Title: Mister Rab's chivalry project - updated 27/06/2013
Post by: Mister Rab on May 24, 2011, 08:06:48 PM
I painted something! This is the (very very) beginning of my chivalric dungeon crawl project which may be just about ready by the time Christopher (3 1/4) is old enough to join in  ::)

(http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7917/knightanddragon.jpg) (http://img824.imageshack.us/i/knightanddragon.jpg/)

The dragon's head was very kindly supplied by Ramirez NoName, after I picked up a headless one, for the price of a picture once I'd painted it. So, Ramirez, here you go and many thanks again :D

The knight is a black tree design body from their early HYW range with a 5th ed Bretonnian questing knight head.

These are my first miniatures on LAF, so please treat 'em gently  ;)

Lovely, just a shame you couldn't have reversed the heraldric colours on the knight and given him a red dragon's crest in keeping with his foe, kinda like the knight's ancestors and the dragons had been gripped in combat for generations.

Lovely work though on the dragon, so nice to see the LAF effect do its work re: that head.

I know, I know - I'd already nearly finished the knight, though, when I got the dragon and I couldn't bring myself to restart. Takes me faaaaaar too long! The dragon had to be red as well as that is what the figure is called  ;)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm just waiting for the basecoat on a giant I picked up from Phreedh to dry as I post this. The painting bug has struck again...

Lovely dragon - the eyes are great!

The colour blind knight's looking good too - like his crest very much!  ;)

Can't wait to see the giant...  :D

Got the old marauder one myself, lying in bits - but got too much on my plate at the mo.

Hats off to you, Sir - That's a cracking paint job on the dragon and I like the "green head" on the knight.

A "dungeon crawl" - now that takes me right back to my early D&D days at school .... thank goodness I still have my "Blue Book" rules to look at occasionally.

Great start to a project and look forward to seeing the giant.

Excellent! Great painting on the Dragon and I like the conversion on the Knight, too (i've always liked that particular helmet crest as it looks a bit like a puppet). An auspicious debut for your painting here on the LAF!  ;)

Great stuff, mate! Really looking forward to see how you treat those giants!

Will you do a base for the dragon or keep it as is? Looks a bit barren, but I suppose from a gaming POV it's easier to keep it base less. =) Apart from that minor critique it's top notch, very well painted!

Both pieces are VERY WELL DONE, but the Dragon is SPECTACULAR!...I also like the way you did his/her/its eyes.

The paintjob is lovely, treating it gently would be an understatement. I haven't seen a properly painted picture of this dragon before and I must say it's rather lovely! The knight looks very nice too, good job and a great pair together!

Thank you everyone for your kind words - it certainly encourages me to keep painting and sharing the results here on LAF. I must admit I'm rather chuffed with the dragon as you can probably tell from my change of avatar!

Really looking forward to see how you treat those giants!

Hmmm, I'm struggling a little with the large expanses of flesh, but I've had a cunning (maybe, we'll see!) plan to thin some of the mid shade with a bit of sepia wash to try and tie the layers together.

I really wasn't sure myself what to do, but I've pulled a large-ish rectangular base out of the heap, painted it black, and I'll be basing the dragon on it to match the knight's scheme at some point when I haven't the brain for detailed work  ;)

Okay, here are the next two - another knight to be brother in arms to the first, and a giant for them to match their might against:

Photographing them I noticed more than a few blemishes, but I'm going to try and keep up the momentum and press on!

I think the nest ones will be more adversaries for my chivalric duo: I've some Mantic skeletons assembled, but first I think a couple of Rhoninstorm goblins...

Oooh,  :o I really like how that giant turned out! Glad I sold him to you, I had some second thoughts but it would just have been gatering dust here.

New knight ain't half bad either, really like how the yellow and blue work with the plate armour.
Title: Re: Mister Rab's chivalry project
Post by: Mister Rab on May 29, 2011, 07:52:20 PM
Thanks, Phreedh, I'm glad the giant found its way to me  :D

The knight honestly looks less streaky in the lead, but I may touch up the blue on the surcoat and the yellow on the shield to even them out.

Well done. I really love that dragon and the other models look really nice as well! Keep on doing what you've done to these models!

With a working camera again, I can prove that (admittedly slow) progress has been made towards my little project.

The rhoninstorm goblins were great fun to paint once I'd got a warm enought tone to the skin colour, and the mantic skeletons came out better than I feared - I spent so long hunting for just the right boney-boys (cost vs. appearance) and they were the least unsatisfactory option to begin with but I'd recommend them now.

Very nice, especially like the gobbos but the skellingtons are nicely painted. Not that fond of the models. They aren't much fun, just big old (albeit well sculpted) skeleton warriors. Not a lot of soul in them, eh? ;D

... which is the idea of the undead, I guess. They look good enough to me on the picture. Then again I don't have any skeletons in my closset apart from the old GW plastics.

Thanks all - it's always nice to know that others think I've done a reasonable job, too, and I'm not just suffering from a sort of "creator's myopia"  lol

Not a lot of soul in them, eh? ;D
Yup, that's what I wanted - the delightful 80s skellies that I often admire on LAF have just a bit too much character. I wanted shamblers dragged untimely from their rest, not wicked bones with will and personality.

Post by: Little Odo on July 16, 2011, 04:11:54 PM
Wow! That dragon is fantastic. The skellies' eyes are also really scary. Excellent work. I have an old Citadel Red Dragon to paint up, so I think I will steal your paint scheme - it is very nicely done. I doubt mine will turn out even half as good. I really like the giant too - not the sort of giant I was expecting to see. He's more bestial than just being a big human. Your paint job has brought out the raw brute force of the sculpt.
Title: Re: Mister Rab's chivalry project
Post by: Mister Rab on July 16, 2011, 05:18:35 PM
Thanks, Little Odo, very kind of you  :D

The dragon was painted in Foundry 'British red coat' shades, with regular washes of GW's 'Baal red'. The bit that made it look good, in my opinion, was to drybrush the painted red dragon with a mid shade of Foundry's 'Boneyard' and then hit it with another wash or two of 'Baal Red'.

I'd love to see your dragon when you get a chance to slap some paint on it.

The skeletons & the Oh-So-Cool Goblins look TERRIFIC...VERY WELL DONE!
Now you need some suitably-in-distress Damsels for rescuing purposes...etc...in keeping with the "chivalry" theme.

I'm having trouble hunting down damsels (perhaps the dragons have already eaten them?) - any suggestions, anyone?

Plenty. =)

My favourite, from Mega Miniature's Guthrie Grenadier range (http://freeboardgamesnow.com/fantasyjulieguthriegrenadier.aspx) (25mm but wonderful figs!):

Some more from the same range:

This one fits well, from the Human NPC range (http://freeboardgamesnow.com/fantasyhumannpc.aspx). They're a tad larger than the Guthrie Grenadier and fits better with vintage Citadel.

In their Townfolk range (http://freeboardgamesnow.com/fantasytownfolk.aspx), there are some other candidates:

 8) That's perfect, phreedh  :D

There's no UK/Europe distributor, is there? I want the first and third of the pics you posted for definite, and may grab a couple of other NPC types (every adventure needs a friendly monk/hermit) while I'm at it...

Nah, there's no european distributor that I know of but ordering from Mega is super quick and postage is super cheap. John always charge much lower than actual postage, for instance my latest order was stamped $16 or so. I paid $7 for postage. For just a few figs, expect to pay $3 shipping. Orders are dispatched very quickly and arrive in a matter of days usually. Customs nabbed my package this time, but as John is such a smashing bloke he ofcourse marks packages with a nominal value instead of actual value.

Regarding monks, I ordered the monk a while ago from the townsfolk range, and he was a tiny fellow (25mm). All models from the human (and other) npc line have been fine though (rather true 28mm). I have a comparison somewhere.

Thanks again, Phreedh. I ordered direct and got a princess, an elegant lady, a princess in a gown and two fair maidens. I gave the monk a miss as it was only a whim, anyway.

No problem, you gave me a reason to waffle on about an old miniature line. :D

I received all the minotaurs from the Grenadier line today. They're nicely 28mm man sized (like the old pre-slotta minotaurs from Citadel) and ought to form a nice SBH warband at some point. Also got a shitload of dungeon furniture for that 3d dungeon crawl we all have on a back burner.

After a bit of a pause when I've been concentrating on getting my rules for this project to work, I've got a couple of pics to show that progress is being made.

A necromancer to direct those skeletons:

A brief overview on the stuff that's made it out of packages and in various stages of painting. I was a little shocked by how much I'd already got, particularly considering the current bid list over on eBay...  ::)

And a couple of action shots using the marvellous (and cheap) printable dungeon sheets by Billiam Babble of Inked Adventures over on RPG drivethru (http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/advanced_search_result.php?x=0&y=0&inc_subcat=1&author=Inked%20Adventures&site_=1) which I printed onto A4 self-adhesive labels, stuck onto mounting board and then coloured the sides in black with a sharpie. I really like 'em:

Now be warned, I'll be looking for playtesters soon for my rules!

Thanks, Engel - it was your thread (along with Funghy-Fipps' )that prompted me to update this one!

You know the weird thing is that it was seeing your wonderful 'Large Red Dragon' and chivalrous opponent on this very thread that made me think 'I've got to do some fantasy stuff.  NOW.'  Still not entirely sure whether I should thank your for this 'inspirational moment', though...   Having said that, I would passionately urge - calm down: not that passionately! - you to keep it coming as it is all grist to the crazy mill that is my imagination.

A quick painting update as I try and get a fully painted scenario sorted for Thursday when I hope to give this project the first playtest  :D

First up, some damsels that will almost certainly be in distress at some point (although I wouldn't trust the one in the red dress, she looks a little fey  ;))

And give us a twirl, ladies:

To rescue these visions of loveliness (or to be beguiled by them into unspeakable acts of treachery), knight number 3:

I've also shuffled priorities on the painting desk a little for Thursday:

After seeing Funghy's take on the Bob Olley trolls I just had to have some, and somehow a wolf pack and more giant rats fell into my shopping cart  :?  lol

There are also two Mordheimers and a Curtey's slinger to be brigands along with the pack of Foundry armed peasants that dropped through the letter box this morning.

It's going to be a busy four days trying to get at least some of these fellows sorted!  o_o

I've got the first one finished and will take a side-by-side shot, hopefully tonight. The angle of the photo makes them look a little smaller than they really are, but they're not huge by any means.

I'm delighted to report that this latest painting obsession of mine has finally seen some dice and is now officially a proper Project  :D 8)

I wheeled out the rules I've been simultaneously working on (currently called Quest, not very imaginative I know, but do you reckon it'll suffice?) for their first ever playtest on Thursday evening - it was the price I demanded for hosting a gaming session for a group of four decent lads in the 6th form who wanted to set up on some of the large tables we have in one of the maths classrooms for some Warmachine and 40K. After they'd finished their games, they had to play mine  ;)

The quest the four squires had to undertake was the simple task of escorting Lady Eleanor, along with her two faithful hounds and her maidservant Ceridwin, to her wedding. The sun glinted through the trees, warming their backs and their spirits as they talked of love and honour, walking to spare their horses and to prolong the pleasure of the journey...

Then the brigands ambushed them, slaying the groom and whisking their horses away into the forest and then trying to steal away the ladies as well:

The squires hurled themselves against the cowardly ruffians...

... and made reasonably short work of them, suffering only a few flesh wounds (and some embarrassment at their comically bad swordplay).

Horseless and tired they set off into the woods to find somewhere they could stay for the night to rest, only to encounter a knight undertaking a pas d'armes - "None shall pass". Desperate to prove himself, squire Barnabus (responsible for the best one-liners of the evening, including some genuinely witty running jokes about the likely political affiliations of the bandits) took up the challenge to fight until one was knocked down. If he won, the pas d'armes knight would guide them to a nearby castle. Barnabus was promptly killed outright in a freak dice result that made me wonder if I should have some kind of divine intervention. I chose not to, partly because it seemed so Mallory-esque, but mainly to give the rules a proper test before tweaking them. Ashamed, the knight showed them the way where they were welcomed by a beautiful woman in red and feasted before retiring a little drunk to their chambers.

Awoken by screams, and finding the door of them chamber locked they armed themselves, the door was opened by Ceridwin; Eleanor had been taken. They followed the dogs who were on her scent, encountered the lady in red (cue for a song?) who explained that the castle had fallen under the control of a giant who would take any noble woman who stayed there. These women were never seen again.

Hurrying after the frantic dogs, they came face to face with the giant. Squire Eridor charged the giant, increasing his chivalry as he did so, and with astonishing dice knocked the monster off his feet with his first attack. Squire Eenit kept on after the dogs and went to break down the door that they were howling at:

Sadly for the game, the parent who was giving them lifts arrived at this point and we had to break off.  :?

Thoughts on the game
For a first test it weent really well. The combat system in particular went just as I hoped, with each fight bringing the risk of ignominious death, but the heroes having the slight upper hand.
I found I was horribly rusty as a DM, and made the storyline so linear as not to give much opportunity for them to wander off into the forest etc, but they hugely enjoyed themselves and want to make it a weekly event. Whiel i can't spare the time for that, I took it as an endorsement.

Sorry for all the un- or part-painted lead in the pics, work intervened to steal my time  :-[

The 'dogs' had to be played by a pair of unpainted old west urchins from the bottom of my case 'cos I forgot the proper ones  >:(

The tiles are the Billiam Babble ones I mentioned earlier in the thread, including the woodland ones which he sent to me gratis when I asked if there were any wilderness tiles he'd made. Nice chap.

The dice are blank ones I put stickers on - red for attack, blue for defence. Attack have 1x 2 swords, 2x 1 sword, 2x blank and 1x skull. The defence ones are the same but with shields instead of swords.

The game looks great and very interesting, and I like the name Quest.  :)

It must be a kind of cross between RPG and skirmish game then?

The dice system sounds easy enough - what are the skulls for?

Love how you roped the students into playing your game and the fact that they enjoyed it must mean it was fun - well done.

Thanks, Furt  8)

I guess it's more like an Advanced Heroquest with an RPG flavour than a skirmish - movement is done in squares rather than direct measurement etc.

Skulls are there as 'calamities' - they play little effect unless you roll more of them than swords/shields when your Attack or Defence becomes Calamitous (a strap has snapped, you dig your sword tip into the ground, you slip on something unmentionable...) and counts for naught. This also causes a drop in Renown.

Questers have Movement, Prowess, Constitution, Resilience, Chivalry and Renown characteristics. Prowess is how many Combat dice you can roll per turn. These can be allocated between Attack and Defence, and are also allocated to any of the eight surrounding spaces, with modifiers for Side and Rear facings. The aim of each squire is to gain enough Chivalry to be Knighted (and later to be admitted to an Order of Chivalry). Increasing their Renown by slaying the Bad Guys TM allows them to acquire Skills. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of mechanics except, I like to think, that to be unchivalrous requires a dice roll to see if it's permitted.

The rules are still very much in Alpha, never mind Beta, but if anyone would like to playtest them just PM me.

Good to see things moving apace and - wow! - actual real-life gaming with dice-and-everything taking place.  Great work on the Trolls: the reddish skin-tone works really well.  And, yes, at least yours seem to be wielding rocks and not giant lumps of excrement (thanks for the persistence, Phreedh...).  I've actually just finished some RP/Olley Ogres which I'll hopefully post up this afternoon  (if I don't have too much to drink at lunch and fall asleep...).  Still really love those tiles and I can't wait for further instalments!

Thanks Mr Fipps, I'm glad you like it. I look forward to seeing your ogres, even if they are delayed by a post liquid-lunch snooze  ;)

I've got the doors all finished as well now, so they're not just lumps of mdf, the kids are keen and little do they know that the real meat of this adventure lies behind the door those dogs are barking at. Muahahahaaha!  >:D lol

Great stuff, Mister Rab!

The project is growing apace.
What a great way to encourage the youngsters to take an interest in your hobby.

Looking forward to the next update!

Well, it's only been a year and a half, but there are chivalric stirrings chez Rab once more. This project has gone through a couple of incarnations and now includes Song of Blades and Heroes (the Arthurian bits particularly), my own Goblinquest dungeon rules (see signature), and currently an attempt to reskin Dux Brittaniarum as a medieval-fantasy skirmish game. Well, whichever dice are needed, and however they fall, I've been able to remove a few more pebbles from the lead mountain. More on the blog (http://geeklydigest.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/colouring-in.html), naturally, although they're still crummy phone photos  ;)

Two more of the knights I picked up from Meyer

Some Curtey's spearmen to be lackeys for my head honcho

My current favourite - I love this miniature and am really pleased with it, even if the camera on my phone has given the skin an oddly orange tinge on my monitor

Looking great, even if the phone pics give horrible colour bleeding! Agree about the peasant with axe at the end, it's a great mini! Nice job and glad to have you back in your proper elements. =) Didn't realize it had been that long!  :o
