Title: Moonshine Still
Post by: Boggler on October 26, 2007, 09:48:28 PM
Hi,

As part of a participation game to be run by Wessex Wargamers Winchester (my local club) at Warfare in Reading (UK), I've volunteered to make a 1920's backwoods moonshine still as the central feature in a Cthulu inspired scenario. Last year (and once before) we won the Best Participation Game trophy for 'The Thing' (I built the helicopter..not much but it looked cool) , so there's a lot at stake this year if we're going to do it again

Here's the progress so far:

I don't want it to look too 'industrial' so will be cladding the tanks in wooden strips and adding a rough stone base to the boiler. I'll also be adding some barrels and other bits and bobs.

The next step will be to add the pipework after cutting the base down to the irregular outline I've marked out.

Any of your ideas and suggestions would be very helpful  :)

Cheers

Jim

Lookin' good already. How about a dog chained up as a guard? Maybe a pile of corn cobs, apples or potatos (or whatever else your fellas might be using as the mash.)

Perhaps you could add a couple little details around the "camp" such as a shotgun leaning against a rock (for protection) or a couple moonshine jugs sittin' around from which the still operator can "sample" the product?

I'll keep watching as you post more photos! :)

Speaking of which: who makes blood hound and basset hound miniatures? Excellent for gangster settings.

I know where I can get:
Mastiffs
Altasians
Dachshound
Poodles
Pugs
Bull terriers
Dobermans
Huskies
PON (or some similar shaggy sheep dog)
Bull dogs

Hammershield, you are the true master of knowledge on all things of a lead canine nature on this forum. I think you need a new title

Megaminis produces the Fox and hounds pack they would make good Sleuth hounds.

I think they also have packs of mixed dogs one of which I am sure is a Basset hound..

Outpost also produce Sleuth hounds in their Border Reivers range and Wolf hounds in their Aztec range

Right, right... I forgot about those.

Griffin makes deer and wolf hounds.
I think Obelisk makes a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire Terrier
GW makes rottweilers in their LotR range
Copplestone makes a Snowy which is some kind of Schnauser or terrier

Thanks for your input and ideas.

I've finished the still so will (hopefully) post some photos later on today.

How about a rocking chair, with a banjo leaning against it? You could have a washing lne with a load of denim dungarees hanging from it. An old tattered Confederate flag?
An old beat-up Ford pick-up truck might look good, if you have space to fit it in.

Nice ideas...I'll see what I can come up with. I like the washing line concept in particular, and the flag (although the game's set in Arkham County so I'd have to rethink the stars and bars?).

I've also got a Days Gone By model AA ford somewhere which I could jack up on some blocks and weather down...that would really look good as an extra terrain feature! Nice

The finished still, give or take a few final extra bits:

A 28mm figure for comparison:

That is one beautiful still! From idea to the finished product. I love the copper finish on the destilling vat, the pan and the big vat. THe finish is great! It actually looks as if you could use it and make minature drams.

Just what the moonshine industry needs  :D  :D

Yes, the metallic finishes are superb, as is the weathered wood effect. Looks like you could be an early favourite for the "Best Particpation" award again

Please keep us up to date with the rest of the project!

  I just realised your sample figure is holding a crucifix up against the apparatus!
Is this some sort of subliminal puritanical message?

Thanks Guys,

The Black Scorpion armed vicar was the only figure I had to hand but I think he fits quite well...the evils of booze and all that

I'll take some photos of the game at Warfare so you can see the whole sst up. I suppose I should post them over on the Cthulhu board as there is a Arkham connection.

Incidentally, if you're going to Warfare (it's well worth it) then please come and  see the game in action and take part. It's the Wessex Wargamers Winchester 'Hillbilly Hell' participation game (we're usually located in the same hall as the competition games).

See you there!

Jim

Thanks guys,

The board was actually built for our 2004 game Terror in Tunguska but was dusted off and re-used this year. It's the combined work of the terrain gurus at our club, Al, Ian and Dickie.

Look out for more pictures of the game in Wargames Illustrated.

Unfortunately, we didn't win the trophy this year but we did get the Bronze Award which was nice. Thanks to everyone who dropped in for a game or who just watched the procedings. It's a great show so everyone went away happy

Next year's game is going definately going to win back the top slot from the 'cowboy posse' (well done BTW)

Think I might have seen the thing, and happily played on the Tunguska game ( was it at Sheffield Triples ?), wish I'd seen the Still layout in the plastic as it were.

I forgot to mention that some of the guys will be taking Hillbilly Hell to Triples in Sheffield so, if you're up North, you can see the game first hand.

Hey Boggler, I never did find the game at Warfare, where abouts were you located?

We were in the corner of the hall where the competition games and demo games were located. We were tucked away a bit so next year we'll probably get a banner or board to make us more visible. Sorry you missed us.

Yep, The Thing was a great game. If anything I think it was the best we've done. Have a look at these pictures:

The conversions were done by Ian, who devised the game and did most of the background rules writing and gamesmastering. He's got some cracking ideas for next year so if you like The Thing you're in for a treat at Warfare 2008.

The Thing game looks superb :)  It takes me back to the early 1980s and when I first saw the film. I will never forget the scene with the heart attack scene :o

Yeah that movie kept me on the edge of my seat...  I loved the scene where the Doctor's head falls off and while it is upside down it 'grows' spider legs and scuttles off...

Those miniature conversions are fantastic... I'll bet that was one fun game to play in... did you ever do a battle report for it?

Speaking of arctic, or as in this case Antarctic, adventures; new as of 9 minutes ago: Ship sinking in Antarctic waters

http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/11/23/antarctica.ship/index.html

I wonder what they hit thereout on the ocean. Atlantean continent? Great Chtulu raising? Leviathan?
