Title: C31 giant hill troll
Post by: Andrew May on August 16, 2011, 11:27:26 AM: I picked up this old figure from a second hand stall at Salute this year. He was plastered in enamels with no clue as to if he was any good underneath. Well a bath in nitromors revealed that no, he's not the nicest mini in the world but I thought that I would still give him a decent lick of paint as I'd already taken the trouble of prepping him!

Is that un-thinned brush on varnish though? If so, I recognize it cause I've been there. Careful there! ;)

Oh, was wrong in my guess. The fig is reflecting light out of the crevices--the knuckles, folds and face in particular, and it looks like the varnish went on thick. I had a fig look just like when I used some old brush on dullcoat that had become a bit too concentrated and I failed to thin it. After that, no amount (or at least not the four I tried) coats of spray dullcoat could full remedy the situation. You can see a something that might look a bit similar but which has a completely different cause on some of my d&d figs. There I use a thicker "matte" varnish as a first coat and top it off with dullcoat, and occasionally in the knuckles and folds you see some glimmers. Of course it's most obvious in the pics because of the lights staring right at the fig from inches away. If it was a show piece I would go in there with and fix it up but for gaming figs I sometimes just let it be... or I mean to return with another coat and let it be for the time being. :)
