Title: "Kresowiec" - Well, that dident work....

I had a Sunday of not doing all too much today, So I set myself a little project, I would scratchbuild the Polish interwar improvised armoured car "Kresowiec". The thing was an armoured motor-plough, so probably one of the only war-ploughs in the world ever. I was making a model 'in the spirit' of the original rather than trying to make a true model of it that was to act in as an improvised armoured car for my 15mm Polish Home Army.

Anyway, after some hours work, I ended up with this monstrosity;  :-[

I am utterly disapointed with myself really. It looks awful! Im going to take this as a sign that I should stop trying to scratchbuild anything ever again. I assumed it wouldent be too hard to make, as it was only a boiler sticking out of the front of a box, with some guns poking out! I even left out the rear sponsons, what I thought would be the 'hard part', but its still awful.

Could someone who can make things make one in 15mm/ 1:100 scale and cast it up so I can have one? Please? I'll be your friend......

Primer it.

I promise you it will look better. THEN fix anything you see.

My thoughts exactly. Don't give up just yet.
Paint it up and even if you still don't like it, you'll be able to spot the defaults and you'll probably have learnt a thing or two in the process.

how did You folkes put it in here? "I' ll third that - and violently so!"  :D

Actually, what is Your problem? The mini shown is 15mm? It looks perfect! The only thing missing so far, were some rivets, nothing more! Use some "round-shaped-profil-strips" made of plastic, cut some small "leaves" from it, that's all. I think, some small GreenStuff bubbles pressed onto a drop of glue would do the job, too.

My first scratch build "beauty" was a small brewery for my dwarves. It looked like an ugly pile of garbage, after I built it ... but, You know? It actually WAS! After priming it it looked like a small brewery! Be brave - prime it, You will be surprised - PROMISSED!

Yes, prime it first. As i like to say, paint hides a multitude of sins. As a tip or hint, next time when cutting cardboard for paneling, measure it all with a set square and a ruler and cut it with a shard knife. When that's done stick it unpainted side out.
You think thats bad, you need to see some of the stuff i first did for Necromunda, the barricades didn't even sit flat on the ground when finished :P

Looks way better when primed! Exactly the same thought!  lol

I'd second priming before writing this off, I think if you made the boiler bit bigger it would look fine, rivets would also make it look a bit sharper but I am way to lazy to do rivets myself lol

Other than that I think it looks okay.  :)

OK no choice it must now be primed.

Thank you for all the kind words. Like. Really. Thanks. Made me feel alot better. I added rivits using the 'PVA and a paintbush method' and they look....ok....ish. I'll try plastic rod next time, you know, cut up like german sausage and glued on.
Also, I have painted it. I'll Post some pictures later, perhaps with some Polish home guard alongside them. It still needs a large white eagle on a red backgound and some Polish war solgans. Oh, and it has been dubed 'War Pig' (or whatever that is in polish - I'll go look at google translate), So that will be painted on somewhere.

Looks funny. But Im rather happy with it!

Thanks again for all the nice words! Will post a picture or 5 later.

Hand Painted.

Tell me what you think? Does paint forgive my sinfull-scratch-work?

well, it does!

It looks rather good, I think! And we were right, priming is almost always an improvement! Therefore in itself pure neccessity!

Surely some things can be put different or even better next time, but it will be a good start - and! - wait until this ugly Beauty will wipe the grin from its first enemy's face! kaBOOM - eat this, sinister fiend!

No, really! It's nice and very good you walked this to the end! I would like to see more of these!

best wishes

I, for one, think that turned out rather well.  :)
Not a showroom model, but definitly something to wreak havoc on the battlefield (or at least give some farmer a feeling of security when plowing his fields  lol )

Some tips for future projects :
consider using sturdier materials like foamcore or even styrene sheet.
I f you do stick with paper/card create stiffeners to put in the box-like models. they'll help to maintain even surfaces that might cave in without them.
For rivets, the sliced salami method has been mentioned before or if you have access to a workshop, create your own punch like I did :
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=29648.msg355885#msg355885 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=29648.msg355885#msg355885)
As for the PVA method, I think you need to set some glue aside so it thickens before applying. It'll make for more pronounced shapes.
I believe I used that technique once, but can't remember wether I used PVA or superglue (gel). :?

Is "Wojny Swinia", Doom pig or pig of Doom?

I had a Polish speaking study partner in Law schoool.  My very limited Polish vocabulary had more to do with eating and drinking.

5 Points to 'leadfool'

'Wojny Swinia!' translates as 'War Pig!', but I only woked it out using google translate, so 'Doom Pig!' is probably right too. I think Doom Pig sounds cooler anyway.

War Pig is cool too.
This has the potential to turn into 2 new threads, one with multiple translations of War Pig into various languages.
The second thread a Workshop theme for "Make your own War Pig"  There could be VSF, Interwar, fantasy, etc.  I can not actually participate, it would not be Kosher for my D'Isreali Army.

Looks pretty good, especially painted!
I envy you the skill to write anything on the models - I myself have problems even with simple stuff like numbers.  ;)

The slogan should be "Świnia Wojny", though; now it's ungrammatical.

Oh. Damn and Blast. I cant be bothered to change it. I should have found someone that talked the lingo rather than trust google translate. Is it war pig or doom pig out of interest?

And, Thanks for the correction :)

War pig. Doom pig would be "świnia zagłady".

I hope you plan to continue your Home Army project, cause I'd love to see more.
When it comes to improvised armour, take a look at Kubuś, the armoured car from the Warsaw Uprising: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubu%C5%9B (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubu%C5%9B)

of course you have problems seeing its "win" you made it and as a fellow scratchy i know it seems to look better in your head, nuff said on that. keep building it is a good model and paint does make all things better. :)

War pig it is then! Thanks!

I'll post up some pictures a bit later. Ive got a fair bit done since I knocked this one together. Ive got about a 1/4 of the force based up now and about half of that painted.

I know about Kubus. I would add a model of it to my little force if I could find one in 15mm scale. If anyone knows where I can get one then Id be your friend.

Seeing its "win" eh? Is that a Sheenism? Im a bit more happy about it now. Next thing on the 'to make out of nothingness' list is a fleet of 10mm Scale Land Ironclads!

Thanks
