Thanks BW   :D

For 6mmPhil ( ;)) and others interested in the miniatures I've used, four of the marines are my sculpts using Hasslefree faces and pulse rifles with the other two being HF conversions (eg, I mastered and cast the helmets, added body armour or pulse rifle, etc); the Aliens are conversions that started with cutting about a mix of parts taken from a couple of GW Tyranid sets plus hands and feet that I'd mastered then cast.

Oh yeah, I was hoping to see some of your aliens and you certainly delivered! THe atmospheric lighting works really well and my only comment is that your Aliens could do with a bit of gloss varnish. 8) Dr. Chimpula, your models are very nice and colourful as well, good job!

Thanks Ray and Pil.   :D

The point about a gloss finish to the Aliens is a really good one and thanks for raising it.  I did gloss them first but combined with the lighting the effect was really, really bright ..... not so much melting out of the walls as reflective beacons for any available light.  The absence of any sense of them lurking in the shadows did really spoil the whole scene.  I left the jaws and mouths as glossed though that doesn't really come across in the bigger image. For the next set I might try a satin varnish to see if it works as a compromise and if it does I'll then recoat these.

Thanks for the explanation, it's good to hear there's a little thought to the matte varnish! In the picture the matte does indeed work as it makes them look much darker and more menacing. In game I don't think it'll make a big difference in visibility, I'm already looking forward to more pictures of the models 8)

Thanks for the explanation

You're welcome  :D.  It's definitely an interesting exercise to paint something for playing with under localised harsh lighting!

I was actually wondering so I'm made up to find my question answered in great detail before I even knew I was going to ask it. Did recognise them partially, so excellent work on your part... click!

Try just glossing the head/domes and teeth/claws, that'll give you a good balance and not too glarey, but with red or blue light...really nice effect.

Thanks for the comments and votes. Much appreciated.  :)

@Commander
Thanks also for your comments on the varnish.  I picked up some satin today and idc will experiment with that and the localised gloss that you've suggested.  :)

Great Alien entry, love the lighting.

And great job on The Last Unicorn, Dr. Chimpula. I've seen these in person and the photo does them no justice. The Unicorn and the Lady Amalphia are covered in sparkles...they sparkle...gotta be a first time in the LPL... :)
