Title: Cheetors Judge Dredd Stuff: Emerald Isle Judge 16/03/14
Post by: cheetor on July 01, 2011, 10:49:03 AM
Having been stockpiling my Judge figures for about a decade now I finally got around to painting more than one of them recently.

I am particularly pleased with how these guys came out (the rather astonished looking Psi judge on the left notwithstanding...)

There are more photos, a some talk about uniforms and Mongoose vs Foundry on my blog (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/07/01/mega-city-justice-department-pt-1/) for anyone interested.

I have ~20 more of these guys in the pipeline and I hope to post them here as they get done over the next month or two (with a bit of luck).

Let me know what you think if you get a chance please :)

Wonderful work, particularly on the yellows. The bases are also very nice and subtle, especially on Dredd.

very nice, they are the Law indeed  :) about 20 more to come? :-*

Thanks!

More or less all of the Foundry Judges plus the currently available Mongoose stuff yet to come (plus the inevitable Lawmasters and other bits as Mongoose release them).  I think that the next thing on the table will be one of the Holocaust suits, just for a bit of variety.  After that will likely be a few more Street Division and some more named characters like Hershey, McGruder, Cal etc.

Wonderful work, particularly on the yellows. The bases are also very nice and subtle, especially on Dredd.

Dredd was painted from a white undercoat back in 2003.  The white undercoat was used purely to get a bright, comic book yellow.  I spent quite a bit of time on that figure back then and while I took numerous short-cuts I spent a while painting it all the same.  The yellow was the old thin GW Bad Moon yellow mixed with orange ink and brought up to white in various tedious stages.  Even so, all I can see when I look at that figure are the flaws.  Painting yellow is painful.

Fast forward to 2011 and I wanted to be able to churn the rest of the Judges out assembly line style, so they got a black undercoat.  The yellow used this time was GW Foundation Iyanden Darksun over black followed by a wash of old GW orange ink, then layered with Model Colour Flat yellow and subsequently a MC Flat Yellow + a little white layer.  It gives a nice comic book, rubberized padding look I think.

The base on Dredd is filler mixed with paint subsequently drybrushed and with patches of white sand added and stained.

These days I base everything with plain old sand from a beach about ten minutes from my home.  Its quick, unobtrusive and pretty generic.  It doesnt appeal to everyone but I dont have time to go crazy on bases any more, I have far too many figures waiting to be painted.

I am also of the opinion that a lot of bases are overworked these days and that they distract focus from the figure.  The occasional piece of base detail goes a long way, but I see loads of bases around that just look far too "busy" for my tastes.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bloody awesome job there, Paul! :-*

The fact that Judges have an established scheme (rather than one that I had to make up) makes some elements of painting them easier, but it also tends to make people more critical as many have a definite idea of what Judges should look like.

Im glad that you like them Mattias :)

Absolutely lovely, old bean.  :-* You're putting me off finishing mine now...

I think for the most part the Foundry/Mongoose figures stack up well together, and the wonderfully consistent painting serves to mask any differnces in uniform. Then again, if you look at some of the old strips drawn by Ewins/MacCarthy, many of the uniforms changed from judge to judge, with some of the specialist med and tek judges being proper weird looking.

Sorry, went rambling a bit there (poor old fella), top job, looking forward to seeing more.  :)

Nice job on the judges! Any bad guys in the works?

Thanks :)

I thought that the Judges were the bad guys... ;)

I have loads planned, but who knows what gets to fruition.

I have Dark Judges, Ape Gangsters, Robots, Undercity dwellers (Copplestone/EM4), Cursed Earth Mutants (kitbashed plastics), Mobsters, Batters, a Sov Spy and Judge, about ten Necromunda gangs etc sitting in various stages of preparation, but I dont know what I will do after these guys.  I hope to stick at the Judges until I have all of the guys that I currently own painted and decide after that.  We will see how iron my resolve is (or likely, isnt).

Absolutely lovely, old bean.  :-* You're putting me off finishing mine now...

Thanks, but I doubt it.  Your Judges are ace.

I think for the most part the Foundry/Mongoose figures stack up well together, and the wonderfully consistent painting serves to mask any differnces in uniform.

They are close enough for my purposes.  It reminds me of painting RT era Space Marines.  They all look a little different, with slightly varying dimensions, but a consistent colour scheme pulls them together I think.

Then again, if you look at some of the old strips drawn by Ewins/MacCarthy, many of the uniforms changed from judge to judge,

I was just admiring some of the screwy hairstyled Psi Judges in some 1985 Ewins Anderson Psi Division stories actually.  Wacky and definitively MC1.

with some of the specialist med and tek judges being proper weird looking.

And all the better for it I think.  Best not to lock down the details on those things, allow room for expression by the illustrator while keeping the overall feeling loyal to the source.

I have some of the newer Mongoose Judges sprayed ready for paint right now and they have a different style again from either the early Mongoose (Bob Naismith?  Bobby Jackson?) or the Foundry (Tim Prow I think) stuff.  As long as they dont look *too* incongruous (which is a matter of taste) I find that the difference in sculpting styles keeps my interest up while painting.

Sorry, went rambling a bit there (poor old fella), top job, looking forward to seeing more.  :)

Ramble about Judge Dredd all you like.  I certainly wont stop you :)

Very nice work. The colours all work well together. The green on the knee pads and other items is very subtle. It works well. How did you do it?

I painted Dredd himself (the guy in the middle foreground with the yellow rather than gold eagle pad and different basing) a long time ago.  As a result I dont have a record of the colours that I used on him Im afraid.

Everybody elses green areas were done as follows:

Black undercoat
Overbrush of GW Foundation Knarloc Green
A coat of Tamiya Clear Green and water at 1:1
A layer/edging of an old Warzone paint called "Scrub Green" (its an olive colour with a little yellow and white in it).

Thats it, pretty straightforward.  I didnt use any technique other that drybrushing/overbrushing and layering.

I am currently paining some armoured judges.  The green areas on those will include an additional small lighter highlight, to make those areas look like they are made of some thing more rigid than the cloth like areas.

I hope that helps :)

Always wanted to do the whole 2000AD thing, myself but had to be realistic about whether or not I would EVER find the time.
You have opened up that old can of worms again now.

Brilliant stuff - I always love to see well-painted Dredd minis. Nostalgia, and all that. Any plans for gaming with them?

Thanks.

I plan to give the Judge Dredd Miniatures Game rules a try.  They are available free in living rulebook format from RPGNow via the Mongoose site (http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/miniature/detail.php?qsID=1847&qsSeries=65).

Like many "mature" gaming groups my group struggles to find systems that suit us. Compared to many skirmish game systems JDMG looks to me to have a lot of things going for it.  The fact that it is set in the Dredd-verse is gravy :)

I also plan to use the figures in other systems (The Rules With No Name, maybe AE Bounty, Necromunda as an outside possibility) but JDMG first.  Our big weekend long test of the system is scheduled for just under three weeks time.

If it works out then I hope to get my enthusiasm levels up enough to make some rough and ready Mega City terrain.  Until then Dredd and co will be chasing creeps who have made their hideouts in the Cursed Earth.

Great job, will be keeping an eye on this thread, for sure.

Thanks.  I hope to have the next batch up on Wednesday (real life permitting).

Looking forward to the rest of your Judges and Perps, as you paint them!

I got a pair of Holocaust Judges painted over the weekend and a couple of (dodgy) photos taken today.

A couple more photos are on my blog (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/07/05/mega-city-justice-department-pt-2/).

They were a fun change of pace from the regular Judges and good practice for painting some Lawmasters once Mongoose release the retooled version.

Comments and criticisms all welcome, as ever :)

Back to painting some more familiar Judges again now.

Terrain too? Cool! Mega-City One would be a nightmare to build (I'm talking about a small section here, of course), buy it would look EPIC!

It would, but my efforts will have a healthy dose of practicality inserted.  More details about that once I have more research and planning done for it.  Its all about the miniatures for the time being :)

Dredd is a biker cop through and through.  Any miniature representation of the MC1 Justice Dept has to include a few Lawmasters.  The impossible look of the huge tyres and styling just makes it even more appealing to me :)

Mongoose have been threatening to include rules that incorporate Lawmaster Perp chases into the their Judge Dredd Miniatures Rules.  I think that gaming that with miniatures that I have painted will be a lifetime hobby highlight... if it materialises.

Painting a 28mm Lawmaster or two will scratch an itch that I have had for over twenty years :)

That Holocaust Mk. II is far too recognizable as a re-worked SST Grizzly suit (or the other type), otherwise nice minis.

That Holocaust Mk. II is far too recognizable as a re-worked SST Grizzly suit

Which really only matters if the viewer is familiar with the Grizzly though.  Players unfamiliar with the death throes of the SST range would be none the wiser :)

Actually I think that the styling of the Grizzly helmet to look like the Manta tank turret (which in turn looks like a stylised Judge helmet) was a great move.  The addition of the screwy (but very in keeping with the setting) big boots brings the figure quite nicely into the Dredd-verse if you ask me :)

I hope to get a few judges painted this summer, but time is... restricted....  :?

I had some of these Judge figures in the to-do pile for nearly ten years.  You can never tell which project will bubble to the top next.

Excellent brushwork and I love power armor in general, but those poses seem odd to me.

I agree about the poses actually.  The HS1 is sort of standing there and doing nothing.

The HS2 is a multi part kit but when I got bought it from the Mongoose stand at Salute it came straight from their display cabinet already pre-assembled by their staff.  I dont think that I would have spread the HS2 figures arms out so widely if I had assembled it personally.

Thanks for the feedback :)

Exactly - I just shoved in about 50 old 2nd Ed. 40K plastic orks and gretchin at the top of the list for a splash-on and trying out Warpath (and no, it's NOT a fantastic set of rules, but I want to try it out, OK?  ;))

I think a razor saw, a drill, some wire, and glue might fix that? Looks like the right arm coul be re-posisioned in a firing stance? Not that I would like to experiment on a figure that big/expensive...  ::)

No doubt, but I try to avoid that sort of thing as much as possibly these days.

Although I have hundreds of converted miniatures, I rarely engage it that sort of thing now for two main reasons: 1) it slows down my output quite severely and 2) because my group doesnt play in any sort of tournament scene where seeing the same miniatures over and over again happens, we tend to be happy with most of our figures off-the-peg now: they dont need to be converted to stand out.

Having said all that I do have a Wally Squad (undercover) Judge conversion in the offing :)  The reason for converting that is to try and make the figure look more like a character from the Dredd strip though, rather than to remedy a bland pose.

If I get around to a second HS1 suit at some point in the future I will likely do some rearranging to it to make it unique.

Whoa! Those Holocaust suits are brilliant! Fantastic work. Completely understand about putting models before terrain, as far as priorities are concerned, but I will wait as patiently as possible nonetheless to see what you do with MC1 when you get to it. Based on the models you produce for this thread, and all your others, it's going to look cool.
Keep it coming - this is a wonderful thread.

I managed a full days gaming using Mongooses Judge Dredd Miniature Game rules a while back.  My thoughts on them along with some photos of the pretty primitive looking games that we played are here (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/07/27/the-day-the-law-was-tried/).
Synopsis: I like the rule set.

Suitably spurred on by enthusiasm for gaming Dredd I set about painting some more figs, shown below.  Click the linked names beneath for info on why I choose that particular variant of the uniform scheme etc.

Senior Judge Hershey (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/08/17/mega-city-justice-department-judge-hershey/)
(I dont know what the grey dot on her hair is.  Its gone from the figure now anyway)

The above shot is all of my Justice Department so far.  Not as technically spectacular as some of the works of art that crop up around here pretty often, but I am very happy with them as a gaming figures.  I also get a kick out of painting up my own take on characters from a lifelong interest.

Finally, this guy below is a "Jimp", a Judge impersonator (and one of the reasons why I altered the title of the thread).

Jimp (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/09/14/mega-city-creeps-jimp/)

I am very close to finishing some Dark Judges and will put them up next.  Progress is slow though, loads of other real life stuff is slowing output.

Lovely stuff, Cheetor, as always, and that's a great shot of the whole group (love those holocaust suits). I think you capture the black/blue colour from the comics really well, and the yellow, of course is spot on - so tough to paint a good yellow too, so it's twice as impressive.
Any more thoughts/progress on the terrain front? I ask because I'm on the brink of doing a Death Race type game in 28mm, and I'm thinking of terrain - grubby, industrial, urban terrain. Got me thinking MC1 of course!

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

very 4-colour printing

The four colour, comic book look was deliberate.  I have had quite enough ret-conned, re-imagined, deconstructed comic book stuff thank you very much.  These guys are supposed to look as comic book and even cartoony as I can get away with.  Im glad that a comics fan like yourself approves :)

Thanks.  Painting the yellow is a pain. Close inspection reveals flaws but on the whole I am pleased with how it came out.

The blue/black undersuits are fine as is (even if the highlights are are a bit crude in places) but if I were to do it all over again I would probably uses the slightly brighter undersuit colours that I used on the Jimp.  They pop a little better.

I am currently concentrating my terrain efforts on post apoc, Cursed Earth type stuff at the moment, although I am stockpiling bits for use for a sci-fi urban setting.  The approach that I am likely to take for the urban stuff is a bit retro, with a lot of polystyrene packing elements with various amounts of set dressing on them being the current plan.

I have a couple of scans at home from a White Dwarf from 1988 or so that show a crude but somewhat charming table that was used for a JD game at Games Day back then.  That is the sort of thing that I am going for.  I will put up them up here when I get a chance.

I wont get to that terrain until 2012 at least though.

Great work - especially on the yellow.  For some reason I have an urge to paint some of my old gw arbites :)

I picked up the current Arbites box from GW a few weeks back.  I hope to use them as a heavily armoured assault squad or similar.  I will paint them in the same scheme as these guys.

I never picked up either of the earlier sets of Arbites sculpts, which I regret.  I would love to get them some day.

I forgot to include this goofy piece of terrain that I threw together a few weeks back.  I did a headswap on a Heroclix Judge.  I wasnt sure what to do with the leftover helmet but then I thought about the poster for a fan made short Dredd movie that has been doing the rounds and stuck this together:

The letters are scorched into ice pop sticks with a soldering iron.  The sign is based on this:

The paint job needs another highlight.  I will get around to it the next time that I am painting terrain.  A kinda fun little side reference that helps to plonk my post-apoc terrain in the Dredd-verse.

I was PM'ed about a color breakdown for the Judges. I decided that I might as well put it here it here in case anyone else wants to see it.

-------------------------------------------------------

All paints are thinned with water to varying degrees.  I used a black undercoat.

Blue (undersuits)
*Drybrush Necron Abyss
*Highlight undersuit GW Mordian Blue
*The Holocaust Suits got another small highlight of an unknown slightly brighter blue as they were supposed to be a solid material rather than leather/spandex.

Green
*GW Knarloc Green drybrush
*Wash with 50:50 water/Tamiya Clear Green mix.  GW Thraka Green would probably do the same thing. TCG is nice and vivid though.
*Highlight Warzone Scrub Green (its a bit like GW Camo Green I think)

Yellow
*GW Iyanden Darksun (two or three coats, thinned a bit but not too much or painting it saps my will to live)
*Wash left shoulder with the old ('80s) GW orange ink.  I dont know if Coat D'arms or anyone else currently make an equivalent or not.
*Layer with Model Color Flat Yellow (a couple of coats again)
*Layer/edge highlight MC Flat Yellow/white mix

Red
*GW Mechrite Red
*Highlight with a bright read
*Wash 1:1 Tamiya Clear Red/water mix

Gold
*Game Color Glorious Gold
*Wash with GW Gryphonne Sepia
*Wash with GW Devlan Mud
*Light drybrush/highlight with old GW Shining Gold

Silver
*Model Color Gunmetal Grey
*GW Devlan Mud
*Old GW Mithril highlight

Grey (SJS shoulder and MkI Lawgiver)
*Warzone Praetorian Grey (slightly darker than GW Codex Grey)
*Highlight GW Astronomican Grey
*GW Devlan Mud Wash

Black (helmet and MkII Lawgiver)
*Edge Highlight Warzone Praetorian Grey

The stripes on the belt buckle are GW Blood Red over a white field. The top bar is Model Color Magic Blue. The "stars" are just dots of white on the top blue bar

I gloss varnished the helmets after matt varnishing the figures.

-------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully that will be of use to someone :)

After a painting drought of several months I finally got back to painting over Xmas.

My painting slump kicked in while I was in the middle of painting my Dark Judges so these guys sat staring at me half finished on the painting table since September.  I did a quick job on the remaining areas in December in an effort to clear the decks.  So, for better or for worse here are Judges Death and Mortis.

(http://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/judgedeath2.jpg?w=179&h=300)  (http://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/judgemortis2.jpg?w=171&h=300)

Waffle about colour choices and some additional shots on my blog here (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2012/01/18/judge-death/)and here (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2012/01/11/judge-mortis/).

Comments and criticisms all welcome of course.

Thanks.  To be honest my painting standard has slipped over the period.  I still dont feel like I am back up to the level that I was at before (regardless of how good or bad that is).  Its frustrating.

I am glad that you liked it.  Although I have a lot of zeds painted, they have been done in various different ways over the last seventeen years or so, so the quality is up and down.  It is a fun exercise nonetheless.

Thanks.

Yep its the Heroclix Judge Fear up next.  I have it finished but it was (appropriately) a nightmare to complete.  Obscured detail, odd sculpting, big fat hands.  Judge Fear may have singlehandedly caused my painting drought as it was such a frustrating project.

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Nice.  Good variation in the treatment of the different types of dead flesh and bone.

Im glad that you liked it as I enjoyed trying to get the look to match my mental images of the Dark Judges.

Presumably due to printing processes, many of the images of Mortis that I had seen tended to colour the bone elements of his armour similarly to his head.

I didnt like that so I went with a smellier looking, somewhat necrotised greenish tint to the bone on his body (his head and his tail).  This followed through a bit to his fleshier parts, which are greener that those of Death and Fear (to follow later).

I figure that Mortis body is wet and stinking like a zombies while Death and Fears bodies are more dried out.

Again, thanks for the feedback :)

I got Fear and Fire finished.

(http://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/judgefire1.jpg?w=172&h=300) (http://sho3box.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/judgefear2.jpg?w=186&h=300)

Fear is a repainted, unstripped Heroclix so it caused me all sorts of problems to get it even to level its at now.  The low point of the Dark Judges for sure.

Fire took a couple of attempts as I never tried to paint anything like that before.  I am pleased with how he turned out.  The photos are a little over exposed.

The obligatory group shot.  "The crime isss life, the sentenccce isss death!" etc

More details on the Dark Judges on my blog (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/tag/dredd/) and the Dredd project so far here (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/tag/dredd/).

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Judge Fear looks very good next to the Foundry ones.

The 'clix and the later Foundry figures were sculpted by the same guy, Tim Prow.  I think that he got the Foundry gig because he had sculpted the 2000AD 'clix.

,iam still searching for 28mm Bear Traps for mine  ::)

lol  I hadnt thought of making up any traps for Fear, but now I want to do it.

I once saw some bear traps that a guy had made using pairs of the armoured jaw pieces from 40K ork miniatures (the Iron Gob bits).  They might be an easy option.

The sculpting style isnt my favourite either, thats for sure.  The range is grossly distorted in places although in the case of the Dark Judges that is less of a problem I think.  Anyway, with only a few sources of Dredd figures out there I cant afford to be too choosy really :)

Some of the new Mongoose Dredd figures are quite nice, much better than some of their earlier stuff or the Foundry figures.

Again, thanks for the feedback.

I think that there's a trap on one of the Warhammer plastic Ogre sprues.

Confirmed.  A quick Ebay search for "ogre trap" gave a few options.  It seems to be included as part of a number of the Ogre Kingdom sprues.  I just picked up a four traps and other accessories including shipping from the US for €6.50.

Thanks for the heads up :)

Thanks for the compliments guys.

...it was one of the better early dredd stories.

The original Minty strip is a six or seven page classic.  It was formative reading for me as a kid.

Next up for this project is likely to be a pair of Lawmasters and a pair of Cadet Judges.

Hotdog run in the Cursed Earth?

I would love to do that someday. I played a quick game of JDMG using some of my post apocalyptic terrain (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2011/11/09/judge-dredd-in-the-cursed-earth/) a while back and I would love to do the whole Hotdog run thing eventually.  The problem as I see it is that I dont see myself getting around to buying and painting up enough Lawmaster mounted Cadets.

I hope to get around to painting a handful of Lawmasters.  Depending on how Mongoose design the new Lawmaster miniatures it might be possible to have interchangeable riders.  That would make multiple Lawmaster Cadets a possibility.  It would be an evocative and fun scenario thats for sure.

The two Lawmasters that I currently have are Mongoose, but they are the OOP Gangs of Mega City 1 Lawmasters.  I managed to pick up a few from a fellow LAFer before Xmas, which I was very happy about.  They are slightly dodgy miniatures to be honest, but they will look fine with a bit of paint I suspect.

Mongoose have nw Lawmaster miniatures in the pipeline but no news on when they are due out yet as far as I know.  Apparently they rejected the first versions of them that they got at some stage last year, which is at least in part why such an iconic Dredd item is still unavailable.  Apparently the new versions will have alternate riders (Teks, SJS, Med etc).

I imagine that Mongoose will pump some extra resources into the Dredd stuff as the year progresses, with the new Karl Urban Dredd movie coming out in late September.  I am hoping to pick up a Manta at Salute.

Make sure to post pictures up when you get going on them.  I would love to see them.

Good point about the movie - it should, as you say, push Mongoose to amp up their Dredd releases a bit. And the plans for the Lawmasters sound great - Lawmasters with alternate riders (particularly if it means they can be swapped around) would be fantastic!

At the moment, I'm working on some of the old Citadel Judge Dredd minis - a sky-surfer, some muties, and an ape. The plan was for them to be my submission for the first round of the LPL, but since for different reasons it doesn't look like I'll be able to take part, I'll probably start a thread for my Dredd stuff, as long as I can figure out the photo thing. I've read a few of the threads here on the LAF about taking photos of minis, but I haven't managed to take any that were satisfactory - I'll renew my efforts, because I'd love to contribute something to the LAF, even though my painting is still hit and miss at times.

Oh, I read your most recent Judge Dredd Skirmish Game battle report on your blog - great stuff! Standard Falls is looking fantastic! And you're right about the Mongoose rules - they look like they probably work nice and smoothly.

So, its been two years since I painted any Dredd stuff.  I havent been idle and many of the projects that I worked on have direct uses in Dredd game, but still, it hasnt been Dredd stuff.

So with tomorrow being St Patricks Day I figured that I would start on some more Dredd figures with this national theme park law enforcer, Judge MacO'Conihoonihan.

I finished the figure last night, but only spotted that I had missed some of the highlighting on the boots after I had put up the blog post on the figure (http://sho3box.wordpress.com/2014/03/16/emerald-isle-judge/).  Ill get back to it.

Next up is the Mongoose/Warlord version of the Dark Judges, complete with spirit forms and man-traps.  Hopefully I should have them done over the next few weeks.  Hopefully... I have some other things to finish first.

I've had a couple of judges primed for a very long time, and I'm still contemplating whether to go four-colour blue on the suit, or paint it as black leather (like the movie)  lol

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Some more substantial updates to come reasonably soon with a bit of luck.

The uniform colours vary from artist to artist, none are objectively definitive.  Subjectively however... its all a matter of taste.  I like seeing blue in the scheme: it helps to give that four colour, comic book vibe.
