Title: Dayak Longhouse Finished (Photos Added 9-11)

Well I finally finished most of the build on my scratch built Dayak longhouse.  The base is is still in progress and of course I still need to paint everything.  This is the inspiration for my building.

The building is based on a core of foamboard and cardstock.  I wish now that I had not used cardstock as warping has been a continuing problem.  The cladding is a sawed up sushis matt, which required quite a bit of working with an xacto knife (My right thumb is still numb  lol).  Note that the roof is different from that of the example.  I based it on the little spirit house at the forefront of that photo, which I thought might be more traditional and certainly more interesting

Really nice but just a question, who are the Dayak? Is that a South Est Asia tribe?

The Dyaks or Dayaks live mostly on the big isle of Borneo.  Headhunters.  The 'Sea Dayaks' used to practice piracy from their long prahus in the South China Sea.

Eureka make seven different 28mm Dyaks, beautiful sculpts:

Scheltrum make a couple of dozen different 25mm Dyaks which work well with the Eureka because Dyaks are small physically.  Scroll down and hit the 'picture' buttons to see them:

Nice work but to give it a 'longhouse' feel I'd be tempted to lengthen the main structure, it looks just a little squat at pres.

One true story from the 19th century saw a schooner armed with some punt guns [1] mounted on the bulwarks of the schooner. They were doing some salvage and the punt guns kept away the war canoes of the Dayaks. The canoes just disintegrated when they were hit.

I think the source was a book on the gun maker Holland & Holland but i cannot be sure. It sounds like an interesting game to play out.

1. Big bore muzzle loading shotguns - 1 bore or so, that is a a pound of lead shot with each 'bang'.

Thanks for the kind words fellows.  I have been able to devote some time to painting with my granddaughter this weekend so my Dayak project has advanced.  Of course, I wouldn't want to disappoint Grim either  :D :D  So here are some pictures of the painted building.

Sorry about not using the cutting board oxiana  lol Actually that cutting board has some history as part of my gaming construction gear.  My wife was not too happy when I appropriated/stole it but memories and bruises fade.  Here is a top down view of the unfinished base with the footings for the pilings cut out.

I have been using these cork coasters for a while now.  They come with plastic or mdf backs.  You have to trim down the edges.  You can cut up the ones with plastic backing into smaller bases. Here is the building set into the base but unglued.  I would really appreciate suggestions for finishing the base.

@ carlos I agree with your comment but I don't want it to take up too much of my game board.
@Klingsor a friend of the family used to have a puntgun in his gun collection.  The thing was literally a bloody canon!

Dayaks fought each other in intertribal conflicts and also pestered the shiplanes around Borneo.
For more background info google Raja Brooke - the White Raja of Sarawak.

Also it struck me while watching King Kong (Peter Jackson vers) last night on telly, that the natives of Skull Island could be represented by Dayak figures.....now if only Scheltrum would make a giant ape...

The stone mortar was molded of spackle and the pounder was carved out of a dowel.  The notched log ladders were carved out of chopsticks.

Sweet! A real stonker. I have wanted to wargame in a Dayak setting ever since I read the Nutmeg of Consolation.

Brilliant Lon, I love this scratch built stuff, the mortar and pestle is an excellent touch   :-*

Now slap some paint on the Dayaks, they have adventurers to eat and time's a'wasting  8)

Since this will be used in my 190? (nod to Ignatief) Pulp campaign I wanted to show some intrepid explorers, risking life and errr... heads, on location.  Just to clarify too, Hammers these beautiful minis are Bugsda masterworks.  I'm more of a terrain geek than a figure painter, though I have really improved thanks to LAF and some pointers from Orctrader.
