I just wanted to show off my old river troll I just repainted from childhood. I kept her in a box all those years as I knew that the model could come in handy some day.
I rebased her, gave her some greenstuff with a nose- and boob-job and a tail. All trolls should have a tail in my opinion but most companies seem to totaly miss this so I corrected the model.
I intend to use her with the Songs of... rules
You have to forgive me for putting all this pictures on the same figure here but I cant help my selves. The world has to know…

VERY COOL & different take on the Old Beasty...I like the skin tones you chose. VERY NICELY DONE!
-
Love it!
I've always had a soft spot for those minis.
-
Superb. I have never picked these trolls up as they were too expensive when new and now they go for too high prices on ebay :-[
One day my precious ;)
-
The stone trolls were rather nice too from back then.
Great work on the scales on the river troll Engel - I too rather like the colour choices you've gone for - top work!
-
Ace paintjob, Engel!
-
Thank you all for your kind words. I guess I need to find her a bridge to lurk under now…
-
Love it. Brave choice of colours and didn't it pay off!
Got the old marsh troll here and the new river trolls plastic box, but have been just thinking green. Going to go out on a brave tangent now thanks to you.

Dave, if you want non-standard fantasy troll inspiration google John Bauer (http://www.google.com/search?q=%22john+bauer%22&hl=sv&prmd=ivnsuo&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ryfBTcG5GIvQsgba6qzCBQ&ved=0CDoQsAQ&biw=1259&bih=625), a swedish artist from the early 1900s. Awesome fantasy drawings, done for various swedish folk tales!
-
My inspiration of the choice of colors to this troll should be familiar with all Swedish people( I think it’s written in the Swedish law books... ;)) and maybe some Dutch people?
-
Great painting, love the purple skin tones and the slimey looking fish, great stuff!
Damien
-
Well this may not be a troll but at least she is in the picture, tracking some no-good kids...
The children I think are from Hasslefree.
What I should use them for I don’t know right now, but you can guess they’re up to no good, littering the forest with breadcrumbs, demolishing some poor old lady’s gingerbread house or eating three bowls of bear-oatmeal.
They are wicked I say.
-
Wicked.. and up to no good.... lol
-
a bit of a shock, seems you have painted up my wife on a bad binder, or when she sees the price of the new mini order... great paint job love it!

As a poor farmer your life is not getting any easier when those foul goblins running about and stealing your crops.
What you need are a couple of these monsters. A big angry mastiff will scare the goblins away and the crops will be yours without any more troubles.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/10/mastiffs.html
-
Fantastic Troll - perhaps the wonderful thing about Trolls is that everybody seems to have their own ideas of what they are like. So here with some inspiration - music to paint Trolls to... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGywo81G6lk
-
Nice job mounting the doggies each a bit differently. Didn't notice first that they're (almost) all the same sculpt! =)
-
The way you get your troll skin-tone and dog fur tones is amazing. Nice work!
-
Thanks all.
Yeah, funny thing to get 4 of the same dog in a random blister with 5 models...
-
Those mastiffs are very nice - what line is that? Are those from a Reaper familiar pack, or some other source?
-
The dogs are from warlord games.

-
Great work on the dogs! :-*

Trollbrothers from Red Box Games

As a poor goblin your life is not getting any easier when those foul farmers running about and stealing ”your” crops.
What you need are a couple of these monsters. A big angry troll will scare the farmers away and the crops will be yours without any more troubles.
Many many more pictures of the trolls on here.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/10/trollbrothers.html
I went for natural colors of brown and green so the could blend in to the forest.
-
They look fantastic! :-*
-
Thank you.
This project was originally intended to be a (another) side project, but the models are taking a grip on me…
-
This is some really fine paintwork. Love the rich natural tones. Following the project with keen interest.
-
Very, very nice skintone and overall colouring. Echoing the comments about the naturalism.
-
All very nice indeed :-* :-* :-*
-
Nice work on those troll bros mate!
-
You've done some VERY COOL & WELL DONE pieces for your Fantasy Project, but I really love the Troll Bros...both the minis & your lovely paint work.
-
Great work on some excellent subjects. I debated whether to get the RBG Trolls for my own dungeon bash project, but seeing as I've got a couple of the Bob Olley/Ral Partha Trolls lying around I thought I'd use them instead. Anyway, I look forward to seeing this collection expand over the coming weeks.
-
Thank you all. It warms my heart to read all the nice comments.
As this is a rather slow moving project I got time to change the path it treads. I haven’t decided exactly how I will continue.
Im thinking on making it into a John Bauer theme. Adding more trolls and mysterious creatures and the landscape from his paintings and Nordic mythology.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c7/John_Bauer_1915.jpg
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fd/%C3%84nnu_sitter_Tuvstarr_kvar_och_ser_ner_i_vattnet.jpg
I’m not totally sure how I will do with the human residents in my project. I’m thinking either early parts of the medieval times (you can’t beat a knight in shining amour trying to rescue the princess can you ?) or wandering in to an Viking age and introducing many creatures, heroes and stories from them. Anyhow I´m thinking low fantasy.
But I´m leaning more and more into Vikings now.
-
Have you ever read Robert Holdstock's books - the mythago series:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythago_Wood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythago_Wood)
That's allow vikings by the side of knights, cavemen and renaissance musketeers.
Duncan
-
The trolls are most impressive - looking forward to see more of your good work!
:-*
-
Great work on those trolls and fantastic models they are indeed, thanks for sharing!
-
Dijit > Not my cup of tea, but thanks for the tip.
I intend to keep this dark and gritty, low-fantasy.
I made some large stones out of styrofoam to be used as terrain.
And if you’re big enough I guess you could always tip them over onto a smaller creature on the other side…
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xJQrs0EpZtU/TpQmDefOtMI/AAAAAAAAAJM/pB3ziQN2MgM/s1600/P1030201.JPG)
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/10/more-fantasy-terrain.html
A friend asked how I did the bases on the troll brothers so I put together a small tutorial on the technics I used.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/10/fantasy-terrain-tutorial.html
-
Some nice scenery, fits very well with your miniatures.
Your bases are great, too, I agree.
-
Although the photo(s) is a bit too dark to pick out all the details, The Stones look TERRIFIC & add an unsettling atmosphere to the minis. VERY NICELY DONE!
-
Great action picture, Engel. I'm actually painting some of RBG Goblin spearmen at the moment. Little chappies, aren't they?
-
I can't see any reason why you can't have knights and vikings in the same universe. It is fantasy after all and at any rate it's your fantasy setting. It looks like you've got off to a great start.
-
Very interested in this, you seem to favour (i am probably wrong!) the prosaic and 'everyday' over the grandiose and exceptional. Who wants to model or game significant battles when you can do the same for a squabble over some brassicas?
Brilliant brushwork (and photography), it's encouraging me to get started on my own.
-
Very cool stuff! Your style of models/terrain makes me think of all those 80's style fantasy films, like Labyrinth, Dark Sword and Neverending Story.
I'll need to steal your ideas for basing!!
-
Awesome job Engel! :)
-
Thanks all.

I think you up to something. They can’t all running around in magical elven amour and each hero is better than the last and so on.
If all off the peasant is wearing leather jackets, a guy in amour is king.
If I put a small small goblin beside a big troll the troll will seem even bigger.
Andym > Now, when you mention it, I never thought about that but you might be right. Those were some good movies and some of my favorite as a child.
-
Cracking stuff Engel! Love the troll bros, the paint job is brilliant and great choice of mini; I think Tre is the best fantasy sculptor at the moment and have bought lots of his minis. Can't wait to see more of your minis :-*
-
I love the way this whole project is shaping up: dark and natural! If you get a table together it will greatly enhance your pictures of the models if you use it as a backdrop 8)
-
Very cool stuff! Your style of models/terrain makes me think of all those 80's style fantasy films, like Labyrinth, Dark Sword and Neverending Story.
Absolutely! And weren't those films the more interesting ones? :D
-
Hei Engel,
very nice project so far, brilliant paintjobs.
Just an idea, if you want to add some elves to your project then check out the Myrmidion Germani/Dark Elves.
http://myrmidonstudio.blogspot.com/
You have to scroll down.
They could fit in ;)
-
Comsquare > Thanks for the link. Yeah they would fit. And with the right colors I could really make them into the nature spiritual creatures that the northern mythology depicts them as.
Unfortunately they have to wait alittle because I have some other residents to my world waiting half painted.
But I guess I could always buy them now and paint them later of course… hehe :D
-
Looking pretty sweet, I will be ordering some of those trolls soon. Did anyone see that independent movie on troll hunters? For some reason it came to mind..
-
The movie Trollhunter is recommended for anyone who has missed it…
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5tZLW8MUdpo/TphQ24PqmII/AAAAAAAAAJs/w_BdZzJcUNM/s1600/Bj%25C3%25B6rk+4.jpg)
I did a test piece of some birch trees.
Im a bit worried that it will not survive for long at my local game club as I guess it is a bit fragile so im thinking on having it at home and only bring it on special occasions.
Its made out of twigs glued to a base and spraypainted black and then white. After I had painted it I sprayed it with some varnishing and glued on the flock.
The completely “logical” reason because the state the trees are in and some more pictures can you find here…
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/10/birch-trees.html
-
WOW! :o
Those trees look amazing.
Still admiring your bases.........
-
I also managed to take a group pictures of the heroes before the daylight faded to mutch.
Miniatures from Red Box Games.

The Birch Trees are LOVELY. Not leaving them at your club is an excellent idea. Although otherwise Fine Fellows, most gamers I know are ham-fisted oafs of the first magnitude.
-
Very nice Birch trees Engel. Looks like home (up north) after an autumn storm. :)
-
Thats what the goverment wants you to think... ;)

:D Having just seen the preview for The Trollhunter.
Looking great as always, nice to see how this project is developing.
-
Wow!!
Great stuff!
Those trolls look wonderful painted! Really, everything looks wonderful. *applause*
-
The movie Trollhunter is recommended for anyone who has missed it…
I saw the original version and didn't understand a word of course but it was indeed an entertaining movie 8)
-
With more daylight I managed to take some better photos of the miniatures.
hmm Maybe they are a bit too big for this forum.

Lovely work and really fabulous figures! :-*

A small update, some big stones.

Nothing quite like some huge glacial stones for that slightly northern feel. What have you built them from? As I'm looking to add some similar to my own terrain collection.
-
They are made from blue styrofoam. Great building material, lightweight and easy to form.
-

The man's right, ya know! ;)
Supreb work Engel, it all ties in very nicely. :-*

Thanks. Just several layers glued together then carved?
Duncan
-
I just used some spare bits from another project.
The styrofoam I used was maybe 5-6cm in height so I just used a knife and carved some rough forms that I later smoothed with a rasp and then some sandpaper.
-
They look great and perfect for going troll hunting amongst.
-
Very well done. I saw your work and had to order some miniatures from RBG at once.
Thank you for the inspiration. I can't wait to seem more of your work.
Ciao

Gorgeous work mate. I really like what you've done with the RBG gobbos, definitely picking some up come payday. It's really nice to see some Fantasy terrain that doesn't look like Sherwood Forrest, I'll be stealing inspiration for my Circle Orboros table. And my D&D layout... And my Song of Blades & Heroes warbands /sigh
You've got a lot to answer for. You know that?
-
Thanks Splod, and all you others.
Here is a older picture of some of the goblins.
I dont know if I already have showned them but it wouldnt hurt to have them here with the others.
-
Lovely... Those skin tones are gorgeous.
Now if only there were another pack of RBG goblins with hand weapon and shield I'd be a very happy man.
-

Can only agree with you on that point.
-
VERY COOL STUFF! The Goblins & their larger associates look TERRIFIC.
I love the rocks...we have quite a few of those things around here. GREAT WORK!
-
Great thread, I really enjoy the scenery items. I currently use actually rocks for boulders and such, I think I'll have to go styrofoam now.
-
Engel, this project is so inspiring! Might I ask how you do the bases, paint and all? It's the exact look I'm going for but can't quite get it right. :)
-
This is a great project and I look forward to new additions. Consider your moss-covered-boulders idea nicked. I'm guessing you used Woodland Scenics medium or fine turf, right? Regardless, that's what I covered my own rock-piles in on Tuesday and they look great so thanks for the inspiration!
-
Moribund > I have put together a tutorial on how I done the ”area” for the terrain, maybe that could help. The principal is the same either I’m doing a miniature or a piece of terrain in this project.
it doesn’t have base color
Check is out here http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/10/fantasy-terrain-tutorial.html
Hopefully it can help a little, and if it doesn´t you can always ask here. The trick is to use a lot of water in the color so it will spread out and create a natural shading effect on a terrain piece like this.
Funghy-Fipps > Thanks. I don’t remember the exact name of it as I store it in an unmarked bag, but I think you’re right. I´m not totally happy with it but that has to do with the actual color and not the material. I’m thinking on getting something similar but in a different color.
Something like this.
The lack of updates is because I’m currently finishing my roughly 4000pts Eldar army in 40k to tabletop standard. We will be playing an megabattle this weekend so after that I will be free to work on other things again. :)
-
That is a really cool little piece of artwork. Where did it come from?

It's an artist with an important impact on the Swedish mind. To us, this is what trolls, gnomes, elves and water spirits look like. And the places where they live.

I agree :)
-
Love the colour scheme of the troll, really cool to see something different from the standard gw colour schemes people paint. :)
-
Thanks for posting your works- I had never heard of John Bauer. Really interesting images, I love turn of the century illustrators.
-
Nice to see you here Generalpoleaxe.
-
Nice to see the John Bauer influence Engel (me also),Henry Sime also does it for me; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTccGdbuCXo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Sime
As well as the obvious Kay Nielsen ;) And of course to Tolkiens illustrations, this sort of thing really gets the muse going :D
-
Nice to see you here Generalpoleaxe.
I have bee lurking for ages so decided it was time to start posting :D
-
I got some poor farmers painted.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/11/poor-farmers.html
The miniatures are from Gamezone. Very nice miniatures.

-
Very nice miniatures indeed! Poor and Angry!
-
Thanks for the information about the artist!
-
VERY NICELY DONE! The downtrodden masses never looked do good.
-
Oh my... I need those for a 40K agri-world scenario I've been wanting to do. Really nice grubby paintjob on those poor downtrodden souls.
-
Cool work Engel :) love the gritty feel of these.
-
I finished some more birch trees, or rather the trunks of some this weekend.

Splintered Light Gnomes! Most excellent!!! I've had this idea, too. Looks really good and I simply can't wait to see your board when everything's finished.
-
GREAT LOOKING birch trees...very realistic pieces. WELL DONE!
-
Nice trees!
The contrast IS excellent.
But, I have to say- Those Gnomes look fantastic!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks guys.
Yes soon I have an whole army of "tomtar", Im just missing the bases I have ordered.
They shoud arive any day now. All of my "tomtar" are already painted, just waiting for those bases. :(
"...when everything's finished." Hmm I dont think this will ever happend, I rather think of it as more and more finished. ;)
-
A small update. nothing fancy.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2011/12/making-bacon.html
Some small pigs to be used as objectives or to give some more details to the tabble.

Very cool (pun naturally intended)! Merry Christmas, Engel. Also digging the IKEA furnishings in the background...
-
Thanks.
I cant tell for the table on the right but all other are expensive design furniture’s and the couch and the cushions is home sewn, damn you... ;)
-
I have an uncanny feeling of having seen those gnomes in a neighbouring garden, somewhere.... lol
-
Time for a tiny update.
I got a new Troll from Game zone miniatures.
That is one brutal looking miniature…
I wanted a tail on my troll so I added one in greenstuff.
More pictures and a size comparison with other trolls on the blog.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.com/2012/01/anger-managment.html
-
seriously cool Engel :D Love the adition of the tale, it totaly changes the over all feel of the model.
-
Engel: Awesome Troll. Looks like he´s from the forests of Västerbotten.
-
cool! i missed the pigs and the dwarfes! both cool! really nice troll as well! =)
-
Bestial!
-
Nasty looking chap - well done!
Love the gnomes and the snow table too. 8)
-
Thanks guys.
That gnome and snow setup gave me second place at our local gaming clubs cristmas competition.
I won a free hug from the judge :D
-
WOW very nice!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o
-
Love the snow table.
Could you please give us a run down on what you use to make it?
Thanks.
-
Isn't that model usually projectile barfing? Did you have to ah... remove the lovingly sculpted upchuck or is it a separate piece in the kit?
-
Isn't that model usually projectile barfing? Did you have to ah... remove the lovingly sculpted upchuck or is it a separate piece in the kit?
It comes with alternative heads. I like the raging one best to.
-
That’s right, it comes with different heads.
It had 2 heads to choose from, and one piece consisting of the legs up to the waist and one piece from the neck to the waist.
Love the snow table.
Could you please give us a run down on what you use to make it?
Thanks.
That table was just a display piece for those photos.
I don’t think they would be any good to game on.
The base for that table is just a piece of big paper that I got from work, A1 or A2 format I think. I then butchered a cheap old first aid kit I got from a military surplus store to act as the lose snow and to cover the lower parts of the trees. The trees themselves I got from an friend in one of our flea market days that our gaming club use to have once a year (good thing to sell all those crap you newer will paint and to buy other peoples gaming crap).
One day I will build a better snow table, this was just built for those pictures to the cristmas competition at the club.
-
That snow table does look great, even if was just for the photos!
:-*
Congrats on the hug! lol
-
Its been a vile( ;)) since I last posted some fantasy stuff...
Some plastic Vikings from Gripping beast to protect there homes from trolls and other evil kinds.

Very nice. I particularly like that shield with the raven on it.
-
Love the vikings Engel :)
-
Excellent work as always - love 'em
-
Lovely, gritty-looking fellows. The ones with raven shield, two axes and the chap on the left are my favourites.
-
Thanks guys, it allways warms me to read youre comments. :)
More miniatures.
I finally got my hands on the small bases I wanted. That meant that I could base all my gnomes.
Sorry about the small picture but I had some truble to scale that one down somehow.
Many more and bigger pictures and the reason for the gnomes to take to arms on my blog.

The miniatures I bought from

Great stuff as usual, Engel. The Vikings look very cool, but I think the Gnomes steal the show for sheer awesomeness (I especially like the comparison shots with the RBG Troll on your blog and the Swedish cartoon). Just out of interest, how are you actually going to game this? I'm guessing it's going to be scenario-driven?
-
Thank you Funghy-Fipps
Hmm should I game with them?
I thought it was just a collection hobby. The one with most painted models in the end win...
No seriously, the plan is to use the Songs of.. rules and have it scenario driven and pressgang members of my gaming club to participate.
Im thinking of making lots and lots of markers and objectives to game over. Something like carrots or cabbage heads for the goblins and farmers to battle over.
Maybe some breadcrumbs counter for a Hans and Gretel scenario and so on.
Any idea is welcome. If they should just give players “points” for objectives and decide the winner by that or if the objects should make a effect on the game play?
I have just tested the rules a little and it seems to be an easy and adaptable set of rules.
-
Sounds good Engle. Might I suggest using Skulldred when it comes out? It has a little more flavour than SBH and more tactical nuances, though is still an easy system to grasp.
Duncan

Just a small terrain update, nothing fancy.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/04/mushrooms.html
Some small mushrooms a friend gave to me.
-
OH NO...it's the attack of the Lawn Ornaments from HELL! The Little Lads in pointy hats are VERY COOL & WELL DONE!
AND,the mushrooms turned out TERRIFIC...you can never have too many mushrooms.
-
Fantastic collection of figures there. They all go well together for a fabulous theme. I am really liking those Red Box minis - so much detail.
-
Aww... They're kinda cute, and they add character to the table.

COOL...I love the old Grenadier Barbarian Giant. It's one of those minis that I painted many times for various other Folk. You did a FINE job bringing the Old Lad to life. WELL DONE!
-
Haha my kids have just been watching Trolltyg i Tomteskogen ;)
Very nice miniatures!
-
A small update. Some armed bondi to defend the village against trolls and jötunns, well at least they could die trying.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/07/more-vikings.html
Miniatures from Wargames factory. Not the best miniatures on the market but they will do their job and it’s hard to argue with that price, especially as a friend gave them to me for free.

Some proper warriors, Viking hirdmen.
These boys are ready to tackle the lurking trolls in the forest.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/0...ally-small.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/07/small-hird-really-small.html)
Miniatures from Gripping Beast excellent plastic Viking hirdmen box. I just wish for them to release a box of plastic unarmored Viking Bondi. But I guess that’s not their top priority now.
-
Great additions, Engel!
That Grenadier Giant is a right proper looking Giant I reckon.
None of that namby-pamby nonsense with him.
Good choice!
-
Nice work :-* :-* :-* ,your theme for these minis gets me in everytime :)
-
Lovely work Engel :)
-
Thanks guys, much appreciated.
Now I just need to find the perfect set of rules. At first I thought about using the “Songs of..” rules but now Im not sure.
The historical rules of “Hail Caesar” turned out great to my tribal Africa side project (yes yes I know, to many projects running at the same time…) and I have considering testing them for this project to.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/06/tribal-wars-in-africa.html
Im not sure its good for a small band of characters or monsters or creatures.
Treating trolls as elephants with some tweaking of the stat line could work.
-
Have you given the lord of the rings SBG rules a try. They would work well with your model collection.
For bigger battles i think its hard to beat kings of war by Mantic games.
-
Nice additions and I've always like that Copplestone giant. Try to point more light on the figs directly from the front. A cheap stainless steel shop light or two would do wonders.
-
That really is a nice giant. Fits your theme very well too.
-

This really is one of those threads that when you see there's been an update you have to come and check it out. You don't disappoint.
Duncan
-
Looking great! What rules have you settled on and, more importantly, when I can come over and have a game?
-
Thank you guys, very warming.
We had a little convention at the gaming club and I used this day to demoplay and debute the Treemoss fantasy project on the tabbletop.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/08/vaxjo-miniconvent.html
I will post more pictures and a better description on that actual game later. Untill then, fiest your eyes on these.

It's one of those funny things, that whenever I see an update on this project I know it's going to be good. It really does look fantastic. Out of curiousity which rulesset did you use?
Duncan
-
Thanks Djiit, I tested Hail Ceasar. I will post more pictures, the stats and so on, later on. There are lots and lots of more pictures from these games in the pipe.
The good thing with this project is that Im not locked to one set of rules, I can always switch rules acording to the scale of the game or what seems interesting at the moment... :D

Krig i tomteskogen...

Lots and lots of more pictures on my blog http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/08/krig-i-tomteskogen.html
I tried out the Hail Caesar rules in a fantasy world setting and maybe not to surprising it worked. :D
I think some of the stats I used could get some tweking here and there but the basic is just great.
-
I love this whole project, Engel. Inspirational, and a great sense of story. It's great to see all these models get some table time.
I always imagined a very overgrown, dark green mossy forest as the battleground, so it was a bit strange to see them fighting on a sandy wasteland, but it's amazing stuff regardless.
-
Thank you Tomogui, I imagined the battles taking place just outside the big forest just besides the human settlemen.
But you are all to right. :'(
I realy need to get me a propper forest soon.

The games looks very cool indeed and I'm impressed by the fact that you successfully used Hail Caesar! I did imagine a more skirmish-orientated game, but this looks great! Just one question: where are the gnomes?
-
Just one question: where are the gnomes?
Just like ninjas, if you could spot them easily, they wouldn't be gnomes!
But I did spot a couple of perilously-situated gnomes on Engel's blog:
-
The analogy between gnomes and ninjas is not one I'd ever thought of before: but it does make sense! I take it the little guys didn't fare too well against their trollish adversaries?
-
Haha, thanks guys. Gnomes and ninjas is just great. lol
I have updated it with some better description under some of the pictures.
The original plan was to get a skirmish oriented game but the project had grown over time to a size that I could pull up a small battle instead.
-
So, I hadn't heard of Bauer before I read this thread. I'm a fan of Rackham and like the Bauer images posted here, so I ordered this book:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0863154573/ref=oh_details_o01_s01_i00
Got it today- really cool illustrations. Haven't had a chance to read it yet though.
Anyway, thanks for posting your project Engel!

If you like Bauer you should check out Kittlesen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodor_Kittelsen). Obviously a Norwegian artist would be better than a Swedish one... ;)
Addendum: Given there are a fair few Swedes on LAF, why are there so few Norwegian members? Any ideas?
Addendum II: I won't even start on the Finns.
-
I know a few but my guess is that most of them are eaten by a Rimtusse or a Raglefant.
Ive seen some of Kittlesens work before but thanks for sharing. Never bad to have many inspirational sources.

Kittelsen is not not a patch on Bauer. Not nearly the same subtlety.
I have to agree on this statement.
Don't worry Norwegians, you still have Odd Nerdrum!
Although, I think he was born in Sweden...

The last games (showed earlier here) got me interested in this project again and here we got some new terrain.

Lovely and very very evocative.
Duncan
-
Thanks guys.
And thanks for taking the time Tomogui.
My box of basing material is full of all kind of dried leaves, twigs, grass and flock and so on. I like the more natural variation it gives me.
-
Cool little pieces like these can add a tremendous amount to a gaming table. You really do overgrown TERRIFICALLY WELL. FINE WORK!

This just arrived by mail today in Värend, Småland.

Marvellous terrain.
And that Lindworm looks gorgeous! :o

I just glued this beast together yesterday and I just had to show you.

-
I find mine usually goes cold ;)
Looking good - lots of nice scales to bring out your choice of snakeskin pattern.
-
Looking forward to seeing this on the table: will be a whole new level of antagonist for your heroes.
-
As much as I love the big scaly fella, forget him and get to work on those Dwarves!
-
Thanks guys.
About those dwarves. Im not sure about the metal parts on those. Should I go with silvery "mithril" or more redish copper or bronze. I have also thought about the blueish tones on the metals as my heroes?
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yno7yFsSZcg/Tpr1hBxV27I/AAAAAAAAAKM/Dp-Gyuinbz8/s600/Woldvagner+the+Wise+1.jpg) (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WSNoeX_1KJ4/Tpr17eJX8wI/AAAAAAAAALU/QzGCifKLOqI/s600/Bolverk+the+Bold+1.jpg)
Maybe a mix would be the best answer.
-
I find mine usually goes cold ;)
I thought yours normally ended up with paint brushes in it. lol
Anyway, liking the look of the Lindorm Eng! Can't wait to see the beasty with some paint slapped on it.

It would make sense that the Dwarves would have their own secret metal recipe, resulting in a different coloured material. Still, whatever you decide I'm certain it'll look damn cool.
-
Great looking stuff, Engel. I have to admit that I've missed this thread earlier!
Love the subtle forest pieces as well :-*
Gubbspel Galore IV? Växjö isn't that far away from Gothenburg if you draw a straight line...

Thanks guys.
I thought yours normally ended up with paint brushes in it. Laugh
Its not that fun to spill out the whole mugg late at night as have happen before... lol
I was tempted to go to Gubbspel this year but with a baby daughter it would be bad to be away a whole weekend, but next year she is older...

-
This is a wonderful project! Enjoying your ideas and painting style. Bear rider is simply a gem.
-
The Bear & Rider are EXCELLENT looking minis graced by fine brushwork & basing. VERY WELL DONE!
While my projects go off in a different direction from your own, I often come here for some inspiration...a WONDERFUL thread.
-
Great work, Engel!
Fantastic painting.
:-*
That Bear rider is just :o
-
Thanks guys, glad you like him.

This is a great project!
Nice concept, cool mini's I hadn't seen before and I really like your painting style. Nice, inspirational.
Can't wait to see what's next...

More great, characterful little blighters! You really have chosen the ideal miniatures range for the scandinavian feel, and your painting and basing style compliments them perfectly. I'd really love to get a skirmish game in against your forest-dwelling hordes amongst those trees.
-
Love these Gobbo's and your brushwork - another range I feel the need to buy into!
Edit - I didn't see the archers on the Redbox Games site. Are they still available?
-
Thanks guys.
I think Tre at Red box is currently reorganizing his ranges and is switching over to plastic/resin.
I heard something about a Kickstarter to finance the converting of Goblins/Njorn/Dverg in October/November but I’m not that sure about the time frame or exactly which models it includes
I just love his goblins (amongst many more of his creations…) they are so cute with their stubby little fingers. :)
-
More fucking resin...This hobby is gong down the shitter. :-[
-
:o Resin is great. Just needs some love and care.

I keep saying the same thing. Damn the North Sea, Norway and Denmark (with apologies to the many great Danes who frequent this august forum)!

I'd be very surprised if Tre gets another KS campaign in before Christmas, despite what he earlier claimed. Still here's hoping! Oh, and excellent job on the the Goblins: the warpaint is an especially nice touch and gives them a strong tribal-woodland vibe.
-
I love these little fellows! Nasty savage little gits, and no mistake. They deserve (we deserve? I deserve?) a nice cropped close-up shot to display them in all their glory, don't you think?.
-
Hmm a mugshot, I´ll se what I can do with my camera.
I think its soone time to built a little photoset and get me a new camera... lol
-
I have a little group of those goblins... but they are sooooo small! Nice work on them!
-
Yeah that whole line bums me out I would have bought all of them if they were bigger.
Your painting and theme for this whole project is solid!

Maybe in the future people will not even understand the name of this forum!

I lead many adventures in my gaming pasttimes!
What do you mean you don't mean Leading? You mean Lead, as in metal? Are you mad? Metal miniatures and worse of all Lead?!
Surely you've heard of the dreaded Lead Rot?!
Never heard of any resin rot...

Viking Thralls.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/09/thralls.html
If you got some slaves in fit age why not use them to tip the scale in a fight. By giving them some javelins they could help you defend your house or village against an intruder.
These Viking thralls give a little variety to the Viking force.
And best of all, by including crappy ill equipped troops it will make your hirdmen look even better…
The miniatures are from Miniature Design Studio.

I opted to go with one multi base for the ability to create a more fluid and interesting formation. I left some miniatures on single bases so I can rearrange the unit as I like or the option to add or mix them easier with other models.
-
Whoa whoa those shields did you hand paint that? Frickin sweet!

Lovely work!

Lovely additions!

Just an small update, nothing fancy.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/10/more-norsemen.html
Some more Norsemen. Some leftover minitaures that I had laying around. Thought I could glue them to an “assembly line” and prime then, and after that I gave them a quick paintjob some bases and flocking. Nothing special but they will do as rank and file to fill out the gaming table if nothing else.

A couple of weeks ago we had another game of my Treemoss fantasy, using the Hail Caesar rules.
Two Viking villages clashed, one supported by goblins, trolls and halfogres the other by gnomes, a Jötunn and Ljosalfar.
Allt the pictures can be found at http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/12/viking-and-trolls.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/12/viking-and-trolls.html)
And a small collection can be found here.

I made an order from Gripping Beast on some viking lead miniatures and a box of plastic hirdmens not to long ago. When It arrived it also contained a limited edition Viking and a sorry letter for taking so long time.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/12/limited-edition-viking-from-gripping.html

Truth be told I hadn´t even started to worry so this was a really nice surprise. Thanks Gripping Beast
-
Nice free mini... they seem to be good chaps at Gripping Beast. Excellent paintwork :)
-
Engel, I am jealous of many things in this world, but your 'flock box' rates highly among them! Looks more natural than nature, even.
-
What a great bonus!
A lovely sculpt brought to life with a great paintjob and your customary, wonderful basing.
Love it!
:-*
-
Thanks guys, its really warming. :-* It was motivates me to keep posting this here.
Tomogui, thanks man. I think I will have to revile my secret recipe later. ;)
And now to his buddies...
Many more pictures on my blog http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2012/12/viking-hird.html

The hird is a mixture of plastic and metal miniatures from Gripping Beast and a plastic Gw head from their Empire line, the really hairy one donated to me from and friend. I think I should try to get hold on more of those heads as they seems to mix real well and is a simple way to give the whole unit more variety.
-
The Christianization makes the entrance to the trollforest…
A little part of Växjös history (my town) and small bit of the historical legend of Saint Sigfrid and his nephews Unaman, Sunaman and Vinaman as well as more pictures of the miniatures of choice for them are on my blog.

Lovely! :-*
-
COOL LOOKING Holy Guys! That's how I picture a missionary band; i.e., sans the armor & weaponry. The brushwork & basing are VERY WELL DONE!
-
I really enjoyed those in-game group shots, seeing comparisons of the gnomes and trolls, all fighting together. Brilliant stuff.
-
I bet the trolls can smell 'em coming a mile off!
"Mmmmm, Christians..."
-
:D
I guess these four guys will have a hard life in this world...
Dont miss the back story on these historical persons on the blog... ;)
In short its four historical persons sent to Sweden and Norway to christianize the pagans. The story does not end to well for all of them...
-
I bet the trolls can smell 'em coming a mile off!
"Mmmmm, Christians..."
:) great film!
-
Looking good Engel. Would you mind showing how Gripping Beast match up to Red Box?
-
Thanks guys.
Vauln, I will try to get at propper size comparrison later on.
Now for my next miniature... I just had to have something like her in a project like this...
Princess Tuvstarr
The little princess has broken free from the forest lake and is all grown up now...

As usuall lots of more pictures of her on the link, and some more referense pictures from artist John Bauer.
-
I love that mini, I painted it up as Isolde for my wife a couple of years ago. Nice work as always.
-
Excellent work and another worthy edition to your project.
-
Thanks for the coment guys.

The Viking Fellows benefited from some TRULY FINE brushwork & basing. VERY WELL DONE!
Addendum: I somehow missed the Princess...they grow up so quickly. She's a BEAUTY...GREAT WORK!
-
Looking great - your fine work will definitely come in handy when I'm looking for ideas for my citadel Norsemen.
The Princess looks a picture too 8)

One of many miniatures I lacked in this project was propper archers and these boys are a way of amend that.

Lovely work :) And I'm intrigued about the backdrop, looking forward to seeing what you do with that :D
-
Thank you. At the moment I feel that fitting terrain is missing. I have started to ponder on how I should amend that but untill then these monks should stay way out of the forest... :)
Following the religious tumult and the findings of empty monk robes, gnawed bones and large pieces of droppings. Some monks
have started to take to arms.
Surely this is the work of the fallen angel to try to scare them away from this holy task of Christianize the Norsemen.
For it cannot possibly be the work of someone or something else can it?

Freshly painted miniatures.
I wanted some new trolls. And found what I was looking for from Ral Patha.
I chosen to go with brown, green an natural colors as I wanted an image of that if the creatures stood still no one would notice them in the forest.
Many more pictures at: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/02/here-be-trolls.html

Loving the new additions, sir.
Those trolls are great and fit in to your project perfectly.
Well spotted.
:-*
-
Late again...oh well! All the new additions sport your TERRIFIC painting & basing style...that's a real plus with moi. The Trolls, however, are OUTSTANDING. All are VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks guys, its wery warming. :)
Im spent alot of time painting this weekend for the next game and here are some Norsemen Bondi to reinforce the collection.

They look great :-* Have to get some of those troll :)
-
Those Ral Partha trolls are rather good.
-
Wow nice blast from the past... the troll with the rock is one of the first metal minis ever that i painted... can you still buy those somewhere???
-
Ral Partha has them on their site even today.
Those sculpts were also re-used under license for a Mage Knight subfaction, so I know them well!
-
Thanks guys, glad you liked them. Those Ral Patha trolls are ace and fit allmost perfect for this whole project. Oh and they are rather cheep to... :D
We had a new game a couple of days ago. I have hosted my rather bad pictures from it here.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/02/tomtar-och-troll.html
Sorry for the bad picture quallity. One day I will get me a better camera. :?

One thing that is mayor lacking in this project is the terrain. A small stepp to amend that is these rune stones from Fenris games.
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/02/rune-stones.html
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-z4IjCEEXfc0/USFRFGDc70I/AAAAAAAADf8/7GRvLqTAQWo/s800/P1050121.JPG)

Oooh, I love those Fenris runestone pieces, been coveting them on eBay for a while now. They look great painted up like that. Just perfect.
-
The Standing Stones look FANTASTIC...very atmospheric additions to your already cool gaming table. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks guys. :)

Thank you Painting Princess.
New anti-hero. Gunnar Gröpe
Background history and more pictures of Gunnar Gröpe can be found at:
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/03/gunnar-grope.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/03/gunnar-grope.html)
Gunnar Gröpe lived in the tradition of the 900 - or 1000-century Värend. According to tradition, he was known to be cruel ("gröp") and should have stated the värendsbor who murdered missionary Sigfrid three nephews Unaman, Sunaman and Vinaman around the year 1000. He will for the deed have been displaced from Värend of King Olaf and took refuge in the Tving in Blekinge. At the cemetery in Tving is a stone, which is considered a memorial of Gröpe.
According to another tradition, Gunnar Gröpe ancestor of the noble family Trolle. He is said to have struck the head of a troll, and after this feat dynasty took its name.
-
Well Dunnar may have been The Doer of Dastardly Deeds, but his mini persona is REALLY COOL...a FINE bit of brushwork, basing, & color choices. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks DeafNala.
And a rather big Norsemen update...
http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/03/hirdman.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/03/hirdman.html)
And together with some Berserkers I did earlier these miniatures make up a `standard size´ two rank deep unit in Hail Caesar with 16 miniatures.
This means I can soon play out bigger battles and moving from `small´units into `standard size´ones, making an even more impressive game I hope.

Lovely dirty, gritty painting. All these figures look the biz.
-
Whenever you can field units that look THAT GOOD, it will be a MOST IMPRESSIVE game. The Lads look TERRIFIC...GREAT WORK!
-
Thanks :D
Some more norsemen.

Lovely additions, Engel.
Some of the best yet!
:-*
-
Great thread. I browsed the whole thing just now. I love the flavor you managed to capture with your miniatures and terrain. I'm from the U.S. but I have family in Finland, so I'm very familiar with that area of the world. I agree that it provides wonderful inspiration for gaming!
One thing I'd say is don't write off the Song of Blades & Heroes games. They're really ideal for skirmish level gaming, maybe 6-15 figures per side. I'll have to take a look at Hail Caesar now!
-
Thanks for taking the time PatrickWR, this project surely has grown since the start. Im up to 19pages here on LAF. :D
I had some plan to soon host a church raid by heathen norsemen assisted by forest trolls and defended by christian norsemen and monks, and here use the Songs of... rules.
I just need to build me a wooden church to lit on fire... ;)
-
Just an small update.

I went over most of the thread and then went and followed you on your blog and put you on my blogroll as well. It's easier for me to go through your work that way.
So how did you solve the problem of the necks being attached to the torso on Gripping Beast and the necks being attached to the head on Conquest?
This is some stellar kit bashing and you've got yourself one unique unit here.
-
Also went through this thread for the first time. The mood created by this project is absolutely beautiful - having it all tied together with a theme makes it just a joy to look at, let alone game on. Keep up the great work.
-
Thanks for your coments. Its warming.
The neck problem was solved with left over arms from a Wargames factory kit.
The necks on these models are really the upper arms or shoulders from those bits. Glad that kit could be of some use.. lol
The joints were then hidden with liquid greenstuff. Great, fast and easy way of doing it.
-
I wanted to include some riders, but I coulnt find any nice ones on the market soo I kitbashed some. :)

Never!
They look wonderful, sir, as if they were meant to be.
:-*
-
Lovely stuff. I always know I'm in for a treat when you update this thread.
-
Loving the forest bases :-*, such depth and variety, nice one!
-
I can't believe I never wrote anything here!!! Where have my eyes been? This is a really nice thread and though I haven't looked at everything yet (having just realized it was here... :?), I will most certainly come back and have a closer look.
Very nice and inspirational from what i have seen so far.

Thanks guys. :-*
About time I had some dwarves in this project...
The miniatures are from Red Box Games.
Many many more pictures at: http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/05/the-seven-dwarves.html (http://kampgruppe-engel.blogspot.se/2013/05/the-seven-dwarves.html)

And as of a coincidence I noticed that I got seven dwarves, which must mean I must find a miniature that could work as a Norse version of Snow-white…
Tre is currently running a new Kickstarter campaign and this time its all lead...
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1103158358/red-box-games-dwarves-and-goblins-and-orcs-oh-my (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1103158358/red-box-games-dwarves-and-goblins-and-orcs-oh-my)
Looks promising, and it has allready had its basics funded so now its all about stretching the goal.
-
Love your dwarves :-*
-
I do love the mixture of earth tones and bright colors. Great work.
-
Ooooh!
Dwarves!
Nice work, Engel.
:-*
These fellas look good.
Better proportions than most of their ilk.
A good choice.
8)
-
Wow, best looking dwarves ever. You have really brought them to life.
I have to get some.
-
Love those dwarves!
-
The Dwarven version of The Magnificent Seven look SPLENDID. Your brushwork breathed life into some EXCELLENT minis...GREAT WORK!
-
They look really nice! :)

Thanks for your warming comments.

-
TERRIFIC WORK on a GREAT mini! I love the colors you chose; AND the brushwork, particularly the striped trousers & the freehand on the shield, is OUTSTANDING. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Awesome painted miniatures and those standing stones looks fricking real!! Awesome.
-
:o you painted that? The small details are spot on. :-* You don't have a team of Lilliputians do you? ;)
Cheers, matt.
-
Very nice mini that!

This is truly fantastic and puts me in mind of the old role play classic request. Keep it up. :)

Wow thanks guys.
I got more planned for this project... just you see...

They look great! Might I ask, why did you base the three warriors with the dog on a single base?
-
Thanks.
I choose to singel base some of them to have the option to use them in skirmish type of games.
While still having some benefit of an multibase. I prefere multibases as a standard for easyer movement and better options when it comes to arange the miniatures so they dont stand in such perfekt lines that is very unlikly in an unit of Berserker type on infantry like this.
I needed an Skald to tell the tales of my heroes.

Some wonderful new additions to the project, Engel.
Love the Skald and those Ulfheðinns are wonderful!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks.
Where did I get him?... Its already mention at the blog along with a link. :P
Das Schwarze Auge is the company.
-
While I don't comment as often as I should, I've found each new addition to your Project to be inspiring. May you never tire of adding to your WONDERFUL WORK!
-
A really big thanks DeafNala.
A new Jötunn... With tiny forks stuck in his hair. Some people collect stamps or lead miniatures, this dude seems to collect forks. :D

He may not be the finest of sculpts, but he sure is one IMPRESSIVE looking Giant. I love him...warts, forks, & all. I think the beard & ax along with some FINE brushwork make the mini. GREAT WORK!

I just wanted to make a heads up for the gaming convent Gubbspel Galore IV in Gothenburg in Sweden at the end of August as I plan to take most if not all my Treemoss fantasy stuff there to host some games.
More info about Gubbspel Galore IV can be found at the site http://galoregbg.wordpress.com/ (http://galoregbg.wordpress.com/) or from "Silversixx" over here at the LAF forum.
What this means is that this shit just got serious.
I will need to make me a fitting table with some fitting terrain pieces to match my miniatures. And I need to try to finish a lot of half painted miniatures and really try to focus on the whole Treemoss fantasy project.
And the rules and statlines will need some tinkering.
And a some scenarios to game could come in handy.
As I previously just hosted some local games at my club this is a big step up. Ive spent some time now reading about Viking warfare and mythology but the more I read the more I see how little I really know about it. But that’s the beauty about “historical” wargaming.
It’s a big difference in studying and remembering what colors or what name their chapter master got in the world of warhammer 40k then studying an actual event. This is history, well with some additions of trolls and their like…
The deadline for the games are the last weekend in August so I still got time to finish some nice stuff and test out some ideas.
Any ideas or pieces of inspiration that could help me is most welcome.
And If anyone got any special wishes for this project now could be a perfect time.
// Jonas

Holy christmas! :o

I love what you've done with the Standing Stones...very dramatic looking in full color. I have a set of stones thanks to Our Man Mason that may benefit from the inspiration you've provided. VERY WELL DONE!

A big thanks for that guys.
A new unit of Gestir

These combined with the Gestirs I painted earlier will make a standard size unit i Hail Caesar or two small sized units.
Anyone know if the Gestirs are in WAB rules ? or some other rules for that matter and what the those autors thought will make them "special" from the standard troops ?

I got a feeling someone been playing a lot of Drakar och Demoner: Trudvang?
But I love the quality of your work and I appriciate your use of John Bauer as an inspiration. Keep up the good work.
Finally I wasn´t around when this one was posted but all I can say is...

Morsan, jag meja ner hel tomtearmé!!!!

Thanks Machinegunkelly.
Unfortunately I haven’t gamed Trudvang. I quitted roll playing about the time it was released. I wish I hadn´t because I just love the setting.
If you liked those Tomtar you should look at the first post in this thread…
With the girlfriend away, or maybe more important the 15 month old daughter… I could make a sort of inventory for myself of my Norsemen collection spread out on the floor.

AND the new unit is a FINE addition to The Host...your WONDERFUL shields are becoming a trademark. VERY WELL DONE!

That is an impressive hoard of hairy Northmen, Engel!

-
Makes my skin crawl and takes me back to the Aderson and Grimm stories i was read as a chilld.
It has really come to life!
-
Absolutely amazing work. Now stop teasing us all and show us how you get your amazing bases...... pretty please?
(or have I missed a tutorial somewhere?)
-
That is a GREAT piece of brushwork on a WONDERFUL Old Mini. VERY WELL DONE!
-
A big thanks guys.
Muncehead, Im working on a big tutorial at the moment. Stay tuned...
Drengr

I wanted some light infantry for my Norsemen and found it in these miniatures from Griping Beast.

Engel - looking forward to it and really good work there on your Drengr. The base tutorial will improve my figure bases hugely.
Reading this thread (and the blog) I can see my next project forming (after the Empire of the Dead one) Now where can I get some nice orcs?
-
Superb thread, Love the recently added Dwarfs. I need some of them me thinks!

Thanks.

-
Speechless....... wow!
-
Superb! Lovely looking miniature and paintjob.
-
A great addition, and the paintjob is singularly evocative; just fantastic. While I can get some of the old Olley trolls from RPE, sadly these two latest fellows aren't amongst them.
I love your project. Fantasy and the First Millennium are made for each other.
-
These latest trolls have been magnificent creatures!
-
Wow, big thanks guys.
Muncehead> Here is the promised tutorial. It got alot of more things then just the bases but hope it can help you.

-
Thats the spirit. :D
-
Thats the spirit. :D
Does Jack Daniels count? ;D
Totally agree about using a broad selection of flocks, crushed leaves, tea, maybe moss (oooh must go to the garden centre!) - you've inspired me!
-
Bloody hell, Engel!
I have missed a lot of what has been going on on the Fantasy board this last couple of weeks and now I am being punished.
I have only just seen that Troll.....and it is IMMENSE!
:o
I love it!
So expressive with that wondeful paintjob.
:-* :-*
Now I have to find out where to get one.
:)
-
Great fig and paintjob. It would be nice to see this mini in action - new battlereport please :-*
-
Love this old troll! Such an expressive face. Great painting too and of course inspirational work on the basing, as always.
-
Big thanks. :)

Very nice. Are those pine-cone helms?
I have started my magical flocking formula collection, birch seed leaves, grass cuttings, sand, soil, ordered some flock-mix from Zitterdes to throw in too - the one thing I am looking for is some moss-type foliage that will not lose it's 'green'. Any herby suggestions?
-
The Dwarfs & the Standing Stones are WONDERFULLY DONE! The background fluff adds a lot to their ample personalities...too bad the Short Ones are no longer in production.
-
Thanks.
I thought they looked like pine-cones so I painted them like that.
I wanted to keep track on all the casaulties so I made these.

-
He's done it again! (Mutley voice: Rukka Sukka Magic Flock Mix Secret Formula!)
Really nice markers Engel!
-
Those are grand!
-
I really like that troll! Have always liked that figure, one of Olley's best.
BTW you really need to shine more light on your figures for the pics. They are really dark, muddy, underexposed. I point it out because I can see enough to tell the paintjobs are great and I really want to see them at their best! :) Get another lamp and shine it as directly from the front as you can, and make sure the top light is a little in front of the figure too rather than behind, else you get... backlighting. If you can swing three lamps all the better as you can have one immediately to each side of the camera and one above. If you really can only get one light make sure it's well in front of the figure and shining down at an angle where it gets both the top and front of the figure.
-
Yet more fantastic stuff from you, keep it coming.
-
Big thanks.
Yeah, those are some really crapy pictures, sorry for that. I will see if I can take some better ones tomorrow.
Stay tune...
-
Nice work.
I love the troll of course and the dwarfs look great!

Excellent as usual Engel - good to see you managed to get some of those. I am waiting for them to become available again - really like the Red Box figures.
-
Those are SPLENDID Little Hooligans...BEAUTIFULLY done up too. GREAT WORK!
-
Red Box doesn't list the goblins and trolls any longer. Are they OOP?
-
I think MOST RBG stuff is OOP at the moment. :/
Tre may be making something of a mistake discontinuing so many popular minis so soon after he brought them out (two or three years, I think?), but it's his business.
-
Is he not working on kickstarter sculpts at the moment?
-
I believe that's the case? Maybe if he'd kept his existing lines going until the new ones were ready it would have worked out a little better? Of course many folks prefer some of his older sculpts specifically (for instance, the old Yrsa the Accursed is a classic, as is his Arnoldt of Weglaf's Hill).
I don't know all the business details though, maybe the moulds wore out?
-
Well if they ever surface again I will be grabbing some. Hassle free mentioned that they were getting a few more Tre sculpts in soon.
-
Tre had the thought of switching to plastic (or something like that) and started to discontinue some of his lines, the first kickstarter he made was apparently something of an disaster for him as the sculpts didn´t translate to good into the new material and productions didn´t keep the time and so on.
He is currently working on his latest kickstarter where all was metall.
Why and how this happen I have no idea.
And when these miniatures are starting to appear on his site again I have no idea.
It’s a pity because Tre is one of my favorite sculptors and a nice guy.
I have noticed that Hasslefree has bought some of his miniatures and sells them. So some of them can be found there.
I think its mostly old sculpts that is slightly larger than his current stile but I don’t know.
Try searching for Tre Manor on http://www.hfminis.co.uk/ and you will find them
But enough about that, bring on more pictures...
I tested a new concept a couple of days ago...
Trolls raiding a Tomte village.
This Tuesday we test played a special set of modification rules to Hail Caesar resulting in this raid on a small Tomte settlement.
The rules worked far beyond my expectations and was lots of fun for all players.

Looks like a great game Engel...... rules you say? Will look forward to those.

Trolls raiding a Tomte village.
The molds Hasslefree bought were of Tre's original Red Box sculpts, which are somewhat larger thus and incompatible with the current range. As Engel writes the first Red Box KS (last year) was an unmitigated disaster largely due to problems with the new material (Trollcast: a resin-plastic hybrid, I believe) and the inability of the casters to meet the demand (which they promised they could). Tre has worked hard to rectify all the problems. The second KS (last May) saw Tre retrenching and returning to metal (yay!). It seems to have been a resounding success in terms of targets being kept.
Great pictures Engel! Those poor Tomte look like they're in for a rough time!
-
Lovely work Engel :-*
-
The Board is a BEAUTY!
I love the Big Green Guy with the club...who makes him?
-
Very nice batrep!
Great looking board and minis.
-
I have only just come across this thread - wow! An absolutely fantastic collection of figures, terrain and imagination. Keep it up. I am very much looking forward to the next installment.

A big thanks.
DeafNala; most of them are green and carries a big club... ;)

-
Really nice! I have to admit I hadn't seen the updates in this thread for a while, but now that I see them it becomes clear that I missed something! The table looks great, very atmospheric, as do the miniatures. Where did you get those cool gnomes?
-
The gnomes are from splintered light mins.
-
A big thanks.

These are 32mm miniatures so they are a bit larger than your standard 28mm miniatures. I knew this and planed to include them as something special.
But the big question is what or who are they? Im haven’t decided yet and the deadline this weekend for Gubbspel Galore IV is closing in fast…
They could be Valkyrias, female Einherjar (fallen warriors after they gone to Valhalla or Sessrúmnir) ?
Greek mythology is full of character with were one parent is mortal and one is a God maybe I can borrow some of that?
Half jötunns ?
But really, any idea or tip would be greatly appreciated.
-
The Ladies look formidable & LOVELY...a dangerous combination. TERRIFIC brushwork, color choices, & brushwork brought the Warrior Babes to life in an OUTSTANDING manner. VERY WELL DONE!
I think the Lasses should be Guardians of some sacred spot...something to be FANATICAL about.
-
They look really nice!
They could be Valkyrias
That's exactly what I immediately thought of when I read they were 32mm. :)
-
First update for today... ;)

Nice one - the more I see these big trees on this forum, the more I think it what my collection also needs. There's something ancient about them.
-
Those trees look great! When I did my forest board I considered doing them like this, but my trial rule kept falling over, what have you made them from and have you weighted the bases?
Duncan

Thanks.
I had these miniatures for allmost two years now, feels good to give them some love.

Very imaginative paint scheme - liking it.

Now those really are 'Dark' Elves!
Well done.

Cheep and lightweight.
-
The Gaming Boards look WONDERFUL. I love the range of colors you chose...they match your FINE mini bases perfectly. VERY WELL DONE!
-
This stuff is so inspirational its ridiculous :D Loving it Engel!! :-* :-* :-*
Don't stop now ;)
-
Big thanks Vinlander.
Unfortunately the gaming convention I did gear up for has past and as such I am a little fatigued at painting stuff for this project. I´ll take a short brake and paint some other stuff until I can find some new inspiration or lust for trolls and fairytale creatures.
My pictures from Gubbspel Galore IV can be found on these links.

Great pictures from the convention!
Always wise to take a bit of a break from a project every now and then. You've posted some inspirational stuff Engel (in the process made me start looking at my fantasy figures in a new light and add them to the project list in addition to some Carpathian horror) so I look forward to more posts in the near future.
-
Great looking table. Enjoy your rest look forward to where this project goes next once you feel ready to start it again

Hello again...
A couple of weeks ago we had another game of trolls raiding an small gnome village.
I have just uploaded the pictures and taken the time to write down the rules.

There's just something about this project that makes me smile. I love it mainly, I think, because it reminds me of the work of Rien Poortvliet which I devoured as a child.
-
WELCOME BACK! The game, minis, & board look SPLENDID...the duel is a GREAT PHOTO.
-
Ooooh, so nice to see an update here. Always loved the aesthetic of this one!
-
Hope the gnomes take a troll out this time...
Tremendous game and interesting rules too.
-
:-* I don't understand how I missed this thread earlier, but you have a fantastic project here! It was a very enjoyable hour to catch up.
-
Some of the new Midnight Workshop offerings seem perfect for your setting.

Fantastic thread can't believe I've missed it! Great stuff :)
-
Absolutely adore your thread. I thought I had commented before. Very inspiring stuff! :-*
-
Big thanks guys, glad you liked it.
Dr Mathias> thanks for the link. Ive seen the miniatures before but not that they were for sale.
Cubs have done a terrefic job painting those trolls. I might get those trolls later.
Actually I was thinking the other day that it might be time to breath some new life into this project. Seeing this thread still kicking is one way of making me comming back to fantasy.
Im still waiting for some miniatures from a Red Box Games kickstarter that should be shipped any day now. So gearing up for fantasy might be a very nice idea.
-
I am waiting on those Red Box miniatures too. Have you seen Tre has posted a few teasers of the undead figures from his next venture?

The Norsemen have gathered the Här for a comming battle and is traveling along a road through the forest of Värend.
When about half of the Här have passed an ambush is sprung and from nowhere fully warpaint clad creatures swinging mighty two handed weapons charges.
The alarm is sent along the column and the Här is gathering for its rescue.

Rumour has it that due to a wedding and a silly trip to Japab, the pride of Småland won't be able to attend Galore. Tell me this isn't true :(
-
That is a SPLENDID Battle Report...War never looked SO GOOD!
-
Big thanks guys.
Silversix> Those rumours are true. But Im lobbying for other people to attend Salute Gubbspel Galore this year and I really want to go.
After all I think its only proper to have a Skägglavs fantasy game with this years theme and all.. lol
-
Big thanks guys.

I just got the Red Box Games Kickstarter delivery and If I can only clean up all those half finished miniatures from my painting table I hope to start on some of these later on.
So what you see in the picture is:
2x Njornan footmen A, Goblin footmen A, Runty Goblin Archers, 2x DIRE WOLVES, DVERGR BRYNJAR A, YMIR'S BAND
And the characters: Edele, Yvander, Ylvfroidr, Olsvalter, Astridr, Gunhildr, Dogsbane
The only thing missing from the Kickstarter that Im aware of is the T-shirt.
Great to finally have these beauties here. ;D
-
OOOOH! SHINIES! Have FUN painting/basing/whatever them all!
-
The gnomes are from splintered light mins.
I found them on their site, are they 15mm tall?
-
Thanks.
About the gnomes, I dont know.
They could be as they are rather small, its only fitting...
I just got the start of an small village.

-
COOL LOOKING STUFF! The accessory pieces give you an opportunity to come up with some really imaginative stuff. It's good to see you're making the most of that opportunity. GREAT WORK!
-
Some barrels from Renadra.
Filled with bear, salty fish, apples or who knows.
But they will be important, something to battle over.

Filled with bear :o
Looking cool. Love the loot.
-
I see.... beer, bear, bare naked ladies... Who knows... ;D
As long as you dont open the barrels it could be anything.
-
Looking Lovely J! :-*
I'll try to get a game in. The trolls are crying for revenge. And more pigs to devour..

Just catching up on your blog. Love your Treemoss project.
Very impressed with your choice of colours and style for these dökkalfars. I am sure i will steal this idea for some of my fantasy figs :)
-
Please do.
That colour choice take the whole "fair skinned" to a different level.

The Old Troll is LOOKIN' GOOD! I love the moss you added to the stone...VERY nice effect. GREAT WORK!
-
Add to that the basing - terrific!
-
Very nice. Every time I see the RP trolls I want to buy them. Perfect in your setting.

Where are those Dökkalfars from? I would like to lay my hands on some.
-
Where are those Dökkalfars from? I would like to lay my hands on some.
They were from Myrmidon Miniatures, oop as far as I know.
Artemis Black still has some of them:

I have the Priestess, the Shaman, the Lord and the Berserker spare, drop me a PM if your interested ;)

Ohh thanks.
I am thinking they could make some great White Walkers for some GOT gaming.

Big thanks fellows.

I agree; i.e., Trolls of various sizes, shapes, & coloration are always a welcome addition to a Fantasy setting. This new one is particularly COOL. BEAUTIFULLY painted & based, AND boasting a WONDERFULLY EVIL expression. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Big thanks DeafNala, I just love that troll.
I pimped some older terrain pieces for this project.

Just got an idea when seeing that backdrop sketch:
Could it be made with, of course, a painting, BUT with 3D elements added to the forefront (half trees, roots and stones and some ground protruding, etc.)?
-
It has crossed my mind. :)
I have thought about "some day"... make a backdrop for the gaming table like that.
-
I also like using natural bits for my terrain. AND those look TERRIFIC...the roots make a particularly interesting piece. GREAT WORK!
-
Last troll painted before I went to Gubbspel Galore this year.

MY Internet connection has been crapping out on me for the last couple of days. That is the first photo that's visible to moi; AND a VERY COOL one it is! The Big Shamanistic Guy is a FANTASTIC mini, BEAUTIFULLY painted & based...the skulls are OUTSTANDING. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Yes! Fantastic work.
I have a great many of those Bob Olley trolls in plastic, as they were licensed for use as "Krugg" in Mage Knight. You're tempting me to repaint mine...
-
Just popping in to say once again how much I love this thread! Such a great, dark fairytale/mythology style atmosphere to your project.
-
This is awesome! You've captured the atmosphere of a deep, dank northscandinavian forest, both in your terrain and your models.
-
It really was ages ago I played some fantasy games but yesterday it was time for the trolls to make a new raid on those poor gnomes...
We had some new kids in the club and what could be a better way of introduce them to the hobby then to bash a gnome village.

They always look like fun games. Except when there's an angry dwarf involved.
-
The troll shaman is excellent I can almost see it's breath. I love the striped fur skirt bit.
Looks like a great fun game. I take it the ones on the left are playing as gnomes and the mad haired player on the right is the trolls?
-
OUTSTANDING! That is a WONDERFUL looking game...looks like it was a popular one too. GREAT STUFF!
-
About time for an update I would say... :D
Finally got some fantasy mojo back.

I'm not sure what they are, but they REALLY are cool Little Guys. There is something about them that brings to mind the Frouds' creations...this is a plus with moi. AND they are as BEAUTIFULLY painted & based as all your little treasures. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
Red Box Goblins? Nicely done!
-
You really did a great job on those Red Box goblins. They look just perfect. I tried to paint them once and came away defeated (they are tiny little casts), so I'm all the more impressed with your work!
-
Thanks.
Yeah those little buggers are Red Box Games, Goblins.
-
Look the way goblins, should look.
-
Outstanding! I like the game and the idea behind it. I like how you guys welcome the kids too.
Honest good wargaming. :-)
-
Love the red box goblins. Nice.
-
Just finished the whole thread. Tremendous work! It looks great, and inspires.
-
You're damded thread here not only made me start a new collection, it also forced me to buy the Blood Rage kickstarter! ;)
Keep up the good work.
Maybe i will get to see your collection live one day if you ever feel like presenting a game at Tactica in Hamburg - It is not too far away from you! :D
-
Really really big thanks for all those inspiring words guys.
I would love to go to Hamburg one day, Ive seen pictures of the creations displayed there. :-*
Hope you like these new Vättar... :D

The Goblins are WONDERFUL; what MAGNIFICENT noses! The Little Guys painted up BEAUTIFULLY. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
It's true you really do have the noses pegged. Stunning work.
-
:-*As ever Jonas! Since I've had the pleasure to game your lovely board I know they'll fit just right in.
Still have nightmares about them pesky gnomes :'(
-
:D Thanks guys.
I have made this recent Goblin paintrush so I could muster a 24points Lion Rampant warband with them to an "open day" we had at the club, where I wanted to show some of my miniatures from my "Treemoss fantasy" project.
Here is the AAR:

I pitted Norsemen against the Goblins.
Enjoy
-
Enjoyed the battle reports.
-
Great looking game! I've said it before, but I love those goblins!
-
WHAT A SPLENDID LOOKING GAME(s)! Of course, the Goblins are the coolest gang on the field. GREAT STUFF!
-
Your minis, the terrain, the scenery...man, I totally envy the fortunate members of that club !
-
Great to see this thread is still active! Lovely paint jobs, Engel! Full of character!
-
This is awesome, and very inspiring, and I would love to game in the same circles as you some day.
I was actually collecting miniatures for a very similar project (which I called "Trollsaga") some 5+ years back, but it stalled before I got to painting any of them because I never did find small goblin-like trolls in a Baueresque aesthetic, and they were supposed to be quite central to the setting. I was meaning to convert GW Gnoblars by sculpting mops of hair on them, but then I thought twice of my sculpting skills. Those Red Box goblins come quite close to the aesthetic I was after.
Maybe I'll take the project up again some day, but now I get to live vicariously by following your project instead :)
-
Except for being quite small, the Red Box goblins are amazing--just how the creatures should look, I think. If I could do the superb job on them that Engel does, I'd buy hordes of the little blighters!
-
Only thing holding me back from buying them is that I am college broke at the moment
-
My friend Johan have started to collect some Álfes to tag along in the Treemoss fantasy forest.
This Saturday we and I had a great game of Dragons Rampant where we pitted his Álfes against my Vaettr.

These Treemoss battle reports are always a treat.
-
I am delighted to see you are still at it. The Battle Reports are a visual treat. OUTSTANDING WORK as always!
-
Yay Treemoss!
Those mid-90's shadow warriors have always been some of my all-time-most favourite elf sculpts.
-
Treemoss yet lives! Love it.
-
Yay Treemoss!
Those mid-90's shadow warriors have always been some of my all-time-most favourite elf sculpts.
i know I should have picked them up when they first came out
-
Pretty sure they can still be had cheaply. Picked up a couple more a year or two ago for practically nothing.
-
Saw white a few on evil bay. But have to wait a bit to order them
-
Treemoss returns! Callooh! Callay!
-
Thanks
Yeah, those shadow warriors are nice.
Another excellent game of Dragon Rampant... I really like this set of rules. They are so simple to add all sorts of creatures in the future...

Yet another SPLENDID LOOKING game! OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
Looks like I'm going to have to push Dragon Rampant up in my wishlist...
-
Yes, Dragon Rampant is a great set of rules. Have been playing it alot recently (also with my northern myth stuff that you inspired me to start). We have been having fun games without the long rules discussions that have been spoiling our gaming a bit in the last few years.
-
We have been having fun games without the long rules discussions that have been spoiling our gaming a bit in the last few years.
Simple and straight-forward rules always count for less debate amongst players! lol

Oh my gawd. The poor pigs! The elves look a little out of place (I know they're not part of the collection), but if they had appropriate banners and shield designs they would fit right in I think.
-
SPLENDID! That was a WONDERFUL looking game...GREAT minis & scenery do their thing.

My friend Johan and I managed to play two games of Dragon Rampant this weekend.
Here are the AAR.

The plan is to use him in Dragon Rampant, Im thinking that Elite Foot with Missile could be nice rules for him. I could maybe give him some special rules but Im thinking about keeping him rather clean.
-
The Big Blue Bearded Guy painted up WONDERFULLY. He looks TERRIFIC in his natural setting. VERY WELL DONE once more!
-
As usual you dont disappoint. Lovely paintwork!
-
Thanks guys.
-
Lovely painting - and awesome photos. Very, very cool. :)
-
Brilliant, love the Jötunn.
-
Nice 'un.
-
Wow! Nice looking jotunn mini there, very nicely painted. I really like the moss effect on the top of the rock he is about to throw.
-
superb, love that Ice Jötunn, shame you can't actually buy it on it's own
-
Love the work on the Ice Jotun
-
Looking great as always!

I like your work! Your blog was a true treat... only made it through the first half so far!
Dijit > Not my cup of tea, but thanks for the tip.
I intend to keep this dark and gritty, low-fantasy.
I made some large stones out of styrofoam to be used as terrain.
And if you’re big enough I guess you could always tip them over onto a smaller creature on the other side…
