Title: Modern city
Post by: Harrymason on July 11, 2011, 02:13:16 AM
I have begun working on terrain for my zombie games. A small swedish town is the goal, with a few apartment buildings, garages, a gas sation, bus stop and so on. So far I have made the ground floor of two apartment buildings, and a first floor on one of them. Nothing is painted yet though.

This is a -70s concrete block of a building. Th outer walls will be covered in fine sand to get the right texture. I have built another floor of this, it is pretty much identical.

Details of the bathroom.

Another house I stared today.

If anyone has an idea for some other suitable buildings, please tell me.

looking good so far.

When you ask for other suitable buildings - do you mean types of buildings or ways to make them?

If type, then anything that can hold goodies for the survivors to loot or that can further the story behind your game.

What I did was to take a look at my local shopping area to see what buildings are around: petrol station, town hall, hospital, police station, supermarket, take away food places and so on.

what eureka miniatures did you buy? (I noticed the postage box in the photos)

Nice.

I like the fact that your appartment building will be modulable..

As for suggestions : there are several paper model companies that have cool and reasonable priced building models.
even if you're not interested in papermodels, they can be used as templates for scratchbuilt buildings :

For the moment, I'm building a garage (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=29440.msg355569#msg355569) (fallout NV) and a TV-station  (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=30951.msg368246#msg368246) (copy of a plasticville model).
If you're interested I can send you the templates.

@Sheerluck: If you have a good way to make buildings, please share! :D As for the eureka box, I think that is from a frind of mine. I don't remember what he ordered (lots of it though).

@zizi666: Thanksa for the links! While i won't be making a paper model town, they can certainly be used for inspiration. I am also planning on building a garage, and I would really appreciate tour templates.

You can get my templates here :

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12288625/Poseidon%20station.pdf (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12288625/Poseidon%20station.pdf)
(this is a colored version, with a minor error on the first page where a grey and a yellow block were cut short, so you'll notice 2 small white blocks on one wall that shouldn't be there)

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but sweet and Thank You Very Much. Not sure if I will use the Poseidon Station one, but the TV Station will come in handy, already printed the template out on cardstock and going to trace it on foamcore as soon as I pick a sheet or two up.

Edit12JUL2011: Picked up a cheap sheet of Foamcore from the local Dollar Store to do a quick mock up of the TV Station. Building went together fairly easily. Will get some better foamcore and build it again (and decorate/paint it) for use in my ATZ games, due to the size of the interior will probably use the THW Building Interior rules released in I, Zombie (Building Interior Rules are available for free on the THW website, just click on the link for the product description for the Building Interior Tokens).

The thing about WIP threads like this is I get all enthused and stop working on whatever I should be doing. (don't stop posting them though)

that garage is awesome - I might "borrow" the design to make a self-storage place  :D

Sweet !
love the oil stains, but no separating walls ?

Garages like those usually don't have separating walls, other than what the tenants would put up themselves.

Must be a regional thing. Here we call 'em garage boxes and they're all individual units. that way, we can store more than just cars in 'em.

Looking good. Here they have separating walls.

Hmmm perhaps Sweden has a slightly smaller criminal element and their garaging is about parking cars out of the weather rather than an opportunity to have something away.

Tempted to suggested an IKEA, but seriously perhaps a sauna? And a pickled herring shop. Not sure how serious that last one is.

Hehe, an IKEA would be great, except I dont like to make furniture. :P
I have been thinking about a grocery or hardware store of some kind, but I do not want to spend ages making shelves and such. Is there any place where you can buy finished interior for 28mm?

Pardulon is really good, but lack saome important things like sinks, fridges and beds. Some companies who makes arcitectural model pieces in different scales have those. I´ve used a lot of 1:50 stuff form here http://shop.schulcz.de/ (http://shop.schulcz.de/) in my zombie project. Quite pricey, but good.

indeed great stuff. There are 2 shops here in Gent that carry the Schulcz range. I've bought the toilets, sinks, bathtubs, round and rectangular tables as well as some chairs so far.

Added another floor, the top floor. I also painted the bottom floor, but I think it got a bit too bright.

Try giving it a dark wash perhaps?
