my first dabble in a twisted ECW pool...
painted my converted Witchhunter for my vaguely planned ECW Horror skirmish project... Witchfinder General meets Blood on Satans Claw meets Solomon Kane... details on the conversion are here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=25314.0)... quite happy with the blacks, tried for slightly different shades, boots have a hint of light brown from the black for a worn leather look, and the leatherwork is a very dark brown... I had planned black hair as well, but it needed a lighter colour to bring it all out a bit more... the angry shouty head has a nice crease in his brow, but now I look at it, it's all gone a bit Cromwell warty - which all things considered isn't a bad thing...
I didn't shade the white collar, just slapped on the brightest white I had just so it stood out more, the other bits of white have been shaded though...
-
Really nicely done - love the blacks! :-*
A stern looking character indeed.
Your project sounds very fun.
-
Well done indeed... it's taken me ages to get a half decent finish to our BUF which is all blacks on blacks - so refreshing to see someone get it right from the off. Well that's how it looks from here so don't go spoiling it. 8)
-
Very nice! I bought a couple of Warlord ECW sprues for the same purpose and I got them built and primed but I haven't done any painting on them. This fellow is very inspirational.
-
The figure is coming along nicely, the black is great. Thanks for sharing!
-
lol he's not coming anywhere anymore... tis done...
cheers all, blacks are just the Foundry triad with various levels of different wash to tint it... only the boots are black blended with brown...

excellent paint job, and an intriguing project!
-
Great stuff. Makes me think I should find the time to get on with my Three Musketeers meets Solomon Kane meets Brotherhood of the Wolf project I have collected a nice pile of lead and plastic for. ::)
-
Cracking. Silk purse from a sow's ear :)
-
Great stuff, really look forward to seeing more as the project progresses.
-
That's a great paint job - never been much good at shades of black!
Look forward to seeing more on this project.

The images aren't loading for me...

Sounds like a great game idea and and an even more amazing movie!

looks like someone else was thinking something similar... probably more productive than me at anyrate...
Witchfinder General: Days of Revelation is set during the period of the 17th Century leading up to the English Civil Wars.
Courageous Witchfinders battle against the many vile abominations that plague a once green and pleasant land. Clandestine vampire factions, aided by their loyal Guardsmen of Blind Obedience, secretly strive to gain ultimate power over a deceived nation. Cruel barguests create fear and mayhem across town and country. Evil witchcraft is rife; vicious werewolves savage the innocent and crazed noctelinger hunt in the shadows.
This exciting new wargame rule book contains 108 A4 sized pages of furious wargaming fun. The game is inspired by folklore, myth and the propaganda pamphlets produced by all sides involved in the English Civil Wars. Witchfinder General: Days of Revelation provides background and rules for using: Witchfinders; angry villagers; clubmen; pikemen; musketeers; dragoons; cavalry; vampires; werewolves; witches; noctelinger and barguests. Designed for use with 28mm scale figures.
Witchfinder General: Days of Revelation will be on sale for £15.00 plus P&P via this site from midnight on Halloween 2011.
Return to this site after the sun has set on 31/10/11, if you dare...

Thanks for sharing :D
Have to check it out

Nice job on that fellow. Blacks can be really tricky to do. I may have to pick up that Foundry triad. I have been using the Reaper dark elf skin triad, which is nice - but the Foundry one (judging from your pictures) does look different.
I paint a lot of figures in black... just a depressing guy, I guess.
-
I'll add this here as on her own she's not very swashbuckley...
another one for my vague Folk Horror project...
Angel from Blood on Satan's Claw
(https://i.imgur.com/Zrdq74a.jpg)
one of the sub-boob shadows looks a bit heavy handed there, so that'll get touched up... but quite happy with the skin tones
(https://i.imgur.com/NScS7lN.jpg)
not very happy with the crown of thorns (or hawthorn or whatever it is...), it was never going to be as fragile as in the film
(https://i.imgur.com/cD1c7WV.jpg)
but what looked ok when I was working on it (it's actually some 28mm scale barbwire), not so much now... has lost it's pronginess and pale grey wood I'd intended didn't really stand out very much against the pale hair and pale skin... am half considering some leaves to make it a bit more bramble-ish... not sure...
-
:o wonderful stuff again. Never admit to touching up boobs on your figs though lol
-
Gorgeous.
Love the idea of Folk Horror - it's a whole new genre! We demand a sub-board! ;) :D
-
And yet another mini added to my already impressive todo list :-*
Somehow naked 28mm chicks always get on that list ;D
-
Great painting on the figures :-* The subtle shading on the 'lady' in particular 8)
Might I suggest some brass etched foliage for the crown, you can get some very fine stuff that might work.
cheers
James
-
chris, thats stunning! :-*
-
Top work with the ladie skin tones. :-* :-* :-*
I do have that mini from hasslefree, but haven't painted her yet.
Thanks for sharing.

Seconded on both counts!
I'm really warming to the idea of this sort of thing and the examples here aren't helping. :-*

Oh yes. Nice prongs.
I'm getting Britt Ekland in The Wicker Man :)

Cracking PJ. The etched brass crown is a definate improvement on what was already a great miniature

I like that thread very much too, superb ideas and nice painting jobs.

"cheers all... working on 17th Centurying up some Mantic ghouls..."
We've been using Scots Covenanters as proxies.
-
have been slowly g/s stuff to get some ECW ghouls from the Warlord placcy stuff and the Mantic placcy Ghouls...
first off Mantic Ghouls with g/s puffy trousers and shredded Llewellyn-Bowen shirts, some of the orginal rags should make for decent enough shredded stockings...
a mix of Mantic and Warlord bits for a more recently departed (or more careful) ghoul... sadly, the Mantic stuff is a little too big for the Warlord plastics, but with the more action poses you can get away with the head and arms ok... I do have some more planned, but the pose means they may have to use the original Warlord head and I'll need to be a bit more creative... but I've g/s'd out at the moment...
and finally, the above, mixed in with some standard fantasy rag Mantic ghouls...

This is such a great thread. Totally inventive and what gaming should be about. :)
-
Coming along nicely. Eureka's Cannibal Cavalier might fit well as a leader.

Lookin' good :)

WOW! the ghouls are BRILLIANT! I'm really curious to see them painted! =)

Excellent work and putty pushing

So, is 17th Century horror the new trend of the day? There seem to be a few threads about it these days – pretty cool stuff.
Have you thought about the effects of the Plague...?

Not seen this, Lowtardog pointed it out to me. Very well done Chris.

Loving the conversions on those ghouls. The Mantic ghoul sprue really is endlessly useful... ;)

This is a great thread, really inspiring!
Can't wait for a painted ghoul!

I got inspired/distracted by a doc on over the weekend and am dabbling with some traditional Fairy types as well...
-
So, you used any of the zombie sprues with the warlord plastics yet, (seen the ghouls, very nice as I said).
-
haven't got any of the zombie sprues at the moment...
-
No? (Swop you for some ECW bits? :D)
-
I've only got single sprues from ebay and have plans with what I have...
while I think on it...
Coming along nicely. Eureka's Cannibal Cavalier might fit well as a leader.
what makes him a Cannibal? just the bone sacks...
will be getting some of the faerie swordsmen at some point, so may bung him in as well...

I have some of the Four A sea demons, was thinking of those as Firbolg ;D

gorgeous minis anevilgiraffe! :-*
really love your conversion, both ghouls and witchhunter. Really inspiring for my pike and shotte and zombies project! :)

Excellent work on those ghouls!
-
cheers, they do now have various stages of paint on them, but where the hell is December going?
-
I am really enjoying this thread, so full of inspirational stuff. I love your zombies, a great combination of good models, wich I have seen before, but yours are surely the best I have seen so far!

recently on Channel 4, there was a thing on called Gods and Monsters that covered the mythology and folklore of England... the frankly embarrassing to watch bits with Tony Robinson aside, it had some interesting nuggets of information covering fairies, plague and possession and one such nugget was the Munich Manual... a 15th Century grimoire written in Latin that covered Necromancy and Demonology... and none were more fluent in Latin than the Church...
bit of a quickie to be honest, had done the cassock black a while back, but was put off with yet another black and white figure for this project, so put it to one side... the Munich Manual gave this a nudge and then I saw a purple one on the Warlord forums and as that was still ecumencial enough for me and not black, I got motivated with this chap again...
the figure had a hefty integral base which I couldn't be bothered to file down, nor could I be bothered to cut the slotta and sink it down... as the devout trooper started me on the uneven moorland look, I thought that would work quite nicely here and I added a fallen gravestone to the base as something a bit different...
annoyingly the grass doesn't seem to work, did everything the same as the others in this range, but it doesn't look right to me... very annoying...
-

It's been threshed by the Devil's tail, of course it looks different!
So, now he's in purple, so he must be a bishop. That means he's a royalist. Not just "Wrong but Romantic", but also "Stylish but Satanic".
-

I really dont quite understand why companies sometimes do an integral base that is soooooo big it doubles or trebles the metal content of the figure! then complain metal prices are high?
Sometimes it works but mostly we like to base in our own style dont we?
-
He Evil how about a little update? I love this tread give us some more love!

and it's done... as much as I can do with it really... not 100% happy the thatch, had to avoid a too yellow/brown, so ended up using a Vallejo Green Grey and Green Ochre, I kind of like the finish, it has a dirty, old look, and as a first attempt at thatch, hey...

Great work on that building!
It really looks the business....
:-*
-
Looks really good - especially the thatch.
-
That looks great, I like the candle at the top of the ladder with the little smudge of smoke above it.
The thatch looks perfect, your towel thatch came out much neater and tidier than mine ever does!
-
A job VERY WELL DONE!
I really like the way you have concealed the "joint" of the tatched roof, by making the upper part follow the woodwork, but the tatch separation appearing lower.
Until I saw the exposed interior, I did believe it was a single piece. o_o
And the color turned out to be very effective too.
Thanks for sharing.
-
cheers all...

that is all down to the kit :)
-
finally got to painting these...
these are Mantic ghouls, with varying amounts of g/s to hide joins or just 17th century them up...
and then mix and match with Mantic bits added to Warlord plastic ECW figures... the female ghoul is converted from a Redoubt Enterprises ECW villager (with buckets on a yoke thing)...
others may have gone paler with the grey skin, but I like it... also not a huge fan of gore on a mini, so just purples and greens to give a slightly unpleasant tone to the grey/green...
large single shots on the blog if anyone is interested, but nothing you've not already seen really...
-
Wow lovely job! Especially the mix and mash bunch!
-
They look terrific, especially the converted villagers. The woman is very scary. Top stuff :)
-
Urgh, these actually look rather nasty and scary! Good job, and I do like your darker grey skin.
-
Blinking brilliant :-*
Love the one in a dress lol
-
Wow! Lovely zombie gentlemen!
-
cheers gents :D
-
Splendid! The female ghoul works particularly well.
-
Brilliant. You always astound me with your painting.
-
top stuff mate! :-*
they are lovely!
-
Those are lovely conversions with sweet paint jobs to boot.
They are the finest looking Mantic Ghouls I have seen. :-*
-
Angel Blake has her demon...
g/s added to a Strange Aeons fishman... and yes, it's a horseshoe bat - odd story about that really... I'd always assumed I'd just be adding the hood to the figure as that is how it's seen for most of the film, but I figured I rewatch the end and really have a good look at it's face... as the finale rolled, I got sketching what I was seeing and was very bemused as I'd never noticed it before...
and before anyone says it, it's not a vampire - there is no vampire folklore in England from that time as far as I'm aware and none will be appearing in my little world...
-
Love the demon. What a great idea for a conversion! :-*
I really am enjoying this thread. It oozes atmosphere!
-
:o :o :o
Bloody hell!
That was quick!
Great conversion, that looks amazing, and was the last thing I thought a Fishman would become.

that's why I was so chuffed to finally get hold of one... :D
-
That thread it's getting better and better! Like the dark pinting on the SA fishman, very effective.
-
Nice one Chris! That little bit of batty GS works really well, very nicely done indeed that strange eons figure isn't the best sculpted but your additions and the subtle leathery paintjob really pull it off well.
Question: any reason why you went for the same mantic head for all of them? Looks ok, but would have thought you'd have gone for some more variety there?
-
yep... it's the better head in my mind and it's also the smaller of the three heads and fits better with the Warlord plastics as they are a little smaller than the Mantic plastics...
-
Loving the Ghouls!! :o cracking painting and great wee project!
-
yep... it's the better head in my mind and it's also the smaller of the three heads and fits better with the Warlord plastics as they are a little smaller than the Mantic plastics...
Got you yeah they do look a little smaller. You could GS some hair on them? Hats from the warlord range? Just break the 'cloning' feel. :?
Really like the one on the right of the female Ghoul, has a really 'sneaking up on scooby' look to him.
Good stuff.
-
The villagers are a great idea with great execution :-* :-*
cheers
James

I did consider both - test hair didn't work (even tried a curly cavalier wig) and I couldn't see how they'd keep a hat when they can't keep on their shoes...
-
Great Thread and an awesome idea. The Ghouls are really scary.
Thank you

I love those figures and while I agree they make great vampires (they would be perfect warhammer Von Carsteins, better than the official models) they are very large and will look way too big next to the warlord games figures. They are at least 32mm tall.
-
there is no vampire folklore in England from that time
-
Just caught up. Stonking. I do love a Giraffey PJ.

Some British Folktales
There are a number of British folktales recorded by medieval chroniclers (recorded as factual at the time), which have a very vampiric flavour. William of Newburgh, a monk and chronicler who wrote in the twelfth century, describes an incident in the county of Buckinghamshire, where a recently deceased man returned from beyond the grave. He came in the form of a spectre appearing before his widow and other relatives; to combat this they stayed up during the night and made noises to frighten him away. This only made matters worse, as he began walk in the daylight hours. The Bishop of Lincoln became involved, and seeking advice on how to stop it was told that the body of the man would have to be burned. The bishop ordered the body to be exhumed, whereupon it was found to be as fresh as the day he had been buried. After the body had been cremated the haunting ceased.
Not the whole blood sucky thing, which came into England around 1732, but maybe the beginnings. hope you'll also have boggarts and banshees to boot!
-
Not the whole blood sucky thing, which came into England around 1732,
exactly... in the form of a spectre... a few return from the grave tales, but nothing that smacks of vampire... best you could hope for is revenant...
strictly speaking my ghouls are pushing it a bit, but there are plenty of things that would work... banshees are worth pursuing... and I'm going to be getting some bits from Eureka on Saturday... :D
-
and I'm going to be getting some bits from Eureka on Saturday... :D

Banshees and spectres definately, marsh dwellers too, (deep ones or slightly shallower ones at a push)
Good stuff I'll be having a nose at Eureka at some stage as well, amongst other things! ;)
-
And he said he couldn't afford to go... :)
I got peer pressured... and it would be silly to go and not buy stuff...

Just say no Chris! :D

A late arrival to the party I know but those Mantic ghoul conversions came out really well. 8)

Ditto the Walter Map example from the 13th century. Montague Summers, the well known fake Roman Catholic priest, who compiled the books on vampires which novelists and screenwriters have plundered ever since, shoehorned all sorts of revenants, werewolves and others into his "vampire" category, which has confused things.
-
You cant leave out faerie folk, Pixies, imps, piskies, brownies et al ;D

yep... quite a few English revenants, they tend to harrass people known to them...

some shockingly poor photos, but it's a gloomy day today... conversion of the Warlord ECW command sprue musician (again oddly - strange that I find that the most workable of the 3) to be in charge of the hunting dogs that any witch hunt needs...

I haven't decided on a head yet, but will be adding several heads to my head bag this weekend at Salute... I tried to replicate the pose from the Warlord Ancient Briton pack handler, so cut off one leg and repositioned it and it's ankle... little bit of g/s to move hands, arms and what have you...
of course, it does occur to me that I may now need to do one without the dog, so will need another command sprue... sigh...
-
No "Legend of the Headless Houndsman", then?
Coming along very nicely - you can feel the straining of the dogs and their handler in the poses.
-
Nicely done.
-
Superb! :-*
-

Yep, that sums it up, great conversion work ;D
-
Superb! :-*
ditto! :-*
-
Great ideas and conversions!
:-*
-
Assuming it's a drummer? Works well as a handler definately.
Nice!
And it's pronounced 'hinds'
;)
-
Nice work!
You can feel the movement.
(if you get my gist!)
-
That is a great conversion, as others have said, you can see the strain that huge dog is putting on the chain in the handler's pose!
Who makes the dogs?
-
ditto! :-*
Ditto x 2 :D
-
Who makes the dogs?
they are by Warlord...
Salute was very Folk Horror friendly... :D
-
Wow lovely stuff!
-
a bit of silliness really, but I had the armoured pikeman on the sprue and was wondering what I could do with him... historically, witches of course would be swam, this entailed more than just chucking them in the river as you needed to get them out again so the witches were usually tied by rope to men on either bank or in boats... if they floated, they would be hauled out and prosecuted for witchcraft - which would I assume depend on how much slack the swimmers on either bank gave the rope... anyway, with this image in my noggin, I fancied trying something different with some wire I have kicking about and figured that in a gaming situation, the swimmer would need to catch the witch in the first place... the fact that he's wearing plate armour so he can get close to the target just screamed do it... so there you go, no idea if he'll get finished or even have a practical role in a game, but he's there...

the Maypole itself is one of my Woodland Scenics trees which I decided to sacrifce as finding a straight and sturdy twig was not going well... I had tried several different ways of doing ribbons... then I discovered something very strange...
they didn't have ribbons - they are a Victorian invention, as are most of the dances, and even more oddly, an invention attributed to John Ruskin, the reknowned artist (and alleged paedo) that my former university and current employer is actually named after... turns out he thought it was good healthy fun and when he was training teachers, he taught them the dances and they went to schools all over the country and took it with them - so that really annoying attempt at synchronised dancing in primary school is his fault... on the plus side I didn't need to worry about bloody ribbons...
-
The talent in this thread is incredible. Looks great!
-
Just caught up with this thread for the first time in an age... I've missed so much! :o
I love the ghouls – very period – as well as the demon (although I think I might have painted a bit more of a contrast between the black skin and black robe). Looking forward to seeing the dogs and lasso witch-catcher – do please finish him!
The other day I happened to hear of Clockwork & Chivalry (http://www.clockworkandchivalry.co.uk/clockwork-chivalry/), a 17th century Civil War RPG. The clockwork New Model Army idea doesn't do it for me at all to be honest, but there seems to be magic in there as well, so some of the background might be interesting. There's a 40-page free sampler PDF on their site at any rate.
Shame to lose the ribbons on the May pole though! lol
-
well the dog handler has a head - just needs paint... and although I may or may not go the whole hog with a Morris troop, I'm currently sculpting something to go with the May Pole... ;)
-
Glad this project is going well, in my lunch hour today I went into the little local free museum and the witches and superstitions of Devon section caught my eye. You thought about including the wild hunt in your witchhunter background, the black huntsman and his whist hounds, (typical black hell hounds you find stories of across the country)
http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/dark_huntsman.htm (http://www.legendarydartmoor.co.uk/dark_huntsman.htm)

Be right for your period too?
See what you reckon.

THese figures match that beatie ideally I have 3 for horror games

Nice mutts.
Huntsman should be on horseback, maybe one of the headless horseman minis with a perry head? Add some spectral mist (a la greenstuff) to the horse's mane, tail, legs etc... maybe a spectre or two too.

The last lot got converted into zombie dog pack, tails snipped off so they all look like dobermans and the addition of the Obelisk doberman make a nice fast zombie pack ;D
-
the hunt is in my bumper book of British folklore I think - but yep, should be very workable... doubt I'll go for mounted though as I'm looking at a small skirmish area... could use the original pack master of the mastiffs with some work...
have also been thinking about the Wild Wargs for hellhounds... plastic so I can tinker nicely and suitably undoglike...
have started painting my converted hound master, but having trouble with a decent colour for his clothes - want to avoid a uniform look, so don't want black or buff, but my dull greens so far aren't really working... I think there isn't enough fabric on show to work properly, it's all straps and belts and creases so the colour isn't working...
also desperately waiting for a horses skull so I can finish my May Pole sculpt... a small order from Redoubt should help there as well...
-
I havent followed your thread on Frothers but wouldnt an Ebob horse do the business?
http://www.ebobminiatures.com/products/fantasy.htm#
-
it would if they were in stock... lol
-
it would if they were in stock... lol
::) thats a bugger :?
-
I've got hold of a GW horse skull, but it's just too massive... Ebob's stuff is usually in a more historical scale rather than heroic GW stuff, so should be perfect - I just need to source one... >:(
-
Anyway the Wilde Jagd / Chasse Gallery / Mesnie Hellequin is traditionally flying (for some reason scholars tend to associate it -Wutendes Heer - with dim memories of Odin and Sleipnir?), so would require a tabletennis table!
Its last incarnation being the 'Ghost Riders In The Sky'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHo6ug6yAmw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHo6ug6yAmw)
(In some versions meeting the Hunt can be beneficial - but certainly not to witchhunters lol)
But the 'ground' hunt of the Dark Hunter on foot is indeed also known, generally associated to a local character of old, rather Baskerville-fashion.

How about a deep dark red (like a bloody leather red?) Might work?

well this may as well go in this thread as the threads that inspired it are already in the workbench...
for a while now I'd had 4 2ft square foam terrain boards for a nice 4x4ft playing area... sadly following several downsize house moves, I no longer had the space other than the floor - however good luck finding a level surface with these floorboards, the square tiles tended to follow their own inclination... so I flogged them and bought what appears to have been one of the last Mat-o-War green mats going.... only at 6x4ft it was more than I'd ever need... cue another moment of inspiration from Silent Invader...
an accident with the UHU meant I had some stains to cover up (glue honest), so with some scenic spray cement I added some static grass - with a very dodgy nozzle, this was more random than I planned and so there is more on there than needed, but it helps give some more colour and texture to the grass and helps match up with the terrain I have...
so, there it is... a handy skirmish board, a little under 3x2 feet that can sit nicely and flat either on the floor or on my small painting table (when it's clear) and can be stored upright (hence keeping the metal surround)... it should be big enough for the small games I have in mind for either Folk Horror or Doctor Who, although some distances may need to be shortened... I just need to finish more scenery - the three river bank sections fit nicely along the long side and by removing the dock area, the two sections fit on the short side... I have some dirt tracks in mind (again nicked from Silent Invader) and this has led me to think about a bridge section as well... we'll see...
oh, and I kept the cork board on the other side - I plan to use that for urban/industrial terrain...
-
I really love this project. :-*
Great board idea. I might borrow (steal) it. lol
2 by 3 is a great size for a dark, foggy, Witchhunter game.
-
yep... just need to finish more scenery lol
-
Am looking forward to some game reports! ;D
-
Ah this is where you've been hiding your thread Chris! Just had a jolly good read, it's really brilliant to see someone striding out on a different path to everyone else with such an inspiring project, bravo!
-
silly ECW boot question.... I take it the weird leather buckle thing on most of the boots you see was for the stirrups... so no stirrups, no weird buckle thing?
-
silly ECW boot question.... I take it the weird leather buckle thing on most of the boots you see was for the stirrups... so no stirrups, no weird buckle thing?
Ithink it may have also been a fashion thing so wouldnt worry too much
-
Yep. Stirrup guard to stop your bucket top boot getting chafed ;)
-
fair enough... something with the houndsman wasn't working so I've given him boots... which considering that left him hanging from the dog by a brittle stiffened chain was quite scary... ;D
-
right, my cat-sitting stint is over, so I can get back home and hopefully get some more stuff on here... the time has been spent well though, going over the Malleus Maleficarum and picking out which bits of witchcraft have gaming applications... http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=42832.0
this has got me thinking about rules... the effectiveness of magic was generally linked to piety, so the more pious someone was, the harder it was to effect them with magic (or get demons to effect them), and I was wondering about having a piety stat that could go up and down.... as the pious trooper witnesses horrible things his piety goes down which means he's an easier target... preachers, prayer or relics could give increases... so it's kind of a morale check I guess...
I don't know if I'm over complicating things, but I'd really like to capture something of the period that Witchfinder General didn't really get... but it also means that maybe Fear and Faith is going to be too simple...
so - what ECW suitable rulesets would you recommend for skirmish games and ease or modding for house rules? Pike and Shot any good? or Pike and Shot and Zombies? I thought perhaps Strange Aeons might be worth a look as I assume it has some kind of Insanity system which could be proxied to my thoughts on Piety.... or even Mordheim... really not sure...
any thoughts?
-
This is a marvellous thread, and although it may take your time from some important things (as producing dr who stuff), it's lovely :-*

Have you considered Savage Worlds "Showdown" - a free miniatures ruleset, possibly coupled with their Solomon Kane campaign guide?
http://www.peginc.com/shop/savage-worlds-showdown/
http://www.peginc.com/games/the-savage-world-of-solomon-kane/
I have never played myself but it may be just the thing you want, with a horror statistic, spells and adaptability.
BTW - love the project, especially the Witchhunter himself.
-
Don't really know what sort of ECW skirmish rules are out there but having some sort of token/s on the tabletop to represent pious devotion would be a good idea. Although it might be better to have it secretly recorded by a GM (if you intend on having one for the game).
cheers
James

a review of Gloire seems promising... and adaptable maybe.... hmmmm...
http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/13/13370.phtml
-
I'd hit up "Dr. The Viking", he really seems to be enjoying the Gloire rules. :)
-
First thing I thought about when you said piety checks Chris was the old SAN rolls in CofC, seems to offer the same end result, but with clearer and more immediate impact on combat/morale/engaging the servants of the dark arts etc... using negative modifiers.
It would definately work. Be good to see the accumulative effects of piety 'fails' (enes of horror/visitations/manifestions from the pit) impact on characters and subsequently the others in the warband/hunting party etc...
-
Havent got F&F to hand but could it be built into the fear tests or whatever (insanity?) as means of reducing the faith, a dropping modifier etc

that's why I thought Strange Aeons may be useful...

yeah, that was my initial thought, but then I thought it might be good to have a variable figure, rising and falling... maybe too much paper work in a game though... but the thought was, the witchs/demons could really work ona high level pious character and tempt him/make him question his faith sort of thing so he would then be susceptable to more agressive magics...
(wow - 8000 reads!)

I think it should be something that both sides can see... a demon would know if someone is protected or having doubts... so, what ways are available to show this on the table? never really done table tokens in a game before... want something more interesting than a scrap of paper...
are there such things as markers or tabs for slotta bases? kind of a backward engineered clix base?
-
For my witch hunt game this winter I used cats (from Reaper's Crazy Edna)to mark the witch's power. For the heros there were tiny plastic dove flocks from a wedding cake and black construction paper angels used as shadows.
Still markers on the board but not as jarring.
-
right... Impact Miniatures do skill rings for not Blood Bowl...
http://www.impactminiatures.com/index.php?option=skillrings
they could work - I'm thinking of 3 levels of piety, keeping it simple could swing me back to Fear and Faith as this would work as part of the fear test easily enough...
devout - white skill ring - mainly witchhunting party, a defence bonus against magic
decent - white translucent ring - not sure on the term decent though, I just like the idea of 3 D's - just your average church going villager would be here, normal defence against magic
damned - no ring - not necessarily evil, but certainly open to corruption/possesion and a defence penalty against magic
have it linked to either the fear test or a morale test somehow, fail a test, and they go down a level, certain figures like preachers could have a radius bonus skill on the test to keep people faithful... bit sketchy at the moment, but should be easy to insert into whatever rules I go with...
-

You could use the casualty markers that warbases produce http://www.warbases.co.uk/#/accessories/4533097200

ok, back to the candy...
after finally sourcing the horse skull I needed, I could finish sculpting my mast beast - essentially a variant of the more familiar hobby horse in Morris Dancing...
g/s over a eBob dolly, with an eBob horses skull (GW ones were toooo big by half) and out of sheer laziness, a Warlord plastic ECW foot (actually the foot from the witchhunter himself once he had new boots)... I made the cloth over the body a bit more clingy than it probably would be to emphasise the head and arms of the man inside just incase anyone gets confused and has recently watched Time Bandits...
in the main, I'm very happy with it, there are probably issues with the drapery and movement, and I need to touch up a couple of spots, but it kind of evolved on me from a standing beast to one in the middle of a kind of winding ducking dance... if that makes sense...

Excellent.
I've spent a fair bit of time inside one of those :)
-
I'll take that as an expert opinion then lol
-
Oss! Oss!
Splendidly creepy.

Fantastic, would love to see this cast up so I can get one :)
Ben
-
Very cool. I love the mast beast. Very thematic and creepy.
-
I love this thread. You've got some very atmospheric miniatures, anevilgiraffe.
-
cheers all....
I've a couple of weeks off work now, so hopefully can get quite a bit done... just sorted out the thatch on another building and have two chaps mid paint plus dogs... lol
-
That's a cracker of a sculpt. :D
So much good stuff coming out of this project. :)
-
Love the mini - creepy indeed.
decent - white translucent ring - not sure on the term decent though, I just like the idea of 3 D's - just your average church going villager would be here, normal defence against magic
What about "doctrinal" instead of decent?
-
Nice sculpt - had not heard of this 'creature' until now. 8)
I've spent a fair bit of time inside one of those :)
Why am I not surprised?! :D
-
Love the mini - creepy indeed.
What about "doctrinal" instead of decent?
well I was going with lines like decent Christian burial and that... day to day folk, go to church, get in the harvest, say their prayers types, but still willing to visit the local cunning woman for a cure.... doctrinal sounds very much like a complete and utter believer, no doubts at all...
-
cheers again... have been offline for the last couple of days due to a virus, using a friends at the moment... on the plus side have all but finished another building... pics as soon as I can run the fix from my usb....
-
Cool sculpt!! 8)
-
as soon as I can run the fix from my usb....
and that fix removed the virus but killed something as I no longer have a task bar or internet explorer access... thank god firefox was lurking... pics will wait til I trust my system... lol
-
now then gents... just finishing the basing on the hounds and they'll be up shortly, in the meantime, something of a poll...
Hellhounds... what flavour?
along with the standard Barguest/Black Shuck/Grim large black hound there are...
The Devil's Dandy Dogs
Demon dogs of the wild hunt from Cornwall, they are seen as the most dangerous because they hunt for human souls. The Dandy dogs breathe fire, and leave trails of blackened grass behind them.
Gabriel Hounds
A Lancashire term for packs of spirit hounds from the wild hunt, who rode across the skies making eerie howls. They where said to have human faces.
Herla's Hounds
Phantom dogs of the wild hunt, they are white with red ears, the colour of traditional otherworld creatures.
Skriker
A Yorkshire and Lancashire version of the phantom black dog, it was large with saucer eyes.
Wisht Hounds
The Dartmoor phantom dogs of the wild hunt. They were often described as headless.
now I think I'll do at least one Skriker, as it just sounds fun... but am very tempted by the Gabriel Hounds...
-
Gabriel hounds would be cool, but they would require some conversion work on your part.
Herla's Hounds sounds like a really neat color scheme. :D
-
a Salute purchase, actually one of the prepainted kits that I bought on a whim... just dressed up again with balsa for the timbers, tried liquid g/s stippled for the render which worked ok, not 100% happy with the thatch though

I wanted a generally dirty, grotty look to it all, the plague cross just seemed like a good idea...

finally got round to finishing the houndmaster and his pack for my Folk Horror project.... bit shiny still, so needs some more dullcote, everything that's wrong with it is otherwise explained on my blog (i kept faffing about and changing bits)...

Brotherhood of the Capelthwaite... a Mohican ally for my Witchhunters...

Conquest Mini's Magua with a musket swap (the original was bent beyond help)... I've loved this mini for years and finally picked one up a few months ago and in the best tradition of stealing (partly what was said here - but mainly from the film Brotherhood of the Wolf) and not a million miles away from my original Solomon Kane inspiration, I decided that a strange and dark-skinned companion would not go amiss... no doubt converted by some zealous missionary and brought back to amuse the King, he's now found a higher purpose...
oh... and a capelthwaite is a large shape-shifting black hound from Westmorland if you were wondering... and yes, I have plans...
-
:o :o :o
Great update!
That house looks amazing with the 'home improvements', lovely tip about the toothbrush bristles.
Consider that idea stolen!
;)
Those puppies look fantastic, too, and the Master has come out top notch.
:-*
And then you go and add a Mohican as I am typing.
Sterling work all round.
You have been busy!
-
My, you've been busy! :D
Love the tooth brush bristle idea! The building looks wonderful. :-*
The hounds looks great. I love the colors. :-*
Finally,
(http://homepage.ntlworld.com/roweller/witchhunter/IMG_1925.JPG)
WTF?
Actually, cool idea. I just wasn't expecting you to go that direction.
He looks great. :-*
-
Very cool 8)
That liquid green stuff render seems to work very well, I might have to give it a go.
The dogs are my favourite, the painting of them is great :-*
cheers
James
-
Brill! Nice work!
-
Brilliant. I love those figures, and I really like the house as well. It's got that certain atmosphere.
-
This project is fantastic. The interior detailing on that building is superb, as is everything else actually!
I don't know how pertinent this is, but seeing as you're using Blood on Satan's Claw as partial inspiration have you seen Cry of the Banshee (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cry-of-the-Banshee-DVD/dp/B001KWHOF6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342603866&sr=8-1)? It's a great little film starring Mr Vince P. and kind of occupies a niche between Blood... and Witchfinder General. There's plenty of tits, too, which I always think of as a bonus. A typically irreverent review on British Horror Films may be read HERE (http://www.britishhorrorfilms.co.uk/crybanshee.shtml).
Keep up the great work.
-
never heard of it, but by god that's gone to the top of my lovefilm list... :D
-
as Ian has announced it over on Frothers... the Mast Beast will be entering production and be available from Fenris Games...
it has a new all g/s foot now though...
-
not much to show on this so far, but it's a start and is probably the best chance to show the chimney off as I doubt it will be very visible once the building goes up...
the forge is from Ainsty (and comes with the bellows), the anvil was very nicely donated by a Frother... the chimney is blue insulation foam, brickwork carved on, then liquid g/s to have crisp up the edges a bit and to toughen up the foam...
am really torn on which design to go with the building itself, have been checking out various ones on the market... but it should match the 4ground buildings when I'm done...
-
and the WIP of the Black Dog...
need to redo the bottom lip, still undecided on what to do with the tail and intend on doing up the feet as well... should double up as the various kinds of Black Dog recorded, will just be a stat change... phantom hounds tend to fall into two types, lone dogs, which this will be, or packs which I am thinking on at the moment...
it's a GW Wild Warg, with a lot of greenstuff...
-
Nice brickwork! :-*
The black dog looks very creepy. It's got a bat like look to it that I like.
Personally, Id leave it as is and paint the feller up. But then again, you are the artiste.
When are you going to start your wickerman? ;D
-
very productive couple of days... quite surprised actually, I'm such a good procrastinator...
anyway, the basic build of the blacksmiths is done...
foampvc with bits of plasticard in spots and dressed with balsa, need to do the render, and add woodgrain texture to the supports and beams of the forge area which are plastic girder and foampvc for strength (balsa would have been a non-starter)...
not sure what to do with the chimney, will probably do a couple of extra layers of brick on the chimney so it has a hole as it were... the forge pieces aren't attached yet, I need to texture and paint the main building first, the base is made from thin plasticard layered to a decent thickness and to allow the forge and bellows to sit in cutaways designed for them... it's reasonably sturdy now, and should be quite solid when finished...
the building is based on the 4ground buildings (obviously), so the room has the same footprint and it will take the same windows... learnt a bit as I was going, and had to add a wee bit to the side walls as I hadn't allowed for the gap once the roof was added... but it's been a fun job - although the roof was a complete pig, I've got it good now, but it was a bit disconcerting... the roof alone is making me rethink my plan for the pub...
-
Love this project.
-
Love this project.
Seconded, its a gem ;D
-
Great Stuff,like it. :o
-
Yes indeed! I'm following this project with great interest. I particularly love what you did with the ghouls, the bat-faced demon, and the houndmaster; just such great imaginative work.
-
Looking good! Can't wait to see it painted.
-
Cool! Nice work!
-
Love that building :-* :-* :-*
-
Missed a couple of updates here, but it is good to see so much at once.
Great additions, and that Blacksmith's is lovely.
I must steal that idea when I return to Mordheim....
-
cheers guys... anyone know of a suitable period Blacksmith figure? I know Redoubt have that horseshoeing set, but currently thinking of using Big Gareth from the Warlord Clubmen...
have removed the raised sections from the forge supports and added them to the roof now, have also removed the hefty braces on the eaves sections that kept the roof in place - now the main building has the raised walls on the sides they actually stop any movement so those braces are unnecessary...

I have a different set from foundry
I'll try and get you a picture.
Couldn't find them on the foundry site but I only got them recently.
So I took a picture of mine

I think he is the boss, sleeping :D

is that bloke at the back in labour?
lol lol

as Ian has announced it over on Frothers... the Mast Beast will be entering production and be available from Fenris Games...
it has a new all g/s foot now though...
Up in the webshop from today 8)
-
:D
can't wait to see the master... it has a new foot honestly...
-
Missed this thread as on hols.....brill work Chris.
-
Ooh, I'll have to place an order for this. 8)
-
mine arrived yesterday, they look lovely... will hopefully get them painted over the weekend...
-
These rules have been recommended to me. One does one buy said rules?
Cheers fellas
James
-
there are no rules... yet... unless you mean Witchfinder General, which sadly I can't recommend to anyone...
-
painted the Black Dog... not 100% happy with it to be honest, the eyes work quite well, but the paintjob as a whole isn't winning me over, but I figure I better step away from it... and annoyingly it's still shiny, after several coats of dullcote...
I did resculpt the muzzle from the WIP shot though, the nose is narrower, but the snout is slightly shorter and taller, makes it a bit less wolf-life hopefully...
and for size comparison...

and the Mast Beast is painted... happy with this one, painted two at once - the one of the d/s base will be destined for the Fenris display case and webstore...

Lovely. I'm so getting 'The Wicker Man' from this... :)
-
ok... nothing new yet (got distracted after I finally got the blacksmiths thatch looking ok)...
but, last night on 5 (UK) was The King's War on Witches, about James I and his book Daemonologie... is available on demand now
http://www.channel5.com/shows/revealed/episodes/the-kings-war-on-witches-revealed
it was quite good - very interesting bit on the Saveock pits...
http://www.archaeologyonline.org/Site%20-%20Area%20Feather%20Pits.html
the earliest is dated to the mid 1600's, but there are 30 odd and the latest contained plastic and bailing string from the 1970's which - depending on their function - is either great or bonkers or scary...
-
Funny you should mention that C5 program, as the first time that I saw it in the TV listings I thought of this thread....
-
ok... this is really for anyone following/copying what I've been doing and buying the window packs from 4ground... the blacksmiths has been a bit of a slow slog, the thatch really annoyed me so I kind of stepped away for a bit and got distracted with some tents I started a while back and did some pressmolding and stuff...
anyhoo, back on with the blacksmiths and painting is all but done (getting the compacted dirt floor right was a pain), which is when I fit the windows... now I bought the market hall windows pack as it had more windows in it than the cottage windows pack so better value I figured... sadly, the market hall windows are a different fricking shape to the cottage and of course I used the cottage as the basis for the frames in the blacksmith... so they won't fit...
my fault I guess (not sure if it's on the 4ground site) but there you go, I'll find a use for them, but now need to order a new set of windows before I can get finished with it... sigh...
September is looking like a dry month for updates, but I have been doing stuff, just not finishing...
-
This thread is totally awesome and very inspiring work 8)
-
it only just fits in the lightbox, so photos may not be the best, but, for better or worse, my scratchbuilt Blacksmiths is finished...

It is of course an absolute swine to get a good photo of the inside, but hopefully this covers it. The forge floor was a conundrum at first, I didn't want wood, and stone seemed a bit too posh, so, after a pleasing result in the plague house, went for a compacted dirt/clay floor within a brick frame... didn't quite get the same result as the plague house, but it will do... I added a few clumps of grass where the floor could have cracked and seeds taken a foothold... strange fisheye thing happening with the photo, it is straight... honest...
and of course, the Smithy himself... rather than track down a blacksmith mini, I decided to go with stuff I already have (a sign of things to come I feel), and this chap is from the Warlord Clubmen set... as a cleaver was included in the weapons options for the set, I had always seen him as a butcher, but a g/s hammer and a brown leather apron and a perfectly compact and rotund blacksmith will do...

quite a cracking sculpt actually... great face...
-
Good stuff. The smithy looks very gaming-friendly. But is the blacksmith barefoot? That's a bit risky in a forge!
-
He looks like he's shouting off some horseshoe-stealing blighters. "'Ere you kids, gerroffat!". lol
-
Really nice finish!
An excellent build that not only looks good but gives full gaming accessibilty.
Top drawer workmanship!
:-*
-
Lovely work. The finished model is very impressive.
Couldn't have come at a better time. I just watched the Witchfinder General and the Twins of Evil these weekend.
-
But is the blacksmith barefoot? That's a bit risky in a forge!
...And a thatched roof's a bit risky in a forge! All those sparks.
-
You really are an evil giraffe! :o
Evil Knievel of painting!
-
Brilliant :-*
-
:-*
Really nice work with great details.
A simply splendid piece of terrain!
-
Lovely finish!!!
-
Love it, AEG! :-*
And dislike it for a good reason :'(
-
Another great addition to this project!
-
Just read this in one hit. Great stuff & a great concept. The article on the feather pits you linked was very interesting. There used to be a small wooded hill near me which was the alleged site of a regular witches' gathering. They were apparently caught and hung there. I've heard of similar sites elsewhere. It could make a nice terrain feature?
-
That is a cracking build and paint job :-* :-* :-*
-
Late to the party as usual- but I have to say I love your stuff- I can't wait to see more.
-
Images not there or loading for me either...

Stunning ... a joy to follow, sir!

I had to make an order up from 4ground, otherwise the postage would have been more than the order, so I went for this strong box cart...
quick pj really, nice easy kit to assemble - really recommend it... only minor tarting up required....
now this is something of an experiment - seeing if it works really for the members of Angel's coven or the mad mummers...
I did go a bit Wicker Man at first, with a panto hump and a jesters hat, but a) it didn't look quite right and b) it's a Redoubt figure and was tall enough, with the hat I couldn't even see him getting inside any buildings... but overall I like the basic idea and will be doing more randomly to pagan them up a bit...
-
Nice work on the cart.
Minimal tarting, you say?
One to remember, if thats the case.
Like the conversion on the mummer.
Obviously that was the influence on the Cawdor gangers in Necromunda.
Nice putty pushing.
:-*
-
The cart looks lovely painted! It's hard to believe its mdf! :o
The masked dude reminded me of the Hammer Classic "A Plague of Zombies".
-
cheers...
yep - the cart was just tarted with some card (cut from those business cards ebayers pop in with your order - very handy them) for the more pronounced struts and some thin plastic rod to make the hinges instead of being recessed...
-
That cart looks brilliant.
I am sceptical about your 'minimal tarting' though - surely the raw product can't be that good looking ;)
-
;) drybrushed up lovely though
-
£4 from the Square at Salute, does the job quite nicely...

couple more pics on the blog along with some blurb... but hey, it's a stone circle... what can you say...
-
Nifty. Very Merry Maidens.
-
Nicely done.
Works for me.
-
A great piece, AEG! :)
Damn, I really need to find the time with the pacific board :/
-
arrgh... picked up Once Upon A Time In The West County, but the entire book has been misprinted and the print margins are smaller than the text margins on every odd numbered page... I know it's a small press item, but I at least expect a complete book, not 99% of it and a guess at the missing words...
so much for working on rules while I look after a friends cats... waiting to hear back from Caliver...
-
It looks great, I like the flowers!

You might be waiting a while............

What miniature is that in the circle?
That's An Evil Giraffe's own creation now sold by Fenris games as a mast beast. Very nice, isn't it!

page 12 of this very thread for the green and page 15 for the painted version

You might be waiting a while............
actually, did hear back quite quickly, another copy is enroute

:o

well hasn't arrived yet lol

The full movie of Blood on Satans claw is on youtube if anybody wants a look... :o

Excellent thread and some great modelling. I have so got to get the Horse figure for my Morris men, in Welsh it is called the Mari Lwyd.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mari_Lwyd
Love the idea of all of this and like the idea of keeping it to folk lore stories.
Keep it going.
-
ok... have the urge to build/make something, but in the absence of the 4ground stairs not yet being available on their own, doing my remaining buildings isn't on the cards...
have done some caulk dirt tracks last night (ala Silent Invader - will see how that works out), but itching for something else... the barn is an option, was mulling over a plague pit... but the majority of the month spent looking after a friends cats has kind of derailed me... any thoughts? what am I lacking?
-
You were thinking of doing a Witch's hovel at some point, I believe...
-
What about a non consecrated graveyard for the unholy? (i.e. those considered unworthy of a 'good christain burial).
A hermit's cave?
-
You were thinking of doing a Witch's hovel at some point, I believe...
yes... in the mean time I was planning on using the medieval hovel, but would like one of those resin jobs... but this isn't about spending money dammit! I also have plans/bits for a churchyard, but need to buy the warbases church first.
-
You need:
A disconcerting chalk figure on a hillside... A pagan white horse or phallic giant
A gnarly sacred grove: a patch of primary oak woodland festooned with ribbons, animal skulls, trinkets and offerings
A small toll-house to sit beside your roadway, where Ezekial Sponge, the ancient tollkeeper lives. Sometimes he only claims a groat from travellers. Sometimes he takes their souls...
Any good? :)

They ALL sound pretty good to me!
I might steal some of those ideas for my British Strange Aeons project!
:D
-
A gnarly sacred grove: a patch of primary oak woodland festooned with ribbons, animal skulls, trinkets and offerings
Actually reminds me of when I had my sojourn into forestry. A visit to some woods near Brentwood, Essex and a strange pair of trees with inter-twisted boughs - I recall them as being like two hands grasped together (but I might just be getting carried away with myself). The story was that the local coven thought the trees to have special powers and at certain times of the year would gather under them for 'special times'......
-
Yeah, there's a very famous grove at Sancreed in Cornwall, in the woods below Sancreed Beacon (that's what you need as well: a beacon - or did you already do one of those?). People still go there to tie things to the trees, make strange little offerings, remember their dead, and so on... Very strange place. Very ancient...
-
yeah, i need to get my woods sorted out as well at some point... but love the chalk figure idea...
-

That sounds similar to St Nectan's Kieve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Nectan's_Kieve) between Boscastle and Tintagel, where votive offerings are still left and a nearby tree is bedecked with strips of cloth. Will have to check out Sancreed next time I'm 'on the wrong side of the Tamar'.
As to terrain suggestions, what about a Tumulus? The heath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodbury_Common,_Devon) above my village has at least a dozen scattered about it, many sprouting Scots Pines (one was used as a Beacon in the ninth century and at the time of the Armada: there's continuity for you!) and I find them very evocative sites. Of course a circular mound of earth might seem somewhat boring so how about some rabbit holes at the base with some unearthed skulls and ancient relics tumbling out (ala M.R. James' 'A Warning to the Curious')?
I don't know if you realised, but I am plagiarising your most excellent project here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=13918.msg559309#msg559309)!
-

well looking at some of those dates, looks like you beat me to it - I don't go in Gothic Horror very often, but I had the same quandry when I started this one...
-
ok... as much as I love the chalk figure*, it's going to be far too large for the small skirmish area I'm working on, but I have gone with something that was simmering at the back of my mind and combining it with beacon idea and the already made gibbet...
I found some big blocks of polystyrene hiding at the back of my pile of stuff that's bound to come in useful someday, so a little corner hill is on the offing - and both beacon and gibbet's would have been placed in nice prominent positions like that. I also plan on using those palm trees Silversix forced me to buy for ferns as a start of some moors...
now I watched Plague of the Zombies recently, and although completely out of period for me, I would love to one day do that village with the sunken graveyard - something that the old classy GW graveyard always reminded me of... but more of that another time >:D
* just suddenly reminded of the Glastonbury Zodiac, all those symbols made out of the landscape - again too big, but a thought none the less...
-
Plague of Zombies is a classic and apparently heavily inspired the look and behaviour of the zombies in Night of the Living Dead two years later. In typically efficient Hammer fashion Plague... was shot back-to-back with The Reptile, which although not quite as engaging is also well worth a look!
Anyway, can't wait to see your latest terrain creations.
-
right... a larger whole with a couple of small bits... first off, a Fairy Fort - ok, so the term is Irish, but I like it and it fits the job. Bit of a bugger to photograph, but somewhere in there is a corner of a long forgotten Iron Age hill fort, eroded and overgrown and too big to photograph properly sadly...

the recess at the top takes a series of similarly based items, a fairy ring, a beacon and the gibbet...

more blurb and a couple more pics on the blog. :D

Ooh! The fairy ring is an excellent idea (and beautifully executed too!).
-
These look great :)
-
Lovely :-*
-
Am really enjoying what you are doing with this project. 8)

Wonderful work :)

Beautiful stuff.

cheers gents, the photos aren't really doing the hill many favours... am kind of doubting some of the tufting at the moment...

I think you may be a little too critical - everything is looking GREAT!! :-*
-
Have you seen the new upcoming film a Field in England done by the same guy who did kill list, it set in the english civil war and if its anything like Kill List may well have a supernatural theme, mention is made of mushrooms ;)
-

cheers, but something is bothering me... maybe the leaves on the bushes need a drybrush...
-

yep... discussed here http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=48702.0 and on my blog... :D
-
It looks perfectly fine to me, aeg.
Loving the inserts, good option for variety.
(Planning something similar myself with the Witch's Hut).
Like what you did with the Fairy Ring.
;)
-
sorry hadn't seen that post.
Ben
-
An excellent piece of terrain. I like the way you've allowed for different options for what goes at the top. Regarding your qualms I would say that judging by these pictures it looks absolutely fine as it is!
-
Inspiring thread :)
I think the hill looks fine as it is, but the multiple top idea is great.
-
AEG, your project really evolves and its a pity that I'll never play it :(
-
OK, this may be a bit silly, the wrong side of the Atlantic and maybe fifty years early, but then what the hell...
Warlock is a surprisingly good bit of 80's nonsense and, Satanic time storm and the bit with nipple eyes aside, actually has a fair bit of proper 17th century magic in it... of course, that goes by the time they did the sequel (which also had Jedi Druids and Stonehenge in California and I can't escape the feeling the 3rd one was filmed in Norfolk), but for this one there is a fair bit of folklore involved - even nails into the witches footprint...
I didn't want the mini too high from the base, so it could still fit in buildings and so on. I also originally planned something of a more arms out pose, but then that made him look like he was jumping up, and the crossed arms is a tad more arrogant...
I must admit, I'm not 100% with the conversion work (Warlord ECW infantryman, Warlord Zulu for the feet) or the paint job, and having acquired some dullcote (and all but finished Red Dead Redemption) may have rushed the last bit and duffed the face a wee bit... but anyway, it's silly...
-
It looks lovely, AEG! :-*
I have one tiny thought about the posture, and I know that it might be a bit rude, but when will you build his 30 men strong entourage of fellow dancers?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-pGzCre7Po
-
lol
-
Cracking job! Remember seeing this at the cinema. And yep, Lord of the Dance :)
-
who makes the naked lady?
-
who makes the naked lady?
Hasslefree, but the original model doesn't have a headgear.
Hope that helps.
-
test with some sponge... with leaves it should look ok I reckon...
and the rest:
I wanted something old and gnarly, so made three using some balse for the main trunk, lots and lots of wire (god that took a long time) and tissue paper and pva glue... there is some texture in there, it's just hard to see in the pics... as you can see, they are on CD bases, and I may have gone a bit OTT, but go back a couple of hundred years and you should have had some pretty old and big trees out and about... I hope...
and some Woodland Scenics jobbies for some younger growth, this time on minidisc bases, with the join hidden by the same tissue and pva and to help match them up to the larger ones...
and, for the river section dock, a removable jetty... it slots in perfectly and should give a bit of variety
(http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt214/chris_rowell1/Witchhunter/IMG_2052_zps0jdkerqw.jpg)
-
Ooh I like those! I'm looking to make some trees myself so I'll keep an eye on how these work out (never thought of using sponge...)
-
it's just to give some body to the foliage, with some leaf flocking it should look like a good thick canopy...
now, odd question - anyone know when pubs started having bars? I'm guessing a period pub would have a more open area with barrels and so on...
-
Great job, ASG! :-*
I'm unsure about the "pub" thingy. It might be a poorer version of an Inn?
-
ok... odd question, but am getting close to finishing the trees...
preferences for clump foliage or leaf foliage? I was intending to go with leaf, as i have a load and like the look on smaller bushes... but am also now wondering about clump which I've also got a load of and used on my hedges...
-
If you're going for a foresty look then you could have clump in the middle trees and leaves on the outside edge trees otherwise just go for leaves in general.
I like the size of them, proper trees 8)
Regarding 'pubs' I don't really know but The Cock in St Albans is a good place to start as apparently Olly Cromwell stayed there himself. True or not I don't know but that's the claim :)
cheers
James
-
(http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt214/chris_rowell1/Witchhunter/IMG_2062_zpssxzpzcz7.jpg)
right, sponge, painted dark green, leaf flock on top - needs some touching up, but on the whole it looks good from a distance, but close up, there are spots that just look too much like sponge... I'd hoped the holes would give a more layered feeling to the foliage, some depth, but not 100% it's worked...
may fill some too spongey bits with clump and reflock... or just go all clump...
-
I really like it, AEG :)
But chouldn't you have some more colours in it? It's a bit flat at the moment. Not being rude or anything (well a bit) :)
-
I think it looks great! :-*
Silversixx stop being rude! :P lol
-
no, he's right, but that gets done later...
-
sigh... have just realised my start on the pub doesn't follow any normal timberframed floor plan... maybe open hall at a push... with an extension*... don't think it's going to bother me that much as I planned it for playabilty and space inside for a good fight, corridors and rooms upstairs to search... and should double as a manor/farm house as well... so timberframed tradition may go out the window here, but then I made the blacksmiths up as well...
*now need to make that look like a later addition
-
Who cares? Who knows? :)
Sorry ASG, but the first thing I do when I watch a beautiful board is not pointing out that the pub doesn't follow standard build regulations of the period.
-
I know... just got carried away trying to make it look like my inspiration for the interior*, that I forgot about the handy timberframe buildings book I have... o_o
*the farmhouse from Blood on Satans Claw and the pub from Carry on Dick...
-
ok, basic walls for the pub/manor/farmhouse
(http://i613.photobucket.com/albums/tt214/chris_rowell1/Witchhunter/IMG_2063_zpsl7wfve1l.jpg)
some interior walls needed, stairs aren't attached just yet... most furnishings won't be, so I can swap out for pub/homely furniture and so on...
I've altered the original footprint, so the building conforms slightly more to the classic T plan, this just meant narrowing the main hall - which has actually helped with a problem I hadn't forseen with the overhang needing to cover the bay window, it would have stuck out too much if it was flush with the main door wall as it was... this way is much better.
have skimped a bit on windows, I want a few plain walls to have some flexiblity with adjacent buildings/lean-to's and the upper floor will have plenty of light down into the hall... it should make sense... there will be a small back room for shady dealings and a hefty door - a cellar hatch gives some scope for smuggling and a passage into the neighbouring stables to avoid the local constable.
-
Looking good. I'm looking forward to seeing this progress.

Me too!
8)
I am very much looking forward to seeing this one progress.
I do love an AEG build.
Oh, yes!
:-*
-
Great looking pub/manor :-*. I'm looking forward to see the thing finished.
-
first floor walls up... I haven't quite decided on windows in that end wall just yet, or door placement for the room at the top of the stairs, so those need working on...
I couldn't do balsa for floorboards as normal, due to the thickness, so I bit the bullet and carved the floor boards into the foampvc for the first floor, quite chuffed with the finish...
I also redid the stairs, made from scratch from foampvc, toothpicks, plasticard and a cocktail stick, which means they match the ones I had to make for the access to the attic.

Impressive looking build 8)
cheers

-
Well thought out, realistic and bloody gorgeous, mate!
Those stairs are just too good.
:-* :-*
Your thought processes and planning put my chaotic, cobbled together efforts to shame.
-
cheers all... planning... yes...
ahem... so, anyone know of some formula to work out the angle where two pitched roofs meet?
-
Two ways.
Traditional geometry with applied trigonometry or cut some shapes out and make a best guess :D
cheers
James
-
yeah, that's what I thought... lol
-
...make a best guess :D
How did you discover my formula? :)

ok, basic build is done, some little kinks to fix, narrow gaps mainly where the floors meet, but they are easy enough to solve...
forgot to cut a window in the attic at the very back - will do that later...
and so the attic - perfect for staff quarters, storage, dormitory or strange and vile experiments in the dark arts...
so, next (after the gap filling) is some detail both in and out, bannisters and so on, chimney is going to go here:
but waiting on a fireplace before I commit. Then the beaming begins... I may take a break before then though, just to recharge.
-
Oh, my giddy aunt!
That is simply stunning, mate!
:-* :-* :-*
I wish that I had your patience.
This is going to be so good.

Awesome ;D

Lovely
If you are into 17th C witchery then keep an eye out for a film called 'A Field In England'.
Very, very odd indeed and not to everybody's tastes I imagine but essentially 4 soldiers in a field with a fairy ring and a black magician.
Atmospheric, beautifully shot but not your standard storyline or treatment.

Is that the one done by that group of reenactors?
-
cheers all...
Is that the one done by that group of reenactors?
it's by Ben Wheatley who did Kill List and Sightseers. Trailer is on my blog and there is a thread about it here somewhere. Am in two minds about it from the trailer, but will watch it...
-
That is a mammoth construction. Looking forward to seeing it in all its glory, carpeted and everything ;)
And let's face it. If you ever get bored with it, it's going to make some lucky girl a hell of a doll's house!
Is it too late to add a priest hole? :)
-
Is it too late to add a priest hole? :)
goddammit!

Fantastic stuff. ;D I hope you don't mind but I have stolen some of your ideas for some houses I am building. I am not in your league when it comes to detail but I can hope to improve.
-
not at all... post them up... just remember the priest hole... >:(

Amazing :o :-*

EDIT: edited for the realisation I've done wood panelling before... sigh...

That's stonking!

ok, may not have been very productive lately, but have been doing things - just not much...
now, need some advice - what would be the best sheet material for doing stone walls on the lower floor of the manor house? looking ahead and thinking of a fortified manor house and the easiest way of having this look right, is to do stone on the lower walls.
I did have some foamboard type stuff from antenociti embossed with a stone pattern (which I used on the ruined tower years ago - http://anevilgiraffe.blogspot.co.uk/2010/02/ruined-tower.html), but they don't seem to do it anymore. Anyone know of a source for this stuff? Or a similar, suitable alternative? want something with a bit more texture and depth than plasticard.
Would walls like this be made from larger blocks or just brick?
I should hopefully have some trees done soon and normal service can resume... especially as I've almost completed Borderlands.
-
Could be made of either block or brick but have a look here for different styrene sheeting.
http://www.ema-models.co.uk/index.php/sheet-materials/plastikard-embossed-styrene.html (http://www.ema-models.co.uk/index.php/sheet-materials/plastikard-embossed-styrene.html)
cheers
James
-
I would listen to what James says.
He certainly knows his sheet!
:D
-
I carved mine from impact sound isolation (or however you call that stuff that keeps the sound of your feet from arriving at the floor below you) foam sheets... ;D
An example can be found in the lowest pic here: http://basteltisch.blogspot.de/2013/08/some-buildings.html
Visible stone floors in buildings tended to beither made from brick or hewn stone, but those were for the richer homes... other materials (like unhewn stones) were usually plastered. Both varaints (visible and plastered) often used large hewn stone corners that usually were kept visible.
-> conclusion for a lazy and believable solution you just have to do cornerstones and the frames of windows and doors in stone (and maybe carve some stones beneath fallen off plaster for a better look)

Why don't you do like I do with the horse hair dyed brown, with a dash of pva in to stiffen it, drybrush, dip in flock and the cut with a scissor for whatever shape you want?
Damn, this project moves as fast as all my projects. Time to invest in a cupboard (damn you Jimbibbly and kharma!)...
-
Just discovered (and read through) this project. So far I'm loving it and it actually mirrors a project I was thinking up last night after watching Devil's Whore on 4oD. I'm assuming you've read 2000AD's Defoe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defoe_%28comics%29)? It's a great resource for ECW era skirmishes
-
goddammit!
lol Brilliant Chris. More pics please!
-
panelling is coming along ;)
-
hmmm... decorative lace braid/trim for carved wood moldings? the basic theory is sound, but we'll see...
-
This is looking very promising! Impressive project as well!
I built a tavern for Witchhunter last year or so, but yours is even bigger! Very curious to see how it will turn out.
-
hopefully the ground floor interior will be done over the weekend, but man, nothing shows up a hinky angle like a load of laser cut square panels... >:(
-
Regarding your tree problems, this is the route I am taking:
http://thereppledeppleclubhouse.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/trouble-with-trees.html
-
ok, not the best pics, and a very messy WIP (g/s mainly and some black paint as I realised I had some overhangs that would only prove trickier down the line)
Upstairs view of the hall - upstairs window still to be cut out in case you were wondering:
And the downstairs main hall, the little laser cut panels don't half show up some hinky angles, so that's been fiddled and hidden as best as I can. Final paint job should hide all of that:
And from the other way:
Fireplace is scratch built after all, as are the stairs and bannisters (toothpicks and Empire Knight heads for the panther heads), hatch in the back has a ring courtesy of some Empire bit I forget, need to do the render in there. Still pondering stone for the outer lower walls...
-
Fantastic work! :-*
-
Starting to really come together now AEG! Great work. It's going to look fab when it's finished :)
-
Going to be spectacular. Fit for a Terileptil.
-
all that green makes it look dirty! Can't wait to see it with a layer of color on!
-
I love it! :-*
And the complexity will either shelve the project (drawing us a 1-1), or amazing. Both are two good things ;)
-
Excellent, can't wait to see it with some paint on it. ;D
-
Holy biscuits... you're going all-out on this one!
-
Just seen this for the first time. Fantastic!!! I've stayed up past my bed time going through it all and will be back to go over it again in the morning. Truly a wonderful job on everything...especially that fishman/bat daemon!!! :-*
-
That, Sir, is fecking ace!!! :o :o :o :-* :-* :-*
-
impressive bit of stuff AEG :)
-
cheers, gents. slowly getting my mojo back on this one... lol

That's shaping up really nicely. I love all the little bits of detail going into this

oh, forgot to mention I think, the panels are available on an A4 sheet from Fenris...

That is some stunning progress, AEG!
It is gonna be gorgeous when you have finished.
:-* :-*
cheers, gents. slowly getting my mojo back on this one... lol
I, for one, am really glad that you have found the bugger.
Nothing quite as bad as your mojo going astray.
;)

I've dropped most of my moho with house move, so go AEG! :)

loads of different sprues half price if you scroll down, for all the periods they do, great conversion fodder as you may have noticed... :D
as for the manor house - door production line has almost finished (handles needed), interiors are pretty much done, bare some door frames... what has taken so long is fiddly bits and doing said bits, not liking them the next day, undoing bits, damn that ruined that bit, repairing bits, doing bits, etc...
-
quick update, despite the time between updates, nothing much appears to have been done, but it has, and undone, and picked apart, and then repairs made, and then done again...

very poor photo, but hopefully you can see some detail on the doors, there are two doors with a little viewing hatch in, one will be the front door, the other will be swappable with the back door or the door into the back room den as needed. door handles are to follow, I have an idea, but it will have to wait until after payday.
starting to think of furniture and decorations, need animal heads for the walls...

I see progress, mate.
:D
Great stuff!
Those doors look the business.

great progresses indeed! I would love to see pictures of any sight of the interiors, but probably it's asking too much lol

well, being mostly white, it doesn't photograph very well... lol
-
Wow, that's quite spectacular! :-*
-
love this, pone of my favourite topics that I'm following ;)
-
Love this mate! :-*
-
This is going to be finished by Halloween right? ;)
-
have had a thought...
oh, and I kept the cork board on the other side - I plan to use that for urban/industrial terrain...
rather than progress with urban/industrial on the other side (which is not progressing at all), I still have more of the mat, I'm thinking on the pros and cons of doing that side as grass with a dirt road... the cork should allow the road to be quite reasonably sunken, but am aware that could cause the overall structure to get a bit wibbly.
alternatively, total grass on the cork side, but the cork would allow flexi roads to be added with pins (suitably disguised pin heads), the mat should survive the occassionaly pin, and it's what the cork is designed for afterall...
-
a little WIP, undecided on hair, also need to get some different heads...
as I had the idea for him, he became affectionately known as John Wootton in my head, although I quite like the nickname The Apostle as well... I had thought of Red Right Hand as well, but that fits more of a organisation, so will save that for my Church hunters.
-
That fella looks good so far, mate.
8)
What kind of heads are you looking for, as I have a fair selection?
-
I think I may get some of the Westwind saxon/pict heads to see if they will work.
-
Let me dig around.
I may have some Pict/Celt types.
;)
-
cool, won't say no... :D
-
Lovely :)
-
I know this seems like it's slowing down, but by god that chimney is a pain... getting there, but it's just slow... a fair bit of timbering is already done, and then it's tiles, which has got me thinking the roof is rather a large surface with little of interest happening... so maybe, just maybe some more dormer windows...
thinking of one along the corridor to the main bedrooms here:
and maybe one in the attic - haven't a suitable pic at the mo, so roughly in the corner of the roof join, facing off camera to the left:
I figured this could be handy, and game wise it would be fun to have folks going out windows, over the roof and in another window... thoughts?
-
Dormer windows?
Rooftop action?
Of course it sounds good, mate.
Really glad that you posted today as I knew there was something else I was supposed to be looking for before I did my 'post run' tomorrow...D'oh!
Let me dig around.
I may have some Pict/Celt types.
;)
::)
Sorry, mate.
Digging later....
-
Bloody hell, mate! :-*
-
Sorry, mate.
Digging later....
no worry :D
I don't know if this is of interest to any following this, but I've just asked 4ground if they think about doing a sheet of just windows, rather than with the doors and ladders and such... of course I need a lot of windows, but as they are so handy I can't see that they wouldn't be a good seller and of use to any modeller, if interest needs to be gauged I'll let you know.
-
Windows would certainlt seem like a sensible addition to their range, especially for those building Old West stuff (like I am... ::)).
-
well windows are on the cards it seems - they will be cut from two sheets and supplied with acetate to do glass sandwiched between them, apparently some of the Wild West range they have already have this window style...
-
Store the acetate in a sealed bag with your superglue if you want it to look more 'ancient' or frosted.
;)
-
Ok, timbering done, need to do the curved corner timbers, some distressing with the wire brushes, inevitable g/s repairs, then window sills from matchsticks and the rendering... and tiles, getting a bit worried about the roof tiles now, the cobbled together nature of my build may not lend itself very well to lots and lots of narrow horizontal lines...
And, added a couple of dormer windows for the attic to the rear of the house, decided the roof was to much of a featureless expanse and windows looking down into a courtyard at the rear would make sense for a working inn. The chimney was a bit of a bugger, initially it was much thicker, but decided to narrow it down, stil undecided on the top, a couple of pots are possible. Also, I'd initially placed the breaks level with the floor breaks, but this meant exactly matching that, so it was easier to make the break higher up, so each floors chimney extends into the next floor - this also helps serve as anchor points for each floor, as do the attic dormers.
There is also a little detail on the end of the main part of the building, a vent for an internal smoke bay, which would be under the stairs to the attic. This does serve a purpose for when the rear room on the ground floor is kitted out to be a kitchen. Planning you see...
I need to get some figures painted soon though, been a while and starting to get that itch, especially with Dr Payne from Heresy and today being, well, you know...
-
:o
Wonderful stuff, mate.
This is turning it an amazing, HUGE build.
Love the work on the dormers and chimney.
:-* :-*
Regarding the roof tiles: Getting some tile sheets from Bibbles at Oshiro may well be the answer.
;)
-
have some from Fenris... still room to screw it up mind... lol
-
You could use broken coffee stirrers as shingles. IMHO they look great but take a while.

I agree with this.

I built a roof this size using small card squares and it took for ever. The big mansion in the pic above.
Now I would go for the Oshiro ones as well.
-
Although i'm sure that Jim's tiles are perfect, i'd add also those casted by myself in the list. Small but detailed, in 12x9 cm sheets.
I used them in my most recent project, it's 15mm, but they work better for 28.

right... I'm back, the novelty of Fallout 3 is being to wane...
the inn for now is taking a sabatical, I need to get some figures done, but before then, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for the Devil?
at the moment, I'm thinking tall, thin, old (Elizabethan?) clothes, but dapper with it... unarmed preferably, or maybe with a thin rapier... head will be swapped out...
talking of heads, along with some lovely wolves from Mojo Minis, I have the basis for my Gabriel Hounds... I see much greenstuffing ahead of me...
and finally, anyone know how big the Redoubt Musketeers range is? I have a suspicion there is a deceptive 40mm range out there and not sure if they are it, I know Redoubt tend to be big, but how big are these chaps?
-
The Redoubt figures are large, not 40mm, but certainly over 30mm.
-
a bit rushed, but trying to get back in the swing of things and trying to hit the end of the month...
Some supernatural beasties that have been planned for a while, but I needed the right canine body. Gabriel Hounds (also called Gabble Hounds for the noise they make as they fly across the sky - which was probably just geese) are said to be born by the death of unbaptised children and have the heads of humans. The heads in this case are from the werewolf head sprues from Maxmini, the wolf body is from MiniatureMojo's Scavenge Skirmish Survive range - they have 3 different types available, but I prefered the hunched pose.
Not my best paint jobs, I hate doing fur as it never allows me to blend like I normally do, plus I wasn't happy with the white (definitely need to buy the very intriguing White set from Andrea Color). And they had to be white according to legend, with red ears - I had planned on blending the ears in to the white, but the fur around the heads put paid to that.
If I ever get the chance to do an Akula and get my own mini's made up, these are the first things I'll have made...
and a quick rebase for an old figure that was for a planned Slaine type affair, but will equally do muster for the Folk Horror stuff... a crone for the maiden Angel Blake...

I like the hounds. They're somewhat sinister without being too different from the main figure; you almost have to look twice at them. Very nice work.
-
The hounds are realy cool, will steal that idea :)

I was thinking of a way of describing my feeling of the hounds and Steve has nailed it.
Brilliant, mate!
And very clever.
:-* 8) :-*
Whereas that hag is just damned scary.
:o
-
The hag is realy a great model, have her too.
Using her as witch for SA ;)

Looking good mate!

Great additions 8)
cheers
James
-
Wonderfully horrifying new additions!
-
The hounds are really uncanny, very clever idea.
-
Great thread - have been watching from the shadows for a while. Hmm - Old Nick ... got the Warlord version of Cardinal Richelieu for him myself ... comes with a chap wearing an iron mask, too ... though not thin enough for your version, maybe.
-
I have plans for the good Cardinal :D
-
Great stuff!
Eureka Miniatures do or did a 40mm musketeers range. I also saw a 40mm ECW ranges sometime from one of the larger scale model manufacturers, but I can't for the life of me remember which one.
-
ok, have started a thread in the Cthulhu board about this chap, but figured it was worth sharing here in case you don't go that way...
http://www.skirmishterrain.co.uk/
some very nice looking 28mm terrain, the sawmill is perhaps a tad too modern for this, but the forge would work if I hadn't already built one... have asked him for pics of the house and barn mind.
-
Sash and Saber do 40mm ECW as well:
or Romanoff Figures:

Still don't remember the other one. >:(

a bit of a build for February... a gatehouse to go alongside the manor house to help vary it up a bit and as a start to a coaching inn type courtyard... I had hoped to be further along with this one, but a bug swept the office and I've been playing alot of Fallout: New Vegas...
anyhoo, the side piece is designed to slot on over the chimney at the end of the manor house like so:
it's a bit more fanciful than the main house, but I've tried to give it a bit of character to match the vague idea of phases of build (with the manor house having a newer wing attached to an older converted hall), so they've used the remains of an old watch tower and added a timber frame on top - once the timbering is done, there should be sense of stone work trimmed and patched to fit the frame in places... in time, with additional pieces I can have a decent coaching inn yard with stables and maybe even a fortified manor house, depending on bits made and used...
I'd toyed with several uses for the new building, but space restricted any stairway, so I had to use a ladder which changed it a little bit in my mind... so I could still make the most of the thinner room over the gate, I figured a loft door would look nice enough and the whole top floor can be just used as storage, which will make furnishing easy, with maybe a merchants desk on the raised ground floor.
the front has an overhang on the older stone base, figuring if you could get a little more floor space you would... as I said, a little more fantasy perhaps, but I'm quite happy with it so far...
-
That looks bloody brilliant, mate.
:-* :-*
Now please stop it, as I really like that arch and want to build something similar.
>:( >:(
;)
-
It just gets bigger and bigger :o 8) :-*
-
WOW Stunning build :-* :-* :-* :-*

ok, have started a thread in the Cthulhu board about this chap, but figured it was worth sharing here in case you don't go that way...
http://www.skirmishterrain.co.uk/
some very nice looking 28mm terrain, the sawmill is perhaps a tad too modern for this, but the forge would work if I hadn't already built one... have asked him for pics of the house and barn mind.
I bought one of his Forge's for another overseas member and something strange occurred.
Be warned that, should you buy from him on ebay, you will get a weird email message, sent yia his website and NOT ebay, that tells you NOT to pay through the ebay system 'under any circumstances'.
I already had so I contacted him via ebay to ask why this had happened.
He told it was some strange aggressive quirk in his web design and asked me to ignore it and that he would rectify the problem.
I appear to have the Forge at work (my delivery address), so all appears to be ok.
Just thought that I would mention it, in case the same thing happens to anyone else...
-
:-* anevilgiraffe. Do you do full size builds as well? I have this outbuilding...
-
cheers all... no, I'm a frustrated tenant though, so that might explain a lot...

Great job!! Where are those plastic sheets with the stone texture from?

It is up to the standard advertised from what I can see, mate.
I did not open every packet, just the largest, as I would have to repack it all to send overseas.
I did open a small cardboard box that contains the tiny pieces and the detail is very good and crisp for painting.
From what I saw, I would recommend them.
:)

Wills Scenics (Coarse Stone if memory serves), very thick and sturdy, if a bugger to cut...

Hei,
as I'm the guy Mason is shipping the forge to I'm happy to provide some pics/comparisons as soon as I get her :D
-
The forge arrived yesterday, nice kit I have to say :D
Try to get some pics done today
-
ok - any ideas on sources for reasonably small tudor roses or coats of arms for some wall decoration... have picked up a 1/12 dolls house coat of arms, but it's looks bigger in the hand than I thought and the smallest rose I can find (key chain) is again going to be a tad too much I think - will check on the model tonight, but on my desk at work it is not giving me any good vibes....
-
gates for the gatehouse, scratchbuilt using the Tudor Wall Panelling from Fenris, they still need hinges fitting, but are pretty much done... as I was at it I did a 2nd left side gate with a wicket door just for variety

ok, excuse the poor photos (colours really aren't being done credit), but have finally got stuff to stick to the sodding trees... it looks much more blended in real life, but job done (finally). The big trees sadly just didn't work, tried and tried to get them looking as I intended and just couldn't - so chopped them down and used the bases for thickets (as I was very happy with the bases), these are a good solid line of sight blocker, and will be doing some smaller ones as well to help make a more overgrown woodland-ish look. The new and improved foliage of course meant I needed to redo my bushes, so the hillfort and other bits of undergrowth have been redone to match the thickets, again, photos don't really do it justice... but as I said, more bits are in progress as I've run out of Burnt Umber.
as the trees were to big to really get in the light tent, the board came out, which then dovetailed into a request to see it all, so above is the woodland in progress, with stone circle and hillfort, and below is the coaching inn, the blacksmiths and the two houses...
this has been surprising useful in that it fills the area better than I had thought - I have two more 2-storey houses to build which should about do it, along with some little bits for flavour (a well and some mud/dirt roads/townsquare), plus of course I still want to do a church and graveyard as a 3rd option (none of which yet exists). Also unseen is the river side which would roughly fill the bottom corner area above, and numerous hedges I built ages back when I was working to fill a larger area, plus some drystone walls from Fenris Games.
-
Coming along very nicely 8)
-
I love everything about this project!
Have just tried the Donnybrook rules which would be right perfect for this!
-

Have just tried the Donnybrook rules which would be right perfect for this!
I think this is very true. Rules made for your project
-
what did you use in the end to stick the foliage to the trees? I've been struggling to find anything that lasts reasonably well ...
-
hobb-e-tac - then a bit of bonsai like pruning and positioning with superglue (anything that moved too much or any exposed bits of branch), and then spray with matt varnish - it's not 100% but it seems to stand up ok...
-
Lovely mate :)
But that whole frame-thingy looks a bit out of place. Can't you just put some wood on there?
-
Some supernatural beasties that have been planned for a while, but I needed the right canine body.
How hard a conversion job was it, they look fantastic
-
not that hard, the difference in fur is a bit stark from the heads (GW style leaf like fur) to the bodies (fur like fur)

Argh! Go away with this project. I can't handle the distrac... Hopkins! Witchfinder General!!!

Those Gabbie Wolves work really well- they have the right creepy look to them for a witch hunters game.

right - period chickens would be free roaming I assume (as opposed to in an enclosure)...

well, bet no one was expecting this to raise it's head again :)
another house all but done, needs doors (no idea why I never make doors before I start painting) and windows...

That is a lovely clean, crisp building and the putty work on the Mummers is most impressive.
:-* :-*
Great to see this thread resurrected too.
One of my favourites.
:D

Back from the dead! How appropriate. The building looks great, and I love the mummers (i used to be in a mumming play every year... Great fun. Much beer... )

A very welcome return. The mummers look great. Does the gent in the frock (or bearded lady) have something concealed behind his/her back?

cheers one and all :)
Does the gent in the frock (or bearded lady) have something concealed behind his/her back?
yep, forget who made the base figure, want to say Black Cat, but think I'm getting mixed up with the gypsy dancer type they do (who is a very big figure by the way, so not destined for this project unless I do another man in a dress type)... had to redo the arm as it looked too short, but that gave me a chance to man it up a bit. pics of the rears of the all on my blog.
-
That building is lovely and the conversions really work well :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Top work Chris.
-
Excellent, good to see the project come to life again.
-
just had to pull everything from my file host (trying to help my dad with a driver that he can't download - long story), so pic links will be dead - will re-up everything asap.
-
almost a year on, so time for some action lol
the main downside is my webhost (ntlworld as was) was axed, so every image I have ever posted has died. I'm trying something with Amazon Drive, and have updated the first 5 pages of my photos on this thread. Could folks look them over to make sure they are now visible. It's a long winded job, but if it works, I can start posting stuff - yes, actual new stuff... :o :o :o
-
They seem to be ok to me.
AND: I look forward to some new stuff!
:D :D
-
Yep. They're there. Bring on the updates! :)
-
just some scenery for now, but will get snapping when I get home...
-
OK, apologies for the poor photos - very rusty...
First up, a hillock - I wanted something to break up the flat surface a bit, and did a small ridge line, with a worn path down the middle. I think the grass needs to be a bit thicker and may add some more bushes.
The usual 'mini-disc' recess allows various bits to be added - a tree, the gibbet and so on.
In this instance it's the next item - a chicken coop. A small cardboard piece from Petite Properties 1/48 dolls house range. Again, I think it needs a touch up, bit more grey weathering - it's been a long time. The chicken is from Mega-Minis if memory serves, one of those things that has been kicking around for ever it seems.
And finally, a small add on for the houses, a little garden plot, cabbages and some sickly looking herbs. I did toy with doing a climbing frame of something, but thought it might be a little anachronistic. The wattle fencing is from eBay and is designed for railway layouts, but I reckon it does ok for 28mm. A stray bit of bush in the corner, and escaping out the other side to help hide a dodgy join.

anyhoo, hopefully there will be another update within a year this time lol windows have been ordered from 4ground with the intention of starting to paint the manor house....

Looking good, mate, ....

.... good to see you back.
:D
I have one of those chicken coop and have never gotten around to doing naything with it.
It looks good so you may have nudged me to include it into my next building....whenever that may be.

well Mason, your city build was equally inspiring - what have you been upto while I've been gone?
-
well Mason, your city build was equally inspiring - what have you been upto while I've been gone?
In the last year, not too much to be honest.
I have made small additions to my Old West town of Upsheet Creek:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=60011.0
.....and a few small bits have been added to my Strange Aeons project:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=39808.0
Other than that it has mostly been messing around with greenstuff that has kept me out of trouble.
;)
-
Well, say it is high time Mason went and got himself in some sort of modeling trouble so we can all ooh and awe at. Yes?
Like your latest bits, by the way - the coop and cabbage (maybe a name for an Inn?). ::)
-
gods dammit - pic links have died... looks like Amazon wasn't the solution I hoped....
-
halfway through tiling the roof of the manor house and the tiles I ordered knowing I was running low are the wrong bloody ones!
I was so getting in the zone doing the tiling, feel a bit out of sorts now that's fallen flat ;D ;D ;D
-
gods dammit - pic links have died... looks like Amazon wasn't the solution I hoped....
Just go the Photobucket route, mate.
The ads can be a bit of a pain but it is free and easy.

quite chuffed with the wall sundial, although now I kind of think I should have done it as a detachable thing, so I could entertain my other thought of a canon emplacement up there for the fortified manor house vibe... anyway...
that's when I ran out of tiles....

Lovely design on that building.
Very nice indeed.

I would be pretty miffed too, as you have done a cracking job on those tiles.

Excellent stuff as always, good to see the project still going ;D

Ohhh! That's just a bit special, ain't it? :o
-
Great work!
-
Yes, looks great. I have just started putting together buildings for a Mordheim table so this is inspiring.
-
Yep, great progress and good to see you back :)
-
cheers all, once the roof is finished, it's time to start painting... new tiles en route hopefully...

thinking about the furnishings, have some tapestries to play with - but who does mounted animal heads? Can't find the old Mega Minis range - could have used that bear skin rug as well...

An easy way to make mounted animal heads is to go to the cheap isle at the toy section of the larger stores. Decapitate some of the cheap plastic animals that are close to the right scale, make your plaques for them to attach to out of cereal box card and it works great.
-
Interior WIP - although the quick photos under flash is revealing a touch more blemishes than I'd hoped.... mainly uneven washes and touch ups that are more obvious than I'd hoped.

it also occured to me that the modular (removable) bar should probably be painted at the same time as the walls, as should the doors, so they match.... so sudden change of tack and bar is built (above) and doors are getting prepped and then I'll try and make it all look better....
-
That's looking lovely :-* :-*
cheers
James

That's going to be the most spectacular doll's house on the planet! Love the panelling. :-*

Bellissimo!

Really great looking build. Great to see so much interior detailing.
cheers chaps, however I think I'll redo the paneling - it's currently mahogany, but I thing I'll redo it to match the floorboards as it would be oak and stained the same...
I'm not sure - having some difference in colour helps - if every thing is the same shade it will look very similar (obviously) and while this might be more realistic, I think sometimes with a model it helps to make floors and walls look more different than they would in the real world. In full sized things, there are differences in light, and wear that won't really be apparent in a scale model - but by changing the colour of the floor these things, then look 'right'.
-
If the house is early to mid 17th century, which I'm assuming it is given the subject matter, then the wall panelling would most likely have been oak. Late 17th century panelling often used cheaper woods like pine, which would frequently have been painted. Given the potential variations in treatment and use I'd say it was perfectly reasonable to have the walls and floors look slightly different.
-
well I've gone much darker and I really like it - much better in my eyes anyway. Will try and get a quick pic when I get home from work.
-
The oak panelling did apparently darken over time due to things like the impact of open fires, etc. so darker is also perfectly reasonable.
-
lots to tidy up... but really prefer it...

Sadly my laptop is dead, and need to sort out pics and photo hosting after a hiatus... but a glimpse of some 17th C. undead and some buildings about on the offing...
-
It lives!
How appropriate lol
Good to see this project resurrected.
:)
-
Agreed, good to see progress on this again.
I think you need some hats on those Zombies, nothing gives "period" to a generic figure better than appropriate headgear.
-
It's alive!
This thread is one of the ones that has lurked in the back of my head for ages and inspired my current dabble in weird/horror ECW stuff. I think I'll have to go right back to the start of it and re-read the whole thing.
Glad to see you back at it!
-
Hurrah!
This project is one of the ‘old favourites’ that I pondered when I recently started a 17thC project of my own.

Cheers guys.
Started work on a base for the mill to allow it to fit in with my river, once that is worked out I’ll know what to do with the millstone inside.

Awesome stuff... I look forward to seeing what you do with the Blotz buildings and reading a review by way of a comparison with the 4Ground structures. :)

Plodding along, but a quandary - to tree or not to tree...

A tree would be nice :). What about a hedge? Or just a couple of shrubs on one corner?
-
A shrubbery! lol

There was always going to be bushes of some kind, it just looks strangely tall and stark.

Ok, so I’m thinking a wall mounted dovecote... it’s in period, but I do have a niggle about housing birds next to a source of grain... o_o ???

Through all these years your project is my main inspiration :).

Great looking mill. Maybe some ivy climbing that big wall?
Also opportunities for worn out millstones as scatter outside the mill?

I'd actually toyed with old millstones... I settled on a spare inside...
good news, I have a new laptop, which means once I get Photobucket up and running again, some decent pictures should be possible

trialling a new photo host, the pics on the first 4 pages have been redone, so we'll see how they last....

OK, so finally got a photo session and so here are the zombies from a while back... not sure my camera is at it's best anymore, it doesn't remember the date or settings when it's turned off... but hey, better pics than I've been managing....
So... Mantic zombies with a variety of g/s to just 17thC them up a bit...
more base figure, some g/s to vary the poses etc...
and the three ladies with g/s saggy boobs... one is ripped off as I couldn't get them even and lost patience...
-
and the cart store/barn - another Blotz kit, I only used the provided beams for the front because - arches... the other sides I did with balsa as usual.. the Blotz beams are serviceable, but they just differ too much from my other buildings... I did try them, but end up stripping them and redoing it all. I tried the brick pattern for the lower panels as well, but I just didn't like the look, so liquid g/s over those bits.
rooftiles and spare wheel from Warbases.co.uk, pick axe from I honestly don't remember (came on a sprue with a shovel, sledge hammer and a hoe), the hook was just balsa and plastic rod... just a little bit of something to tart the inside of an otherwise simple building...
I've a couple of pics of it without the roof, but the free image host doesn't like it when I do too many in one sitting... :D They will be on the blog shortly...
-
Very nice colouring in.
-
Great improvement to the Blotz kit.
-
Nice work.
The interior walls texture looks particularly good.

Lovely additions to the collection. ;D

Do you still use the witchfinder general rules? I have to take a second view on them. They terrain is great and I sorted out some figures for the rules

Do you still use the witchfinder general rules? I have to take a second view on them. They terrain is great and I sorted out some figures for the rules
Never took to them. They are just a fantasy ruleset, no flavour. As I’ve said elsewhere in this thread, vampires are not part of the 17th century’s tradition. Witchfinder General was just a Warhammer clone really and put the Vampire Counts as the big bad. It needed to be about the devil, about pagan beliefs. Witches and cultists yes, revenants and ghouls arguably yes, demons or Nick himself definitely yes, but not creatures from our fantasy traditions. Gadzooks It’s The Apocalypse! had my interest until they had spider demons as a faction, I asked if they were from a reference or source (even a vague reference that could be extrapolated out for game terms), but they didn’t know.
I’m slowly still thinking of ideas for my own set, but may still as easily adapt an existing set - I really like the Burning Sands rules for Conan for core gameplay.
-
This thread is brilliant! The buildings are superb and love them zombies...
-
So, I picked up a church... good price for a very basic kit, need to find some nice textured sheets for stonework...

Church looks like a good starting point, like a cut-down version of the Warbases church.
Which reminds me, I should attempt to finish the interior of my Warbases church at some point, the outside has been done for two years or so, but who's counting? (link to most recent relevant blog post... (http://www.warbard.ca/2017/06/08/warbases-church-part-two/))
-
Nice, don’t see many red brick churches. I’m torn between stone or flint.

Nice, don’t see many red brick churches. I’m torn between stone or flint.
My inspiration is a church in Shropshire that I think is actually reddish stone of some sort, not brick, judging by the size of the blocks and the rest of the construction. I do intend to go back and do some of the outside stonework in the grey/tan/yellowish shades seen in the Wikipedia photo.

Throughout the UK there are a good selection of churches and cathedrals made from red sandstone. I live near Chester and the cathedral is made of sandstone (as are the city walls)

Pimping progress, forgive the link, easier to upload phone photos to the blog than the image host. Finished pics will be more resplendent. Hopefully.

The church is coming along great. You've done a great job using the Blotz kit as skeleton to build on. I have to build a church this summer for one of our campaign games so I will probably go the same route.
-
Well, stuff has been done...
First up, the church:
https://anevilgiraffe.blogspot.com/2020/04/church-finished.html?m=1 (https://anevilgiraffe.blogspot.com/2020/04/church-finished.html?m=1)
All done... pics using my phone which have come out quite well. Not sure how to get images hosted from the phone, so just the blog link I’m afraid.
There are a couple more things to follow, so bare with me, blog posts on the phone are slow going...

That’s it for now folks :D
-
Superb. The church looks fantastic (in and out) and the locals excellent too.
-
Fantastic model of a church. The wallpaper stones give a fantastic outer finish.
-
All excellent results and ideas. I will steal several of them when I get around to picking up my similarly themed project.
First up, the church:
https://anevilgiraffe.blogspot.com/2020/04/church-finished.html?m=1 (https://anevilgiraffe.blogspot.com/2020/04/church-finished.html?m=1)
It looks amazing, you can no longer tell it's one of those lasercut shells. How did you go about gluing on the wallpaper? (what glue, how was it applied)
-
Excellent! :-*
Your project has been inspiring 8)
-
Lovely work Chris, particularly like the church :-*
-
Thanks all, lockdown has it’s plus side
How did you go about gluing on the wallpaper? (what glue, how was it applied)
I thickened the walls by adding layers of foampvc inside (2mm thick) and out (1mm thick) to give it some heft and allow the laser cut window trims to not stand so proud. I then scored the hell out of the foampvc in every direction to give a better surface grab. I work for an industrial adhesive supplier and their own brand PVA (Timbond) has a very high solid content. It was all glued and weighted flat before assembling, the key point is to seal the edges, make sure they didn’t get a chance to peel. The quoins are Wills railway bits I had kicking around (nicer than the mdf ones they supplied with the kit) and they were superglued. It’s all quite sturdy.

Fantastic work on both the figures and the church. :-* :-*
-
Fantastic update, especially those nicely minimalist ghosties. I think that GW special was UK-only, but I might have to finally break down and buy actual GW figures for the first time in ~25 years of gaming because I really like the ghost/banshee stuff they've got in plastic right now.
-
Wonderful work. Particularly enjoyed the Mad Mummers.
-
The ghosts? The wicker man?
I'm gonna have to go back and read all 40 pages of this, aren't it?
It looks pretty cool!
-
Ah, love it when a thread comes together.
Brilliant church - that wallpaper works a treat, I contemplated sticking individual flints into plaster, but luckily realised I'd be dead before I finished.
Doing something similar (but cack-handedly) so great to see figures I didn't know existed or that I needed, the Mummers are spot on.
-
Nice additions :)
Those ghosts are ace, so simple but beautiful and haunting.

Those are the recent-ish Osprey rules, correct? Might need to pick those up, I do like the other Osprey-published rules I've got.
For small skirmish (4-10 bodies per side) we keep looping back to Pulp Alley, though. The core rules are solid, the character building allows you to do all sorts of weird with minimal flavour text changes, and we've been using them for years so we have a reasonably firm grasp of the basics.
-
Yep - Osprey.
They have a nice war and structure, different ranks for the members so you can have your thugs and your dashing heroes. Loads of sample troop types and a small section for magicians and monsters.

My thinking is these are a rival group of hunters, maybe even the Vatican (as one is a Cardinal)... with the hunter being more of a cunning type supported by troops as opposed to a more experienced group as a whole.

The dead cow (and her basing) is fabulous. And I love the colour scheme on the figures.
Oh Chris, that's a real shame if you have to sell them on because of the size discrepancy :(
I think, unfortunately, whilst it's true that the Bloody Miniatures are (by design) at the large end of so-called 28s, to fit with Bicorne and Renegade, part of the issue is that even within a range, different figures have different height and stature.
The sizing of the Warlord ECW metals is a bit all over the place. Those skirmishing dragoons of theirs are weirdly skinny and slight. Whereas the Bloody dismounted troopers (cos of all the armour, helmets and gear) are the chunkiest of the lot.
If you compare other figures from the two ranges, you can see there's actually not much difference at all (below: Bloody M on the left, Warlord on the right).
You're probably OCD (like me!) when it comes to keeping a consistent basing convention across all the figures in your collection.
But if you weren't (:)), then I might suggest solving the height discrepancy by sticking with slottas for the more diminutive Warlord figures, but going with penny washers or coins for the Bloody Miniatures.
Viz.
Doesn't really address the difference in overall stature, but would certainly make them look more akin on the tabletop :)
Cheers.
Richard

Good points and you know I only compared them to those figures... I’ll have to do a groups comparison....
-
Lovely thread with lots of goodies. :-* :-*
Very well done.
Will follow with interest. :)
-
Good to see you’re back and with a load of freshly painted lovely miniatures!
-
IMO differences of height are no trouble so long as the guns and other gear are near enough in size and appearance.
-
Ok... so finally sat down and did some size comparisons...
http://anevilgiraffe.blogspot.com/2021/05/size-comparisons.html
I have to say, on the whole I feel it’s going well for the Bloody Miniatures... but Angel looks so small and that’s not good...

Long ago I had a white metal kit of a da Vinci tank, bought as a result of an ad in one of the hobby magazines. It was very small scale - smaller than would be suitable for 15mm figures, if memory serves. I can't remember who made it. The thing that attracted me to it was that it had a ship's mast coming out of the top, so was supposedly propelled by the wind. Imagine having to deploy your troops to allow for the direction of the wind, and then having to deal with any change in wind direction during the battle.

Looks a bit like a davinci-machine. Great, very exciting project I follow since a long time and you always keep the flame up and burning

Contrast Snakebite Leather thinned with contrast medium, dry brushed over Foundry Canvas shade and mid.

Excellent work Chris, the wood grain effect is :-*
-
Everyone sees wood grain but I was aiming for leather/canvas over wood (thinking wetting that would be a practical form of defence in a wooden shell), but that obviously didn’t work as everyone sees wood grain lol
