Title: The Last War Chronicles. 20-28mm Near future project.
Post by: Brummie on July 10, 2011, 10:40:27 PM
The Eagle Soars

Giving my fantasy project 'Policing the Green Frontier' a long break whilst I work on getting some games and more miniatures in (its been delayed by real life) to bring in my Sci-fi/Near future project. I have an expanding collection of 20mm Moderns and 28mm Moderns. At the minute the former is a bit scratchy, since the figures are all painted by me, but the vast majority of vehicles thus far are Pre-painted die casts. The Last War chronicles is meant to cover humanity in a series of events from 2012 to 2021, the start of WW3 and the period after its end, which is a semi-post apocalyptic situation, I based a lot of what happens on research I did for climate change, current economic, political, scientific and strategic issues that could have a long term effect or -might- happen due to past or recent events just to try and give it some hard down to earth background. That of course doesn't mean I know whats going to happen, since predicting the future is impossible!

(These three tanks, though lacking in some details went for only £4 each! Bargain price given most kits and die casts go from £12 - £20!)

U.S.A a short Background

After the slow withdrawal from Afghanistan, the U.S Government by no means believed its involvement with the Middle East was over. In the aftermath of the Arab spring, it was becoming clear a more hostile movement was beginning to form filling the gap the dwindling terrorist organisations responsible for the terrible events in the first years of the 21st century. During the opening months of 2015 with the formation of the vast Islamic Alliance known as the 'Caliphate' U.S bases across the Middle East came under increasing attack, and as military build up near Israel and Turkey began to intensify, America found itself being forced to take action. Furthermore, in the Pacific, tensions were again beginning to arise, as China found itself more at odds with all its neighbours. This soon dragged the U.S further into complications, as its allies such as Japan, Taiwan and South korea, demanded more protection, the States Government found itself stuck between a difficult choice of lending a hand to its long time allies and provoking a military, and even more destructive economic response from the PRC, or take no action and risk losing its allies. Closer to home, natural disasters, debt and conflict along the border with Mexico as drug gangs expanded their reach caused difficulties to rise within the states themselves. As an unknown congressman stated, more troops were being deployed to help keep the peace in the Southern states, than were being deployed to fend of Americas enemies around the globe.

World War 3.

By the time World War 3 broke out in 2021, the U.S was already in a full scale war with the Caliphate, powerful South American Drug Warlords and a new war in North Korea as the Communist regime fought Revolutionary forces formed during the Pro-unification Joseon Rebellion. With forces quickly mobilised to fight against an expansive China, the U.S found itself stretched, and bordering being utterly penniless facing a grand emergency on an unseen scale as the Chinese state attempted to draw on U.S debts and close its investments in that country. As war with China practically closed of all trade in the pacific, every day American lives soon began to feel the brunt, food shortages, low fuel supplies and massive loss of life due to the war effort soon pushed the U.S to the brink. As debt that had started since the Afghan war and economic hardship piled on to even more enormous amounts, the situation dawned on many that a quit exit strategy had to be achieved, before the land of the free was consumed by the stresses of a faulty economy and costly war. By 2024 the U.S hurried production for a new weapon called 'Mark V', one that would help avoid nuclear war (and ultimately a dooms day scenario) but be a decisive strike. Things went even more pear shaped, when the E.U suffering from mass starvation and resource shortages, declared war on Russia, and with a large force, launched an offensive to gain control of oil rich siberia and the fertile western Russian lands. The U.S balked at this, and withdrew its support for the E.U. Russia had become a mutual ally after its Eastern regions had been invaded by the PRC, attacks by the E.U damaged the relationship, and the U.S was finding itself looking at a new frontline against a new foe. By the year 2028 with the war going against them, the U.S Government ordered the first prototype weapon 'Mark V' to be tested against the PRC mainland. Without fully understanding what they were to unleash, the Bomb was dropped on a small town by a long range bomber sowing the first seeds of a fatal virus amongst the Chinese population, and eventually beyond.

Two years on, with the war finally coming to a close the U.S was left to face the damage the nine year conflict had caused back home, growing unrest, fears the Mark V virus would make an appearance on the homeland and sightings of strange events in the expanding wilderness would all soon accumulate into the final blow that would mark the end of the United States many had come to either love or hate.

Other factions, upcoming, tried to just keep with a short overview of the U.S, as more factions and backgrounds are added hopefully things make more sense!

Caliphate will be represented by Elheims Iraqi and Generic Middle East types, since they are pretty decent figs and easy to get hold of (the guy who makes them lives just down the road!!!) I can't find any easily purchaseable middle east insurgent 20mm types though, and although Elheim does do some Afghan types, they will be used for tribal factions ranging across Yemen, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and the Chinese Province of East Turkmenistan (or Xinjiang I think... ???).

I'll be showing of the current Caliphate force tomorrow when time permits! Its a lot bigger rest assured on that! (After all it is up against the U.S so it needs to be!)

However, all figures so far are from Elheim, tanks, Planes, Helicopters etc (diecast) are from Dragon, Easykit, Hobby master or Corgi, Kits are from Zvezda (Russian army anyhow, but yet to get infantry for them!) Revell or Italieri. Also have some Resins from S&S but currently none in the U.S force!
One company I have no clue on is the cheap die cast vehicles such as those three diecasts.

I have seen wartime, they look nice but the range is very limited, I like their Aussies and plan to get some for the Commonwealth Armed forces. Elheim said he plans to do some ultra Modern Russians, atm he only does 1980s, but at 20mm scale you can easily use them as like Russian reserve forces, Near abroad troops or some of the garrisons that don't capture much attention.

Under fire miniatures produce a very nice line of Ultra Modern Russians you can use for the Chechen wars, Georgian wars etc, their VERY detailed, a bit like Empress but in 20mm, they are a tiny bit taller than elheims but when on the table its not that noticeable.

Nice collection. Where did you get the A-10 ?  :D you know, I've not so much planes.... I need more !  ;D

Sad the AAV7A1 isn't 28mm !

The three cheap diecast you speak about are the Abrams ones ? They may be Altaya (as are the planes you asked me for in my topic).

Thanks! The A-10 is from Hobbymaster, they do them in two sorts, that one, and one in Green camo, Easy models does a few dead cheap too. I'll look up Altaya, see what I can drag out of them  :D.

As for the AAV7A1, I don't even think they do them in 20mm anymore let alone 28mm, which is a mighty shame!

Franklin Mint/Armour collection do do a A10 in 1:50 scale, as well as most other modern planes... and WW2 ones as well.... And are THE BEST planes you could ever have for gaming...

As for the Amtracs/AAV's, S&S do a nice 28mm resin one... but there is some debate as to which version/date it is,  7A1 etc etc ... but either way, cover it in stowage and its great... if a tad on the small side if using Black Scorpian/tAG minis...

Will be using Red Star and Empress for 28mm figures so if I delve into 28mm vehicles I doubt there will be too many scale issues!

Very nice, not really my cup of tea, but very cool all the same. I do like to see future that isn't far future nor very far fetched as it is a nice change of pace. Also killer digital camo

@Bagshot: Will check those out! My A10 is 1/72nd so its pretty big on a battlefield!
@Stooge: Thanks! As for the camo, doing proper digital was just too painful, so I just painted them grey and highlighted it, if it was 28mm I'd give it a proper shot, but on 20mm its just nigh impossible. Was a quick paint job, to skip the usual dramatics with having so many to do! Plus it may start to get far fetched when the post war stuff comes to play!

The Army so far!

The Black Berets, The Caliphates Land 'elite' whether these troops are to standards of their elite counterparts across the world from USMC, SAS or the Spetznaz is questionable, but their will to fight to the death and lack of fear makes them a trouble on the battlefield!

Some figs need a bit of touching up on the bases! These Caliphate troops and their ride (an amphibious version of the BRDM??? Can't think for the life of me what its called!).

This was apparently the first ever 'APC' the Sovs ever created, these vehicles were littered all over the Middle East, and are still used well into the 21st century, the vast majority are used as police or reserve vehicles, and are often deemed as pretty outdated, however if it works, then it can be used!

The Caliphate purchased and put together a great number of these outdated (if not very famous) MiGs as training and reserve jets, during the Wars, they were often seen as light aerial support, and tasked to take down enemy Helicopter gunships, or attack supply jets, a number retained the Red Star, these being specifically bought of Russia's near abroad states such as Kazakhstan and in some cases retaining mercenary pilots from those states.

The T-72 was considered outdated long before the 21st century began, however, even by 2021, these tanks were still in action and still plentiful in the Middle East and Africa. Although the U.A.E and its wealthy research institutions supported by the Caliphate managed to create upgrades to the T-72 creating the C-50, believed to be a match for the Chinese Type 99, produced in fairly substantial numbers Iran and some small industries in Syria (which were routinely bombed by Israel) However, the vast majority of T-72s remained mostly unchanged, but evaded being made a reserve tank like the T-55 and its variants.

More T-72s (And helicopter) which of those three tanks is the odd one out?

The most popular Helicopter Gunship for the Caliphate, unfortunately Russia had a habit of selling of the Second hand ones, causing a multitude of problems with the Caliphates own Helicopter fleet, by 2021, the Caliphate had formed mercenary battalions (most of them of Russian or Eastern European origin) who had their own far more advanced versions!

After the fall of the U.A.E a large number of the states Leclerc Battle tanks remained in good condition. Unfortunately for everybody else, that meant that the Caliphate had access to one of the most advanced Battle tanks in the world, these formed the cherry on top of the Caliphates elite tank battalions, and were considered better than the Leopard 1 A4s acquired by previous Governments, and slightly better than the export Abrams taken from the Egyptian army when it joined the Caliphate. The Iranian Zulfiqar which had previously made it to the Elite battalions was down graded to the C-50 status.

A T-72 gets a lucky shot of on an Italien Ariete during the Desert fighting in Egypt, a Italian brigade partook in the fighting, in a drive to close of the border with Libya before the Caliphate 14th Egyptian Army could attack the Libyan oil fields.

Caliphate soldiers move up to secure the Ariete wreck, being cautious in case of armed survivors!

On the outskirts of Luxor, Southern Egypt, near a warehouse, a combined force of British and American special forces with German armoured support attempt to hold of another wave of Caliphate Elite troops after the position being prepped by the Royal Artillery regiment comes under intense Aerial and Artillery bombardment.

God has promised those of you who have attained to faith and do righteous deeds that, of a certainty, He will make them Khulifa on earth, even as He caused [some of] those who lived before them to become Khulifa; and that, of a certainty, He will firmly establish for them the religion which He has been pleased to bestow on them; and that, of a certainty, He will cause their erstwhile state of fear to be replaced by a sense of security [seeing that] they worship Me [alone], not ascribing divine powers to aught beside Me. But all who, after [having understood] this, choose to deny the truth – it is they, they who are truly iniquitous!" [24:55] (Surah Al-Nur, Verse 55)

The Caliphate often referred to as the Terror of the Middle East, formed under the shadow of a vast sand storm, the events of 2015 would forever remain within the memories of those who witnessed, supported and fought the Great Caliphate. Considered to be the final result of the Arab spring, the Caliphate was originally intended to form a great alliance of muslim nations that would ensure the freedom of those peoples who were considered faithful to Islam, and a terrible adversary to the heathen nations that surrounded it. Violently throwing of the old dictatorships and monarchies, in a series of rebellions which began in the closing months of 2010 and ultimately ended by December 2014, the Caliphate quickly and in most cases violently spread from its hidden H.Q in the middle of the Saudi desert, consuming territory until its borders met Turkey, the caucasus, Libya, Southern Sudan and Afghanistan. Iran considered to be one of the prime leaders soon counted itself out as the leading state amongst the newly formed 'federation' and soon Tehran was named capital. Steps were taken to quickly unify all the armed forces of the New state with varying degrees of success, new laws were passed, and at first the caliphate presented a very liberal attitude to all those who lived within its boundaries. 'Democracy' was introduced, however, all such talk of independence (though at the time very little) was banned on pain of death, and all nationalist parties that did not support the Caliphate quickly vanished into the vast Saudi desert.
Conflict quickly arose with such rapid expansion, in Iraq, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, the Governments quickly came to oppose handing power to a more central Government in Tehran, backed up by U.S bases in their states, and others in neighbouring Saudi Arabia, the Caliphate Government quickly ordered its budding army to prepare to invade and suppress the wayward countries, whilst various insurgent cells, alongside a growing terrorist organisation were encouraged to carry out covert operations against western influences in the Middle East. By March 2015, the Iranian Caliphate 1st Army invaded Iraq, crushing the mild resistance from Government forces, and after a costly assault, forced the U.S and Allied forces to withdraw into Kuwait. In the U.A.E Insurgents stormed Government buildings with various degrees of success, before a Caliphate Saudi tank regiment, by passing U.S bases in Arabia, advanced on the capital, after a week long battle along the outskirts of the city, the U.A.E surrendered. The U.S forces stationed in Saudi Arabia, began to withdraw as other numerous Caliphate forces closed in: outnumbered, and outgunned, the Pentagon felt it had no choice to get its people out. The Caliphate soon found itself fending of a myriad of attacks, as Israel, Kuwaiti, Free Arabian, U.S and even British Air and Naval forces began bombarding key areas across the Middle East. The U.S forces safely arrived in Kuwait, having met little resistance, a week later, the Caliphate Government ordered a general assault on the small country, and after weeks of fighting, the Government in Kuwait surrendered, handing power over to the Caliphate and demanding all western forces to leave. The U.S and its allies complied, and rapidly left the Middle East to its own devices. By 2016 the entire Middle East was under Caliphate control after Oman and Yemen caved in under pressure, Military reforms were introduced and soon the Caliphate was beginning to look like an extremely deadly foe. In 2017, Tehran ordered that Israel should be surrounded after fighting intensified, provoking the E.U and the U.S to take action, again war broke out, as the British in Cyprus, alongside a task force from Italy, the U.S, France and Germany launched a strike against the Caliphates largest supplier of fresh water - the river Nile in Egypt. The Caliphate realised the Wests aims were to cut of the only reliable fresh water supply they had, as of the end of 2012 all underground water reserves had practically dried up across much of the Middle East. And it was essential to ensure peace amongst troublesome tribes of Bedouins or tribes in Yemen or Northern Iran, who consistently fought the Caliphate for various reasons.

After a year of fighting, and much of Egypt occupied by Western forces, the Caliphate slowly withdrew pressure from Israel, and instead, created a line of fortifications around the border with the Jewish state. Allied forces withdrew, and after a month of suppressing outbreaks of lawless violence, Egypt was once again under full Caliphate control.

The Caliphate since then has been constantly in a state of fluctuation between Cold and Hot wars between its neighbours, as well as its western and Eastern foes. It was discovered during the 2017 Egyptian invasion that the Caliphate had laid out plans to control all of North Africa, and attempt to subdue Somalia. It had been encouraging piracy across the world, and was linked to arming various jihadist groups in the Caucasus, Pakistan, China and Indonesia. The Caliphate did until 2020, have very good relations with the Chinese PRC, who supplied the Caliphate with advanced arms (since the weaponry captured during the Caliphate War of 2015 of Western Origin had either been blown up or broken down) and felt the relationship essential to keep open the newly built railway network along the Ancient spice trade routes, as well as the Suez. All that changed during the Crescent moon rebellion of 2019 when a Jihadist army formed in the Chinese province of Xinjiang soon made itself known to be a puppet of the Caliphate Agenda. The Caliphate became self-reliant, sly, and most of all effective. Its neighbours began to actively arm themselves against it, and the old animosity between Europe and Russia faded in the wake of increased aggression. However do not be foolish to think the Caliphate represents all of the Islamic peoples. During 2018, an event left in the dark as the worlds media turned their attention to the 'Katrina in the Med' a vast destructive storm that tore through southern France, a loose alliance of clans from Waziristan, through Afghanistan to the mountains of Tajikistan and of to Northern Iran formed a coalition opposed to the Caliphate, in Yemen, Tribes actively sought to undermine the local authorities, and the Kurds continued their war for an independent state.

World War 3

From 2021 onwards the Caliphate enjoyed unparalleled access to almost every major theatre of war during the Nine year World War. For the Caliphate however the war had truly started since its very formation, since all that changed was the intensifying of the conflict (though there was nothing easy about the Caliphate war and Strike on Egypt) In the year 2019, the Caliphate was already in a series of small scale wars with Great Britain, who from its bases in Cyprus, commenced large raids against the Islamic Empire. Border skirmishes with Turkey, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan with Georgia and South Sudan supported by U.S forces also adding to the aggro (Northern Sudan became a part of the Caliphate, which greatly annoyed Chinese and Western oil industries) were fairly common. But by 2022, the Caliphates greatest adversaries in the form of the U.S and China were at war and soon the forces opposing them were starting to weaken as fighting gripped much of the world. Furthermore, Britain which had declared neutrality had collapsed into Civil war by this stage, and its bases in Cyprus were thus rendered useless. Tehran thus ordered a great surge, as much for environmental as well as political reasons. Much unknown to the rest of the world, the vast deserts and dry lands that covered the Middle East and the Sahara were quickly expanding at a damaging rate, evaporating fresh water supplies and killing of crops and livestock. By 2023, the Caliphate invaded Afghanistan, coming into direct conflict with the tribes, the Government and the Chinese, it soon unleashed devastating attacks on Turkey and the Caucasus, drawing the attention of Europe which quickly sent its forces to be rid of the Caliphate invaders. In Africa, the Caliphate Forces began raiding bordering states, taking supplies. Tehran here however decided that logistically it only had enough spare resources to support a campaign to capture sections of the nile running outside its zone of control such as Souther Sudan and the Blue nile in Ethiopia, but it would be unable to fully conquer those states completely. Demands to invade Libya were postponed and violent battles between conventional and insurgent troops on either side took place. Tehran decided the best possible course of action was insurgency, and soon began prompting extremist groups to fight for its cause, forming The African Jihadist Corps, lead by Somalian warlords to old Hamas or Palestinian Liberation Army members. They soon formed an effective force against state Governments, tribes and warlords, and eventually found themselves at odds with the Chinese corporate funded African Liberation Army, or its opposite number the Western alternative Free African States Volunteer Force, and numerous other sorts.
By 2026 Little to no progress was being made however on either front, and forces were diverted to stage a large invasion of Libya and Ethiopia with A.J.C support, but was ultimately bogged down. By 2027, Tehran ordered Israel to be blockaded by a large fleet to stop Arms and aid supplies entering the besieged country in preparation for a invasion, the fleet proved logistically unsustainable, and just as soon as it reached breaking point, was hit by a Israeli Air and Naval forces, leading to a humiliating defeat, the invasion was called of when Israel threatened to go Nuclear after a few brief costly campaigns around the border regions. By 2029, the civil war in Britain was over, and the new government proposed the formation of the 'New Commonwealth' a Expeditionary force from South Africa, supplemented by British and Canadian Volunteer brigades as well as elements of the Mercenary company Blackwater landed in Ethiopia, forcing the Caliphate to withdraw. Tehran ordered an all out withdrawal from afghanistan when rumours of a plague from China was said to be spreading across the border killing of the Chinese forces and Afghanistan's natives with ease.

Wars End and the coming of the Jinn.
[/u]

By 2030, Tehran was facing a water shortage crisis, but was soon greeted with the news the war was over, and in a seemingly transformed world, with entire states wiped of the map. By 2031 internal strife caused the Caliphate to close all its borders, then without warning, a sand storm covers the Iraqi city of Basra and the Iranian city of Ahvaz, survivors report an unnatural glow to the sand storm as it roles in before sightings of strange creatures now haunting the alley ways and abandoned houses of the buried cities. The Caliphate Government becomes divided, one side claiming it is the arrival of the Jinn, whilst the other utterly dismissive of such sightings calling it the tales of scared human beings. Either way, thus far no one has thought to have ventured into the region to understand what is truly going on, since the area has now become a hot spot for violent sand storms.

Awesome caliphate army btw. Your troops remind me of Chinese PLA though. I suppose its the russian tech.

There are AAV7's in 28mm available.  :-)

Thanks for the comments by the way guys, just shifting through what else I could actually stick on here, still painting through my British Army, and my German Army needs some infantry and battle tanks (which I can both get fairly easy).

Talking of PLA, S&S do some which will be fantastic, just need some modern 20mm Indian Army as one of the main opposition sorts!!

Just watched Battle: Los Angeles: I am really hoping someone makes some 20mm aliens of a respectable nature (no greys or things similar too) Elheim informed me he was slooowly going down that route, but anyone know of anything else?

I was using revell plastics, but have really gone of using them (probably get given to my cousin) will more than likely be replacing them with S&S Germans, which look very good and I am told would more than fit size wise. In fact looking at S&S stuff I will be using all his stuff for a PLA force and a Dutch Force now he has made infantry for it. I'd like someone to do 20mm Modern Swedes and Norwegians, Finns etc for Arctic war with Russia.

As for aliens, I found no 20mm stuff, however I can put up links to companies that make 15mm aliens big enough to be considered 20mm if that helps.

Decided I'd list down all Manufacturers that produce models that can be used for 20mm Wargaming (or collecting etc) As well as some stuff that may possibly be used for 20mm sci fi Wargaming, will list a few sites that sell a collection of the stuff too...

20mm Moderns

http://elhiemfigures.com/ - The one we all know about, producing a wide range of awesome 20mm figs you can use for a number of scenarios, so far mostly Middle Eastern based, Cold War with some African and Israeli stuff. Produces some characterful sets in the form of pulp fiction, some sci fi bits, but most of all Zombies!!!

http://www.underfireminiatures.com/ - Some of the best sculpts around in 20mm, again mostly Afghanistan/Iraqi campaign based troops, some ultra modern Brits in osprey, do alot of South African wars (selous scouts etc) WW2 stuff. Best of all however, the manufacturer has a sizeable range of ultra modern Russians, and plans to do some Ultra modern Georgians (which can effectively be used for a number of modern forces). May be slightly taller than other 20mm figures, but not by much.

http://sandsmodels.com/ - Need to email these guys to get a full listing, but they produce modern vehicles you practically won't find anywhere else on the market (including Patria vehicles, the CV series etc for Scandinavian states) They also do (and this company is the only company out there to do this) Modern Chinese PLA Infantry and vehicles. However they also produce German, Dutch and Afghan troops!

http://www.stonewallfigures.co.uk/ - Mostly World War 2 20mm figures, they do however produce some Iraq war U.S troops, but also produce a small range of Northern Ireland/Urban chaos styled figures and 1980s Afghan War types.

http://www.rhmodels.com/ - Another company that produces a wide range of stuff, however I find these to be difficult to get your hands on outside of shows (and not to my tastes I might add) but the variety is quite extensive! Produce Russians as well!

http://www.wartimeminiatures.com.au/ - Only company to do some Modern Australian forces, they also do some Russians, range appears limited but they are very good!

When it comes to diecast or kits, I find it very difficult to actually find the sites of the producers but here are a list of companies that can provide some stuff.
http://www.italeri.com/ - Imo Best kits around, they even do a Modern Italien Attack Helicopter
http://www.revell.com/
http://www.icm.com.ua/ - Mostly produce Russian WW2 stuff, but they do make a lot of Cold War era vehicles, they are not as good as Italieri, but they produce stuff many others don't. Worth a shot
Dragon Military Diecasts - Very detailed but damned expensive.
Altaya - Not as heavily detailed as Dragon stuff but they produce a bigger variety, may be hard to get hold of but also a lot cheaper if found in stores, a bit more expensive on the web!!

Sci fi 20mm Stuff

http://thesceneuk.com/index.php main_page=product_info&cPath=16_91&products_id=553

These Minis are 21mm in height, as you can see perfect 20mm troopers for a sort of terminator styled army!

http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/#15mmscifi

Khuarsan are currently going through a phase of rearranging their stuff, however, some of their aliens (like the Garm) are big enough to fit into 20mm wargames, there is a race they do which is apparently 25mm in height, but they have been taken of the list for now.

http://www.micropanzer.com/forum/index.php?topic=28.0 - Though these are only in the making (they are coming out some time this fall, Micropanzers new alien race is apparently big enough for 20mm wargaming (they are around 20mm in scale I heard) and look pretty darn awesome at that

***EDIT*** the first link just takes people straight to the home page site, not the figs, the figs are the large Robots on the bottom left hand corner with product code HAD002 called heavy androids they are 21mm ***EDIT***

Decided to throw my 28mm stuff into the mix. These are for more squad based, less expansive battles between elite forces of the various sections. These were arguably some of the first miniatures I actually seriously started of with the hobby on. So the paint job is here and there! Minis are from Red Star.

Last War Chronicles: Elite forces.

Between Warriors and Bears

The Russian Spetsnaz has earned some renown around the world, however whether this fame has come from true acts and facts or mere fairy tales (fairy tales and myths being a dominant theme of the 20th to 21st century) what has not been questioned is their potential to cause an ever increasing amount of aggravation against the enemy. None more so than the Alfa Group. Specially trained to not only counter sabotage, insurgent and terrorist activities, they themselves are more than capable of conducting a number of destructive operations against their enemies. Even before the war, Afla group like much of the various Russian Special forces groups were battle hardened. By the time war broke out, these troops were dealing more pain than they themselves were enduring, and were arguably, the force that rescued the Russian Federation from complete collapse.

The Spetsnaz in the years leading up to the war were hard pressed to handle the ever increasing threats to the Russian Federation, both within, and without. In the year 2012, it was clear that the fighting in the North Caucasus was in no way going to calm down. However, as fighting in this often volatile region, between the Federation, rebellious groups from Chechens, Jihadists, Ethnic nationalists to the Regional power of Georgia increased, Alfa and other specialist groups found themselves hard pressed and were nearly torn apart by rising political and ethnic tensions inside Russia. In order to survive, Alfa, and much of the Spetsnaz themselves consolidated a form of identity or belonging to their unit not uncommon amongst fighting forces around the world. Soon becoming an active player in the battle between the Russian Nationalist/Fascist movement, Ethnic Nationalists, Communists and Government supporters, Alfa often switched sides in order to survive often at odds with fellow Russian military units.
By 2016, the coming of the Caliphate drew Alfa away from the storm brewing in its home territory, as Russia came close to the brink of civil war, the Kremlin ordered those units not loyal to its corrupt cause to the near abroad to conduct operations against raiding Tribes and Caliphate operatives. By 2017, Alfa found itself in South America again placed out of reach and out of mind, guarding, training and fighting various groups, from Governments, to terrorist organisations, drug cartels and more, in the interest of a Government back home, slowly coming under the control of a vast Crime cartel. However, with the start of the Third world war some years later, Alfa would be permanently changed by the appearance of one of its newest members. Anatoli Titov born and raised in the town of Novodvinsk placed on the edges of Siberia. It would be this rough, aspiring individual, who would come to walk the footsteps of the Russian states old Soviet heroes, and be one amongst many to save a crumbling nation. His ideals were to become dominant amongst many of the newer members of Alfa during the war.

World War 3

When China declared war against Russia, in a surprise assault on its Eastern territories, Alfa was one of the first on the scene, outmanned, outgunned, and supported by an army that was ill equipped and unprepared for such an assault, Alfa found itself clinging to survival, fighting of Hordes of PLA forces that split across the border in waves.
The fighting was fierce, none more so than in the city of Khabarovsk, which soon replaced Stalingrad as one of the worlds most bloodiest battles. Both sides fought fanatically, Russia to maintain its home ground, and the Chinese to escape the vast expanse of toxic death behind them, created through years of industrial expansion. Alfa became connected to the places in which they fought, from the valleys and plains of the East, to the vast mongolian desert, and the wind swept icy cold wastelands of the far north. Losing men at every turn, finally the Russian Armed forces managed to draw a line in the sand, bogging down and weakening the invading forces watering them down until they could no longer afford to take ground. This temporary relief ensured that the occupants of the East narrowly missed nuclear oblivion, the Kremlin becoming desperate as its Eastern forces were pushed to breaking point.
The desperation within the Kremlin however would none other than bring all of Russia to war. Whilst most of Russia's inner turmoil had been reduced by the threat of outside invasion, to the East, to the West, a new threat grew.
In the year 2025 the Kremlin stretched in its war effort against the Chinese, and attempting to gain the favour of its otherwise rebellious subjects, ordered that all grain exports to Europe, the Far east (save for India its ally) to be put on hold and funnelled to the East and to the frontline against numerous foes in the near abroad. Soon afterwards, the Kremlin demanded that all gas and oil exports to all outside states be shut of, as with all natural resources. The result was catastrophic.
Less than a month after the order had been fulfilled, the E.U, demanded that a Coalition of its states, headed by Germany invade and occupy Russia's western and most productive regions. Hastily Europe's armies were mobilised, and soon launched a ferocious Blitzkrieg against the Federation. However, Russia was this time, not going to allow itself to be unprepared for the event of another attack by another neighbouring state. Its Western forces had already mobilised, and were merely looking East, Alfa had been withdrawn from the Chinese front, and placed on the border with Finland, its mission top secret to all but the highest members of Russia's military.
As the rumbling thunder of Leapord and Leclerc tanks rolled across the lightly guarded Russian border, the Western defense forces guns simply turned to face the new enemy, and within a week, the two sides were at a stalemate outside Moscow.
As Europe poured its all against the Russian forces on the mainland. Alfa, and a large contingent of Russian troops moved into Finland, under the cover of a large aerial and artillery bombardment. Alfa soon infiltrated a number of Finnish defensive spots, and after fierce fighting, Helsinki was surrounded and besieged, with those Finnish forces unable to reach the capital, left to withdraw into the north, to fight a sporadic series of battles, with little effect.
During 2026, Alfa was ordered to spearhead the invasion of Sweden, the Spetsnaz group was ordered specifically to hold the city ransom and, with the supporting Russian force, use it to create a hopping point onto mainland Europe. Anatoli, and a large number of Alfa voiced their disapproval against the move, coming to the conclusion that such a move would break the western defences stretching them beyond a point where they could efficiently take on the European invaders. Nevertheless, the Kremlin demanded that either its plans be carried out, or Alfa and its members would be hunted down and killed as traitors. To support the gesture, droves of Nationalist thugs, were marched into occupied Finland to keep the army in check, Mercenaries and Fanatics armed to the teeth with a wide array of weaponry followed the every move of their military counterparts, leading to outbreaks of violence and sometimes death. Atrocities by the bluntly named Death Battalions became widespread, with little thought as to who would be targeted.
Then in the opening months of 2027, the Russian Baltic fleet, having raided across much of the Baltic coast, carried Alfa and the invading forces to their destination, tearing through the ice choked waters they soon came into view of the city of Stockholm. The Cities defenders had come to be reinforced by contingents from Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Finnish troops and on that fateful day, the exiled British army. Alfa were the first to dismount and press forwards trudging over sea ice, to end the countries renowned ability to have never fought a war since the 1800s.
Alfa would remain in Sweden until Russia's withdrawal in 2030, the campaign having left only a handful of Alfas members alive. Upon returning home, they were rounded up by the KGB and sent to a reopened Gulag in Siberia on the grounds of having not fought hard enough for the motherland. As Anatoli and his comrades plotted their escape, they were completely unaware of the terrible virus that had infiltrated their overcrowded camp in the form of Chinese POWs, nor the gnashing of teeth, and empty groans that followed in its wake.

Going back to the 20mm side of things for a bit, here is one of the strange (but not the strangest) factions that will turn up, and is perhaps the most important to the storyline. (And note everything before 2011 is based on or are real events, just to add some realism and depth to 'future' ones). Hopefully this one is not too nuts as there is lots to include, and its late at night so might be a bit crazy.

The Sphere of Creation

The economic downfall offset during the late 00s, had a radical effect on Space science and exploration. Yet despite the cuts to Nasa, the limited technology (if not growing tech) of Russia, China and India the only department which was beginning to make swift advancements in Space faring technology was Europe, and none other than a combination of British independent firms working with international partners on a commercial basis. However, science as a whole came to be persecuted and punished, and not just on an economic scale. Signs of agitation and general contempt for the scientific community first seemed to develop in Great Britain and the U.S, and slowly started to spread into other Western states. In the year 2013 much to the surprise of China and India: two nations who had relied on co-operation with the West to develop their own technology they soon found their old partners vanishing into the cracks of a society that was looking to anything to blame for the growing danger which presented itself in the form of Climate change.
Indeed, although the 'Space' community had little to do with the science of climate change, none the less, when a hurricane half the size of Katrina decimated southern France and Middle Italy, they too along with other sections became the targets of a strange Terrorist styled Cult.
However that is not to say that the entire community vanished, many governments quickly implemented defence schemes, and soon isolated towns whose very objective was to continue developing new energy or space technology were formed, but for the most part, these were funded, if not completely influenced by big businesses. The sole idea being technology for money, whether this be robotics, weapons, space technology to GM crops and renewables.
This though in some places made things worse, the U.K in the grip of civil unrest by the year 2014 had its Central Government in London, caught between a terrific mess of groups, from English Nationalists, to Scottish separatist socialists or nationalists, to British Nationalists or Unionists and Irish Republicans, Armed gangs of criminals and religious fanatics, droves of angry unemployed Welshmen, but none were so deadly and perhaps as stubborn as a wave of Socialist youngsters, mislead by a gang of overly-violent 'communists'. And by no means did these people take any kind consideration to anyone who was employed by big corporations and businesses, even if it was the only way to survive a radically changing world. Those British scientists born and bred on their home island had no choice to flee, but it became clear that they were prisoners, not men and women working for a living and for a passion. Their corporate masters had no desire to see them leave. On mainland Europe things were far more calmer politically, but a mild layer of distrust was still building up, to many people, ignorant of what warnings had been given before, the terrible Hurricane Europe proved in their minds proof that scientists were just as corrupt as politicians.
When a number of devastating attacks on scientists across Europe shattered any hopes of salvaging that historically peaceful existence, plans were quickly devised to escape. The escape was limited in what it achieved, for only a handful of top scientists escaped the mayhem, others were captured, some killed. The end result was a Europe more than willing to press gang any form of talent into Prison labs, for the sake of advancement in a coming storm.

No one knew what happened to these escapees, a number of Governments claimed that many had defected to China, which was showing signs of increased military aggression, others claimed they had fled to the U.S (which the American authorities constantly denied, but never helped by refusing to pursue arrest warrants of such individuals on U.S soil) MI6 tracked down some links to Fiji and the Falklands, whilst a French Government agency reported it had captured a minor escapee who was apparently doing 'business' in Dubai. None of these links produced fruit though, and by 2016, the world was more concerned with fighting the Caliphate and Chinese Military and economic attacks. The Scientific community had been forcefully torn asunder, and would be more so by the war, but in the years leading up to 2021, two distinct groups would form, that would forever change the world.

S.A.T.D

Science and Aerospace Technology Development Unit was set up in the mid-late 2020s. During the escape, many had fled to the U.S, meeting up with sympathetic and some extremely wealthy beings from North and South America and even other self-exiled Europeans. Others had escaped to Japan, to quickly form deals with the Japanese government, deals which for the most part never came to be for various reasons. After a few months of debates and planning, the Escapees formed a Coalition with their sympathisers known as the 'Sphere of Creation', disguised as a minor branch of a large company, the Sphere members soon fled to Greenland, setting up base on an isolated fjord. Although at first rather poor and under funded, the Sphere managed to create an advanced base, with the outbreak of 2021, many of their sympathisers soon came to reside with them, increasing funding, and more importantly:Protection.
By 2024 a port was built to ensure an easy income of supplies, a year later, a small private army was formed, a unit of highly skilled troops from around the world, top equipment was bought or developed. Soon in the summer months of 2026 the Sphere made a discover that quickly prompted it to create S.A.T.D, a unit primarily designed to handle Space technology and advanced weaponry. The discovery was none other than S.A.T.Y.R.

S.A.T.Y.R

What S.A.T.Y.R stands for is unknown, but what it is, is well known to many a secret agency across the globe, including the Sphere of Creation. S.A.T.Y.R is an alliance of Corporations set up in 2013, big businesses and large tech industries, who before the war, arguably had more influence and more control over what went on in the world than any Government. What makes S.A.T.Y.R stand out though in comparison to other minor corporation alliances or big industries like Microsoft was what it did. Becoming one of the major investors and suppliers of fossil fuels, and the biggest group of funders for space and weapons tech, S.A.T.Y.R devised a plan to expand upon a Russian project to attempt to discover and extract natural elements such as Iron or nuclear materials from other outside objects: for the most part, asteroids, or natural floating space debris. Having developed a competitor to the 2011 space ship prototype 'Skylon' a vessel capable of taking of and landing like a plane with little trouble entering space, S.A.T.Y.R poured money into the development of even more advanced space faring vessels. When it was devised that it would be cheaper and easier to use robots to extract minerals, they soon began a rapid project into the creation of EN-4 which would become the second humanoid styled robot to enter space (the first having had worked on the ISS in 2010) the development was so rapid, and so unique in comparison to the slow nature of such complicated projects, S.A.T.Y.R did all within its power to keep the project secret, for fear that if word got out, it would spark competition that could ruin markets and perhaps potentially outrun S.A.T.Y.Rs own progress. By 2020, despite the persecution of scientists in Europe, S.A.T.Y.R had kept its personal out of harms way, moved to the U.S, and had already formed links with Nasa and the U.S military, who came to blindly fund S.A.T.Y.Rs project with little clue as to what was going on. In 2021, S.A.T.Y.R had completed and combined both its primary projects, the mission was quickly put into action, and despite increased space rubbish caused by the destruction of various satellites in the opening shots of the war, S.A.T.Y.R launched the vessel 'New Dawn' into space, a ship many claimed was far ahead of its time.
For three years 'New Dawn' floated about the solar system, landing on various chunks of rock, careful as not to later their route towards Earth, with its crew of en-4s it would mine what it could find, and move on. It was when New Dawn was to return home with its cargo that something happened. In the official report, it was claimed a malfunction was caused when 'New Dawn' passed through a high radiation zone around Jupiter and probably sucked into the orbit of numerous floating objects and destroyed. The truth was discovered much later, when the Spheres first probe upon nearing Jupiter's Moon Europa in 2026, took images of a strange square like shadow on the smooth surface of the small globe. After a lot of work on the fuzzy photos, followed by a difficult period of re-arranging the probes route, they discovered that S.A.T.Y.Rs creation had not been destroyed, but it had definitely undergone some form of malfunction, and had to the Spheres members perhaps reverted back to previous orders and made more advanced steps in extracting resources. The shadowed square was none other than an unusually large liquid pump, the 'New Dawn' vessel pictured nearby in some icy crater.
It was assumed that the EN-4s were stranded, perhaps frozen over if they exposed themselves to the immense freeze of space. All in all they couldn't have survived long.
That assumption however was short lived when the probe took more photographs of similar structures, only to lose contact and vanish upon nearing an orbit overlooking a very large building. It was to great a surprise for Nasa back in the U.S on night shift at a new Space Radiation Research and Measurement centre recorded a sudden surge of radioactivity over above normal levels in space at a similar location to where the probe was lost, levels that could only be explained in the case of a detonation of a nuclear bomb.

Many thanks!

I have been working away for the past two days to create a blog with the stuff I have put here and more I will be updating it will all the stuff I have so far, of course, most of what will be on there the majority of you will have already seen, but on Workbench page you should find some stuff that has yet to find an army to enlist in yet or a purpose! Been slightly slowed down a bit by some virus or a hacker getting inside my comp, so been cleaning that up, but will be adding more as I go. Of course I am not abandoning the forum, when armies have been put together and have their background story I will be sticking them up here first!

Here is the link...

Thought I'd post and say that I have posted (its incomplete but it will take a few days to actually finish) the perhaps longest page that exists on my extremely young blog so far, there are no minis to back this one up just fluff, but it is the Collapse of the U.K and the Civil war, so far only the first rebellion is covered, i haven't actually written anything about the civil war which follows. Its been a bit bumpy fitting it together so if you think something could use a bit of an amendment do say so!

Kick starting my thread again  :D

Tank is Britannia Miniatures, Figures are from Elhiems Iraqi range and are also newly finished (or rather spruced up, i've begin adding a lot more to my older figures!) ready to do battle against the Infidel, and traitorous non-revolutionaries!!

The Khalid or Chieftain MBT currently see's service in Iran and Jordan, recently these vehicles have in Jordan and supposedly in Iran received 'upgrades' in an attempt to modernise them and maintain some potency on the battlefield, it is unlikely the vehicle would be able to stand up against most Modern Western MBTs.

The Caliphate came into possession of a few hundred of these vehicles during the early stages of Revolution. In the wake of a limited U.S Air War over Iran in 2014, many members of the Iranian Armed forces had lost faith in the Government, and refused to quell a sudden, if unexpected surge in protests against the regime. In fact when the Caliphate movement (back then it was merely believed to be yet another Islamic Revolutionary movement) went militant, only hardcore Government supporters and Military personal who had connections to the regime posed any significant threat; the Army refused to engage the droves of armed revolutionaries, fearing that by turning its army on the militants, and the people, it would fracture the state and bring absolute ruin. However when the U.S stated it would not target units that belonged to the Revolution (it was blissfully unaware of what the Caliphate would become) the majority of Iran's military force entered on the side of the Caliphate militants; within a month, 'Armour of the Revolution' including Khalid MBTs, were storming down the highways of Tehran, faced with little opposition.

With the overthrow of the old regime, and the foundation of one of the first Caliphate Governments, the Iranian army set about reestablishing law and order; often with the help of militants loyal to the regime, at first Khalid's were deployed  amongst other armoured vehicles as a tool to threaten would-be rioters. Riots caused by food shortages and unemployment, the result of the U.S blockade in Hormuz, ensured the Iranian army stayed at home. Meanwhile the new Caliphate Government kept the U.S at a distance through lengthy, and often pointless negotiations, whilst planning its next moves, in order to link up with Revolutionaries across the Middle East.

When the Caliphate Wars eventually broke out, the Khalid was amongst the numerous, often outdated armour the Caliphate possessed in its arsenal. The tank served fairly well during the 'Offensives' against other armour possessed by other Middle Eastern states, though as expected it often suffered badly in confrontations with Western forces; in one extreme case, an entire platoon was wiped out by a trio of Apache attack helicopters, an event which emphasised the need for proper aerial defences to accompany armour during campaigns. In another event, during the skirmishes between Allied and Caliphate armour around Sulaymaniyah in Iraq, dozens of Khalid's were destroyed or damaged. That said, critics at the time often wondered whether the high casualty rate was due to the unescapable fact Iran and many other Caliphate middle Eastern forces had not really experienced much Tank on Tank warfare, the last time really being the Iran-Iraq war. It was also well known, that many Tank crews, similar to Caliphate infantry, had been quickly thrown into service; many experienced Tank crewmen had already been killed during the fighting across Iraq and Syria.

Either way, the Khalid continued to be a presence in Caliphate Armoured divisions; it was clearly well liked, since the Caliphate attempted to produce its own variant with some success, producing over a hundred MBTs and many spare parts for repairs before the factory was destroyed by an Israeli airstrike in 2018. The Caliphate also managed to capture many Khalid's not destroyed during the advance on Jordan, either by obtaining them after battles etc, or through Jordanian units that had switched sides. In 2020 the Caliphate Government again began creating more advanced copies of the Khalid, though by 2025, construction stopped when the resources to continue their production became too limited.

The last Khalid was decommissioned in 2050, by this time those that had served during the Caliphate wars and World War 3 that had survived were rusting wrecks, in 2035 the remainder had been given over to the Reserve forces, and in 2045 were used as training vehicles. One Khalid would remain in Tehran square right up until 2102, when it was hit by a Sha'ist Plasma missile, who mistook it for a live tank.

Two events where the Khalid became 'famous' was during the Caliphate war; During the battle of Beqaa Valley, North Eastern Lebanon; A Brigade of Khalid MBTs supported by Caliphate Paratroopers with some limited Artillery cover defeated a larger force of Lebanese T-55s and M60s, one of the biggest Tank engagements of the war. In the Second event, A Platoon of Khalids accompanied by two Brigades of T-72s accompanied by Hind helicopters were the first to overrun an American defensive position outside Rutba in Saudi Arabia, despite the enormous casualties suffered during the assault, largely due to American Abrams and Infantry A-T weapons, but also attacks by U.S Navy jets, the Caliphate force destroyed three Abrams, and air support downed one apache helicopter; an apparently major victory.

The Khalid, is not to be confused with the Pakistani Khalid, which also served in large quantities with the Caliphate until exports stopped in 2021.

I'll be putting up a large piece on my blog soon, which will look at Caliphate vehicles overall! I've finished Uni, so its back to the Hobby!
