And so, after 360 hard-fought matches, with more than 10,000 votes cast for 76 competitors from England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Russia, Sweden, the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia (did I miss anyone?) Season 5 of The Lead Painters League is finally over.
I know many of you will join me in saying a heartfelt – Thank God for that!
Because, yes, it’s a shitload of work, toil, effort, blood, sweat, tears, grit and determination.
And that’s just for the organisers.
For the competitors it’s far, far more onerous than that.
Thank you to everyone who took part, voted, and contributed as commentators.
In the entire 10 weeks I only had to remove a handful of comments which overstepped the mark of ‘non-constructive criticism’. And apart from a brief flurry of rules-mongering before we got underway, there was very little dispute from any of the participants about any aspect of the competition. So a big thank you for conducting the whole thing in a friendly, positive LAF spirit.
A sincere thank you too, to the inestimable Ray Rivers for his excellent work as official LPL returning officer. Splitting the admin workload really makes it a much more manageable undertaking. It’s still pretty time-consuming - but more bearable.
So thanks, Ray, for all your time, as well as your ever-helpful input and support.
Congratulations to those contestants who stayed the course and managed to produce a new team for every single round. An astonishing 42 out of 72 people collect the blue riband, and that really is no mean feat. Turning out 10 new teams to a good standard is a tough challenge. Real life has a nasty habit of throwing itself in the way and tripping up the best intentions.
And now (drum roll… ) to our winners... :)
The Winner of Season 5 of the Lead Painters League, gold medal champion extraordinaire, is the incomparable FRANK with a socking great score of 575 points.
Was it ever in any doubt?
Well, yes actually, because several people pushed him very close at times, and Regulator’s superb landsknechts put Frank’s elves briskly to the sword in Round 3. But Frank fought his way back up through the field, with one stunning composition after another, to snatch the lead after Round 9 and comprehensively secure the title in the final furlong…
In second place on 547 points, congratulations to the indefatigable CHAMBERSOFMINIATURES!
Patrick finished 10th in LPL2, 4th in LPL3, and 4th again in LPL4! This time he has shouldered his way firmly onto the podium to take the silver medal with a succession of his trademark clean-cut entries, covering all sorts of wonderful subjects. A very well-deserved result, which I’m sure many LAFers will applaud. Next time, Patrick, only the outright win will do!
In third place with 541 points – DR. MATHIAS, who has made a thoroughly impressive LAF debut with his LPL campaign. After several early successes, Matt suffered a couple of setbacks mid-league, but roared back to finish in style and nab the bronze medal. Well done Matt (and welcome to Lead Adventure by the way ;))
Well done to the winners.
Extremely hard luck and sincere commiserations meanwhile, to the mighty Hammers, who led the field at a canter for almost the entire LPL, before - tantalisingly close to the finish line - falling prey to REAL LIFE :(
Also to the ever-brilliant Bugsda, who came galloping up on the outside rail, looking a dead cert to snaffle the title - before running into some seriously stiff opposition in the final two rounds.
And finally to Blackwolf1066 who made it to the silver medal position on the leaderboard after 9 rounds… For which his reward was a bone-crunching showdown with Frank in the final. Sorry Guy.
Congratulations to that whole clutch of gallant competitors - Bugsda, Blackwolf1066, AndyM, Blue In VT, Matakishi, Arcturus, and D@rth J@ymZ - who all ended up within touching distance of the podium at round about the 520-530 point mark. You were all serious contenders and can be justifiably proud of your campaigns. (I’m proud of you, dammit! ;))
Ray will publish the final leaderboard shortly, so all competitors can see exactly where they ended up.
Winning isn’t everything of course (well, it is as far as I’m concerned - but I know not everyone feels the same :D)
For many people, taking part in the LPL is about being the best they can be and challenging themselves as much as anybody else. And I think that’s something which all LPL participants would sign up to. Of course not everyone has the same level of craft or skill – but everyone can learn and improve, and I see a huge amount of learning and improvement going on, even in the course of one season of the LPL. In inventiveness, painting, photography and presentation.
And the last word, of course, must go to thank the Prof - the fevered brain and beating heart behind this great forum. For dreaming up this fascinating competition, and promoting it week after week.
Thanks Alex.
-
Thanks to everyone involved. Twas a splendid competition.
And just to wrap things up... the Final Leaderboard:
-

Thanks all, it was a blast! :D
-
A big thanks to all the organizers and participants. The last ten weeks were a blast. I'm really looking forward to the next LPL.
I'm overly happy that i made it into the Top Ten :o :D :o. I always hoped for that but it wouldn't be possible without all the people who voted for me - so a big thanks to all the voters, too.
And last but not least congratulations to the well deserved winners!
-
Thank God thats over lol lol lol
Well done to the winners. That would be every one who entered :D
Congrats to the leaders though. I hope it hasn't worn you all out for the year and we will still see more of your stuff.
Thanks to Captain and Ray for all the hard work.
-
Yup - big sigh of relief!
Congratulations to everyone and another massive thankyou to the organisers!
Well chuffed I was only 4 places behind my target position of 36th but seeing Grimm sat there I'm surprised I climbed as high as 40th! :D
Learned loads, upped my game and have virtually exhausted my wife's patience with me - now on to finish all the projects I was involved in before the competition started and all the ones it has since spawned in my mind... >:D
'Spose I'd best reacquaint myself with the family too! ;)
-
A hearty congratulations to all of the medalists, but most especially to Frank for his well-deserved Gold. A further congratulations to all the participants, particularly those who managed 10 different entries. The bar was definitely raised this year!
A huge round of thanks to the good Captain, the good Professor and their hard-working dogsbody Ray Rivers.
Let's all start working on those teams for next year!
-
Congrats to the winners and all the participants, it was a hard but very friendly and interesting season. Captain and Ray did top work, managing 72 participants. I did three seasons and I know how hard it could be. Bravo, guys, very well done!
-
I'm sad it's all over - I looked forward to seeing the new entries every week.
You know, there's something deeply fun about comparing your votes to those of others.
-
Yeah! Well done the masochists.....I mean organisers ;)
How did Hammers end up 25th? :o
I had a pony with Ladbrokes on him to place lol
-
Thank you all guys for this wonderful competition. :)
For me (63rd!) was a pleasure just to be in the same contest with some glorious LAF veteran. Real life stop me after the 4th round :( next time I will start earlier! ;)
Greetings to Frank for his amazing victory and to others podium guys! Thanks to the Captain and Ray Rivers for their incredible effort. Thanks to the unique Prof for supporting this wonderful community of REAL GENTLEMEN.
I'm really proud to be a LAFer 8)
Sincerely,
Faber

Yeah! Well done the masochists.....I mean organisers ;)
How did Hammers end up 25th? :o
I had a pony with Ladbrokes on him to place lol
Sorry to disappoint. All the skilled competition aside, a lack of endurance during tough circumstances will kill you. :)
Congratulations, Frank, I voted for you throughout. Blood, Ray hat of to you both, I really mean it.
-
Congratulations to all the worthy winners, and a big thank you to the organisers! It was a brilliant show - till next time!
:)
-
Congrats to all involved - great fun and an excellent way to churn out the minis in time for the campaign season. :D
-
I had great fun. My favorite part was the flurry of my-wife-hates-me notices somewhere around Round 8 or 9. :) Thanks to Captain Blood, Ray Rivers and the Prof. I'll wait a couple weeks and then start posting plaintive requests that we start the LPL6. o_o
-
That was a lot of fun, I think I'll join in next year too. Congratulations to the winners and a big thank you to Richard and Ray for their continuing hard work.
I've charted my progress through the League (if anyone cares) here: http://www.matakishi.com/lpl2011.htm
I like to picture LPL entrants like ducks, calm on the surface but behind the scenes there's quite a bit of frantic paddling going on to stay afloat. That was my experience anyway :)
-
I am very proud and it is really a great honour to have won this fantastic LPL and belive it or not, it was my first painting competion I have taken part. For me it was not only a lot of fun, I have also seen fantastic miniatures and many brilliant ideas. Some topics were also totally new to me. A big thank you to Richard, Ray and the Professor for thier untiring efforts and congratulations to all other participants...you made it! :D
-
Hey Matakishi, thanks for mentioning me on your blog. I feel honored and i am very happy that this entry had such an impact because it's my favorite of my own entries.
-
Congratulations to all that participated in the competition. Seeing so many painted miniatures over the last 10 weeks make us all winners!
Frank you are the man!
I really should starting investing time and money in terrain. lol
Patrick
-
Congratulations to the winners, organisers and all who took part. :)
-
Yeah Cheers to all...this was a great event...certainly the most enjoyable miniature event I've been involved with. Huge thanks to all those that made it happen...Richard, Ray and Prof...as well as all the participants. Congrats to Frank...your victory is well deserved...along with Dr. M and Chambers you guys are a huge inspiration.
I'm already starting to think about teams for the next LPL...and how to keep my wife a bit happier this time... ;D
Cheers!

Very well done Frank*....
..... I have to say that your Gordon of Khartoum was my favourite entry of the entire event..
[/Applause]
*well, everyone really, but especially Frank
-
Well this is a surprise, I'm not sure how I squeaked into the top three... I've been traveling the southwest USA for a week with practically no Internet, so I haven't even been able to follow the last eight days :(
Congrats to the winners and salutations to all my fellow competitors, thanks to you I was encouraged (forced or frightened might be better) to paint far and above my past efforts. It's been hard for me to look at figures I painted ten weeks prior! Looking forward to next round...
I offer my sincere thanks to the organizers, what an effort!
-
Thanks again Ray and Richard for your outstanding patience and and dedication. And congrats to everybody. It has been a lot of fun and a lot of excitement as well. I had originally hoped to get into the top 10, then the top 20 and now I have failed by one. But then again I think the gents who finished better than me do deserve it. Actually there are some more people who have a lot better pictures to show than me and I can count myself lucky that I scored higher (and I guess it is mostly because I tried to grab as many bonus points as I could).
Things I learned:
1) I need to improve my photography skills.
2) Overall GW miniatures are a bad choice if you want to win.
3) Bright colors usually go further than toned down natural colors.
4) Subtle blending painting style is not as well liked as the more brisk (I don't know the correct English word) Foundry painting style.
5) Colonial topics have a high chance of scoring.
Now mind you - I say these things without any hard feelings, I find them interesting. Of course there are exceptions and overall I think the people who deserved to win usually won. And I think it's perfectly okay since miniatures, painting styles and topics are of course "fashion trends", so to speak. And let's face it: I have seen truly wonderful entries that left me really in awe of the painters. Well done, everybody.
-
Congrats Frank, you really deserve it! And to all the others: it was a great time, I saw so much inspiring stuff! I'll participate Next time for sure! Not to forgett Richards and Rays efforts to make all that possible.

Doomhippie, your rules of thumb for LPL success more or less match up with mine. I'd change your last rule to "5. Colonial and pulp topics have a high chance of scoring.", but that might also be personal bias showing up. :)
Of course, I'm disappointed with myself for not getting a full set of 10 teams fielded, and for missing bonus point opportunities in Rounds 5 & 10. That extra 50 or so bonus points would have done flattering things for my final standings!
Still, I'm content with another LPL gone by, lots of amazing stuff as always but up a notch or two over previous LPLs, I think. I have a nice extra lot of painted figures crowding the edges of my painting desk now that I almost certainly wouldn't have if not for LPL5.
And of course many thanks to Capt. Blood, Ray and the Prof!
-
Congratulations and thanks to all who competed and orgnaised. As a non-competitor, I'm going to deeply miss my Sunday evening trawl through inspirational eye-candy.
Although, I did get my first miniature of the year painted today to dull the pain somewhat - at this rate, in about ten years time, I'll have painted as many figs as each of you who had original entries for each round. I don't know how you manage it.
Bravo, chaps, bravo!
-
Congratulations to Frank, a real feather in your cap and well deserved
Huge thanks to Richard & Ray for all the hard work that made this possible - thnk you very much
As others have said I learned a lot and will be keen to have another go next time - I finally learned how to photoshop by entry 10 lol
-
I like to picture LPL entrants like ducks, calm on the surface but behind the scenes there's quite a bit of frantic paddling going on to stay afloat. That was my experience anyway :)
You could say that again. Never mind the pedalling, this duck was shot right right out of the water around R7. :)
-
Congrats to Frank and the runners up! The top 3 is, in my humble opinion, as it should be. Very impressed with the work, kwality and creativity displayed this LPL! Already hoping for an LPL6 next year!
Richard and Ray deserve a loooooooooooong vacation after organising this monster 70+ contestant edition of LPL! Of to the sanatorium with you two lol
-
Congratulations to all for all the great painting. Looking forward to seeing all the matches on Sunday really inspired my own painting. Of course not having any thing to look at allowed me to get all my yardwork done for a change. Made my wife a lot happier. :D
Thanks again Richard and Ray for all your hard work.
-
Another great LPL year! :D
Congratulations to the mighty Frank – and to everyone else that entered. There was some inspirational brushwork throughout. The thought of painting that much lead in that amount of time gives me the shakes. ;D
Big thanks also backroom boys Richard (for corralling everyone) and Ray (for spreadsheet services). :)
-
I wish I could have done more and avoided using "old team"... Well, there's always next year lol
Congratulations to the winner, Frank, to the organisers Prof, Captain Blood and Ray and to all who took part either by entrering teams or by taking the time to vote.
It was A LOT of fun once again.
Cheers! 8)
-
Congratulations to all participants. We rock! :)
The winners were worth it.
Some entries I remember (for different reasons) that hasn't been mentioned in other threads
was life in a fish bowl, chthulu nursery, the monkey mechanics, masai and lions and
also the school theatre in the first round.
Next time (probably not next year) I will have a plan.:)
-
Congrats to all the participants.
The excellant workmanship of the entries is remarkable.
I looked forwarded to viewing the entries each week and will miss that.
-
Having got this first LPL season under my belt I must say that I am already thinking about the next one. Many thanks to everyone, organizers and participants alike!
-
Also my first LPL and I must honestly admit that I let's say .... "underestimated" it a bit lol lol
But it was great fun and I'm already planning for the next one :D
Congrats to everybody who help in any way (participants and organisers).
-
Congrats to all of the entries this year guys, I wouldn't be able to commit to the competition myself.
Great work Greywolf1066 you have done our tiny part of Australia proud!
cheers
