Inspired by Galland to post a project in progress rather than a finished ship, I took a few pictures of the board I'm building for a convention in Kansas City next month. This is not the finished terrain but I will continue to post till complete, or go completely insane. Posting this is more to show myself the project is moving forward as to not become too overwhelmed to finish. The plan is to complete a 28ft x 8ft board with several ports and Pirate like locations or go completely mad, and start posting to the Lovecraft board.

Impresive!
-
very impressive indeed
-
Great looking board :-* :-* :-*
Are you doing it all yourself?
What are you using for the water?
Really like the buildings, are they scratch built or bought?
-
Hi Wingnut,
The boards are looking good - the three storey half-timber house looks particularly impressive.
Ramirez
-
Thanks Gents,
Are you doing it all yourself?
Yes, this is a one man outfit. These were about 12 hour days over the weekend.
What are you using for the water?
Florescent light panel covers. I spray paint blotches in two tones of blue on the smooth side then turn the textured side up. They come in 4ft by 2ft sections for about $7 a panel.
Really like the buildings, are they scratch built or bought?
None of the buildings are scratch, the French port consists of Miniature building Authority buildings. The British port has buildings from Brigade games, Games of War and Miniature Building Authority.
-
Those are some beautiful gaming boards. What convention are you planning on using them at?
-
WOW! :o Very, very nice!
-
Brilliant - the sea and how you created it is really impressive.
-
What convention are you planning on using them at?
Border Wars in KC.

That can't be right!! Are you mad?... Or is it a typo? A 28x8ft board or do you mean two 8x8ft boards?
-
No typo...28 FT by 8Ft or seven 4ft by 8ft tables.
28mm ships are generally 8 to 24 inches long making them hard to maneuver on an 8ft table. The game is being built for a convention setting, truth is I don't have enough room in my house to assemble it all at once. It currently supports about 13 players and will expand to 20 when finished. The pictures only show three of the tables.

Blimey o_o

-
Impressive - and reassuring since I am in the throes of a similar project, though not as far along as you. But I have a slightly better hold on my sanity - I'm doing it in 15 mm! (well, only slightly)
How many towns, etc? I plan on five towns: British, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Pirate, plus a couple of native villages and some other locations - islands to maroon, islands to bury treasure, sunken reefs to cause shipwrecks, etc. I'm anxiously awaiting the new Blue Moon Africa range this summer to populate my native villages. Also, how many ships to you anticipate in your game? Rules planned?
Very nice work. Hope to see the posted photos after the convention. 28' x 8'? Wow!
-
FifteensAway,
Sounds like you've been Playing Sid Meire's Pirates also :)
I have about 16 ships, 10 are finished. I have two towns in the works. a cannibal Island, a nice Shipwreck shallows in the works, a completed random Island for marooning, a lost Mayan ruin in the works, and have toyed with the idea of a Spanish fort and a Small Dutch trading town. Most will not be complete on the first run of the game. The rules I wrote. The game system is set up for Man to Man, Mob/formation, ship to ship and Ship to shore Battles. It has about the same complexity as Full Thrust if your familiar with that system. The Game I'm running at the convention is less combat oriented and more goal motivated. Merchants and pirates collect gold, Governors trade for goods, cannibals gain points by eating people. Each are worth points and in the end the one with the most points walks away with a prize, probably one of the small "Old Glory" Ships. The worst pirate also will end up with a special prize suggested by a friend of mine fitting the sailing skills displayed.

Wow, looks impressive. Even more impressive is that you convinced a convention to hand over that much table space! It's not like Border Wars is the largest convention in the world or anything...! You must have run some pretty good games for them before to get them to fork over this amount of room to you!!!
Good luck! Keep the pictures coming!
-
Wingnut,
Yes, Sid's game is what fills the down time when I need a pirate fix. I, too, have 16 ships - all with crews. And what really gives me a kick is many of the crews (48 figures each) are all unique figures - but duplicate figures in other crews. Staying tuned...
-
Wonderful ambition. Great execution. Coming together beautifully. Love the textured panels for the sea... Wonder if they are available here in the UK... ::)
-

Florescent light panel covers. I spray paint blotches in two tones of blue on the smooth side then turn the textured side up. They come in 4ft by 2ft sections for about $7 a panel.
I've been looking for such items but they are hard to come by here...
-
Amazon Has them:
http://www.amazon.com/Plaskolite-1420083A-Cracked-Acrylic-Lighting/dp/B000V28HO8
The shipping cost stinks but it does at least give you the info you need for stock numbers. I think lowe's and Home Depot may do international shipping. If you took the stock numbers in to a local building supply place I would bet they could order them.

Great looking boards, just a quick question about the palm trees where did you get them? :)
-
Don't know if it would help, but the Games Workshop, when they built their skull island board, used builders chaulk/ White silicon for waves and to hide the joins between cliffs and the water. It really looked the part!
-
On Palm trees:
I originally found them in a Junk store in South Carolina but managed to track them back to a distribution company for cake supplies I think somewhere in Ohio. I inquired about a bulk order from the local store Called Wilson's Five and Dime in Greenville, SC. They had never had such a request so the humored me and asked how many I wanted. I said "Give me what ever $100 dollars would buy..." They agreed and ordered them. I received about a week later a in a tattered cardboard box from China 17 lbs (7.71 Kilos) of plastic palm trees.
The Caulk is a good idea, I may have to experiment with it in the future. The whole thing is a transportable (Believe it or not) convention game so I will have to find a way to hide the seems with out fusing the pieces together.
I built the Cannibal Island today and cleaned up a bunch of other things. Will try to post by Sunday night....
-
Man, you got to stop building this fast, I am getting rashes here.
Could you perhaps take a picture of one of the palms please? I found some while browsing the internet, but I would love more cheapo palms! :)

Brilliant - that Fench town really gives the feeling of being run down.
I like the sandy beaches - are they the bases of the whole town/islands?

The towns have rectangular platform bases. The beaches are thin overlapping plywood with beveled edges. I used a belt sander to save time. The beaches form a right angle on the back side that I push up to the platform.

I demand you show us how you prepared you palm trees or I (by popular vote) will be forced to kick you in the foot, not so hard as to break or fracture it but hard enough so later that night you will think to yourself. "Man my leg really hurts a lot, that Ninja is an ..."
And thats when you will hear me dropping down from that corner of the ceiling in your bedroom (you know the one can't see cause of the way your bed is turned)..... And then it will all go black.
Your friends will all assume the post was a cry for help and you had actually gone insane. The fecal matter on the walls being the biggest tip off you had gone crazy... and all cause you didn't post about a painted plastic tree...

... OK :?

Fulfilling a request for someone off their Med's...
Palm tree prep.
1)Remove the three palm frawn rings off the stem.
2)Discard awkward top palm frawn for later use as a fern or other ground foliage. It Points strait up due to
molding and looks dumb.
3) the second and third palm ring are intertwined separate them. Put them aside in a pile.
4) Base your palm trunks. Individually or in tree templates. I suggest very large washers for individuals so they don't turn over. For groups I'm using beveled edged 1/8 inch plywood cut in amorphous shapes.
a)Drill holes in Plywood in random locations.
b) Hot glue trunks in Plywood or washer. use lots or glue it just looks like roots. If your using washers
work on aluminum-foil and use cooking spray to keep the glue from sticking to the surface after they
cool.
5) spray paint trunks and bases with Ultra Flat Krylon Fusion brown
http://www.krylon.com/products/camouflage_paint_with_fusion_technology/ (http://www.krylon.com/products/camouflage_paint_with_fusion_technology/)
6) Wallpaper paste the base
7) Flock to your taste.
8 ) Replace Palm frawns all leaves pointing down.
9) Spray leaves with Ultra Flat Krylon Fusion Olive. (yes I realize that they are still on the trunk. The green
settles down on the base lightly coating the highlights of the trunk. Similar to dry brushing. Don't spray
the trunks directly.)
10) Let dry and serve with a light chianti and maybe some fava beans....
There you go Ninja.... Please be very careful with the power tools they can be dangerous and try to use the spray paint in a well ventilated area for all our sakes. :?

Its cool although I do all of my painting and foam cutting in a ninja cave I am always wearing a mask! In hindsight simply asking for such info may have been a more social approach but not very ninja of me.
Joking aside your work is awesome enough for me to have actually looked into flight schedules and taking a few days off of work to head out and see this at the convention in person!
-
Ninja,
Flying in would honor me that you would think so highly of my work. The rest of the Con is small so don't be disappointed. I can vouch for two of the other games there, Shelby West will be running a Vietnam game I helped in the construction of and Grady West's Stalingrad is a sight to behold. If you do Come to KC, there is a must see World War 1 museum that should not be missed by any war gamer. I can also turn you on to some great restaurants in the area.......
If the timing doesn't work out I'm looking at Recruits in the Fall, same area but a larger convention by far.

This project is getting better and better... Thanks for sharing sir!
Where from are these boats by the way?

I cincerely, and I mean this, leave desolace Kansas, and move to Sweden. We need you here. Bring your stuff. I think that we could swamp this poor little country with Pirate gaming together!
-
Galland,
You don't know how much I would like to do that. However the way people are migrating out of the Mid-Western US it might be just as easy to move all of Sweden here.
elhion :
the first two pictures are of The Miniature Building Authority boats. The third is a handy little Games of War tender. The Last is from Ainsty terrain company.

Gorgeous board, my hat is well and truly doffed to you sir!

What a beautiful board! Very inspiring!!! :)

Prize awards:
A prize vessel from Old Glory Shipyards was awarded to the most Successful player, the captain of the French Frigate who used a burning schooner to ignite the British ship of the line.
The unluckiest captain by popular vote was awarded a 5th of Captain Morgan's Spiced Rum and a set of pink child floaties after having his merchant ship taken as a prize by pirates. Left adrift on the damaged pirate sloop where upon rowing to a pygmy savage infested island his remaining crew recovered a lost Inca treasure. After loading it into the longboat his remaining crew were eaten by Cannibals. Alone the Captain in the longboat pulled for the closest French port. Just yards from shore he was intercepted by cutthroat smugglers where he was challenged to an honor duel for the treasure. Consequently both combatants were Mortally wounded. The crew now without leadership mutinied and left with the treasure never to be seen again.
-
Fan-bloody-tastic!! :o :o
So....when are you doing your worldwide tour with the game and coming to Scotland?

That is an awesome board!
Bet it is a lot of fun playing on it, especially with those beautiful ships!

Nice :P and impressive board, Wingnut

Oh, I see from the first picture you kept the trusty superglue handy!! lol lol

I actually had a box of repair tools and patch paint under the table. Neve go to a con without it.
So....when are you doing your worldwide tour with the game and coming to Scotland?
Galland has already asked me to become an Ex-patriot, very tempting but the game requires a u-haul trailer just to take to a convention. Not sure how I would get it overseas :?. Anybody got a cargo plane I could hop a ride on?
Thank you all for the complements.

Easy Galland never threaten a Scotsman with a stick. They're quite dangerous when provoked.
This is a tough choice I'm being offered. On one hand my given name is Scott and I love single malt. On the other hand I REALLY like women with an accent.
Both mind you have proven really bad for my well being.
-
OMG! That table shot was amazing. Get out the straight jacket cuz it is insane!
-
Wow!
-
How about scantily clad women with curves that would make an Italian sports car tremble? That would be here in "sunny" California - we got hail in the central valley yesterday!
Nothing in Kansas? Well, many a year ago, when I was there for my sister's wedding I formulated a theory that if you took down all the power lines between the northern border and the gulf that if you dropped a really big beach ball - really, really big - it would roll all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico with a nice bounce over the Ozarks.
But back to that sort of nice looking pirate game you've put together (lol), you've come up with the best name I've ever seen in gaming or model railroading (both of which I've done for a long, long time). Upon bended knees I bow my head to the floor several times with palms stretched out as far as they can reach. The name? Port Manteau. Well, done, lad.
-
. The name? Port Manteau. Well, done, lad.
You sir are the first to appreciate that, I would buy you a fine scotch for your mastery of the language if we ever meet. I also promote you to an "English Major" in my 1/60th scale Caribbean world. Bravo!
You are quite correct about the Great Plains, it lacks geography. I think the reason they didn't call it the Plain-Plains is not to sound like a stutter. Northwest Arkansas and southern Missouri are very nice, Clear rivers, deciduous forests, Deep lakes. It also for the most part lacks the weather of our bordering disaster film neighbors.
Please no virtual prostration, I play to my audience and as long as you guys encourage me I'll keep building.
Thank you very much for your complements.

I am soo going to this event next year. I had a serious mind to make an impromptu trip for this year. Great stuff, it looks like it was a blast to play.

Any chance you can post some more pictures of your shipwreck? Cheers!

Congratulations anyway, the tables are wonderful ;D

In which case it would be the 'Union flag' (I think)
Anyway, as a Scotsman in England, I can offer you lodgings on your way north....
Great, great game
-
The game was taking Place at the opening of the War of Spanish Succession, !701-ish. The Flags are not accurate to the period, which might explain the Ghost ship which clearly was not seen until the 1792 ::)
I can't really take credit for the Respect/Disrespect of the flags, I asked one of my group to skirt the table without supervision, then we proceeded to acquire a 18yr old Glenfiddich shortly after. Scotch hinders quality control but inversely raises margin of error tolerance.
I will as requested try to get pictures of the Ship Wreck up soon. most of the stuff is still packed up after the trip home from Kansas. I'm encouraging anyone who is interested in playing to keep up with the Recruits Website, with any luck they will allow me the space required for the game. I have started on a new round of ships the first two of 6, the Brig by Minimi and the East Indiaman by Old Glory.

So the madness continues....
The table space for the convention that takes place 2 weeks from now has expanded to a pair of 24ft by 8ft tables and two side tables that contain a Dutch Trading port and a Lost Mayan temple. The Mayan Island pictured below is a collaboration between fellow terrain builder Steve Hobbs and myself. This is still really far from finished. The structure is all insulation Styrofoam sheets with a polymer coating from a company called Hot Wire Foam Factory. More to come.....

Maybe more nuts should have wings! Now you've got me thinking what to do with my native villages and their islands. (Got one village populated - not painted - courtesy of Irregular Miniature's lovely new 15 mm African natives).
Pirates are an addiction.

WOW! What a beautiful board!! :-*
-
This thread, and naturally its content, is by all accounts adictive. I must confess that every time I open it, I expect not only great modelling and figures, but also great wordplay and abuse of the english language!
-
Thank you fine Lords and Scalawags alike.
I can't take all the credit here. A great deal of effort, time and resources from my cohort and long time friend Steve went into this construction for the Recruits convention. He has traveled the past two weekends from Cookville, Tennessee to Springdale, Arkansans to help. For our Euro-readers that is the equivalent of a drive between Paris and Berlin in about 10 hours. Except with Memphis instead of Belgium in the middle, so you loose the chocolate, gain barbecue but you have to smell the Mississippi as you cross.
I'm putting in a lot of time to make sure this project gets finished and will be taking off a week from work before we leave. I'm actually as excited to see it assembled as you guys are as my house is far to small to assemble it in.
Galland,
The best way to get back at the English Language is creative writing. I wish there was a way to run this game in Europe for you guys. I just can't find a reasonable way to transport it across the Atlantic.
FifteensAway,
There would be a lot of angry squirrels....
Hammers,
" never ending " No sadly, we will have to end it eventually or we will have to apply for a land grant. ::)
Thanks again; I hope to have some less-grainy pictures up once the flocking and foliage is on the board.

Aaaarggh I love this bridge between the cliffs :-* How did I survive all these years without one? I need to make one too! ::)
Thanks for these wonderful pics

Can't wait to see the temple.

Easy! Just bring it to Little Wars (Chicago area), and they can fly in (and if they can't, at last I can play)!
-
Ahhh, true marvelous, inspirational, gaming madness!!! If this is the type of gaming insanity that goes on at Recruits, I may have to make my way out there one of these times, straightjacket in hand to join in.
-
Quite a few of my club's members follow your blog posts as we have started getting more into Pirates. What you have built is incredible.
Here is another plug for Little Wars in the Chicago area. Very nice venue with a nice hotel, theater, spa and nearby shopping for those not inclined to spend all day gaming. I know we would love to help fill up your game slots. :D
-
Chicago is a great town. Museum of Science and Industry, Captured U-boat, Natural history museum, and the Archeology museum is outstanding. Man is that a long haul with a single axle trailer.......
Was considering Nash-con but I'm not committed to anything beyond Recruits. Any of you get down that way?
-
Maybe LW attendees could come up with a
bribe incentive to get you there... ;)
I can see how Nash-con would be a nicer drive from Arkansas if your in the north east part of the state. I have never been to Nashville but if your at Nash-con that would be tempting.
-
I'm enjoying your insanity very much! Thanks for posting. Richard
-
syrinx0,
Nash-Con is really a good crowd, their hospitality is not to be discounted. As of now I haven't approached them about setting up yet. A game with this sized footprint in a convention center requires a lot of room. Nash-con is in one really expensive room in SpringHill. I don't want to plan ahead without approval from the organization because this juggernaut of a game is larger than some Con's I have attended. It actually becomes a people gaming per table square foot issue.
So I have to make sure the Con is willing to have this large of an event at the expense of many smaller games in the same space if it is limited.
The reason I would like to go to Nashville is my Cohort Steve lives in the area, and I owe it to him to game in his area after the trips he has made to complete this project. The point I guess is there is no schedule beyond Recruits at the moment because i've never moved a game this large that far. So all options beyond this weekend are open, Bribes withstanding......

Chicago is a great town (to visit)
Fixed that for you. I grew up in Illinois and punched-out asap.
I would go to Nash-Con if I knew this beast would be there. Your work is inspiring.
-
Dooms Dave,
Thanks man. Glad somebody's got my back.....
-
In spite of Doomsdave wimping out and running down south away from the cold, he is right about your work. It is inspiring. :)
Thanks for sharing and hauling it around as much as you have.

You called it right brother. After 2 years in Korea, I had enough cold weather XP to last a lifetime. Last Christmas I was in my front lawn in shorts and sandals so when you're ready to pull the ripcord, come on down. ;)

OK the video makes the Patterson-Gimlin film look lie Spielberg but you should be able to make out the mist emerging from the waterfall and rolling on the river top.
http://fistfullofseamen.blogspot.com/2010/01/documenting-progress.html
Now if I can just make a rainbow at the falls.......
-
I hear that every year from a few friends who moved to Atlanta Doomsdave. Never say never I guess but summer down south is way too hot.
-
The mist looks pretty cool wingnut. Not sure you could simulate a rainbow statically. Maybe a small pen light shining up through a colored tissue paper filter?
-
Wingnut,
You can do the rainbow and the small flashlight idea will work but don't use tissue paper, use colored gels which you should be able to find at a very good photo shop. Or you can make one yourself with a stiff cellophane (maybe from some package of something you've bought) with a translucent rainbow painted on it. It's all a matter of proper positioning but the terrain in the photo looks like you should be able to get away with it. Man, a rainbow and a misting waterfall is way over the top. Super cool! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* Hope you can make it work and, if you do, post another video showing it in action.
Best of luck with your game!
-
Looking fabulous. Bon voyage shipmate! ;)

Alas I am getting married and so will not be able to get out of town till for some time or I would be there for sure!
Wingnut could you let me know/pm me where you bought your virgin cork and where I should go to look at or order those light panels! I am going to give a smaller board a shot!

Married! there goes your days of hunting Booty...
The plastic light panels are easy enough to find at Home Depot, but virgin cork? not sure what that is.
-
I thought your cliff faces were made with cork, I guess I was incorrect upon closer inspection. That does however make your whole project even cooler...

ninja,
they are blue styrofoam covered with a compound from this company:
