'Hello all! As a commission for Phreedh I painted these rather nice Bugman's Rangers, I thought you might enjoy them! I mostly followed the description provided on the Stuff Of Legends site and decided on green as a colour for the shields to go with all the browns:
http://www.solegends.com/citrr/rr01bugman.htm
I tried to duplicate the shield design on Bugman's shield and also painted on the tankard and battle-cry on the banner. The bases will be done by the customer himself. Anyway, on to the pics!

The entire group. I still think it would look nicer when ranked up but of course this is nicer for skirmish forces, as they are intended.

A shot of the backs, the cloaks turned out a bit more blotchy than I meant to.
Now on to shots of the individual figures:

I hope you enjoyed these and I hope it wasn't an overload of models ;)

You lucky man Phreedh!
Nice work Pil - shield and banner designs came out tops - love the greens and browns too. :)
-
Jolly nice Pil :-*
-
Very cool. love the dark look
-
:o :o :o :-* :-* :-*
WOW Pil those are Awesome...love your color choices and of course your technique is fantastic! In all my time with WFB and loving dwarfs I don't know if I've ever seen this entire unit painted up...now I want them... ;D
Cheers,
Blue

Thank you all, they were truly a joy to paint and I hope some day Phreedh will find the missing musician and champion for me to paint :D
I've never seen a properly painted version of this unit either but then again, in fact I had never seen these models properly at all. The Bugman and Standard bearer were especially nice. The warriors were also decent but half of them were made of lead, including rot, and were bulkier than the other half. The non-bulky models looked a lot better than the bulky ones in the flesh.
-
VERY WELL DONE! I did those Little Guys up for a friend...they are indeed a pleasure to paint. You managed to make all the duplicates look somehow different; each with their own little personality. I hope the missing Champion shows up; he's the coolest Lad in the group.
-
Well chuffed with them myself. Will post pics once I've received and based them.
Btw, just stumbled accross this which I had forgotten:

Painted example from the RoR page on SOL. How could we miss that, Pil?! =D

:o
Oh wow!
Always avoided early regiments because the figures where too samey - totally breathtaking!

It works pretty good with how we play SBH (and possibly Skulldred in the future) - a few heroes and a bunch of low stat henchmen types to bolster the ranks and give the heroes something to bash. =D

Here is a link to my own Bugman Rangers Command stand that I completed some time ago. I hope that you like it.

Very, very nice. Repeat the comment about making them look individual but totally cohesive.

Ooh, very nice, I'm kind of glad though I didn't see any other painted examples before I painted these, but it's cool to see them afterwards! :)

Great work on those and it really highlights how nice the models are. I also noticed both examples were also missing the champions :(
Thanks all for the kind words!
-
These are gorgeous (in a bluff, Dwarven, non-sexual sort of way).
I don't think the champion models were very popular for any of these first RoR sets - I don't own any champions for the sets I have, I think at the time we were very sceptical about the whole 'platic base' thing and probably few were bought. Of course, the originals had also been on sale for around 2 years before the champion sets were released so there are just more of the originals around.
-
These guys are awesome!
-
Thanks! The champion and the musician of the second incarnation are on their way and will be painted to match these models. They're not the originals but at least it adds a lot more diversity to the unit :)

Yeah, fuck that original champion in his peglegged little ass - I'm not paying 60 quid for a gimp dwarf! =)
-
That is a wonderful paint job, I especially like the way the cloaks have turned out and I like the idea of the green shields - fantastic concept. They far better than what I achieved a few months back.
Does anyone have a picture of the original Bugman's champion? I don't recall there being a champion in the set you have just painted; just Bugman, standard and horn blower with 9 or 10 identical troops with each in the box set.

I posted this link (http://zemjw.blogspot.com/2011/04/bugman-rangers.html) to a blog post I did on these guys to the thread looking for the musician and champion, but hopefully it's worth repeating.
As you can see from the picture of the RR box, the champion wasn't in the set. It contained seven troopers and the command set of officer, musician and standard bearer
I thought I had the champion figure, but after checking the peg-legged drawfs I do have, he wasn't among them :(
-
All (well, most of) the RoR were sold with 8 troopers and 1 command figure. To get a full command, you had to buy 3 boxes. When Warhammer 2nd edition was released, each regiment received a boost in the shape of a champion. That's the reason why all the pre-slotta sets also have a slotta champion.
The later RoR where boxed in full sets - ie you got a full command + a bunch of troopers. None of the pre-slotta RoR made it to that stage, they were either re-done or discontinued. The only champion model carrying over to the full slotta base RoR was Mengil Manhide's champion. It's the same for both pre-slotta and the first slotta sets.

Thanks for the info and picture Phreedh - I don't remember that champion mini. I daresay it goes for several dozen quid on EBay if it ever sees the light of day. I bought my three sets in the early format of 1 command and 8 or so troops per box. I also got a couple of boxes of Harboth's Black Mountain Boys but missed out on Mengil Manhide, the goblins (can't remember their commander's name) and I think there was an ogre set in the RoR range. I got the Goblin warband, the White Dwarf characters and also the Broo - all figures in these boxes were individuals rather than identical. Sorry about the verbal there, got carried away in my excitement.
Thanks for the welcome too. :)

Yeah I was watching him too, amazing!!! I'm sure there is another peg leg isn't there? (not the second ed one but a third that cam out at the same time as the guy with arm in sling...)
-
Look great! I forgot that they also had great axes. I thought they had crossbows. Its been 20 odd years since I've seen them in person...
-
They do have crossbows, they're tucked on their right side (for us left) and partially hidden under the cloaks. The quivers are hidden there too 8)

Oh yeah those boys are tooled up, boths types of ax and crossbow!
Now I've seen them painted I might pick up a set. ude they look like lumps of lead!
-
Glad to know I'm not going senile! :D

A little update to the rangers, I received the champion and the musician from the second set (dated 1985) to paint up for this unit. Of course I had to make the paint scheme fit in and so I did. Enjoy!

These are lovely models s well and I hope they will ease the pain of missing the original musician and champion 8)

watched it a while now, very nice minis, your little fellows!
I like the red-nose-colour from the champ! Comes out really good!
best wishes
Drachenklinge
-
Thanks! They all have the red colour on their nose and the command group has it on their cheeks as well, the champion has the biggest nose though so it's more apparent 8)
-
Yep, they are indeed very nice. The later versions fit in well with the earlier ones - the paint job worked wonders in making the whole unit a cohesive one.
