Title: In need of 1945+ natives
Post by: S J Donovan on July 02, 2011, 02:40:30 AM
I want to use my Chindits and Ghurkas against either heavily armed (but no artillery) African or Malaysian natives not Japanese.  I want someplace between 1945 and 1955 where the Brits could be used against insurgents.  I have found a few African and Chinese figs with rifles that I think I can use.  I do not want uniformed insurgents, although a few would be OK for cadre.  Think machineguns in the back of a Model T pickup.

I can't think of any campaign off the top of my head which would suit, I.e. for the Mau-Mau campaign the rebels were fairly poorly equipped but they were also quite irregular in their apperance.

Perhaps something fictional? If you went down the malaysian/far eastern route you could use a mix of poorly equipped Viet cong, Pulp figures Polynesians & Chinese,  Brigade games PNG natives and chinese, some Malayan war CTs, some scruffy looking japanese figures (lots of ex-japanese army equipment floating around) maybe with head swaps, and some copplestone chinese. Give them all a mix of colour schemes and they should look quite irregular on the table.

For Africa, maybe some Emperess abyssians and mixed darkest africa figures with firearms?

Perhaps consider a fictional uprising in India. Things started getting very sticky there circa 1947 and it might offer a wider choice of miniature.

Mau-Mau is a suitable one. Get hold of the "Simba" movie for some inspiration

I am more for fictional than historical, probably using the Mafrica map for locations

So far figures I have looked at include:
Northstar1014 Matabele rebels firing rifles
Tiger's Hereros and Moros with guns
KillerB Geezers four figures in Berets with semi modern guns, good for command or cadre
Pulp PYG20 and PYG24
Brigade games Pacific Island Natives from WW2, Haitian bandits
recon28.com their vietcong look good
Empress miniatures Abyssinians

I think I would like to find more poorly equiped viet cong.

Assault Group has generic militia in their African range.

TAG do some VC with bolt action rifles, PPSh SMGs and MAT 49 SMGs. Baker Co. do a set of 'local force' vc with a mix of WW2 era rfiles and SMGS (and a couple of SKS rifles).

Tiger's Hereros are rough sculpts - I've got 3 packs, and they do the job of pseudo-mau-mau pretty well, but they aren't the prettiest in the world. Some of the Brittania Congo wars range might also be useful - there are some figures there with tribal weapons in more modern clothing, as well as some figures with bolt actions, M14s and SLRs. Grubby Tanks should be carrying the range now.

The old glory Spanish-American war range has a couple of packs which might also be useful

Pulp Figures does a number of sets that would work. Many of his sets have open hands, so you can arm them with any weapons you want. The Yangze pirates would be great.

Thank you v_lazy_dragon I think the TAG Africans (at least 6 packs) will do very well and help make a large (30+ no repeat figs & no Tiger, ca 48 w/Tiger) African force; the viet cong have a couple of packs that will work, but not so many Asians.  Too bad that there are no Britannia models to view on the web.

Scheltrum and Eureka Dyaks would make a nice band of natives, add a few firearms and bobs your uncle

v_lazy_dragon : The Britannia figs look pretty good. At least worth looking into.  Westwind Montagnards are you sure. Nevermind I was only looking at them at Old Glory.  Yes, they will do as well as civilians! and the VC platoon I can convert their weapons back a decade.

Lowtardog : Sheltrum well they could work, but the Eureka VC, while uniformed are quite good and will work very well.

My thanks

Brigade Games also has some Sandanistas that might work.

Lazy Dragon,

those West Wind machete wielding characters look very useful. Can you give directions which pack it is, I cannot find them on the West Wind website?

Hi Traveller - they were from one of the packs in the Gothic horror: zombie line. Also in the pack  were a catholic priest and a Don/Lord/etc type with a flintlock elephant gun. The pack isn't on their site anymore, it was GHZ0006, although I can't remember what tio was called

Might want to rent this 1964 movie "The 7th Dawn" staring Susannah York and Cupucine for some inspiration. It's set in the guerilla warfare in Malaysia post WW2. Not sure how much it has of post 1945 natives, but the movie is highly recommended by a Vietnam veteran friend of mine. Here is a youtube clip that is a slideshow of stills from the movie:

Warrenbruhn : The 7th Dawn looks fairly interesting, I will have to find it somewhere.  As to the Sandinista from Brigade they are really nice figs but they look more like cowboys in ten gallon hats than natives.
Traveller : please tells us what you find out about that Westwind pack.

Response from West Wind:

Thanks for your enquiry & the pic.
The blue denimed sword waver on the left is certainly one of ours. As you say, he is one of GHZ006 which is a pack of 4 figs & is available as priced as the other packs in the GHZ series detailed on our web site. Thanks for bringing that to our attention - we werent aware that GHZ006 was missing from the website! We'll see if our webmasters can address that.
We aren't sure where the other guys originate but while you're on the website take a look at our Amazonian sets which have similar figures. Their reference is GHA004 etc.

Hope this helps & happy hunting : )

Assuring you of our best attention at all times,

Thinking about it, the chap in the vest didn't have a machete when he came - I presumed he was a mis-cast, and replaced it. That might be what threw them on him.
