending, as they are wearing coats and carrying an assortment of equipment, but will mix in nicely with them if desired. The Militia will also serve well as Provincials from any of those several colonies which did not provide uniforms for their troops.  8)

All right, true confessions time  :D
I know it sounds very sad, but I had exactly the same problem with remembering what colours and mixes I used, so for units, I've started noting them down in a book  ::) - I said it would sound sad  :P
My problem is, I may start out painting quite a lot more figures in one batch, but as things progress and my patience wears thin, I tend to want to finish off 2 or 3 in particular, so the rest get left behind, in fact, they can get left in the rear for quite some time  :( so at least if I keep a note of the colours I was using, I have some hope of a reasonable match - OK, still sounds sad  lol
Add to that my need to spend more time sculpting than painting, and a requirement to paint a variety to show the figures on the site, and my ability to put together finished units gets progressively worse  :'(
For instance, with my Provincials, the New Jersey Blues currently counts 6 finished painting, the Virginia Regiment 2, and Pennsylvania 1. I suppose at a pinch I can group them together into a slightly disparate looking combined unit of 9 until I get time to finish more :)

The Preacher/Parson from the Settlers Defending Command & Characters pack, the original rough concept sketch I made showed him with pince-nez specs, but while sculpting the face, I decided the figure really didn't need them as he worked very well without them for the sort of character I wanted, so I left them off  :)

That makes 4 of the characters sketched for the pack already on the website, the other 2 are all but complete, so I'll photograph them and get the pics up on here very soon.  :D

Another outstanding character for  a  '18th C. Horror' game (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51419.0) -if located in a Protestant country, but not specifically of 'Colonial Gothic (http://www.rogue-games.net/Colonial-Gothic/)' / 'A Devil in Jersey (http://bogdanwaz.blogspot.fr/search/label/A%20Devil%20in%20Jersey)' nature, it could equally be set in Reformed Europe.

Edit: 18th C. 'socializing' Catholic priests did not wear their cassock, but dressed in black 'secular' clothes; their only distinguishing features were the (black pipped white) priestly collar and a tiny calotte over their tonsure:
If some priests dressed so to enter the wittiness contests of fashionable salons, one can suppose a priestley  field operative (a jesuit of the C.R.O.C. (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=49766.msg584536#msg584536)? A Papal Assassin of Iscariota (http://www.drunkendragoonproductions.com/18thcentimagi-nation/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=120) - not as comely as this one (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=49673.msg593028#msg593028)?) would wear such practical clothes when 'evil hunting'. Thus Galloping Major's Preacher, painted with a black (pipped white) collar, becomes a 'combat priest' (in Gévaudan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmbC2XZWZA8), maybe, or in Nouvelle France (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAlMJTbeI6g)?). Most of the 'armed settlers' would also fit perfectly.

Not sue where your picture comes from, but I'm guessing "The Patriot"? If I'd had that pic, it would certainly have gone into my reference file.
I wanted my chap to have the feel of an archetypal 18th century parson, and one who wasn't afraid to give the Lord some hands-on assistance  :D

Here are the last 2 of the 6 characters for the Settlers Defending Command & Characters pack, as promised. The lower of the two I think of as my Innkeeper, but wearing his tradesman's apron with the 'bib' buttoned to his waistcoat in classic 18th century style, he could easily be a merchant or craftsman of any sort.  :)

I am pleased there will be a Settlers Defending pack available soon.  Please let me know when.  I have many settlers from your line milling about aimlessly that need guidance.  I will mount an oreder for two of those packs and perhaps a few others.

I was able to attend Historicon in Fredricksburg, VA.  Three friends and I visited Gettysburg (with a tour guided by Scott Mingus).  Highly recommended!  Then we attended Historicon and walked the battlefield (in town) at Fredricksburg.  Then we visited Chancellorsville and had a tour of tht battlefield with the historian of the park service.  Also highly recommended!

I do not remember your agent having a booth at Historicon.  Did I miss him?

Have you thought any more about some additional seamen for the F&IW line?  The one I have is great and needs a crew to assist him with the ships.

Thanks again for producin this fine line of figures.  Ins't it a shame how life (family, job, bills, etc.) gets in the way of the hobby pursuits.  I am planning a Fort Detroit game that will feature GM figures, as dsoon as the painting is done.  Okay, it will be months before it is ready, but the intent is there.

The first 3 of the 6 figures for the pack of Anglo-American Militia with bayonets - the other 3 are in progress. As well as militia, these will be especially suited for use as Provincials before uniforms were issued, or to represent the provincial troops from any of the colonies which did not issue uniforms, or just to give added variety to other provincial units.  :)

This guy is going to be awesome for the conflicts prior to the FIW.  Prior to the FIW, It was mostly fiery Catholic Priests riling up the Natives and leading them against the English settlers.  I've been waiting for a nice Godly man to lead the war parties for a bit.  This gent fits the bill very well!

GM, I think some of your brilliant miniatures have a much wider spread use then the F&IW, especially for 18th century horror.

I recently bought your excellent Civilian pack with the priest, but because I do not game the F&IW have been reluctant to pick up some of the other gems scattered throughout your ranges. I have little use of general F&IW troop types, which the majority of the packs comprise of.

I am particularly interested in pistol (and sword) armed officer types.

Is there any chance you could make a pack available with such "personalities", to cater to a wider market?

What a great character Lance - Boniface to a tee!

'I'll show you such ale!—Here, tapster, broach number 1706, as the saying is.—Sir, you shall taste my Anno Domini —I have lived in Lichfield, man and boy, above eight-and-fifty years, and, I believe, have not consumed eight-and-fifty ounces of meat. I have fed purely upon ale; I have eat my ale, drank my ale, and I always sleep upon ale. Now, sir, you shall see! Your worship's health. [Drinks.] Ha! delicious, delicious! Fancy it burgundy, only fancy it, and 'tis worth ten shillings a quart'.

The finishing you have performed on these figures is very good.  I look at the same figures on my painting table and they just do not display the same swagger and elan as yours.  I admit they only have a prime coat as yet, but I must labor long and hard to equal your results.  I had to look at my versions as soon as I saw the pictures of yours on LAF, just to assure myself they were indeed the same figures.  You have set a hard standard to match.  I tried earlier with the Provincial Officer to match your paint job and I saw then I still have a "ways" to go.  These are very good.  Thanks for showing them to us.

Don't get too depressed. At 3 feet distance on a wargame table there will be no discernible difference.

Here's FIW AAM4 Anglo-American Militia with Bayonets, with the last figure in place  :)

I'll put up the command pack later, hitherto I had only shown 2 of the 6 figures.
I need to update the pre-order pic in the shop too, before it ends in a few days.

I've been gearing up for my pre-ordered Militia to arrive.  I found this great site of a New England reenactment group that portrays militia.  There are a few pictures on this page but more importantly some links to members flickr accounts with lots more pictures.

It's hard for me to decide on colors for non-uniform troops so references like these help.  Though I do try to emulate Lance's great paint work when available :)

That's a very good reference source for painting fergal, I've seen some of these pictures before, but not all of them.
You'll probably get yours painted well ahead of mine, so here's my plan for colour 'palette':
Lots of browns of various shaded ("the Yankees do so love a brown coat") from very rich browns down through duller hues to sandy stoney colours, then a fair mix of greys, other colours in smaller amounts chiefly on waistcoats, hose etc.

The Anglo-American Militia Pre-Order should be sent out next week, a little later than planned.
I'm including an extra figure in the pre-order deal bringing it up to 26 figures. This fierce Mohawk allied warrior with tomahawk, threatening or about to strike or, has been awaiting the right opportunity to appear since I sculpted him some time ago. It was originally intended that he would appear in a pack of Mohawk with hand-to-hand weapons, but I've changed that plan, for now at least; the bow-armed fifth pack of Mohawk should appear this year, but the hand-to-hand pack won't. Instead I've decided to use this figure as a Limited Release figure.
What does this mean?
Well, he'll go out with the pre-orders of this release (I managed to squeeze him into a production mould), but not with the Unit Deal that will go up on the shop once the pre-orders are out. He will probably also appear elsewhere later, I can't say where as yet.
So, anyone who has ordered the Anglo-American Militia Pre-Order will receive this chap as a thank you for their patience in awaiting delivery, anyone ordering in the few days before the pre-order comes down will get one as an added bonus.

Cheers,
Lance

I picked up a batch of Donnybrook rules at Vapnartak  :)
Not specific to the French & Indian War period, though encompassing it in its scope, this new set of rules is rapidly gaining popularity among skirmish gamers. The extensive rule book is full colour throughout and beautifully produced, packed with photographs and background information. At least equally important to most of us, I believe, is that the rules needed during the course of play accompany the book in the form of a two-sided quick reference card.
More details on the Wargames Rules & Books page of the website.
The provincial soldier shown will be sent out with copies ordered from our site  8)

I’ve painted an officer from FIW AAM3 Anglo-American Militia Command. I chose to paint the coat and breeches in a rich deep brown, with contrasting waistcoat, as shown in many portraits of the period of wealthy gentlemen in the American colonies of the period.  :)

What about the female armed settlers?
Maybe along this lines
(http://www.cmhg.gc.ca/cmh/book_images/high/v1_c5_s20_ss00_03.jpg)

but more aged and in a typical 18th C. garb? (http://www.teletek.fr/usr/film/image/borg05.jpg)
(I'm sure a gorgeous version of this one, if probably less 'historical' -but a tricorne would 'label' her '18th C.'- would be a success:

Though a 'Lace Wars Madeleine Jarret de Verchères' (14 old) mini would also be of some use?

I'm afraid you'll judge such minis (though like the previous suggestions with a potential wider market than only the FIW, being of use for many 'adventure' games from pirates to the Beast of Gévaudan, be they purely 'historical' or spiced with some Fantasy (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=51419.msg603469#msg603469) elements), even if made 'on foot' only, would be 'too much' for your 'FIW' range? Though they suggest a kind of 'Last of the Mohicans' journey...

Ideally -as was almost the tradition for 'fantasy adventurers' minis in the old 'Dungeons & Dragons' days- each 'character' should be available on foot and riding (http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/media/catalog/product/a/n/an001-w3.jpg). Of course you'll not venture sculpting and casting *horses* for the FIW, but maybe you could produce 'riding' minis (and the separate musket in its saddle holder) to be combined with horses bought elsewhere: afaik at least Spencer Smith / Tradition and Minden list 'civilian' horses for both sexes that can be ordered separately?

@The Gray Ghost

Over at Jay's blog he shows this photo for comparison:

Based on that, I think Redoubt and North Star look like good matches and Front Rank okay too. Eureka, Perry, Foundry look smallish. The thing about the GM minis is not so much the height - it is their thickness/heft.

And I would avoid mixing units with Conquest/Warlord though based on my personal experience as you can see at the my blog post:
http://optio82.blogspot.com/2014/03/breaking-down-boxes-fiw-minis-arriving.html

I plan on mixing some AW Minis in with mine and North Star.
Ed

I just grabbed this quote from over at the TMP boards:
Quote
I use Redoubt and Galloping Major with my Northstar figures. They all tend to be large and similarly bulky, but mix almost perfectly. I recently played against my friend who used his own yet-to-be released French regulars and Conquest Indians which look a lot smaller than my figs. However, on the table, they all looked great and I really couldn't see any difference in height and proportion. Therefore, I agree with the OFM!

Abdul666lw,

Thanks for the input, some great pictures there, I've saved the ones I didn't already have into a folder, I especially like the character ones from Brotherhood of the Wolf, which I haven't watched for ages, I must try to make time to watch it again.

The armed settler women will be along, and I think you'll like some of the ideas I have.
I fully agree that mounted characters should have a dismounted version, and even though the F&IW is very much an infantry war, the odd mounted/dismounted character will start to appear - and who knows where it will lead  ;)

As for sculpting horses, I've done a couple already - you'll find pictures of one on this page:

so no need to use any "strays"  :D

Yet I'm afraid this one

(from the very swashbuckling Le Scorpion comics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Scorpion)) may be, unfortunately, more than a little (http://www.bdouebe.net/img/scorpion/scorpion4couv.jpg) 'too much (http://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/0/9241/891862-001.jpg)'?

Btw I discussed her on a TMP thread devoted to 'Beast of Gevaudan' games and miniatures (http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=331382&page=1). Canadian armed settlers are ideal for such games even if located in 'Old' France, and movies such as Le Poil de la Bête (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1517506/combined) (trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAlMJTbeI6g))and Ginger Snaps Back (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365265/) (trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVTPx8vl-4A)) show that similar 'adventures' (without or with 'Lacepulp / Lacepunk extras (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=64347.0) -or worse (http://mcmdgames.blogspot.fr/search/label/Early%20American%20Horror), even far worse (http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.fr/search/label/Strange%20Aeons%2018th%20century)) can bet set in Nouvelle France.

Thanks Lance, all your Anglo Americans are individual characters and need to be painted as such. We need a few casualties, personalities and some bearded French trapper types. I might be mistaken but are all your F&I  clean shaved. THE CID.

That's right mate, no beards so far in the FIW range, one or two may appear later on the sort of figures you mention, but generally speaking, the C18 was not great for fans of facial hair (I say this as a chap who has sported beards of one style or another virtually all my adult life :D), although French grenadiers etc will have moustaches as they did.
Casualties and more character packs will appear - though I feel more of a need to get out more troop types first, any views on that?

Cheers,
Lance

Troops first. A club I used to belong to tried using wounded figures to show a unit's moral status. When they gave that system up & rebased for a new set of rules the Prussian player included the wounded into the units. He increased the Prussian army by about 30% (1 dying or wounded figure took up the room of 2 standing figures on a base)
Now although this is a good argument for more wounded, it applies only if you are fighting with units, I do my French Indian wars as a skirmish, although due to people like Lance (making sooooo many nice figures) I may have to rebase to full units........  Hey Ho, 'The more things change the more they stay the same,.

Giles has painted a mix of figures from Anglo-American Militia and Settlers Defending packs and based them up on four figure bases to serve as loyalist militia with his AWI armies. Lots more of Giles' pictures are on the Customers' Gallery page of the website.

I've just posted a temporary deal on the online shop - it'll be up for only 2 weeks, then it'll come down.  :o
It's a "Militia Firing Line Deal" and consists of both packs of Anglo-American Militia Firing Line (FIW AAM1 & 2), the first two packs of Anglo-American Settlers Defending (FIW AAC1 & 2) and the Anglo-American Militia Command and Characters, plus 2 Soldiers Free. That's 32 different soldiers for a special price of £42 plus postage. The idea is to provide a big "force" of militia with loads of variety.

As a temporary "shelf clearance" deal, we're offering this excellent book at a big reduction: £4.50 against our usual retail price of £8.50 (published at £9.99). As a bonus, it'll come to you with 2 Soldiers Free figures, the "Colonial Officer", who I've always pictured as Johnson's man Croghan, and the limited release Mohawk warrior, who hitherto accompanied the pre-orders of the Anglo-American Militia pre-order - so if you don't have one, this is your chance to get one. Limited while stocks of the book last.

Our first British regular infantryman to be shown. This particular pose is "push your bayonet" which is the next 'move' from "charge high your bayonet", the classic British army bayonet fighting stance for which the redcoat was famed and feared.

Will that release coincide with the sailors being ready to ship?  If so I would like to add those new Mohawks to my sailors pre-order.

Thanks.

Thanks chaps,

ffrum - I can't say for sure yet on release date, but they will probably be just ahead of the sailors  :)

I know abdul, I need time to get back to the ladies  ;) :-*
After the first batch of sailors are out the main emphasis in my FIW sculpting must be on getting the first releases of British regulars and Compagnies Franches moved along; I'll try to fit in a few ladies on the side - oo-er  :D

Great news, hopefully by the time they are released I will have enough space on my painting table to accommodate them :)

I thought I would just inject a bit of colour into this thread with a picture of some of my painted figures from earlier released French forces: Canadian militia and Huron Allies:

Nice! Stuff is looking better and better. In what capacity would the sailors show up during the French Indian War? I don't recall coming across that many naval battles or coastal raids, or are they meant for other theaters?

Not a lot of naval engagements in the usual sense, but shore parties from Monongahela to Quebec and beyond, lots of potential for involvement with sloops etc used on the Great Lakes and the more navigable waterways. A couple examples are the contingent from HMS Norwich under Lt Spendlowe with Braddock and the Royal Navy's ongoing involvement in the Lake George-Lake Champlain corridor from 1757. Royal Navy detachments have been used in lieu of or to support the regular army in all sorts of climates and theatres over the centuries, lots of scope for using them  :)
I'll certainly be using them in coastal raids (real or imaginary) as well as for taking on the enemy and assisting with transport on land and water.
For me they add even more variety to a period with variety of participants in heaps.
Of course, I won't be restricting their use to North America in the FIW, there's loads of other potential for them too.  :D
I hope that helps start a few ideas going  ;)

How about a set or two of Frontiersmen?  I'm thinking Natty Bumpo (Hawkeye), Simon Kenton, Daniel Boone.

Remember guys that there are some ships available for the Great Lakes actions from Laser DreamWorks (http://www.laserdreamworks.com/28mm-ships/) that might work nicely for these types of actions.

IIRC there was a fair bit of naval raiding against French settlers in Acadia

Nick, I've thought about a Natty/Hawkeye figure, the only trouble is, which visualisation to go with   :?

Go for this:

Hawkeye series written by Ulf Uller, dunno if they were translated into English.

I think you are saying that wrong!

Nick, I've thought about a Natty/Hawkeye figure, the only trouble is, which visualisation to go with!!    8)  There are soooo many awesome ones to choose from!!

I might have overdone it with the 'awesome' part as I know that's more of a yank thing.  Why not have a Hawkeye character pack?  6 different Hawkeyes?   I'd buy it, many families intermarried at the time so there would have been many frontiersmen around that wouldn't look out of place.  Basically people love Last of the Mohicans, and FIW players buy LotM figures.  Get in there Lance :)

Basically a pack of guys in Indian leggings and hunting shirts, maybe 6 different heads, bareheaded, slouch hat, coonskin hat? In advancing poses.

Already quite happy with the new French Marines, but I agree that a LOTM pack would do down nicely.

Yes a LOTM pack would be very welcome. ;D

I'd probably suggest going with the Daniel Day lewis look and definitely include Uncus and Chingachgook.

In the meantime i've just made some alterations to the Redoubt ones and will try and get them painted up soon.

Thanks for the info. They're really nice figures, and it's great to see anything that hasn't already been done many times before for the FiW.

Speaking of which, if you're going to do LoTM, I wouldn't copy the movie figs as that's already been done very well by another company. Frankly, I'd rather see personalities from the Monongahela or some other historical engagement rather than from literature...

Thanks Axabrax  8)

That's a matter of opinion.  I haven't seen a set I like yet and I've seen all the ones that are available.

The Conquest LOTM set is very nice, except for the faces on Alice and Cora.  There is always room for a better set.  Besides, I doubt the Conquest minis would match well with the Galloping Major models.

I can second what the last poster said - the faces on the ladies are not of the same standard and next to Galloping Major look more like children.

Well, i have to agree on the faces. They are not the best.
Lets hope Galloping Major does some characters packs. :D
Daniel Boone and the Kenton brothers would be welcome as well.
For ideas do please consult the John Jenkins Designs miniatures. Although 54mm i get lots of painting inspiration and conversions ideas on them. :)

For a character pack I'd like to see something like Tragedy at Ticonderoga.  You could have George Howe and Duncan Campbell.
