I wasn't sure wither to add this to my brothers pirate harbour project or make this separate thread. It's all eventually going to be part of the same boards anyway.
We currently getting ready to join the ranks of the high seas gamers and play some pirate wargaming. We've had ships and models for some years now. We actually played a pirate D&D game many moons ago. The likes of my pirate ship needs a total overhaul as I built it when I didn't know as much about modelling as I do now. Anyway I'm building a couple of wee extra things to go along with colin's stuff...
First up is just what ever pirate game needs....a skull cave entrance. It's built by using the foam you get in the likes of sofas. Just rip it up enough and eventually you get to the shape you want. I'm covering it in plaster to harden it.
I'm also planning to make a couple of small deserted islands with palm trees on them, maybe a small ship wreck(if I can get it to work) and some treasure markers.
Cheers for looking!

Stop showing off ;)
-
Great!
Waiting to see it painted.
Thanks for sharing.

lol
Excellent stuff :)

Sofa foam.
Awesome!

Just a wee update...

This is going to be Captain Jack Red's hideout(my pirate captain for LOHS). I believe the cage is called a gibbet. It's for all those nasty navy types that cross his path!!
I tried making one with bars using solder, but I wasn't happy at how it was going and changed it. I think this versions better.
I've also made a couple of wee deserted islands for our board. Again my usual, all cheap and cheerful! No expensive materials used. Some bits of stiff wire to form the trees, wrapped in masking tape then string and the leaves are kitchen foil, doubled up to make them thicker and cut to a rough leaf shape. Still WIP.....

Now that is really inspiring stuff: properly piratey (albeit in a fantasy sorta way). Great idea and execution on the palm tree and I'm really liking the water effect, too. I can't wait to see all your pieces finished and photographed together. And yep, a gibbet it be.
-
Excellent painting on the rocks! :-* Never thought the cartonboard wouldn't warp :o
-
Cheers guys! It's corragated cardboard and it does warp slightly but if your gentle you can pull it back without damaging anything!
-
Looking good,
I've seen foam used on rocky outcrops on some model railway layouts, but I've not used it myself - how does it take the plaster finish? do you use a "liquid" mix and stipple it on with a brush?
RMZ
-
Arhh, Tis a fine sight! Splendid stuff Andy and all executed with such ease. Lovely work on the gibbet. :)
-
Very nice :-* :-*
The second giblet (My idea) is a lot better.
-
The plaster isn't watered down. Just apply it straight from the bucket with a large brush and the sponge soaks it up.
-
Absolutely brilliant! But what about the rum?
-
That skull cave looks fantastic! The stone is great, not the usual grey colour.

Cheers!

amazing work :o the finished article i great
-
Looking great :-* :-* :-*
-
Andy you're a star!!!
Funny thing though, because my group and I have just decided (for the third year in a row) to start pirate gaming!
So far aiming on June 2012.
Looking forward to following your progress and maybe even seeing some of it in November. :)
-
Looking great :-* :-* :-*
I second that! Terrific stuff :-* :-* :-*

Cheers guys!
Has anybody ever tried to make a sea monster for their pirate game? I'm thinking of Pirates of the Carribian here with maybe tentacles coming out of the water?
How would you make one and how would you use it in a game?
-
Cheers guys!

We discussed this only yesterday and the way I'm going to go about it is making a squid head and 8 seperately based tentacles.
In game it'll be a warband with the head as a leader and a rule of coherency (7'' or so). We're using Songs of Balds and Hemos
What would be drastically fantastic was to make the tentacles flexible some way and let them wrap around ships and boats! lol

Cheers guys!

I don't want to play in that game :o
How many dabloons would it cost to add it to your crew lol

Shouldn't be too difficult for a man of your obvious talents. :D Will look forward to the WIP shots tomorrow and the finished model say saturday? ;)

Second island finished...
I really like Dr The Vikings idea for the monster, making it on several bases and treating the tentacles and head as another crew. I hope you don't mind me stealing that idea Dr?
I've tried making a couple of test pieces and if these work I'll make the rest of the creature. This is hopefully just a start....
The main body is pink foam but couldn't think of anything else to use for 'suckers' than solder made into rings and glued on. Hopefully when they're covered in polyfilla they'll look more natural. Does anybody have any better ideas I can steal?.
I think if I get to try any other tentacles I'll make them more 'bendy' looking.
-
Love your stuff Andy,cracking :-*
-
Lovin' the tentacles :-*

Steal away! I wrote it here because I wanted you to steal it lol
Gasket rings for water cranes? They're rubber?
-
tentacles look great.. for the suckers solder bent into rings sounds easy enough, but if you cant be bothered with all that bending why not use some
rubber 'O' rings you can get a pack of a couple of hundred assorted ones off ebay for a few quid
-
Steal away! I wrote it here because I wanted you to steal it lol
Gasket rings for water cranes? They're rubber?
Shocking!! :-[ I'm I your tester person? See how I make an arse of it then learn from my mistakes! ;)
Gasket rings? Is that like rubber washers? How do you get your paint to stick without flaking off?
I don't want to play in that game :o
How many dabloons would it cost to add it to your crew lol
I was thinking a game with the monster would be a game for someone in our campaign to beat up to gain money for their crew and catch up with whoevers winning.

Tentacled monster from the deep, eh?

love the monster/tentacles ideas...
this may be a bit later, but Blacktree Design do a gibbet in their Tony Ackland range... coincidentally order it myself today...
-
Fram-that was the topic that got me thinking of doing my own, gaming, version. Thanks for the links again.
Cheers for the heads up EG. It's very easy to make your own if you've got sone thin plastic card. I just realised, I've got their guy hanging from the gallows model.
-
ah... I reckon I could escape from yours and I'm no slim jim ;)

Cheers for the heads up EG. It's very easy to make your own if you've got sone thin plastic card. I just realised, I've got their guy hanging from the gallows model.
There are two things on that model that just really blow me away: The water (IN-CRED-IBLE! The texture! The gloss! The incredible colour! The perfect shapes! Just the right amount of transparency!) and the texturing and sheen on the tentacles themselves.
-
That guy took years to do that diorama. There's no way I'd be able to compete with someone like that. His took a lot of planning and he had to make a mould for his waves and cast them up. Of you go to his blog you realise how far he's gone. There's fish in that there water!! :o
Anyway here's my pall comparison

I filled in the solder rings with polyfilla and drilled a hole in the centre for the sucker.
I've got a few more already on the table made using scraps of foam. I'll get them finished soon.

Lovely work Andy, the Kraken Wakes :D
-
Great stuff. But have you painted any pirates yet??? ???
-
Lovely!
lol
-
very nice :D
-
We're doing a 'pirate weekend' in June 2012 - you're happily welcome to stick by. lol
-
Hey, for a quicker job, those tentacles actually look great! Nice wet sheen texture and the suckers look just fine.
-
Great stuff. But have you painted any pirates yet??? ???
Pirates? Do you need pirates for a pirate game?
Thanks guys!! The tentacles are nearly finished. I'll show them all once they're painted. For the time being I've been working on a ship for my crew. Myself and my brother had built ships previously for a role playing game, but I thought my one could do with an overhaul....
Anything that's painted belongs to the original ship. The masts have been moved about from the original, cut in half, bound together with string, crows nests added and extended. The basic ship shape was quite boxy at the front so I've tried to add some spars and some detail to the bow to make it less noticeable.
Anybody got any advice?
-
"Anybody got any advice?"
Build two :D :D :D
It does look a tad top heavy though ???
-
Wot Mac said as long as the second is for me! ;) Nice isn't the word. I love how you dressed up the bow!
-
I love the way it looks a just a tad wonky or haphazard.
Reminds me of Secret of The Monkey Island. lol
-
Thanks again guys.
I've managed to finish some more of the tentacles but I'm now stuck! I can't think of a way of making a decent head.....
Has anybody else made anything similar?
-
Well, you could just make the tip of the head (A coneheads-type rounded cone, with a sort-of chevron-shape as a crest) poking up above water. Or you could make an open beak, a maw you can feed sailors to after they're ensnared by a tentacle.
-
That sounds good Fram! Here's what I think I might be able to make...
I think the beak would be easier to make than something with rows of teeth(although that would be cool!) I may make the mouth closer to the head than this picture.
-
Well I made some progress. It still looks blocky, but I hope it gives an idea of where I'm going......
-
I am sure it will look spectacular when completed. ;D
-
that's really promising... I will be following you!
-
Well I think I've done enough for this. It is only going to be for one game anyway!!
I've tried to add some fins and some rough skin around the eyes and beak using toilet paper covered in glue for some texture.
-
Thata monster! :-*
now I just need to build it all my self too.. lol
-
WOW that looks great. A Royal Navy squid great thanks :D
-
Shit, I've missed this one somehow ::)
That all looks fantastic Andy :-* :o :-*
You built the squid for one game :o Madness :D
cheers

I'll never look at calamari the same way again. Really beautiful paint job too!

You do know what you need now. ROCK LOBSTER!
-
Thanks very much guys. What's a rock lobster? I think after the ships finished I really need to get back to doing stuff for our groups game for BLAM.
-
Thanks very much guys. What's a rock lobster?
This link should tell you everything you need to know about Rock Lobsters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDZy6-fMCw4)

As long as noone posts pics of bikini-whales... o_o
-
Andy, that sea monster! :o Very nice! As mentioned in Colin's thread... you're ending up in my basement too. Don't worry, there'll be plenty of people to chat with while you work on my projects. I've got special pink fluffy cuffs for Hammers:
-
Thanks again for all the nice comments guys!
Just a small update this time. I've made and painted a couple of wee boats for my crew. As well as that I'm nearly finished the big ship too. Just the mast, windows and other details to go.
As for the rock lobsters and whales suggestions, they might make good subs for the 'Battle of the Aquanauts' thread I'm planning to get back into this week. Any other ideas for fish shaped subs welcome.....
-
amazing :) Love everything! (just maybe the grass on the bases of the pirates when in the sloop... :P but that's necessary ;)
:-*

Beg to differ. Pirates are probably most found on ships and in harbours (occasionaly on palmy beaches) I think they would benefit more from basesg like these :
which can easily be made from balsa wood or you can buy 'em here :
http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/wood-c-3_14.html (http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/wood-c-3_14.html)
-
I love the painting of the woodwork on the boats. It actually looks like wood grain should at that scale. Most impressive!
-
Love the concept of those bases, but i really don't like the sculpts! :( brillian idea, though.

You wouldn't happen to be using an airbrush now would you Andy?
I've just gotten hold of one but seem disturbingly unable to put it to good use...

Join the club. I've only been using it to paint basecoats and large surfaces on some buildings.
I have been practicing some dot painting : a friend told me to try and spray fine dots to get the feel of the airbrush and to avoid drooling.
-

No, I'm afraid all my painting is done by brush. In this case it was one of those cheap ones you get with childrens paint sets. It's got really short rough bristles and all I've done is use a kind of dry brush technique but wipe less of the paint of before applying.
I really like those bases! I wish I had thought about that at the start! My only small quibble would be that those particular ones look more that they belong to a shipwreck because of the bits of grass, but it would have been dead easy and a lot more interesting if I had made more variety in the basing. Maybe some with cobblestones, some with balsa wood on the bases and one or two on sand.
-
The added sea monster is kraken (groan)! Smashing stuff :-*
-
I haven't added to this thread for a while, but I thought it would be better to continue this than start a new.
With my brother and myselfs BLAM game out of the road and my Big ben finished(just waiting for clock faces!) I thought I would do some more pirate stuff. We were looking for some buildings for a pirate town and I fancied doing it in a fantasy style. A couple of guys have started something like this before......
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=27080.0
I really love their style so I'm going to try something similar. I've made a few drawings of stuff I want to make...
I started making the building that looks as if a ship has crashed through it...

....what do you think? Too fantasy?
For completeness I also made a dice tower. It's already been posted in another thread but I thought I'd leave some pictures here too...
.....probably to many rock skulls for one thread but anyway!
Cheers!!
-
Wonderful stuff Andy. Your ability to turn concepts from your imagination into reality is astonishing. You are a truly talented
G*T indvidual ;) :)
-
Really nice start to the piece.Love the concept drawings too.
-
Oh, so many good ideas to borrow!
-
Why did you score out git, Nick? Totally right :D
Very, very nice. Now you have to build the rest of the town because it won't fit on with mine.
-
:o
You ARE on a roll, aren't you.
-
You're going to die!
Man that is awesome.
Could you explain - fast - how to make those palm trees? In a really fiddly and detailed way?
How does your stockpile look? I mean what do you have lying around foam/balsa wise,..,. or do you shop for every idea?
-
Cheers guys!!

Should I be worried about the death thing? ???
Stockpile consists mostly of cornflake packet card, mounting board and some blue foam. There is some bits of plastic rod and balsa left from other projects that do eventually see some use.
Palm trees-
1. Take some stiff wire and twist together. Leave some wire sticking out at angles at the top.
2. Use tape and wrap around the trunk of the wire to bulk it out.
3. Wind twine around, over the tape all the way up to your branches.
4. Use thick tin foil or use PVA glue and double normal stuff over, and cut out leaf
shapes.
5. Glue leafs in place.
6. Get a beer. Step back and admire work
(http://i681.photobucket.com/albums/vv179/andym2105/ffb88590.jpg)

Talent, vision and execution.
AndyM for First Minister! ;)
Great stuff.

THANK YOU!
Although I must admit this bit puzzles me slightly:
or use PVA glue and double normal stuff over, and cut out leaf

double normal stuff?!
-
THANK YOU!
Although I must admit this bit puzzles me slightly:
double normal stuff?!
The tinfoil you get from most supermarkets is too flimsy and thin, so all I do is fold a wee bit of tinfoil in half and glue it together to give a sheet twice as thick. Then once that's dry I cut out my leaf shape. It makes the leafs more robust. I hope that helps......
-
I think that's my first pirate building finished....

All I've got to do now is coat it with a thin lair of watered down polyfilla and paint it.
-
:o
The boat crash is very nice and melds with the building well. Love the sketch of the grog shop - can't wait for that.
I have been banned from Pirates at the moment (well till a get a boat built for my wife from 20+ years ago) but I'll not stop peeking in from the corner if that's OK?

Nice weathercock.

Fantastic, loving the weathercock :-*

Looking great :-* :-* :-*
The weather cock is just showing off though lol lol lol
-
Looking really good Andy!
-
Bollocks!!!!!!!
My layer of polyfilla/PVA wasn't enough!! :( I should have painted the foam parts by hand first then spray painted the rest!! I'll need to re-do the lower walls and chimney!!!
Ah well, lesson learned!!
-
Eroded by salt sea spray, obviously. You do see coastal buildings and gravestones with that sort of effect.
-
I quite like it like that :)
Looks like it's made of volcanic rock...
-
Bummer :'(
-
Get an airbrush for f's sake!
-
Get an airbrush for f's sake!
I'm afraid I was too late to ask Santa!! ;)
Ill go back and fix it properly but in the meantime, I finished building the grog stand.
This is what I was aiming for...
And this is how it turned out....

I used this guys technique to build the row boat...
http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/t4364p25-another-attempt-at-a-pirate-ship (http://boringmordheimforum.forumieren.com/t4364p25-another-attempt-at-a-pirate-ship)
I couldn't think of any easier way to build a boat without it looking too flat. He uses his technique to build big galleons but it does work for smaller ships too. You need to take your time and glue a few balsa planks in place and let it dry properly before you cut them to size and start on the next planks!
The barrels are plastic ones from Renedra and that's greenstuff I used to make foam coming out of one of the cups. Does grog have foam?
-
Looking good :-*
How about a figure for scale?
-
Great!! :-* :-*
-
Pic for scale.....
.....I'm afraid all me pirates at yours Colin!
-
Really nice, it reminds me the good old Monkey Island video games ! :-*
-
Wonderful, can't wait to see it all painted up. I love the little ship weather vane.
But a little business advice: If I were selling booze to pirates, I would not advertise the fact that it was watered down. :)
-
Grog most definitely does not have foam - unless something
terrible hilarious has happened. ;D
-
stunning work.
However, the pot and plant has me confused. A pirate with green fingers ?
Could be wormwood. psychadelic grog anyone ?
-
Man are you a building machine!
Lovely stuff! :-*
-
Full of character as always :-* 8)
cheers
James
-
Fantastic project! Are you ever sleeping?

-
I'm afraid I was too late to ask Santa!! ;)
The local department store has a starter airbrush for only £8...
Don't know if it's any good.
-
But a little business advice: If I were selling booze to pirates, I would not advertise the fact that it was watered down. :)
Watered down? The two barrels are both going to be grog, one with two skulls on it and one extra strength with three.
Grog most definitely does not have foam - unless something terrible hilarious has happened. ;D
Ah well, somebody's being blowing bubbles in his pint! ;)
stunning work.
However, the pot and plant has me confused. A pirate with green fingers ?

I quite fancied having anything I do for this colourful and cheerie. Just a change from everything being dark and sinister. I've had enough of 'In the grim darkness of the future....' stuff.

...you can't tell but the wood on the ship part and the roof tiles are all different colours but I seem to have lost some of them with my camera!
Cheers for the nice comments guys!

Lovely stuff :)

That house is truly superb! :-*
-
Very lovely!
Could use a little 'pang' colour on the walls.. but I'm no expert
-
How did you build those round ship-like windows? All from card? Looking very good!
-
Wonderful as always :)
-
Lovely paint job :-* :-* :-*
Meant to ask what are the two wooden bits either side of the door?

Looks like davits to me.

Yeah...eh...thats....what they're meant to be. I wouldn't just glue bits on willy-Molly in the hope that it looked right!! ;) ::)
@Dr. The Viking- what's a 'pang' colour? Is that something to brighten it up?
@Admiral Benbow- the windows are indeed card. Cereal box card. Cut using a circular cutter with wee bits of solder wire for hinges and rivets.
Thanks again for the encouraging comments guys!!

Watered down? The two barrels are both going to be grog, one with two skulls on it and one extra strength with three.
Grog was by definition watered down. It's what the navy gave to sailors. Often four parts water to one part rum, but occasionally stronger. Pirates would surely want to buy their rum neat?

The grog stand is now painted as well....

Do you think it's too dull?

Only just caught this thread and all I can say is...............BLOODY HELL!
:o :o :o
Everything on here is superb, but my favourite has to be the boat-house.
Simply great!
:-* :-* :-*

Could use a little more weathering.
Like, that jolly-boat actually looks perfectly usable, which belies it being turned into a roof. If it looked more worn, it would make more sense that it had ceased use on the water. Also, it seems iffy that the stand's wood and the boat's wood would be equally aged - did someone build a ramshackle stand with a perfectly new boat as the roof? So maybe just wear the boat more and not the lower part of the stand?
Love the overall look though.

Do you think it's too dull?
Ah, well, uh.
I don't see any broken bar stools/tables or drunk pirates sleeping in front of the stand or having a good oldfashioned fistfight :D
Seriously though, only thing I can think of to liven this up is some bird poo on top from those wretched seagulls. After all, This is supposed to be a seaside setting, isn't it? lol

To be honest I would think its too dark than dull. If its outside the wood would bleach over time?
-
Greawesome!!! :-* :-* :-*
I think it will lively up when there's some colourful pirates being facilitated at it lol
-
Brilliant Andy. Fabulous attention to detail.
-
Really, realy nice. Perhaps a lighter drybrush on the hull to sun bleach it a bit more, but thats a minor point. Its great :)
-
Man! That's great Andy :-* :-* :-*
